Coast Guard monitors vessel transit after fire

January 30, 2018

On MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Coast Guard is monitoring the transit of the vessel George King from mile marker 390 on the lower Mississippi River near Vicksburg, Mississippi, Tuesday.

The George King and its 30 dry cargo barges departed mile marker 390 Friday in tow by the uninspected towing vessel John Paul Eckstein to Wickliffe, Kentucky, for dry dock repairs.

There were no reports of pollution.

Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River watchstanders received a notification at 8:50 p.m. Wednesday regarding the George King reporting an engine room fire with nine crewmembers aboard. The crewmembers abandoned the George King to the dry cargo barges it was pushing with no reported injuries. The C. Michael Reeves was able to push the George King and its barges onto the left descending bank of the Mississippi River.

The George King has an estimated 65,000 gallons of diesel on board.

Involved in the response are:
- Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Vicksburg
- Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries
- Budwine & Associates, Inc.
- United States Environmental Services (USES)

The Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.

Mississippi River Model To Be Tool For Restoration Projects.......

On Monday, the $18 million Louisiana State University Center for River Studies opened, and officials are saying that they now have a unique and powerful tool that can help Louisiana repair it's eroding coastline.

The facility features a 3D model of southeast Louisiana complete with a section of the Lower Mississippi River.  Researchers can send water and granules simulating sediment down the model to simulate coastal loss and restoration efforts.

For each hour the model is in operation, it represents one year of real time.  Researchers can open and close diversion channels in a variety of combinations to help determine what projects to prioritize........

Creve Coeur Lake
Carp In The Crosshairs At The Lake.........

All prior efforts to remove Asian carp from Creve Coeur Lake have failed, so this time around, officials have decided to take a different approach.

Kevin Meneau, a St. Charles-based fisheries management biologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation said that the carp have been in the lake since before 2009, when they hitched a ride into the lake via the flooding Missouri River.

Crews began the removal process on Monday.  They used nets to divide the lake into cells, then boats using more nets, localized electricity and sound herd the carp into another part of the lake, where they are removed........

Missouri River Near Spanish Lake, Missouri
River's Edge Trail At Columbia Bottom Conservation Area Reopened.......

During last spring's flooding, the Missouri River breached the levee near the Columbia Bottoms Conservation Area in Spanish Lake, completely covering the area with debris, litter and sand.  The River's Edge trail had been closed since that time.

Now, after a considerable amount of work, the Missouri Department of Conservation has reopened the River's Edge Trail.  Work on the trail was completed last week.

MDC Wildlife Biologist Jessi Tapp says that the debris and silt was so bad that chainsaws and a bulldozer had to be used to clean it up.  Tapp added that while crews were cleaning the debris up, MDC crews took the opportunity to improve and widen the trail........

News Release From BoatUS

Engage on State Boating Issues with New BoatUS Advocacy Tool

Great for grassroots boating efforts

ALEXANDRIA, Va., January 29, 2018 – With the adage that “all politics is local,” Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) offers a new online Advocacy Tool for recreational boaters. The tool serves as a one-stop shop for federal and state recreational boating issues and gives recreational boaters the option to track relevant bills by state, find contact information for elected officials, speak to policymakers to express their views, and advocate for boating issues in their community.
As the boater’s voice in Washington, D.C., BoatUS closely follows federal legislation and regulations that matter to boaters and boating. Using the Federal Action Alerts tool, boaters can find out if action is needed on a particular bill or rule that would impact boating.
A State Action Alerts tool tracks bills relevant to recreational boating by state as well as their status and sponsor, providing a simple and effective way to be kept informed of upcoming legislation and alerts that matter.
A key to affecting change is knowing your elected representatives and learning how to contact them. Using the Find your Elected Officials search box, boaters will get a complete list of contact information for federal, state and local elected officials.
“At the federal level, when we speak to Congress, BoatUS represents more than a half-million dues-paying members,” said BoatUS Government Affairs Manager David Kennedy. “Our new Advocacy Tool magnifies that strength and brings it to the state level, giving boaters the chance to have their voices heard when boating issues are being debated.”
“With significant issues, such as the mandate for more ethanol in gasoline or funding for dredging and infrastructure improvements to protect our waterways, boaters can use the BoatUS Advocacy Tool to remain engaged,” added Kennedy.
BoatUS is the nation’s only recreational boat owners group with a dedicated government affairs team speaking up for boaters. For more go to Advocacy.BoatUS.com

U.S. Warships
USS Missouri Has A New Home Port........

On Friday, the USS Missouri, a Virginia-class fast-attack submarine, officially took up residence at her new home port in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.  Fittingly, the Missouri was fitted with a giant lei.

As part of the ceremony behind the arrival of the Missouri, the sub's crewmembers stood on her deck and saluted as she passed the Missouri Battleship Memorial in Pearl Harbor.

This submarine is the fifth Navy vessel to be named in honor of Missouri.  The last USS Missouri was the legendary battleship that served in World War II, the Korean War and the Persian Gulf War.  It was aboard this battleship that U.S. and Allied officers accepted the unconditional surrender of the Japanese to end World War II........

Blessing of the Fleet Help Request.....

For the past half a century, yeah, that's right, 50 years plus, I have been involved with various organizations on the rivers. Growing up with boats and then being personally and professionally involved with all aspects from working drownings, boat accidents, fires, rescues, safety with events like the Bud Light Gran Prix, St. Louis Drag Boats, the VP Fair, Shootout on the Mississippi, Con Trios Yacht Club, Blessing of the Fleet and others. The one event on the river that I've always enjoyed was the Blessing of the Fleet. I've retired as President and now look forward to assisting the new President, Rick Flier, as he continues this 60 year tradition. I'd like to ask our fellow boaters to help Rick in this endeavor and keep this wonderful tradition going. If you would like to help Rick private message us on the Blessing of the Fleet facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/BlessingoftheFleetSTL/ and I will put you in contact with him.

Thanks,

Riverfront Project Timeline Coming Together........

Lately, not much has been said about the renovation of the riverfront at Hannibal, Missouri.  On Friday, Andy Dorian, the director of the Parks and Recreation Department said that at any time a notice of permitting for the project may be issued.

Following the issue of the permitting notice, there will be a 30 day comment period.  Suggestions received during this time will be incorporated into the plans by project engineer Klingner & Associates.  The revised plans will then return to city hall.

During the recent Park Board meeting, Dorian said that Klingner intends to have revised plans to the Hannibal City Council by the second meeting in February.  Once the plans are approved by the City Council, they will go out for bid........

Champ Clark Bridge Closing Several Times This Week........

Starting Monday, January 29 and running through Friday, February 2, the Champ Clark Bridge carrying U.S. 54 over the Mississippi River at Louisiana, Missouri will be closed each day, between 9 am to 4 pm, weather permitting.

Reportedly, as crews have been working to construct piers for the new Champ Clark Bridge, there have been several "close calls" as a result of debris falling from the existing span.

Brandi Baldwin, P.E., the Resident Engineer for the Missouri Department of Transportation says that the existing span is so narrow, vehicle side mirrors and other debris can become a safety hazard for crewmembers below aboard work barges........

Students Seek To Preserve History Of The Champ Clark Bridge.........

Once the $60 million replacement for the aging Champ Clark Bridge over the Mississippi River at Louisiana, Missouri is completed, the old span will be torn down.  Area students are working to preserve the history of the original span.

The general contractor of the new bridge, Massman Construction and the Missouri Department of Transportation have invited local high schools to compete for the chance to design an interpretive panel that will highlight the original bridge.

This interpretive panel will be placed in Louisiana's Riverview Park, at a location that will overlook the new bridge.  The panel will not only tell the tale of the old span, which was built in 1928, it will also feature structural elements salvaged from the old bridge........

Eagle Season Is Well Underway.......

Early January is when the eagle population starts to swell around the Riverbend, and according to the local travel industry, bald eagle sightings have been plentiful over the past week.

The effect that the bald eagles have on the Riverbend region can be quantified by the sheer number of tourism opportunities, many of which are well underway by mid-January.

According to Brett Stawar, President of the Alton Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau, there are eagle tours and hot spots all over the Riverbend region throughout January........

Investments In River Infrastructure Should Be Made.........

More than a decade ago, Congress approved making upgrades to the infrastructure along the Mississippi River, and now, these upgrades could to fruition under a proposed $1 trillion infrastructure program that will be discussed in D.C. this week.

Under this proposal, a variety of infrastructure projects could be completed, including upgrades to 5 locks and dams along the Mississippi River, two locks along the Illinois River, as well as flood control measures.

A delegation from the Quincy region will be in Washington D.C. in order to advise legislators on the economic benefits of replacing decaying infrastructure........

New Homes Begin To Take Shape For Pinhook Residents........

On Friday, dozens of people were celebrating the new beginning for nine former homeowners from Pinhook, Missouri, who are nearing the end of their seven year move into permanent housing.

The tiny village of Pinhook was located within an emergency floodway for the Mississippi River near New Madrid.  In 2011, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers blew the Birds Point Levee, causing a torrent of floodwaters to destroy the village.

Even though all of the Pinhook residents had flood insurance the flood was man-made, meaning their policies were null and void.  The residents of Pinhook were left without homes for several years through no fault of their own........

The Missouri Department of Conservation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Geological Survey and St. Louis County Parks and Recreation have teamed up with the intention to remove 90 percent of the Asian carp population.

The project, which will begin on Monday, will involve using boats to drive and herd fish into increasingly smaller portions of the lake, containing the fish and then sorting out the carp while leaving the native species behind........

Mississippi River Near Memphis, Tennessee
Couple Discovered Box Of Cremains On Mud Island.........

Back in October, Joe DiJanni and his wife, Dianna were in Memphis, Tennessee for a wedding.  The couple decided to visit Mud Island, and while walking around the island, they discovered a simple, unadorned box.

When they opened the box they found what appeared to be a plastic bag full of mud, and a circular metal tag.  DiJanni said that they quickly realized that they were holding the remains of something.

It is not uncommon for odd things to appear along the banks of the Mississippi River.  It turns out that the box had come from over 1,000 miles away, from the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetary........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently proposed a $2 million sandbar project for the Missouri River in North Dakota, which would benefit threatened and endangered birds.

Thanks,

Conservationists To Remove Carp From The Lake..........

Several conservation groups are partnering up to work on removing Asian carp from Creve Coeur Lake.  The invasive carp find their way into into the lake when the Missouri River floods are killing off the native fish population.

Congressional Candidate Toured Locks And Dam No.26........

On Tuesday, Brendan Kelly of Swansea, a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives for Illinois' 12th Congressional District visited the Melvin Price Locks and Dam No.26 in order to learn about the facility's operations.

Kelly says that the nation's economic plan must focus on infrastructure needs.  He notes that Illinois has a C minus in terms of infrastructure.  Kelly states that Illinois' infrastructure needs are considerable and he needs to see what they are.

So far, five barges have been successfully cleared from above the Emsworth Dam near Pittsburgh.  This includes two barges that were blocking salvage worker's access to a barge that was wedged against Gate 8.

Crews are still performing salvage operations near Moundsville, West Virginia.  Salvage workers have removed a barge from the channel at the 104.7 Mile Marker.  The Coast Guard has cancelled both safety zones on the Ohio River, but urge caution as salvage operations continue........

Study Offers New Methods To Lower Nutrient Runoff ..........

Each summer, the Gulf of Mexico is inundated with nitrogen and phosphorous sourced from farm field runoff and wastewater treatment plants within the Mississippi River Basin.  These nutrients create the so called dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency assembled a task force to address the nutrient runoff issue, and is requiring 12 states to develop strategies for reducing agricultural runoff.

Researchers from the University of Illinois say that strategies developed by Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota show promise.  Their study looked at science-based assessments of a variety of conservation practices, such as cover crops, bioreactors, conservation tillage and nitrogen application rates........

Historic War Ships
LST-510, Now Serving As A Ferry, Has Been Repowered.........

On June 6, 1944, the USS LST-510 participated in the landings on the beaches of Normandy.  She delivered 200 GIs, as well as 70 tanks and jeeps to Omaha Beach.  Afterwards, she was anchored offshore and served as a makeshift hospital ship for the Allied wounded.  For three months after the invasion, the LST-510 ferried wounded back to England, and returned with supplies for the front.

The LST-510 is thought to be the last remaining D-Day vessel still in active service.  She has been renamed the M/V Cape Henlopen and is now serving duty ferrying passengers and autos across the Block Island Sound, between New London, Connecticut and Orient, New York.

Recently....

The Cape Hanlopen's owner, Cross Sound Ferry has had the vessel repowered with a pair of 2,130 Horsepower CAT engines, and state-of-the-art Twin Disc transmissions and control systems........

Lake Of The Ozarks
Responders Save White Tailed Deer From The Ice...........

On Thursday afternoon, responders rescued a white tailed deer that was stuck on the ice in the center of a cove on the Lake of the Ozarks.

The Gravois Fire Protection District was alerted to the situation by a concerned property owner that had spotted the deer trapped on the ice.  GFPD Fire Chief Ed Hancock said that the small doe had walked onto the ice, and was unable to find enough traction to get back to shore.

Firefighters saw that the ice was too thin to support their body weight, so they used a rope to lasso the deer around the neck, and pulled her to safety.  Once on shore, responders carried the doe to where she could walk, released the rope, and watched the deer disappear into the woods........

Mild Earthquake Rattled New Madrid Monday Morning.........

At around 9:30 am Monday morning, a magnitude 2.7 earthquake shook southeast Missouri.  According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicenter of the quake was west-southwest of New Madrid, an area known for it's seismic activity.

The quake occurred only a day away from the 206th anniversary of the second of three severe earthquakes that occurred over the winter of 1811 - 1812.  The quakes occurred mere weeks apart, on December 16, January 23m and February 7.  These temblors dammed rivers and created lakes.  Hundreds of aftershocks continued for several years.

The earthquakes that occur within the New Madrid Seismic Zone happen in a large network of faults called the Reelfoot Rift.  This rift formed approximately 500 million years ago, when the region was stretched in a northwest-southeast direction.  Now, the region is undergoing an east-west shortening, reactivating the ancient faults of the Reelfoot Rift, causing earthquakes........

Officials Call For Improvements For Navigation, Flood Control..........

Later this month, a delegation from the Tri-State Region is bound for Washington D.C. with the mission of gaining legislative support for numerous flood control and navigation projects along the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers.

One of the delegation leaders is Quincy resident Mike Klingner, chairman of the Upper Mississippi, Illinois and Missouri Rivers Association.  This group has been calling for flood control and navigation improvements for several years.

Klingner says that UMIMRA officials are hoping that President Trump's proposal for spending $1 trillion on infrastructure projects will mean funding will be available for lock upgrades on five Mississippi River locks and two locks on the Illinois River........

Seven Years After Floods, Residents Rebuilding.........

Some seven years after flooding destroyed the tiny town of Pinhook, Missouri, nine households are breaking ground on permanent homes.  One will be north of Sikeston, another home will be built in Charleston.  The other seven households found adjacent lots to build on, creating their own little community of Pinhook in Sikeston.

Back in 2011, the Ohio River rose to record levels, causing massive flooding across the Heartland.  In order to ease the water pressure on the levees, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers activated the Birds Point-New Madrid floodway, sending a torrent of floodwaters through Mississippi County, destroying the Pinhook community.

On Monday, crews from Mennonite Disaster Services broke ground on the new Pinhook community in Sikeston.  The crews are volunteering their time marking and digging the foundations for the new homes........

Husband Dumped Wife's Body In The River During Graceland Trip.....

Phillip and Roberta "Bobby" Snider were on a trip to Memphis, when Bobby went missing.  Phillip had initially told police that she had died in Memphis, however, no one has been able to locate her body.

Phillip had told officials that he and Bobby had left their Ohio home in early January to visit Graceland.  He said the trip would likely be their last trip, as his wife was suffering from terminal cancer.  Phillip had told police that she had died in Kentucky, and he continued on to Memphis, and had flagged down an ambulance to take his wife.

After officials in Memphis were unable to locate Bobby's body, Philip admitted that he had wrapped his wife's body in plastic and dumped her off of the Interstate 40 Bridge into the Tennessee River in Benton County, Tennessee.  Bobby's body has yet to be found........
