Planning Finishing Up For I-270 Bridge, Construction Years Away........

On Wednesday, the Illinois Department of Transportation hosted an open house to discuss the proposed plan for replacing the Interstate 270 Old Chain of Rocks Bridge spanning the Mississippi River.

Cindy Stafford, a location studies engineers with IDOT says that they are wrapping up the engineering study and the meeting was for revealing what alternatives had been looked at for the replacement bridge's alignment.

The proposed location for the new span is just south of the existing bridge.  Part of the plan is to keep the old bridge operational during construction.  Engineers also had to work around such obstacles as a landfill on the Illinois side, the Dunn Road intersection on the Missouri side as well as access to the Missouri Welcome Center........

Creve Coeur Lake
Workers Intend To Remove Asian Carp From The Lake........

Personnel and boats from a variety of governmental agencies will be working together to remove the invasive Asian carp from Creve Coeur Lake.  This two week project may begin as soon as Sunday.

The Asian carp made their way into the lake some time before 2009, when the Missouri River spilled over into the lake.  Fishermen say that the white crappie fishing has declined following the invasion.

This project is intended to remove 90 percent of the carp from the lake.  Portions of the lake may be inaccessible as crews herd the carp with long nets and boats........

Update:  Explosion Was 2nd Major Incident For Towboat........

Friday morning, responders were called out to a dry dock along the Tennessee River near Calvert City for reports of an explosion aboard the towboat William E. Strait, which killed three people and injured several others.

The vessel, owned Smithland Towing, was in a dry dock owned by First Marine when the explosion occurred.  Troopers with the Kentucky State Police say that there is no indication of foul play at this time.

Reportedly, this was not the first accident involving the vessel; it was involved in another incident in 2015.  The William E. Strait struck another vessel along the Mississippi River just south of the I-55 Bridge at Memphis and sank in about 20 feet of water.  There were no injuries in that incident........

Three projects that dock owners should consider are checking the electric to the dock, make repairs to the seawall and have the dock and lift structures examined........

The Trout Harvest Will Begin On February 1........

The Missouri Department of Conservation has announced that beginning on February 1st, trout may be harvested from Rotary Lake in Jackson, Glessing Lake in Farmington and Legion Lake in Perryville.

According to MDC fisheries management biologist Mike Reed, the recent weather extremes has made fishing hit-or-miss over the winter.  He notes that if the lakes are not frozen, the trout harvest season opener should be excellent.

Reed said that the MDC had stocked trout in November at the beginning of the catch-and-release season.  He adds that these trout offer a significant amount of fishing opportunities during the fall and winter months, when warm water fishing is at a lull........

Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois
Eagles Offer Excitement Despite Chilly Weather........

Brett Stawar, president and chief executive officer of the Alton Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau said that last weekend, there were up to 50 eagles spotted between Alton and Grafton last weekend.

Stawar added that the eagle numbers are up this year, thanks to the cold air being driven down from the north.  The eagles are pushed toward the rivers when the ground freezes in search of a meal.

While the eagles are joining pelicans, trumpeter swans and other migrating birds, they also draw in visitors from miles around, all of whom are willing to brave the cold to catch a glimpse of the American bald eagle in it's natural habitat........

Man Talked Off Eads Bridge By Retired Marine........

On Tuesday, retired Marine James Sperry decided to take the Eads Bridge home, instead of his usual route across the Mississippi River.  That decision may have helped in saving a life.

As Sperry was crossing the Eads Bridge, he spotted a man on the outside of the rail, and another man trying to help him.  Sperry pulled over, hooked the man's arm, and told him that he had been in the man's shoes before.

Sperry had been shot in the chest and head during the Battle of Fallujah, and after recovering, suffered from PTSD.  He used those experiences to help talk the man back over the railing........

Coast Guard Preparing To Raise Sunken Tug........

The U.S. Coast Guard recently announced that they were coordinating salvage operations for a tugboat that sank in the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee.

According to a news release from December 12, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is surveying the area that the 66 foot Ricky Robinson sank, in order to determine the status of the navigation channel prior to commencing with salvage operations.

The two men that were aboard the Ricky Robinson when it went down are still missing.  Vessels from the Memphis Police Department, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, the Coast Guard and Tennessee's wildlife agency had searched some 324 nautical miles of the Mississippi River before calling off the search........

Ohio River Near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Moundsville, West Virginia
Unified Command Still Responding To Barge Breakaways........

On Monday, the unified command, made up of the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and river shipping industry partners are still responding to two separate barge breakaways along the Ohio River, near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Moundsville, West Virginia.

Initially, it was reported that 45 barges had broken free at Ohio River Mile Marker 94 near Moundsville.  An updated report reveals that only 35 barges had broken free, and 34 of the 35 barges have been located.

25 out of 27 breakaway barges from the Jack's Run Fleeting area at Ohio River Mile Marker 4 near Pittsburgh are now accounted for.

Officials have reviewed security footage at the Emsworth Lock and Dam, and it turns out that seven barges went over the dam.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has started breaking up ice in the area to facilitate salvage operations.

The U.S. Coast Guard is still monitoring the situation at both locations. The barges broke free on account of ice and high water. There are two safety zones set up, with full waterway closures between Ohio River Mile Markers 83 and 110, and between Mile Markers 2 through 20 due to the risk of channel obstructions........

Beware Of Frozen Bodies Of Water........

The Missouri State Highway Patrol would like to remind the public to be wary of frozen waters within the region.  They note that just because a body of water is frozen over, it may not be safe to walk on.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the human body will lose heat twenty five times faster when it is submerged in water, so they recommend staying off the ice.  The Highway Patrol also says that if one is attempting to rescue another person or animal, call emergency responders.

Shawn Smith with the Hannibal Fire Department reports that it takes less than 45 minutes for severe hypothermia to set in after falling into the water.  Smith adds that a small incident can have a greater effect than people realize, as you are not only risking your life, you're the lives of the responders........

No-Wake Legislation Moving Through The House....  NMMA Set To Oppose....

Lake of the Ozarks-region State Representative David Wood recently proposed no-wake legislation that could make it easier for property owners to banish the majority of the wakes in the coves.

The legislation is facing tough opposition from the National Marine Manufacturers Association and the Lake of the Ozarks Marine Trades (Dealers) Association, who are ready to oppose House Bill 1591, should it gain support.

The bill aims to fine personal watercraft riders up to $25 for not wearing a life jacket, as well as double the cove size eligible for no-wake designation, lower the percentage of property owner signatures needed to gain a no-wake designation, make the no-wake designation apply only to boats over 26 feet, and boats under 26 feet designed to create large wakes, and provide a $25 fine for no-wake area violators........

Mississippi River Near Davenport, Iowa
Bald Eagles Making Their Annual Trip Along The Mississippi River........

The Mississippi River along the eastern Iowa border is seeing the annual return of the bald eagles, which is drawing in residents and tourists alike.

The eagles hunt over open water and as the rivers ice up, the eagles follow them down to open waters in the Davenport region.  This annual migration also brings numerous bird watchers to the region.

Burt Gearhart, a wildlife photographer, says that Lock and Dam No.14 at LeClaire, Iowa is probably the best place in the lower 48 states to view and photograph bald eagles.  He notes Alaska has more eagles, but that is a long plane ride........

Casino Shuttle Boat Catches Fire....  Passengers Swim To Shore....

On Sunday, a shuttle boat running passengers to a casino boat near New Port Richey, Florida caught fire, causing injuries to 15 people.  Officials say that the fire likely began in the engine room and quickly spread.

Shawn Whited, the Pasco County fire division chief said that there were 50 people aboard the vessel when the fire broke out.  It was approximately a half mile from shore.

The U.S. Coast Guard reports that all of the passengers were accounted for and able to make it to shore.  Officials say that the boat's captain saved lives because he headed back toward shore when he noticed the flames........

Legislators Call For 2019 Funds For Mississippi River Waterways........

Several locks and dams along the Mississippi River are deteriorating, which is a threat to the critical transportation system for the nation's grain and oilseed exports.

A bipartisan group of 10 senators is calling on the Trump administration to request additional funding for needed infrastructure repairs.

The senators recently penned a letter to Mick Mulvaney, director of the White House's Office of Management and Budget, noting that many of the locks and dams in the Mississippi River system were constructed in the 1930s, and are in desperate need of repair........

Missouri River Management
Corps Getting Ready For Runoff Season........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is preparing the Missouri River Mainstem Reservoir System for the spring runoff season.  The Gavins Point Dam is currently releasing

21,500 cubic feet of water per second.

John Remus, chief of the Corps' Missouri River Basin Water Management Division says that higher than normal runoff last year is allowing them to release higher amounts of water during the winter months.

The greater winter releases provides additional hydropower generation during one of the peak power demand periods.  The increased releases also benefits municipal and industrial water intakes below the Gavins Point Dam, which can be affected by low water levels after ice forms........

Pirate News From North Carolina
What Did Blackbeard Read Aboard The Queen Anne's Revenge?

Unexpected artifacts discovered in the wreckage of Blackbeard's sunken vessel, the Queen Anne's Revenge, have led researchers to question whether the pirate captain and his crew were literate, and what types of books were kept aboard.

While preserving artifacts from the ancient shipwreck, archaeological conservators from the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources' Queen Anne's Revenge Conservation Lab found 16 small paper fragments lodged in a ball of wet sludge in a cannon.  Some of the fragments had legible printed text.

While only a few words were readable, and the biggest scrap was about the size of a quarter, researchers were able to identify the fragments as part of a 1712 book, A Voyage to the South Sea, and Round the World, Perform'd in the Years 1708, 1709, 1710, and 1711, a voyage narrative by Captain Edward Cooke chronicling his adventures on the high seas........

Classic Wooden Boats Are At Home On The Lake........

Terry Hart, owner of Hart Diving and Salvage usually has several projects underway, either breathing new life into a boat that has sunk, or finding a wooden boat in need of restoration.

Over 20 years ago, Hart undertook his first restoration project, a 1961 Chris Craft named Chug, which he still owns.  He made some repairs to the wood, and other than some refinishing work, the boat is still in it's original condition.

Hart notes that people think owning a wooden boat is a nightmare, however, he runs his all the time.  He says that finding a wooden boat sitting out in the woods can be pricy to resurrect, but if they are maintained and used, the expenses are similar to any other boat........

Water Safety
MSHP Discusses Cold Weather Safety........

Colonel Sandra K. Karsten, the superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol is calling on the public to be aware and use caution around the state's many bodies of water during the chilly winter months.

Cold shock happens when one's body is suddenly submerged in cold water.  When the torso of the body is immersed, the blood vessels will constrict to preserve core body heat.  As this happens, the use of a person's extremities is quickly limited.

Cold shock may suddenly increase heart rate and blood pressure, sometimes resulting in cardiac arrest.  These conditions can also cause an involuntary gasp reflex to occur.  When a person hits the water, cold shock could cause an overboard boater to suddenly breathe in, but water, not air, resulting in drowning........

The Mississippi River Is Becoming Saltier........

A recent study claims that waterways across the nation, including the Mississippi River, are getting saltier, which would have repercussions for drinking water and the ecosystem.

The salt is mainly sourced from two places, road salt, which is used to melt snow and ice along roadways, and agricultural fertilizers that often contain potassium, which is a type of salt.

Researchers say that 37 percent of the drainage area within the United States is getting saltier.  According to Alex Kolker, a coastal scientist with the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium and Tulane, this is a new finding within the scientific community.........

Significant Support For Removing Two Mississippi River Dams........

In 2015, officials ordered the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock to close, and ever since, the people in the Twin Cities are considering the future of the Mississippi River in the Gorge, the portion between the falls and the confluence with the Minnesota River.

At one time, the Gorge was a long section of whitewater, but during the last century, it has been dammed and pooled for navigation and hydropower purposes.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers owns the two dams within the Gorge.

Since there is very little barge traffic, and high maintenance costs, the Corps is evaluating whether or not to remove the dams, and restore the Gorge section of the Mississippi River........

Yamaha Unveils New V MAX SHO Outboard........

Yamaha Marine Group recently pulled the wraps off of their latest addition to the V MAX SHO outboard engine family, The V MAX SHO 90.  This version is the smallest member of the SHO outboard engine family.

Ben Speciale, the president of Yamaha Marine Group says that the new SHO 90 is an ideal solution for boaters looking to replace an older two stroke outboard with the clean, quiet efficiency of a four stroke.

For convenience and control, the SHO90 is compatible with Yamaha propellers that feature their Shift Dampener System, as well as the company's variavle trolling RPM switch for slow trolling........

Boat Sales
Boat Sales Strong Leading Up To Boat Show Season........

The boat show season has arrived, and it is a crucial sales period.  This week, the National Marine Manufacturers Association recently announced that the sales of new powerboats are expected to have increased by 6 percent during 2017.

While consumer confidence continues to increase and boat manufacturers are working to introduce new products and experiences in order to attract younger boaters, it is anticipated that 2018 will see another 5-6 percent increase in boat sales.

Thom Dammrich, president of the NMMA says that 2017 was the sixth consecutive year of growth in the sales of new boats and recreational boating expenditures, and they expect the trend to continue through 2018 and beyond........
