Boat Maintenance

Winterizing Tips To Avoid Critters, Ice and Mildew........

With the arrival of chilly temperatures, many boaters have winterized their boats, and if not, there is no time like the present.  With that being said, there are some winterizing tips that you may not have been aware of.

Scott "Sky" Smith, author of Ultimate Boat Maintenance Projects says that he switched to an outboard motor to reduce winterizing headaches, as they can essentially drip dry.  Inboards require flushing with antifreeze to avoid freeze damage to the engine.

Smith notes that when storing a boat, it should always be covered in order to keep out bugs, birds and small critters.  Items that can absorb moisture and smells should be removed from the vessel and stored in a dry place.  Cushions and pads should be placed on end to minimize the surface area in contact with another surface........

Viking Cruises Cancelling Mississippi River Cruises........

Europe-based Viking River Cruises recently announced that they would not be visiting Hannibal, or any other destinations along the Mississippi River for the foreseeable future.

Andy Dorian, director of Hannibal's Parks and Recreation Department, said that last week, Viking advised the city of their intention to cancel plans for building ships in the United States.

There was no specific reason given for Viking's change in plans, but their decision will not disrupt Hannibal's plans for renovating their riverfront........

Louisiana Business Group Concerned About Proposed Carp Plans........

A Louisiana business lobbying organization has expressed concern over the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' proposals for blocking Asian carp form the Great Lakes.

The Louisiana Association of Business and Industry recently sent a letter the the Corps calling for the consideration of alternatives to plans that may affect maritime traffic between the Mississippi River Basin and the Great Lakes.

While the letter acknowledges the possibility that Asian carp could harm the Greta Lakes fishing industry, it also emphasized how important maritime traffic is to the Louisiana economy.  The LABI is calling for thorough studies on the cost-effectiveness of structural controls........

Controversy Surrounds Source Of The Mississippi River........

The Mississippi River is the third largest river system in the world, and the second largest drainage system in North America.  The true source of the Mississippi River, however, is not exactly clear.

The generally accepted source of the Mississippi River is Lake Itasca, which is a glacial lake that covers nearly 2 square miles.  It is located in Itasca State Park in north central Minnesota.

The root of all of the controversies about the river's source can be traced back to the tributaries that flow into Lake Itasca year round.  The controversy has also continued due to the evolved definition of the source of a river........

Day 32

SUN SET OVER AMERICA ON WEDNESDAY

Leaving the USA

HELLO BIMINI                      GOOD MORNING

After our 50 mile trip from Fort Lauderdale across the Atlantic we arrived at North Bimini Island late Wednesday evening, dropped anchor and spent the night.   All is good

The sun came up over the island as we were getting up and getting ready to depart.

Early Thursday, we pulled anchor and motored into the harbor, tied up and took care of some Bahama business.

IMMIGRATION

Captain Greg got cleared thru Customs and then all of the crew headed to the immigration office!

RIVERBILLS STICKER SIGHTING

We had to leave a RiverBills Sticker even though Captain Greg said there was already one there a few docks over.

SHIP WRECK OF THE SS SAPONA

As we left the harbor at North Bimini Island we spotted the ship wreck of the SS Sapona off in the distance.  Captain Greg sent me the following:

From Wikipedia:

SS Sapona was a concrete-hulled cargo steamer that ran aground near Bimini during a hurricane in 1926. The wreck of the ship is easily visible above the water, and is both a navigational landmark for boaters and a popular dive site.

Sapona was built by the Liberty Ship Building Company of Wilmington, North Carolina as part of a fleet of concrete ships authorized by Woodrow Wilson during World War I, because steel was in short supply. Like many others in the fleet, the ship was completed after the end of the war, and Sapona was sold for scrap to Carl Fisher, one of the developers of Miami Beach. It was initially used as a casino and later for oil storage. The 1936 book Miami Millions claims that Mr. Fisher took it out to sea and sank it, but it was in fact purchased in 1924 by Bruce Bethel.
Bethel moved the ship to Bimini, using it as a warehouse for alcohol during the era of Prohibition. Bethel also intended to use the ship as a floating nightclub, although this plan never came to fruition. In 1926, the ship ran aground in a hurricane and broke apart

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Sapona

BLUE, BLUE, BLUE

We cruised all day in crystal clear flat seas that were about 15 - 20 feet deep and so, so blue that it is hard for me to describe. Surrounded by water, water, water all the way around. A person could hardly tell where the ocean ended and where the sky began. Absolutely amazing !

Only seen one cruiser all afternoon.

We did stop for a swim and some picture taking in late afternoon. Launched the skiff, motored around the boat, snapped a couple shots and then jumped in the ocean.

About 4:30 a few low flying clouds moved in delivered a few rain drops. Nothing to be concerned about.

ALMOST SUNSET ON ATLANTIC OCEAN

SUN SET ON A THURSDAY NIGHT

There was a huge change in the colors at the sun got closer to the water and finally sank into the ocean. Not a spectacular sunset, but it will have to do until tomorrow night.

Click pic to enlarge

ANCHORED AT CHUB CAY

We ran all day and anchored after dark at Chub Cay, Bahamas for the night.

Chub Cay is at the southernmost tip of the Berry Islands in the Bahamas. It is located 35 miles west of Nassau and 125 miles from South Florida.

US Army Corps of Engineers

Corps closes locks, ending Upper Mississippi River navigation season

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, locked its last tow of the season today, Dec. 7, to end the navigation season on the Upper Mississippi River.

The Motor Vessel Bernard G locked through Lock and Dam 10, in Guttenberg, Iowa, early this morning. She was pushing 11 barges filled with corn and soybeans.

The Motor Vessel Pere Marquette was the last vessel to depart St. Paul. She departed Nov. 28, pushing five barges filled with grains and soybeans. She locked through Lock and Dam 10, Nov. 30.

The locks will officially close Dec. 10, but there are no additional tows within the St. Paul District. The closure completes another year of navigation on the Upper Mississippi River from St. Paul, Minnesota, to the district’s most southern facility, Lock and Dam 10.

The last tow to leave the St. Paul District’s boundaries during the 2016 season was the Motor Vessel J. Andrew Eckstein. She was locked through Lock and Dam 10, Dec. 8, 2016.

The Motor Vessel Stephen L. Colby was the first tow to reach St. Paul this season. She arrived with 12 barges March 9, marking the start to the 2017 navigation season.

The Corps closed Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam and Lock and Dam 1, both in Minneapolis, to navigation Nov. 19. Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam was permanently closed to all navigation in 2015.

The nearly 600 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, employees working at more than 40 sites in five upper-Midwest states serve the American public in the areas of environmental enhancement, navigation, flood damage reduction, water and wetlands regulation, recreation sites and disaster response. Through the St. Paul District Fiscal Year 2016 $78 million budget, nearly 1,250 non-Corps jobs were added to the regional economy as well as $120 million to the national economy. Meramec River Near Eureka, Missouri

A Look Back At The Flood Of 1982....  And The Demise Of Times Beach....

Back in 1925, the former St. Louis Times newspaper offered clubhouse sites along the Meramec River east of Eureka, as a "popular new summer resort".  Fast forward 50 years, and Times Beach was an outer suburb for people of modest means and prone to flooding.

In November of 1982, the residents of Times Beach found out that the oil used to spray the town's dirt roads had been tainted by dioxin, a deadly toxin.  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency took soil samples for analysis.

On December 2, 1982, heavy rainfall swelled the rivers surrounding the St. Louis area, some places receiving more than 10 inches of rainfall in 4 days.  While residents of Times Beach and other river towns were used to flooding, they weren't prepared for five more feet of water than expected.

As the Meramec River receded, the damage was revealed.  Portions of Arnold and Valley Park were never settled again, the towns survived.  Times Beach, however, did not survive.  Between the flood and confirmation of dioxin, the township ended up being dissolved.  The final residents were moved by the federal environmental Superfund in 1985........

IDOT Reveals Plans For The Florence Bridge........

Thursday evening, the Illinois Department of Transportation hosted an informational open house to advise residents about their plans for the future of the Florence Bridge over the Illinois River.

There are four proposed plans for a new bridge, which differ only in the distance of the new span from the old one.  Winchester judge and farmer, David Cherry says that any of the four plans is viable.

The Florence Bridge was built in 1929, and carries Illinois 100/106 over the Illinois River.  The span was inspected this year and determined to be functionally obsolete as well as structurally deficient........

Next week, there will be an open house event to notify the public of the results of the American Bottom Community Flood Survey and the American Bottom Watershed Plan.

On Wednesday, December 13th, the Council Chambers at Pontoon Beach Village Hall will be hosting the open house, where the public can voice their concerns and have their flood questions answered by Madison County officials and representatives of the HeartLands Conservancy.

Janet Buchanan, a project manager at HeartLands Conservancy says that the Flood Survey results were a bit of a surprise.  She reveals that flooding is sometimes occurring on higher ground, and a higher water table plays a factor........

Analyst:  Sea Ray Sale Difficult, But Necessary........

Recently, Brunswick Corp. announced that after three decades of ownership, they are selling the Sea Ray brand, inventory and facilities.  The news came as a shock to members of the marine industry and some analysts.

Brunswick CEO Mark Schwabero said that the company is expecting to take a loss on the sale.  He notes that the industry, especially the cruiser and runabout business, has not returned to pre-recession levels.

The sale is indicating that Brunswick is not only decreasing the most cyclical portion of the business, but also following consumer trends, which continues to favor outboard power versus sterndrive/inboard power........

News Release From BoatUS

8 Telltale Signs That the Used Boat You're Buying Could be a Storm-Damaged Lemon

“It’s not that you don’t want to buy a boat that’s been repaired, but you should have full knowledge of the repairs and know they were done correctly. It’s a transparency issue that will help you negotiate a fair price,” said BoatUS Consumer Affairs Director Charles Fort. The boating group offers eight tips to help you spot a boat that might have been badly damaged in a storm:
1.Trace the history. When a car is totaled, the title is branded as salvaged or rebuilt, and buyers know up front that there was major damage at some point in the car's history. But only a few states brand salvaged boats – Florida and Texas do not – and some states don't require titles for boats. Anyone wishing to obscure a boat's history need only cross state lines to avoid detection, which can be a tipoff. Look for recent gaps in the boat's ownership, which may mean that it was at an auction or in a repair yard for a long time.
2.Look for recent hull repairs. Especially on older boats, matching gelcoat is very difficult. Mismatched colors around a repaired area are often a giveaway and may signal nothing more than filler under the gelcoat, rather than a proper fiberglass repair.
3.Look for new repairs or sealant at the hull-to-deck joint. Boats that bang against a dock during a storm often suffer damage there.
4.Evidence of sinking. Check for consistent corrosion on interior hardware, such as rust on all hinges and drawer pulls. You might be able to spot an interior waterline inside a locker or an area hidden behind an interior structure.
5.Corrosion in the electrical system. Corrosion on electrical items, such as lamps, connectors and behind breaker panels might mean the boat sank recently. Does the boat have all new electronics? Why?
6.Look for evidence of major interior repairs. Fresh paint or gelcoat work on the inside of the hull and engine room is usually obvious. All new cushions and curtains may be a tipoff, too.
7.Look for fresh paint on the engine. It may be covering exterior rust as well as interior damage.
8.Ask the seller. In some states, a seller isn't required to disclose if a boat was badly damaged unless you ask. If the seller hems and haws, keep looking.

Visit BoatUS.com/marine-surveys to learn more about marine surveys and access a free online boat-buying guide from BoatUS.

Lake Of The Ozarks

Dock Manufacturer Purchases Ozark Precast........

Michael and Todd Hudson, owners of long time dock manufacturer and service company, DockWorks, recently purchased Ozark Precast, which manufactures stone and block designed for docks.

Todd Hudson said that making the stone, allows the company to to stand behind the product, control quality and successfully guarantee their work.

The brothers have some big plans for the companies, however, they are being mum with the details.  They are quite excited about the launch of a new custom product line, which is both practical and innovative........

Missouri River Management

The Missouri River Running Above Normal This Year........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports that the Missouri River will be running a lttle above normal this winter, thanks to higher than normal runoff above the Gavins Point Dam.

John Remus, the chief of the Corps Missouri River Water Management Division said that the actual runoff from late summer throughout the fall has been higher than normal.

Usually, the winter releases from the Gavins Point Dam are between 12,000 and 17,000 cubic feet of water per second.  The Water Management Division intends to keep the releases around 21,500 cubic feet per second, which won't tax levees downstream........

Asian Carp Update

Illinois:  No Rush On Carp Countermeasures........

Some U.S. Senators from a few of the Great Lakes states are upset that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is not in a rush to keep Asian carp from making it into the lakes.  The senators penned a letter to the Corps calling for an electric barrier to be installed along the Illinois River near Joliet prior to 2025.

Kevin Irons with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources says that there is no reason to rush.  Irons adds that the Corps, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the IDNR have spent a lot of time to make sure the carp threat doesn't increase, and to that end, there has been a decrease in the number of carp in the Upper Illinois River.

Irons said that over the past few years, Illinois has taken a million pounds of Asian carp out of the Illinois River.  He points out that the IDNR knows where the carp are, and where they aren't.  There are no carp in downtown Chicago, and there have been no carp found in Lake Michigan........

Hey, Bill,

Friday we took the Y2Katy out for fuel and one last cold ride before winterizing. Pete Tully himself gassed us up at Polestar. Then back to Lake Center to finish. We were cold and hungry when we got done, so off to Massa's for dinner. As you can see we ran into Paul Grubbs of Lake Center fame and his beautiful bride, Stephanie. Good food and good company on our last day of 2016 boating.

See you on the river, buddy!

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

Prep Work Underway For Riverfront Rehab........

Over the past few weeks, crews have been preparing for Hannibal's riverfront renovation project by removing two structures:  the old restrooms and the Nipper Park fountain.

While the restrooms were removed weeks ago, the demolition of the fountain began last week.  Crews were working to complete the fountain's removal by Monday ahead of chillier weather.

During November's park board meeting, Andy Dorian said that they had the time, and getting the structures out of the way will save a little money on demolition down the road........

News Release From BoatUS

You Asked for Less Ethanol With Your Gas; EPA Adds More

This summer, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) asked the public how much ethanol it wanted to be added to the nation’s gasoline supply, and recreational boaters as well as many other owners of gasoline engines and vehicles spoke up against increasing ethanol volumes under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). On Friday, EPA set the 2018 RFS at 19.29 billion gallons, a 0.05 percent increase over the 2017 standard. Signed into law in 2005, the RFS requires an increasing amount of biofuels, such as corn ethanol, to be blended into the gasoline supply.
“In August, EPA originally proposed a slight lowering of the overall ethanol mandate. However, bowing to pressure from the ethanol backers, the agency actually notched the mandate higher,” said BoatUS Government Affairs Manager David Kennedy. “We think the EPA’s decision unfairly supports the ethanol industry over protecting consumers, recreational boaters, and the environment. If ethanol is as good for America’s fuel supply as Big Ethanol would like you to believe, then why do we have a law that forces more ethanol each year into the market? The RFS no longer works for Americans.”
When it was written, RFS assumed that America’s use of gasoline would continue to grow. Since 2005, however, gasoline usage has not increased as forecasted, which today forces more ethanol into each gallon of gas. To keep up with the RFS mandate, in 2010 EPA granted a waiver to allow E15 (15 percent ethanol) into the marketplace. However, only fuels containing up to 10 percent ethanol (E10) are permitted for use in recreational boats. As higher blends enter the gas supply, the chance of misfueling increases.
“Ethanol has been demonstrated to cause harm to many gasoline engines at the present 10 percent ethanol level, especially legacy outboard motors, decreases fuel efficiency, increases fuel costs for consumers, and has questionable environmental benefits,” added Kennedy. “BoatUS will continue to fight on behalf of America’s recreational boaters to fix the RFS.”
Go to BoatUS.com/gov/rfs for more information on the Renewable Fuel Standard. BoatUS is a member of the Smarter Fuel Future coalition.

Three painters from the Star Sign Co. began painting their version of the Piasa Bird on a bluff that overlooks the Mississippi River above Alton. A few weeks, prior, crews from the Hellrung Construction Company worked to prepare the bluff for paint. They had to remove close to a half ton of rock from the surface of the bluff, and then the 2,500 square foot area received a base coat. The painting replaced a previous duplication of Piasa Bird that had been removed during the construction of the Great River Road........

It was repainted on a steel plate in 1984 and hung from the bluff like a sign.

The current version of the Piasa Bird was painted on bluff in 1999.

Federal Waterways

Outlook For Waterway Infrastructure Projects........

October 1 marked the first day of the federal government's fiscal year 2018.  Ideally, the federal budget is finalized with appropriations, but in reality, budget deliberations will likely run through December.

Among items in the budget is spending allocations for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Civil Works programs.  The President's proposal would spend $5 billion on Civil Works, while Congress' proposal would spend $6.16 billion.

The President would spend $1 billion of construction, compared to Congress' $1.7 billion.  The President set aside $1 billion for operations and maintenance, compared to the Senate's $3.4 billion and the House's $3.5 billion.  The remainder would cover smaller programs, such as Mississippi River and Tributary expenditures such as flood control programs........

A Few Tips To Verify A Properly Installed Generator........

Many boaters don't think twice about their generators, other than firing them up and flipping a switch.  Gensets appear to be as commonplace as the electricity in our homes.  Generators are fairly safe, however, how they are installed can pose a hazard to those aboard.  Boating Magazine spoke with the experts at Westerbeke, and assembled a checklist of items to look for in a solid and secure marine generator installation........

Red River Near Fargo, North Dakota

Flood Control Project On Hold At Judge's Order........

Concerns over flooding along the Red River in Fargo, and neighboring Moorhead, Minnesota has led to a possible solution, which involves shifting the cities' problems elsewhere.

The project would involve the construction of a large channel and a dam that would hold the overflow in rural locations upstream.  A group of farmers are fighting the project, as it threatens to swallow their property.

In September, a federal judge ruled the project didn't have the required permits from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.  The farmers had filed suit looking to junk the plan for other proposals that wouldn't uproot farmsteads........

Corps Needs To Act On Carp Shield........

U.S. Senators from Michigan and Ohio recently called on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to act promptly on plans for keeping Asian carp from reaching the Great Lakes.

In a letter to the Corps, Senators Rob Portman and Debbie Stabenow, the co-chairs of the Senate Great Lakes Task Force stressed that the Brandon Road Lock and Dam Study needs to be completed by January 2019 deadline.

The Corps intends to enact recommendations no earlier that 2025, by which time, the issue will likely be moot.  Implementation of the lakes' defensive plan needs to be implemented shortly after final plans are approved........

Algiers Bonfire Ushers In The Holiday Season........

On Saturday night, revelers witnessed a huge bonfire glowing amid a thick, cottony fog rising off of the Mississippi River as the Algiers Bonfire 2017 burned.

This year's bonfire consisted of a two story stack of shipping pallets, which supported a large wooden silhouette of Louisiana, with a raked Santa cap and a mural of a catfish swimming through the center of the state.

The bonfire quickly lost it's shape to the flames, and the crowd cheered as it crumbled in a pile of hot coals.  The annual Algiers Bonfire is intended to herald in the holiday season........

Corps Seeks Input On Crains Island Project........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District is calling on the public to provide input on a proposed project to rehabilitate Crains Island, located along the right descending bank of the Mississippi River between Mile Markers 103.5 and 105.5.

The project involves the restoration of aquatic and wetlands habitats on the 553 acre refuge.  It also includes excavation of side channels from the Mississippi River to the island, reforestation throughout the refuge and a sediment deflection berm.

The Corps noted in a feasibility report that human activity over the past two centuries in the region has changed the hydrology and biotic communities that were historically present in the project area........

River Photographer Knows Where To Pick His Shots........

Over the Labor Day Weekend, avid photographer John Miller was tracking the former Rhythm City Casino barge as it headed to it's new home in Keokuk, Iowa, with the intention of capturing it's arrival.

Miller, a Keokuk native, developed an appreciation for riverboats and river history during his teenage years, as he worked at the George M. Verity Riverboat Museum.  Later on, his father managed the site, and Miller was his right hand man.

Miller's mother was an artist, and encouraged him to engage his creative side.  Miller thought to himself that since he loves the river, he needed to be able to photograph it........

Bill,

Right before the big cold snap a few of the sailors had a race up to Grafton. Not quite America's Cup excitement but a good time had by all. If not for the voracious seamanship displayed by our captain, "Bloody Bruce" (alias "Hot Foot") and excellent crewing by "Magnificent Mary", we would not have won the heart pounding photo finish. We had to celebrate by putting up the spinnaker on the Aguila while Dynamite Debbie Dibella took the award winning picture.

Blue Skies,
Dr. Denny

U.S. Coast Guard

The Christmas Ship Arrived In Chicago........

On Friday and Saturday, the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw teamed up with Chicago's Christmas Ship Committee to reenact a tradition that dates back to the late 19th century.

The Mackinaw played the part of the Chicago Christmas Tree Ship and arrived at Chicago's Navy Pier on Friday, loaded with over 1,200 Christmas trees.  They were unloaded Saturday and distributed to groups identified by the committee for needy families.

The Rouse Simmons was the original Christmas Tree Ship, delivering Christmas trees and wreaths from Michigan to Chicago during the late 19th century, into the early 20th century.  On November 23, 1912, Captain Herman Schuenemann and the crew of 16 were lost in a storm between Two Rivers and Kewaunee, Wisconsin........

Only In Your State has compiled a list of 7 bizarre roadside attractions around the St. Louis region and there are a few on the list that are along the Mississippi River.

The Graffiti Wall is located along the St. Louis waterfront, south of the Gateway Arch.  The wall features close to two miles of painted floodwall.  every year, Paint Louis brings together over 250 artists to create new art for the wall.

The Piasa Bird is a recreation of a Native American monster that was engraved on the Bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River.  The current 48 by 22 foot version is located on the Mississippi River bluffs along the Great River Road about a mile north of the Alton Visitor Center........

Injunction Not Sought In NAWS Appeal........

As part of an appeal in their ongoing lawsuit, Missouri and Manitoba are not calling for the reinstatement of an injunction against the Northwest Area Water Supply project

The injunction was lifted by a federal judge back in August, however, the initial appeal documents filed on Monday never mentioned the injunction.

Missouri is taking exception to the project, questioning if the Environmental Impact Statement tool a "hard look" at the cumulative effects of drawing water from Lake Sakakawea, and the depletion of the Missouri River........

Asian Carp Update

Balance Called For In Illinois' Carp Response........

Illinois Lieutenant Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti recently stated that a proposal for preventing Asian carp from reaching the Great Lakes needs a careful examination.

Back in July, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers unveiled a new carp control system that would be installed at the Brandon Roads Lock and am along the Des Plaines River.  The system combines an electric barrier with water jets, complex noises and other features.

The consensus is that Asian carp reaching the Great Lakes would be catastrophic, but Sanguinetti says that they need to balance all interests concerned.  She adds that they need to look at the environment, industry and the taxpayer as well........

Boat Groundings At All Time High On Lake Pepin....  River Study Underway....

Over the summer, boat groundings on Lake Pepin were at an all-time high, with around 30 boats needing assistance.  Zach Paider, general manager of Bill's Bay Marina says that they had more tow calls in that area than any other place.

According to Rylee Main with the Lake Pepin Legacy Alliance stated that the issue is sediment that moves along the river, settling at the opening to the lake.

Main has teamed up with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Minnesota and Wisconsin Departments of Natural Resources to study the river prior to dredging.  Main adds that some islands will be constructed, others would be extended........

River History....

02 December 1967 in River History

The famous River Queen steamboat sank on the St. Louis Riverfront on this day in 1967. High water, ice and other problems made saving the sinking vessel impossible. The steamboat quickly bokeup and the city of St. Louis brought in a scoop shovel to demolished what remained her, leaving behind only the steel hull.

It was indeed a famous riverboat, as it was used in the movie.. "Gone With the Wind."

The River Queen started her life in 1923 as the Eagle Packet Company steamer named the Cape Girardeau and later it became the the Greene Line's tourist steamboat, the Gordon C. Greene. She was the last packet boat built by the Howard Shipyards at Jeffersonville, Indiana and ran the rivers until 1952 when she was converted to a hotel, restaurant, bar/museum and gift shop under the names of Sarah Lee, the Sternwheller and then the River Queen.

Angler Breaks Cousin's Record For Northern Hog Sucker........

The Missouri Department of Conservation announced that Poplar Bluff resident, Jeff Rowland has become the latest record -breaking fisherman in Missouri, when he gigged a northern hog sucker on the Current River.

The new "alternative method" record fish was caught on October 15, weighed in at 2 pounds, 8 ounces, and was 18.3 inches long.  This fish broke the previous record that was held by Rowland's cousin, who had gigged a 2 pound, 3 ounce northern hog sucker back in 2010.

Rowland said that he knew he had caught a big fish, but he was surprised that it outweighed the state record.  He adds that he is excited to be a record holder, and that the record has remained in the family........

Mississippi River Near Harpers Ferry, Iowa

Is There A Bull Shark Swimming Around Iowa?

A Cedar Rapids television station has received photos and video of what is thought to be a bull shark swimming in the Mississippi River near Harpers Ferry, Iowa

A bull shark is the only shark that can survive in freshwater.  The question is whether a bull shark would have made an over 1,000 mile journey up the Mississippi River.

Andy Allison, with the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium says that a bull shark can withstand the freshwater, but it is doubtful a bull shark would survive the chilly water temperatures.

Allison adds that the shape of the fin in the photos is curved, not like a bull shark's straight fin.  Some believe that the photo could show the fin of a large grass carp, others believe that the photo show a piece of driftwood floating down the river........

The Christmas Ship Will Deliver 1,200 Christmas Trees........

On Friday and Saturday, the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw crew and members of the Chicago Christmas Ship Committee will be reenacting a tradition that dates to the late 1800s.

The Mackinaw is again acting as the "Christmas Ship" and is loaded with over 1,200 Christmas trees.  The ship is scheduled to arrive at Chicago's Navy Pier at 8:30 am for a two day event.

Following a brief ceremony Saturday morning, Coast Guard members and local youth volunteers will offload the trees, which will then be distributed to more than 1,200 deserving families........

MoDOT:  New Highway 47 Bridge Unique, Authentic........

According to Judy Wagner, the Area Engineer for the Missouri Department of Transportation, the new Highway 47 Bridge over the Missouri River at Washington, Missouri will be "unique and authentic" in it's design.

On Monday, Wagner was speaking before the Washington Highway Transportation Committee and noted that there are many characteristics that set the bridge apart, such as Gothic piers and protrusions.

The $63 million project will include a 10 foot wide biking and pedestrian path on the west side of the bridge, featuring an overlook where bikers and pedestrians can stop to take in the sights........

River History....

This Week in 1982 River History

There was big news on the Rivers around St. Louis during the first week of December in 1982.

Over 10 inches of rain fell in the area, and the Mississippi River crested 9 feet above flood stage. The Meramec River had a record crest that wiped out portions of Arnold, Eureka, and Valley Park.  This flood, along with dioxin-tainted soil brought about the demise of Times Beach, Missouri.......

Mississippi River Starts Closing....  Empty Barges Heading Up The Ohio River....

Last week, 534 grain barges headed downbound through the locking sections of the Mississippi, Ohio and Arkansas Rivers with a total tonnage of 1.2 million tons.  Around 84% of the barges were from the Upper Mississippi and Illinois rivers.

The barge traffic is fairly typical for this time of year, as barges are moving out of the uppermost reaches of the soon-to-be-closed Upper Mississippi River on account of winter ice.

For the better part of November, traffic along the Ohio River was hampered by high water and repair work at the Ohio River Lock and Dam No.52, causing delays for downbound grain barges, and returning upbound empty barges........

Quad Marine recently announced plans for the Quad 44, which is a catamaran powered with electric motors, and rigged for solar charging.

The vessel is designed with the living quarters located above the sponsons, similar to an outrigger canoe.  This design offers more living space, better visibility from the helm, and allows for concealed dinghy storage.

The Quad 44 is marketed toward recreational say or extended cruising sailors, charter operators and liveaboard boaters.  A public offering was recently launched to raise funds for production of the Quad 44........

Lake Of The Ozarks

New Owners Have Big Plans For Iconic Marina........

Back in October, Jeff and Kim Powell purchased the historic Millstone Marina at the 7 Mile Marker of the Lake of the Ozarks, and they have some big plans for the iconic property.

Jeff says that the Millstone Marina is the oldest and largest marina operating on the Lake.  He adds that they intend to make the marina a destination location, a place where people can camp, live aboard, and have all they need in one location.

Ever since the Howells purchased the marina, they have been busy with renovations.  They are adding a new break wall to protect vessels in the harbor and will be adding another 70 docks to the 166 existing docks........
