Hi Bill,

Arrived home to find what looked like a stopped river. The natural ice sculptures are beautiful. I will try tonight to get some better shots of them. Ready to be sprung from my bed by the sound of ice cracking and docks settling. For those whom have not experienced it: Gun Shots and Thunder. Twings and Twangs. Cracks and Pops

Seeks Recycled Christmas Trees To Benefit Fish and Anglers.....

What better Christmas present could there be than a new home? Of course, some anglers might say an improved chance to catch some fish would be at the top of their list.

Christmas trees can check both boxes off the list by creating a place for fish to live and giving an advantage to anglers.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is accepting used natural Christmas trees to create fish habitat in Lake 33 on the August A. Busch Conservation Area in St. Charles, and in north St. Louis County at Spanish Lake Park........

NMMA Will Participate in Sheet Aluminum Pricing Hearing

The U.S. The US Department of Commerce has announced an antidumping and countervailing duty case on Common Alloy Aluminum Sheet from China.

This covers the import of sheet aluminum from China for the 3XXX-, 4XXX- and 5XXX-series alloy. The 5XXX-series aluminum is of real concern because it is often used in marine applications due to its corrosion-resistance.

It is projected that the import duties on the aluminum sheet will increase at least 56.54 percent and could be much higher when the anti-subsidy duties are included.

NMMA will participate in a hearing on the matter on Dec. 21 where witnesses from the domestic industry can testify about the harm they are experiencing

Upcoming Event... January 13-14, 2018

Missouri Department of Conservation

MDC and partners bring Eagle Days to the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge Jan. 13-14

Visitors can discover our national bird in the wild and up close at this free eagle viewing festival.

ST. LOUIS, MO – Few words can describe the thrill of seeing America’s national symbol soaring through the air in the wild, or close enough to touch.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and its partners offer the chance to discover a close connection with the bald eagle. The Eagle Days at the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge Festival takes place from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, and Sunday, Jan. 14.

Visitors can view eagles through spotting scopes staffed by trained volunteers at any time from the vantage point of the historic Old Chain of Rocks Bridge. The bridge is part of the Mississippi Greenway, also known as the Riverfront Trail. On both days, the World Bird Sanctuary will be presenting an educational program featuring a live bald eagle, repeated every 20 minutes from 10 a.m.-2:40 p.m. Programming includes a hands-on exhibit of local birds presented by St. Louis Audubon, a full-size replica of an eagle’s nest, and warming tent activities, including children’s art.

Guests will also enjoy Lewis and Clark living history demonstrations at both sides of the bridge. The Missouri Bridge entrance will feature re-enactors from the Discovery Expedition of St. Charles both days. Visitors can see how Lewis and Clark and their crew lived, cooked, and traveled more than 200 years ago. Demonstrations will also include a flag raising at 10 a.m. and lowering at 3 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. The Illinois side will feature re-enactors from the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site in Hartford, Ill., on Saturday.

RiverBill,

It's been awhile since I posted something to you. Marinemax has sent me on another wonderful trip. They have me and another Capt. taking a 44 Aquila from St. Petersburg, Fla to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. The trip is roughly 1500nm.

When we locked thru at the Franklin lock on the Okeechobee Waterway I came across a riverbill sticker and I saw one at every lock after that.

After we fuel up in Stuart @ Sunrise Marina, we pull into Nassau for fuel.

News Release From BoatUS

Keep Online Boating Safety Course Free by Donating to BoatUS Foundation

Take advantage of 2017 tax benefits

The BoatUS Foundation’s boating safety course is the only free online educational tool that helps boaters obtain their state’s boating safety education certification easily and affordably. To help keep the course free, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit is asking for tax-deductible donations to help educate the next generation of recreational boaters.
“We offer free online state boating courses to help reduce a barrier to boating and greatly increase your chance for a safe day on the water,” said Assistant Director of Boating Safety Ted Sensenbrenner. “More than 1.2 million boaters have taken our courses, but we don’t want to rest on our laurels. To educate the next generation, we need to look ahead and seek out more investments in technology. We hope boaters will help us.”
To make a donation to the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water, go to BoatUS.org/DonateNow. A gift to the Foundation may entitle a donor to a charitable contribution deduction against his or her income taxes. See your tax adviser for details.
The Foundation offers a range of free and low-cost courses for boaters of all experience levels, from new to advanced, at BoatUS.org/courses.

Mississippi River Delta
Could River Diversions Cause Land Losses Instead Of Gains?

A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers research Hydraulic engineer says that Louisiana's plans for diverting the Mississippi River into the wetlands in Plaquemines Parish to rebuild the coast could in fact accelerate wetlands loss and drown brackish plants.

During a presentation at last week's American Geophysical Union conference in New Orleans, Gary Brown said that modeled predictions are saying that land is constructed near the diversion, but land is lost further out.

River diversions are considered to be a way to mimic natural land building processes similar to how the Mississippi River Delta was formed.  The thought is that the levees that protected industry and communities from flooding have starved the delta of sand and sediment carried by the river........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois
Cameras Going Up On Clark Bridge Soon.......

Alton officials say that the license plate recognition cameras will be installed on the Clark Bridge prior to the end of 2017.  These cameras will cover all traffic coming into and going out of Alton.

According to Godfrey Mayor Mike McCormick, the cameras are being used for safety, not for generating revenue.  He added that the cameras would not be converted to go after speeders.

McCormick says that Godfrey has very little crime, and over the summer, two carjackings occurred.  These crimes were traced back to suspects that had crossed the Clark Bridge from Missouri.

The camera system will cost roughly $100,000, with the costs being split between Alton, Godfrey and Madison County........

Confluence Point State Park Has Reopened.........

The National Great Rivers Museum recently shared a Facebook post from The Audubon Center at Riverlands which announced that the Missouri State Parks has reopened Confluence Point State Park........

Located where the Missouri and Mississippi River merge, the Edward "Ted" and Pat Jones Confluence Point State Park offers a unique perspective of America.  The Confluence Point is the spot that Western expansion truly began, as well as the location that Lewis and Clark began their journey up the Missouri River.  The wetlands located at the park is a part of the Mississippi River flyway, meaning that the location is a great place to watch waterfowl, bald eagles and raptors........

Progress On The St. Louis Riverfront Redevelopment........
.

The You Paid For It crew recently took a look at plans for redeveloping the North Riverfront area.  Plans proposed two years ago called for entertainment venues, offices and residential development in the region now occupied by vacant lots and decrepit buildings.

Laclede's Landing and the Lumiere Casino complex are among the bright spots in the area, but the majority of the 180 acre site is sorely in need of redevelopment.

Officials in St. Louis are saying that the public should see considerable improvements in the next few years as plans get underway.  They have yet to say how much the redevelopment will cost or how long it will take to complete........

Meramec River History
3 High School Seniors Murdered At Meramec River Clubhouse........

On December 17, 1966, a group of Roosevelt High School seniors were celebrating Christmas break the Grenada Club, a clubhouse on the Meramec River near Eureka, when trouble arose with an older group of Grenada Club patrons.

The argument turned into a scuffle, which ended up with 21 year old Richard Otis shooting and killing three high school seniors, 18 year old Gary Ratliff, and two 17 year olds, Michael Tinsley and Joseph Michaels.

It turned out the Michaels was the nephew of long time local mobster, "Horseshoe" Jimmy Michaels Sr..  While Otis was out on bail, he met his end in a hail of bullets in a Wellston tavern called Carter's Corner........

Hurricane Affected Third Quarter Boat Sales........

During September, Hurricane Irma limited new boat sales in Florida.  This was a major factor in the industry's third quarter, as sales were flat compared to the same period in 2016.

During the third quarter of 2017, 75,038 boats were sold in 48 states which represent about 98 percent of the U.S. boat market.  This is 10 vessels fewer than last year.

On the 12 month rolling period through September, sales were up 3.8 percent.  During this time, 264,623 boats were sold, an increase of 9,662 boats during the previous 12 month period........

Lake Of The Ozarks
Representative Proposes 2018 Wake, Lifejacket Legislation........

Excessive boat wakes were a point of contention between some lakefront property owners and boaters during the 2017 boating season.  As a result, State Representative David Wood is proposing another bill intended to mitigate damage to docks.

Wood had filed a bill in 2015 that would have created an infraction for plowing, or intentionally causing large wakes by running between idle speed and on-plane speed within 300 feet of a dock pier, buoyed restricted area or an anchored occupied boat.  The current no-wake distance is 100 feet.

This legislation, and another in violations for certain life-jacket infractions, did not go very far in the legislature.  Wood's new bill includes the lifejacket violation changes, and the proposed wake measures........

Paddler Halts Journey Around All 5 Great Lakes........

On March 9, 2017, Traci Lynn Martin, a nurse from Kansas City, Missouri, began an effort to paddle around all 5 Great Lakes.  She recently stopped her journey due to wintery weather.

Since March, Martin has paddled 3,582 miles, circumnavigating lakes Superior, Huron and Michigan.  On Saturday, Martin posted a Facebook video, stating that she has been covered in ice as the temperatures are usually below freezing.

Martin noted that it is not safe to continue, and the cold will only get worse.  She offered her thanks to several people for their support during what she calls an adventure of a lifetime.  She intends to try again in March 2019........

State Trooper Fired Over Drowning Death........

The Missouri State Highway Patrol announced that they have fired a trooper connected to the drowning death of a handcuffed man that fell from the trooper's boat on the Lake of the Ozarks.

20 year old Brandon Ellingson died in May of 2014 while in the custody of Trooper Anthony Piercy.  Ellingson was arrested for suspicion of boating under the influence.

Piercy had handcuffed Ellingson and placed a life jacket on him.  Unfortunately, the vest was the wrong type and was not properly secured.  The vessel hit a wave, tossing Ellingson into the lake.  The life vest came off and the handcuffed Ellingson was unable to keep himself afloat........

Red Tape, Regulations Stopped River Cruise Line.........

Thanks to governmental regulations and red tape, one of the world's largest river cruise companies from cruising the Mississippi River.  Viking cruises operates vessels in Europe, Asia and Africa, and they wanted to run cruises along the Mississippi River.

According to Jeff LaGarce, the City Manager of Hannibal, Missouri says that for two years, Viking tried to meet the federal regulations to operate on the Mississippi River.  However, Viking recently decided that the regulations were not economically viable.

LaGarce added that Viking's statement said that the economics involved did not meet Viking's goals.  LaGarce said that he doesn't know if the cancellation is due to the Jones Act, or governmental bureaucracy........

Coast Guard's Ice Breaking Operations Begins........

The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Sault Sainte Marie has announced that they began Operation Taconite due to the expanded ice growth in the commercial ports along the lower St. Mary's River and the western portions of Lake Superior.

Before the ice can build up and affect commercial navigation, the Coast Guard assigned icebreakers to each region.  The Coast Guard Cutter Alder was assigned to break ice in Western Lake Superior.

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Biscayne Bay has been tasked with ice breaking duties along the St. Mary's river.  As more areas of the Great Lakes freeze up, additional Coast Guard ice breakers will be assigned to the operation........

Lake Of The Ozarks

While Is The Lake Lower Than Normal?.

The level of the Lake of the Ozarks is low, and the operators of the Bagnell Dam are advising property owners that the water level is only going to get lower as winter arrives.

Amren Missouri operates the dam with the guidance of a guide-curve throughout the year.  Full pool for the Lake is around 659 - 660 feet of elevation.  In the fall, the guide-curve lowers the level about a foot, and following a brief rise in December, Amren will lower the water level to 654 feet by mid february.

Currently, the Lake is lower than normal, and there are several reasons why.  The fall drought is one reason for the low water levels.  Truman Lake is low as well, and as a result, the Truman Dam is releasing very little water.

The Bagnell Dam is currently undergoing a major rehabilitation project, so Amren has kept the water level a bit lower than usual while crews work in the spillway area.

Colder weather plays a factor as well, as people use more electricity.  This causes Amren to occasionally run a large volume of water through the dam to help with spikes in electrical demand........

News Release From BoatUS

To the Person Who Ran Their Boat Too Close to Me

Top 10 Most Read BoatUS Magazine Articles in 2017

When running a boat, how close is too close? For anyone behind the helm on a congested waterway or dropping anchor in a popular anchorage, “too close” could mean a boat length or a football field away. BoatUS Magazine writer Carol Newman Cronin looks at the issue in the story “How Close is Too Close?,” which ranked tenth of the Top 10 BoatUS Magazine most-read stories of 2017. Just in time for winter reading, here’s Cronin’s story and nine other top-ranked features that can be found at BoatUS.com/top-ten-articles-2017.
9. “Favorite boating apps.” From celestial identification to tidal data, lots of handy information is available at your fingertips.
8. “Avoid that sinking feeling.” Eight ways to ensure that used boat you’re looking at isn’t a storm-damaged lemon.
7. “Leave the dock using spring lines.” With one easy-to-learn technique, leaving a tricky dock can be simple, whether you have bow and stern thrusters or not.
6. “Fuel-efficient towing.” When it comes to buying a tow vehicle, the gap has narrowed between tow capacity and fuel economy. Many new models offer both, but there are some trade-offs.
5. “Leaving a slip in the wind.” Learn five tactics to get away from the dock when the gusts are against you.
4. “Restore gelcoat shine: A to Z.” Gelcoat is often touted as a maintenance-free material, but that’s not quite the whole story. Here’s how to restore the shine.
3. “What to do if your outboard won’t start.” Step-by-step troubleshooting will help you pinpoint problems.
2. “Six easy hacks for tidier projects.” Some of the best ideas are cheap, but will save you loads in the long run.
1. “Why aren’t millennials buying boats?” Millennials participate in boating at similar rates to their parents, yet they’re far less likely to actually own a boat. Here’s why from a millennial’s perspective.

BoatUS membership costs just $24 and includes more than 25 benefits and services, including a BoatUS Magazine subscription, round-the-clock on-water or roadside dispatch with BoatUS paying the first $50 in towing services, exclusive fuel, transient slip and repair discounts; and rewards on boating gear at West Marine stores. To join for just $24 annually, go to BoatUS.com/membership.

Gateway Arch Featured In The New York Times........

On Tuesday, the Gateway Arch got some national press, as it was the subject of an article in the New York Times.  The article covered the history of Eero Saarinen's creation along the St Louis riverfront.

The story also looks at the renovations currently being done by the Gateway Arch Park Foundation, noting that the main features of the park's restoration are the realignment of it's entrances, updating the visitor center and improving access for pedestrians.

William O. DeWitt III, president of the St. Louis Cardinals and Foundation board member was quoted as saying that prior to the recent renovations, the Arch was a sub-par visitor experience........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Amren Is Preparing The Lake For Winter........

Amren Missouri has begun their annual winter draw down of the Lake of the Ozarks, and they are advising property owners along the Lake and Osage River to prepare their docks for lower lake levels and chilly temperatures.

Jeff Green, Amren Missouri's shoreline management supervisor says that winter conditions such as freezing and ice pose risks for dock owners on either side of the Bagnell Dam.

Amren has assembled a few tips for both Lake and Osage River dock owners to get ready for the winter season:

○  Remove docks on the Osage River prior to freezing occurs.

○  Make sure hinges, pins and other connections tying docks to seawalls or piers have adequate mobility to accommodate water level changes.

○  Lengthen cables to let them fall as the lake or river levels fall.

○  Use a dock deicer to help prevent ice damage to docks.

○  Ask neighbors to tabs on the dock or retain a local contractor to care for the property while it is unoccupied........

Deepening The Lower Mississippi River Channel Gaining Support........

Support is increasing for the 50 foot Ship Channel, which will support a more economical and efficient way to transport grain exports.  The Big River Coalition is at the center of the effort to deepen the Mississippi River.

Back in 2012, Congress directed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Institute of Water Resources to determine the ability of U.S. ports to support post-panamax vessels.

A short time later, the BRC met with IWR officials, who published an addendum to the report, which focused on the benefits of deepening the Mississippi River Ship Channel to 50 feet.........

Boat Propulsion Manufacturer
Demand For Yamaha Engines Causing Shipping Delays........

Due to "unprecedented demand", the Yamaha Motor Corp. is calling on it's opposite numbers in Japan to focus on redirecting products to the United States, so they can fulfill their orders.

Yamaha reports that a "perfect storm" of issues has caused the company to be unable to meet the demand for 2.8 liter, 4.2 liter V6 5.3 liter V8 outboards and some rigging items, in the time frame Yamaha had planned.

According to a letter that Yamaha Marine Group president Ben Speciale sent to dealers, the main issue is that the increase in demand has occurred while the company's manufacturing operations are in transition.  The transition is intended to accommodate new products, as well as increased long-term demand........

Madison County Holds Flooding Tabletop Exercise........

Tuesday morning, approximately 20 people representing emergency responders, public service and private agencies met up for a tabletop exercise simulating flooding in Southwestern Madison County.

Tabletop exercises are typically one of the first steps toward a full-scale emergency preparedness drill.  During the exercise, attendees discuss what their agency's response would be to a flood.

Todd Fulton, the Madison County EMA Director said that at some point, around 100 people, not counting residents or students, will be portraying "victims", participating in the actual drill........

“Helly Hansen invented the first flexible waterproof jacket for people who liked being in the elements, working offshore” said BoatUS Vice President of Towing Adam Wheeler. “Our captains like being on the water all day assisting boaters, but they need to be protected. There is no better choice for us than Helly Hansen’s apparel and foul-weather gear. We know that a warm, dry crew is a safe crew.”

“Our brand’s heritage stems from the commitment to protect professionals out on the water and to help them stay and feel alive,” said Helly Hansen’s US Marketing Manager, Brady Barry. “We’re very excited to outfit and work with such a well-respected company that aims to not only protect its captains from some of the harshest conditions, but helps thousands of recreational boaters get home safely each year.”

Helly Hansen began in 1877 when sea captain Helly Juell Hansen found a better way to stay protected from the harsh Norwegian elements. Soon thereafter, Captain Hansen and his wife Margrethe launched a business producing waterproof oilskin jackets, trousers, sou’westers and tarpaulins made from coarse linen soaked in linseed oil, marrying comfort and protection for the first time. Today, the clothing is designed, developed and trusted by sailing professionals around the world, as well as on mountains and worksites. For more go to hellyhansen.com.

Asian Carp Update

3 Attorneys General Call For Walling Off The Great Lakes........

Three state's attorneys general are saying that a $275 million federal plan for stopping the Asian carp migration into the Great Lakes is too costly, and overlooks the most effective solution.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' plan calls for the installation of electric barriers, and water cannons at the Brandon Road Lock and Dam near Joliet, Illinois.

The attorneys general Lori Swanson of Minnesota, Bill Schuette of Michigan and Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania say a better plan would be to replace the lock gates with a concrete wall that will separate the Great Lakes from the Mississippi River watershed at a cost of only $5.9 million........

Mississippi River Near Keokuk, Iowa

Why Is There A Coast Guard Station In Keokuk?

Since Keokuk, Iowa is located along the Mississippi River and not on one of the coasts, the question arises, "Why is there a Coast Guard station on the Mississippi River?".

Master Chief Petty Officer Jason Olsen says that the reason is the Mississippi River shipping industry.  He adds that the Keokuk Coast Guard station is responsible for the navigation buoys in the river channel and lighted shoreline markers for the 320 miles of the river between Alton, Illinois and Clinton, Iowa.

The Coast Guard's mission is called "aids to navigation", and involves the maintenance of 1065 buoys in the river, each of which weighs between 160 and 465 pounds, and is anchored by a 45 foot chain hooked to a 1,500 pound concrete block........

The Great Lakes

Opioids, Other Drugs Found In Our Waterways........

Environmental scientists say that chemicals from pain killers and other drugs are finding their way into rivers and lakes, forming what some scientists claim could be a deadly cocktail for fish and wildlife.

Emma Rosi, an aquatic ecosystem ecologist with the Cary Institute in New York says that what we use every day ends up going down the drain and into the waterways.

Rosi's researchers follow the long trail of chemical compounds from opioids, antidepressants and illegal drugs like cocaine, which enter the environment via human urine and feces.  Unused medications sometimes end up flushed down the toilet or drains........

Click here to read this news article from news.wbfo.org.

Opioids:

are a class of drugs that include the illegal drug heroin, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, and pain relievers available legally by prescription, such as oxycodone (OxyContin®), hydrocodone (Vicodin®), codeine, morphine, and many others.

The USS Kidd Will Be Starring In A WW II Drama........

Early next year, a World War II Naval drama will begin filming in Baton Rouge Louisiana.  The film, Greyhound, was scripted by and will star actor Tom Hanks.

On Monday, pre-production work began, and in March, filming will begin aboard the USS Kidd on the Baton Rouge riverfront, as well as locations around town.  The plan is for around 161 days of filming in Louisiana.

Hanks will portray the troubled commander of a U.S. Navy destroyer, the USS Greyhound, shortly after the United States' entry into World War II.  The story takes place as the Greyhound escorts a military convoy across the Atlantic Ocean in 1942.  During this time, the German submarines were prowling the shipping lanes between America and Europe........

Family Searches For Missing Boaters After Coast Guard Quits........

A family is relying on faith, and continuing their search for boaters that went missing despite the U.S. Coast Guard calling off their search over 24 hours before.

The family and friends of Anquavius Jamison and Keith Pigram assembled their own search party to search for the father and son that haven't been seen since Thursday, when the tug boat they were working on sank in the Mississippi River.

The group searched from about 1 pm until sundown.  They looked in several areas near the river and were constantly calling their names.  Molly Harris, Pigram's sister says that she won't believe the men are dead until she sees bodies or caskets........

Record Grain Harvest Strains Inland Waterway System........

This fall, there was a sizable traffic jam along the Ohio River, where dam issues at Lock and Dam No.52 shut down the river, leaving a line of about 50 tows waiting to traverse the lock.

These types of delays are occurring more often on the nation's waterways, which are crucial to trade in the United States, which is the largest grain exporter in the world.

According to barge operators, farmers, grains merchants and shippers, the surging shipments of corn and soybeans are overwhelming the inland waterways system, which is causing more frequent and severe backups .

The majority of the nation's 239 locks have outlived their 50 year design lives.  The American Society of Civil Engineers reports that nearly half of the vessels on the inland waterways system encounter delays........

Viking Cruises Backs Out Of Cruising The Mississippi........

Several Mississippi River towns were expecting Viking Cruise Lines vessels to stop at their riverfront docks.  Viking, however, has cancelled plans for entering the U.S. cruising market.

Viking recently informed Hannibal and Fort Madison of their change in plans for building vessels in the United States for use along the Mississippi River.

Officials had earmarked funds for accommodating the Viking vessels along their riverfront, but those funds will be redirected into another riverfront project.  Andy Dorian, Hannibal Parks and Recreation Director says that nothing will change as far as Hannibal is concerned........

Officials Debate How To Combat Erosion, Lead Contamination........

The Big River in St. Francois County, Missouri isn't exactly a popular destination for anglers or floaters, as it winds it's way through Missouri's lead belt, which at one time, supported the largest concentration of lead mines in the world.

Experts say that the industry left parts of the region contaminated with heavy metals, leading to warnings against eating the fish and causing the populations of freshwater mussels and crayfish to dwindle over time.

Lead and other heavy metals have settled into the sediments along 90 miles of the Big River.  Due to recent floods in the area, these sediments contaminated with lead, cadmium and zinc are slowly moving downstream toward the Meramec River.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are trying to figure out the best way to allocate at least $24 million from an environmental damage settlement from the American Smelting and Refining Co..

Officials are considering projects that would prevent soil erosion, such as measures to anchor the soil in place, like adding trees and vegetation.  Other projects are being looked at, including river bank stabilization with materials that could be used as fish habitat during periods of high water........

The Arrrr Barr is closed for the season.

The Gift Shop Winery will stay open 7 days a week until December 3, but if the weather remains good we will try to stay open on Friday Saturday and Sunday with the Oyster Bar.

The marina really never closes. We always have guys onsite working the docks end dredging. The gas docks remains open all winter also.
