Great Loop Voyage Powered By Torqeedo........

Captain Jim Greer recently wrapped up the 7,200 mile Great Loop in a boat powered by three Torqueedo  outboard motors and solar panels.

Greer said that using the solar panels, batteries and Torqueedo electric motors the boat, RA, was able to complete the travel days without using fossil fuels or plugging into marina shorepower hookups.  He added that they did not have a backup generator or power cords aboard the vessel.

Steve Trkla, president and general manager of Torqueedo, Inc. said that Captain Greer's pioneering solar powered voyage offers proof of the efficiency and reliability of electric boats........

Annual Mississippi River Headwaters, Red Lake Drawdown In Progress........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District has announced that they are on schedule to complete their annual reservoir drawdowns for the Mississippi River Headwaters as well as Red Lake.

The Corps began lowering the Headwaters lakes on October 1,  They also started lowering the larger lakes downstream, however, the drawdowns will take longer due to the size of the lakes and the slow rate of releases.

The lakes are being lowered slowly in order to mitigate issues caused by the lake freezing, while making sure that the necessary storage is available for the spring runoff........

Asian Carp Update

Senators:  Carp Study Moving Too Slow........

Senators from Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin recently voiced their concern that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was falling behind on a study of how a choke point in a waterway could be utilized to keep Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes.

The Corps is looking at ways to bolster defenses against the carp at the Brandon Road Lock and Dam, located near Joliet, Illinois.  A report released last summer estimated that the project could cost $275 million and would take until 2025 to complete.

The Corps has announced that they were extending a public comment period, and would be hosting another public meeting in New Orleans.  Michigan Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters called the Corps' time frame unacceptable........

Angler Reels In Record Skipjack Herring........

The Missouri Department of Conservation recently announced that Kansas City resident, Craig Barulich is the latest record breaking angler in Missouri, when he reeled in a skipjack herring on the Missouri River using a rod and reel.

Barulich caught the fish, which weighed 3 pounds, on November 12.  It broke the previous state record of 2 pounds, 11 ounces.  Barulich noted that he was fishing for walleye and saugers at the time.

Barulich says that the day he caught the state record skipjack herring was the day he caught his first skipjack.  He noted that he didn't realize that he had a possible record fish until he got home........

Several Ghost Ships Wash Ashore Crewed By Skeletons........

This month, there have been at least four ships washed up on the west coast of Japan, some of which had bodies aboard them.  Officials have not confirmed where the ships came from, however, evidence indicates they're from North Korea.

On Monday, the Akita Coast Guard reported that eight skeletons were found in the hull of a wooden vessel that washed ashore on a beach on the northeastern shore of Japan's main island, Honshu.

The mystery vessel was observed drifting off the coast on Friday, however, officials didn't make the grisly discovery until the boat made landfall........

Trumpeter Swans' Population Rebound At Riverlands........

So far this year, a record 1,089 trumpeter swans have arrived at the Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary for their winter stay after migrating from their northern habitat.

This is more than last year's record of 1,022 swans counted at Riverlands, further solidifying the sanctuary's status as home to one of the largest populations of wintering trumpeter swans in the nation.

These numbers represent a significant turnaround for a species of birds that was at one time nearly hunted to extinction across the United States........

Stakeholders, Students Focus On River Valley Issues........

In mid-December, Washington University graduate students will be releasing plans that may alleviate flooding as well as adressing sedimentation issues for stakeholders along the Mississippi River.

Professor Derek Hoeferlin and two assistants developed a highly acclaimed plan for communities in China's Mekong Delta, and students are trying to apply those lessons to the Mississippi River Valley.

Due to funding constraints, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has a backlog of river projects and lock and dam maintenance work.  Chick Theiling with the Corps is eager to see the projects that the students will submit on December 18........

Bright sunshine, great temperatures, calm waters and just a bit of boat traffic.  We ended up at Apalachicola, Florida after dark yesterday and Capt'n Greg pulled along side the city dock with ease.  After we got the Current Reprieve all tied up and secured we joined in the Christmas celebration going on right there at the riverfront and then got a bite to eat,,,,,

Gateway To The West Is Also A Silver Screen Star........

Ever since the final section was fitted into the Gateway Arch in October 1965, it has been the most recognizable symbol of St. Louis.  As a result, when movies and television shows are set in St. Louis, the Gateway Arch usually gets some screen time.  In honor of the 30th anniversary of one of those movie appearances, in Planes, Trains and Automobiles, the St Louis Post Dispatch has compiled a photo gallery covering the history of the Arch in the movies........

Runners Compete In Annual Great River Road Run........

On Saturday, the Alton Road Runners Club hosted the 58th annual  Great River Road Run, and 21 year old Benjamin Richter of Troy completed the 10 mile course in 56:34.  90 seconds later, 22 year old Dustin Price of Herculaneum, Missouri crossed the finish line.

The Great River Road Run offered both 10 and 2 mile courses.  The vast majority of participants chose to run the 10 mile course along the Great River Road.

This tradition started when Alton High School track and cross country coach Jim Wigger took his team out for an after-Thanksgiving run.  Michael Brazier, of Glen Ellyn, Illinois was a member of Wigger's team and participated in the first run, and has yet to miss a Great River Road Run........

Barges To Be Delayed As Corps Removes Rocks........

Commercial barge traffic will see delays along the Mississippi River near Thebes, Illinois, as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers starts on a rock removal dredging project.

The need for dredging in this area has been an issue from late 2012 into 2013, when navigation was nearly shut down due to low water conditions.  Rock removal operations and rainfall made water levels deep enough for navigation.

The current rock removal project is a preventative measure against future low water conditions.  There is no estimate on how long the project will take........

Mississippi River Cruising

A Look At A Modern Riverboat Cruise........

The Mississippi River has been a crucial part of American history, from early exploration, transportation during the Civil War, to the considerable gain to power over the 20th Century.

The sense of adventure of the river was worked into American literature through the work of Mark Twain.  Now, modern luxury travelers are primed to explore the Mississippi River aboard American Cruise Lines' newest ship, the American Song.

The vessel will begin cruising along the Lower Mississippi River out of New Orleans in the Fall of 2018.  After that, the American Song will be headed to the Columbia and Snake Rivers in the Pacific Northwest........

Invasive Carp Found In River........

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reporting that the invasive Asian carp has been discovered in the Wisconsin River.

Recently, there were four bighead carp captured close to the Prairie du Sac Dam.  The DNR also reported that a fifth carp was found dead on the shore.

The carp were found during the DNR's routine survey of the sturgeon population.  Fisheries experts believe that these carp had strayed from larger fish populations further south, and aren't part of an established population........

Sewage Dumped Into The River While Sewer Repairs Are Underway........

This week, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources approved a plan for repairing a cracked sewer main line in Muscatine, Iowa.  Back on October 30, Muscatine's Public Works Department learned of a leak in a force main sewer between a lift station and the Water Pollution Control Plant.

Crews excavated the area and found a four foot long crack in the bottom of the sewer main.  In order to assess the damage, crews had to shut off the line and drain it.  The lift station was shut down to allow the main to drain, resulting in sewage being discharged into the Mississippi River.

Until repairs to the force main are complete, the lift station will be bypassing flow into the Mississippi River.  This may continue for six more weeks.  It is estimated that three million gallons of sewage are being released into the Mississippi River each day........

Mississippi River Near Thebes, Illinois

Rock Removal Expected To Delay Barges........

In late November, and into early December, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is scheduled to begin rock removal dredging operations near Thebes, Illinois.  As a result, barge traffic will encounter delays.

As long as the dredging operations are going on, the U.S. Coast Guard will be restricting northbound tows to 28 barges and southbound tows to 15 barges.

The need for dredging in this section of the river has been a necessity since late 2012 and in to 2013, when extremely low water conditions nearly halted navigation........

Godfrey To Help Fund Clark Bridge Cameras........

The Godfrey Village Board recently a $13,400 "donation" to pay for approximately one third of the cost of installing a license plate reader camera system on the Clark Bridge.

Alton will be spending around $40,000 to install four cameras on the Clark Bridge, which would scan license plates as vehicles pass by.  The idea is to alert police when stolen vehicles, or those owned by people with outstanding felony warrants cross the bridge.

Alton and Madison County's share of the funding for the camera system will come from drug forfeiture funds.  Godfrey Trustee Nathan Schrumpf noted that if any of the arrests result in forfeitures, those funds should go toward paying the village's share........

House Bill May Eliminate Tax Break For Boats........

The current tax laws allow boat and RV owners to deduct interest paid on those loans under the mortgage interest deduction for second homes, including boats and RVs that qualify as such.

Under the proposed Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which passed in the House last week, the tax break on interest paid on second mortgages would be eliminated.

The proposed change, if approved, would take effect in 2018, however, it is not certain that the provision would make into final legislation........

5 Tons Of Trash Collected During Shoreline Cleanup........

During Amren Missouri's26th Annual Fall Adopt-the-Shoreline Cleanup, which ran from September 16 - November 5, 84 volunteers from 14 shore-adoption groups cleaned up over 10,000 pounds of trash from over 500 miles of Lake of the Ozarks shoreline.

The Amren Missouri Adopt-the Shoreline Cleanup program is modeled after the Adopt-A-Highway Program, and encourages organizations and volunteer groups to adopt and annually clean a portion of the shoreline.

Every adopting group has the option of performing their cleanup during the spring or fall, whichever is more convenient for the volunteers.  The flexible schedule allows some groups to clean their section during the spring, as well as an unadopted section during the fall........

Mississippi River Delta

River Diversions Could Harm Oyster Habitats........

Researchers say that between the BP oil spill and Mississippi River diversions may have compromised the delicate balance between salt and water necessary for sustaining oysters off the Louisiana coast.

Scientists with the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation say that they have identified regions that the water is just salty enough to support oysters,  They claim that their research can help oystermen shift their production form coastal areas that are depleted.

Oystermen, however, don't agree. They want salinity restored in the areas that they have cultivated for years.  They add that the situation is critical enough that there won't be enough oysters to sustain the industry........

The "Current Reprieve" headed out from an over night mooring at the Chamber of Commerce Courtesy Dock at Mobile, Alabama and headed upriver a short distance to the nearby Blakeley Boat Works where the 72 foot "Current Reprieve" was pulled from the water for some maintenance work.

Life is good.....

Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings... Yah mon
