Day 14

POWER PLANT AT BUCKS, ALABAMA

AS THE RIVER TURNS

We got a look at the back side of the power plant too as we worked our way around the river bend. (blue dot). Pretty much the way our course went the entire day, lots of curves in the river.  Travel 5 miles to go 2 miles further south.

CHANGING LANDSCAPE

About 25-30 miles from Mobile Bay.

Seeing more moss in the trees along the riverbank.

CHANGING LANDSCAPE

About 25-30 miles from Mobile Bay.

The sand bars have disappeared and have been replaced with mud bars.  The mud bars come and go with the ups and downs of the tidal waters from Mobile Bay

WAITING ON A TRAIN

Waiting on a train to cross the lift bridge about 25 miles above Mobile Bay. After the train crossed the bridge operator raised her for us and we were on our way again...

LAST BRIDGE BEFORE MOBILE

The last bridge before we enter Mobile Harbor.

SHIPS IN MOBILE HARBOR

We went under the last bridge and around the bend in the riverand entered Mobile Harbor.  It was an instant change from the swampy, mud banks on a sleepy river to the hustle and bustle of Mobile Harbor. Ocean going ships loading and unloading their cargo. Harbor tugs everywhere and even a Golf Coast Duck Ride. We seen the Duck Ride on the city streets of Mobile later on as we were eating dinner in town.

MILITARY SHIPS BEING BUILT

Directly across the river from where we moored they were building these babies at Austal..

DOCKED IN MOBILE, ALABAMA

It's Captain Ron, RiverBill, Raven and Ramjet on the Chamber of Commerce Courtesy Dock in downtown Mobile, Alabama.

Almost a 1,000 nautical miles from St. Louis, Mo.

PS: We stopped a gal on a bicycle named Jordan to take our picture.  Thanks Jordan !

The Pictures of the Day....... are from our travels on Sunday, Nov 19, 2017... Day14.

The "Current Reprieve" headed out from an over night tied up to a tree along the bank of the Tennessee–Tombigbee Waterway and continued the journey further south and ended up in Mobile Alabama.

The Pictures of YesterYears.....  were sent to us by Captain Tim Crawford

Hello Bill,

Mark Zuibleman, the lone PWC rider was nice enough to take the photo of Lori and I beached on Iowa Island Thursday November 17th.

The fall colors along the bluffs between Piasa Creek and Grafton were subdued this year, but nice.

See you on the river,
Capt. Tim Crawford

Officials Set To Decrease Releases From The Gavins Point Dam........

Officials have announced that the releases from the Gavins Point Dam will be decreasing throughout the remainder of November, and then lowered incrementally 3,000 cfs per day until arriving at the winter release rate.

John Remus, chief of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Missouri River Basin Water Management Division stated that based upon the September 1 system storage, the releases from the Gavins Point Dam will be at lease 17,000 cubic feet per second.

Remus noted that thanks to higher than normal runoff toward the end of summer and into fall allows the Corps to provide higher winter releases which will provide additional hydropower generation during the winter months........

U.S. Waterways

Toxic Algae Becoming More Of A Hazard........

A few years ago, Todd Steele was participating in a bass fishing tournament on Lake Erie, which was covered by a thick green scum.  Steele ended up being severely sickened by what turned out to be toxic algae, which is a rising threat to U.S. waters.

The toxic algae is increasing from an occasional nuisance to a severe, widespread hazard that is overwhelming government efforts to curb a major contributor, fertilizer runoff from farms.

Scientists say that several of the monster algae blooms are caused by an overdose of agricultural waters in warm, calm waters.  The fertilizers intended to cultivate crops ends up washing into waterways, providing a veritable smorgasbord for algae........

U.S. Coast Guard

Coast Guard Halts Runaway Boat........

On Saturday, the U.S. Coast Guard stopped a boat that had runaway near Pamlico County, North Carolina.  At around 9:45 am, the Coast Guard was called out for a report of a driverless jonboat turning circles in the water.

When responders arrived, they found that a wake had thrown the boat operator into the water and caused the boat's tiller to turn hard over.  A nearby boater was able to pick up the boat's operator.

Responders were able to stop the pilotless boat, and escorted the vessel and it's operator to shore.  Coast Guard officials note that the pilot was not wearing a kill switch, which could have prevented the incident form occurring........

The Pictures of the Day....... are from our travels on Friday, Nov 17, 2017... Day12.

The "Current Reprieve" headed out from an over night dockage the Demoplis Yacht Basin in Demoplis, Alabama on the Tennessee–Tombigbee Waterway and continued the journey further south.

The Demoplis Lock was close by and Captain Greg checked the status before departing the marina. There was early morning traffic in the lock so we spent extra time right where we were.  After a bit we locked through our one and only lock for the day with a group of "Loopers" and we were on our way.   They traveled faster than us and were soon out of our sight.

More bluffs to see, but basically a quit day on the river. I spotted my  first alligator sunning quietly on the bank about 3:45 !  The weather was great ...  definitely a shorts and T-shirt kind of day.

We were in and out of "telephone service" areas all day, so the updates may be a little late now and then.

When we tied her up for the night we were about 799 nautical miles from St. Louis. Greg chose a good spot to tie off to a tree on the bank in a heavily wooded area.and we were set for the night..  After making sure all was secure, we did some maintenance items and then Captain Greg took off his "Captain's Hat", put on his "Chef's Hat.  He made us a great salad for dinner. Yah Mon.

Now, just gotta say.... there were plenty of weird noises coming from up in that woods, but no one (or nothing) ever jumped out and "got us" and we made it thru the nite.

Life is good..... Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings... Yah mon

Car Found In Mississippi River By Fisherman Using Side Imaging Sonar.

The Clayton County Sheriff's Office recently announced that they had discovered a car in the Mississippi River near Marquette, Iowa.  They are looking to the public to help determine how it ended up there.

The Sheriff's Office said that they were first alerted to the vehicle in the river on August 17, when a fisherman who had been using his new side imaging sonar discovered what appeared to be at least one car on the river bottom.

In early November, the Sheriff's authorities teamed up with the La Crosse County Dive Unit to positively locate the car.  While divers located the vehicle, water conditions prohibited looking any closer.  Another dive has been scheduled for next year........

Input Sought For IDOT's Statewide Freight Plan........

The Illinois Department of Transportation is looking for some input from the public about their 2017 Freight Plan, which looks at the importance of air, rail, truck and water transportation within the state, and the challenges these industries face.

The Metro-East economy relies heavily upon the transportation and logistics industry, which is expected to be a major factor in the short and long term futures.

The freight system in Illinois moves over 1 billion tons of freight each year, valued at over $2.97 trillion.  While rail traffic accounts for 450 million tons, truck and barge traffic are also major factors........

Harvest Nearing Completion, River Traffic Up.......

In Late November, barge traffic along the Mississippi River typically increases, as the soybean and corn harvests are wrapping up and barges are heading downstream from the Upper Mississippi River ahead of the coming winter ice.

During the week ending on November 11, 695 barges headed downstream long the locking sections of the Mississippi, Ohio and Arkansas Rivers.

Total tonnage of grain shipped was 1.1 million tons, which was the highest weekly number of barges moving along the locking portions of the river system since July........

More Boats To Be Displayed During Miami Boat Show........

During the upcoming 77th Progressive Miami International Boat Show, the in-water boat displays will increase by over 25 percent to 700 boats.  The 2018 show will run from February 15 - 19, 2018.

The increased number of boats in the water is in part attributed to the Strictly Sail Miami section of the boat show joining the powerboats on Virginia Key.

Thom Dammerich, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association says that the Strictly Sail move will bring 50 boats to the in-water section........

New Savanna/Sabula Bridge Opened Friday........

On Friday, the U.S. 52 - Illinois 64 bridge spanning the Mississippi River between Savanna, Illinois and Sabula, Iowa opened up to traffic.  The new span is over 2,400 feet long and 40 feet wide, with two wider lanes and shoulders.

Construction on the new bridge started back in 2015.  The main span is the focal point of the bridge, featuring a steel tied-arch over the Mississippi River.

The Pictures of the Day....... are from our travels on Thursday, Nov 16, 2017... Day11.

The "Current Reprieve" headed out from an over night anchorage just above the lock and dam at Gainsville, Alabama on the Tennessee–Tombigbee Waterway and continued the journey further south.

We woke up early to a foggy morning and were ready to go only to find out that we had a 2 hour wait to lock through.  So....we had coffee, did a few maintenance things and few personal things and then Raven fixed us a Waffle House style breakfast. Yah Mon. What a beautiful morning once the fog cleared a bit....

After a couple of hours waiting, we got our call on the marine radio from the lock master that we could lock thru ! We did just that with 4 boats that were doing the "Loop" and we were on our way heading further down river in the 72 foot Current Reprieve.

Thursday was a good day on the river with smooth waters, warming temperatures and lots to see. We made an early day of it and stopped in late afternoon at Demoplis, Alabama for fuel and overnight dockage. We had another "wait" there too. It took us about 2 hours to get into the gas dock as the group of "Loopers" arrived about the same time as us and doing the same thing..

After fueling up, pumping out and filling up the water tank we headed next door and docked at the Demoplis Yacht Basin,  Very nice place by the way. Got our slip, made  the boat ready for the night and then it was time for a land adventure. Yes... Off to Walmart for Captain Greg and RiverBill to pick up a few additional supplies.

Life is good..... Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings... Yah mon

Three Anglers Rescued After Boat Capsized........

More often than not, if one goes overboard in the Missouri River, they don't come back.  Three anglers whose boat capsized, tossing them into the river, have beat the odds.

According to police reports, three men were fishing on the Missouri River Monday night, when they threw the anchor off the vessel's stern into the swiftly moving water.

Luckily, Keith Orth was fishing on the shore when he heard an odd splash.  He called 911, and ran to a dock, where he and another man raced out on the water to pull the men out........

Upper Mississippi River

Navigation Season Is Drawing To A Close........

On Sunday, November 19, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District will be closing the Minneapolis locks, signaling the end of the 2017 navigation season.

The only lock affected at this time will be the Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam No.1, which will be closed to both commercial and recreational vessels.  The Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock is still closed to navigation.

The remaining locks in the St. Paul District will stay open until at least December 10, however, changes in environmental factors, such as ice formation, could close the remaining locks sooner........

Lock And Dam No.10 Closing For Maintenance........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District has announced that they will be closing Mississippi River Lock and Dam No.10 at Guttenburg, Iowa to all navigational from December 12 through March 4, 2018.

Sam Mathiowetz, Lockmaster of Lock and Dam No.10 says that the closure will allow crews to make repairs to concrete and armor plating inside the lock chamber.

The repairs are slated to begin in mid-December, and will take several months to finish.  Mathiowetz adds that these repairs will allow safer passage through the lock by creating a smoother transition where the miter gate meets the lock chamber wall........

Powerboat Sales

NMMA:  Sales Increase During The Third Quarter

The National Marine Manufacturers Association recently reported that traditional powerboat retail unit sales increased by 3.8 percent through the third quarter of 2017, which ended in September.

Thom Dammrich, NMMA president says that positive economic conditions, combined with sustained consumer spending have contributed to continued retail sales growth.

Dammrich added that retail sales of aluminum outboards, ski boats, jet boats and personal watercraft have been increasing annually year-over-year compared to 2016, while growth for traditional powerboats was offset by a slight decrease in inboard cruiser sales and a continued decrease in sterndrive sales........

It was a quiet day on the river.  We passed through 4 locks with some waits and delays. Ramjet and Captain Greg replaced an oil line on one of the engines. Internet connections come and go, but are OK.  The weather is "warming" ...... yesterday afternoon was "shorts" time.  The Tenn-Tom Waterway is getting narrower and narrower at this point.

Anglers Casting For Carp ........

Fishermen in Peoria, Illinois are casting their nets into the Illinois River, hoping to catch Asian carp.  The carp are considered to be an invasive species, and officials have been trying to keep them out of the Great Lakes.

Commercial fisherman Orion Briney has been fishing for over 35 years, and he says that hen the water is cold, he has the upper hand.  Briney notes that chilly temperatures slow the carp down.

Briney and his crew sell their catch at markets.  He stated that they catch bighead carp, silver carp, grass carp and buffalo fish, some of which weigh up to 35 pounds........

Are The Corps' Plans Enough To Protect The Great Lakes?

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has made a proposal for halting the progress of silver and bighead carp from the Mississippi River Basin into the Great Lakes.

Cheryl Nenn, with Milwaukee Riverkeeper, says that the proposal is just a starting point, not a solution.  Nenn adds that there are multiple aquatic invasive species threatening the Great Lakes as well as the Mississippi River Basin.

The Nature Conservancy reports that there are ten species in the Mississippi River basin that are a threat to the Great Lakes, while there are 29 species in the Great Lakes that are a threat to the Mississippi River Basin........

Lock 10 closing for maintenance and non-navigation season

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is closing Lock 10, near Guttenberg, Iowa, to all navigation from Dec. 12 to March 4, 2018.

Although Dec. 12 is the latest the lock will be open this season, the closure date is subject to change pending environmental factors – such as the formation of ice – that could dictate an earlier closure.

“The purpose of this closure is to make repairs to concrete and armor plate within the lock chamber,” said Sam Mathiowetz, Lock and Dam 10 lockmaster. “Scheduling this maintenance during the non-navigation season is important so as to minimize the impact to commercial and recreational traffic.”

Repair work is scheduled to begin mid-December, taking several months to complete, and will make for a safer passage by creating a smoother transition where the miter gate and the lock chamber wall meet, said Mathiowetz.

The Tennessee–Tombigbee Waterway

(popularly known as the Tenn-Tom) is a 234-mile (377-kilometer) man-made waterway that extends from the Tennessee River to the junction of the Black Warrior-Tombigbee River system near Demopolis, Alabama, United States. The Tennessee–Tombigbee Waterway links commercial navigation from the nation’s midsection to the Gulf of Mexico. The major features of the waterway are 10 locks and dams, a 175-foot (53 m) deep cut between the Tombigbee River watershed and the Tennessee River watershed, and 234 miles (377 km) of navigation channels.[1] The ten locks are 9 by 110 by 600 feet (2.7 m × 33.5 m × 182.9 m) the same dimension as the locks on the Mississippi above Lock and Dam 26 at Alton, Illinois.[2][3] Under construction for twelve years by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Tennessee–Tombigbee Waterway was completed in December 1984 at a total cost of nearly $2 billion

The Pictures of the Day....... are from our travels on Monday, Nov 13, 2017.  The "Current Reprieve" headed out from an over night anchorage on the Tennessee River near the town of Crump, Tennessee and continued further south to Lake Pickwick and then into the Tennessee–Tombigbee Waterway. We spent the evening at Murphy's Landing, Mississippi where one of Captain Greg's friends, Captain Gerry, spends the winter months.

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

Man Dies After Jumping From Riverfront Park Wall........

Monday morning, responders were called out to the Mississippi River at Alton, after a man jumped to his death from the old lock wall at Riverfront Park.

At 10:20 am, the body of 26 year old Ashton A. Robinson was recovered from the river.  According to Chief Bernie Sebold of the Alton Fire Department, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Team Watters Sonar Search and Recovery, Inc. used sonar to locate Robinson.

Sebold states that there is still a considerable amount of debris on the river bottom from when the old dam was demolished.  He adds that the Alton Fire Department's Marine 1 fireboat is not equipped with sonar equipment for underwater searches........

Fall Colors In The Riverbend

This Week Looks To Be The Peak Of Color........

The peak of fall colors in the Riverbend has arrived, and this week is expected to be the last opportunity to view them in all of their splendor.

The dry conditions and warm weather that has been in the Midwest throughout the late summer and into the fall has caused the late season for the fall colors.

Brett Stawar, President of the Alton Regional Convention and Visitor's Bureau says that since there is a lull in tourism until the holiday season arrives, they are hoping to capitalize on the extended fall color season........

Report:  Clean Water Act Of 1972 Spurred Recovery........

A new report from the University of Illinois reveals that sport fish along the Illinois River are at their highest levels in over a century, and the recovery began after the implementation of the federal Clean Water Act of 1972.

The research paper, Ecological Recovery of a River Fish Assemblage Following the Implementation of the Clean Water Act was published in the journal, BioScience.

The report points to a severe downfall beginning in 1900 due to Chicago sewage, and after the Clean Water Act was implemented, sportfish such as bass, bluegills, catfish, crappies and saugers returned........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Recovering Large Items From The Bottom Of The Lake........

Captain Tim McNitt, operator of Atlantis Dive & Dock Salvage on the Lake of the Ozarks, knows first hand that sometimes strange things end up on the bottom of the lake.

While McNitt is based at the Lake, he does explore deep water in the surrounding states of Kansas, Tennessee and Illinois.  He notes that no dive is routine, especially when recovering large, heavy and expensive items from the deep.

Once, McNitt was tasked with recovering a bulldozer from the bottom of the Lake.  It was 60 feet below the surface, and perched on a ledge with an additional 35 foot drop to the bottom........

New Boats Shifting From Sterndrives........

There are major changes in the works within the sterndrive engine market.  At one time, sterndrives were dominating the cottage runabout category.

These days, outboard engines are holding a complete monopoly on the under 200 horsepower market.  Sterndrives were at one time the go-to power choice for cruisers up to 40 feet, but more and more often, the latest designs are running outboards.

According to data from Statistical Surveys Inc., the annual sales of sterndrive-powered vessels is falling at a rate closely mirrors the corresponding sales increase in outboard-powered vessels........

This pic really did not capture their beauty.

A southern style mansion on the riverbank with a beautiful manicured lawn and a white drive-thru boathouse on the riverbank.

Home for the night...

On the hook at another good anchoring spot. A looper is anchored just down river from us this evening......

The Pictures of the Day....... are from our travels on Sunday, Nov 12, 2017.  The "Current Reprieve" headed out from an over night anchorage on the Tennessee River near the Perryville, Tennessee and continued further South to an over night anchorage spot in a slough near the Shiloh National Military Park / Crump, Tennessee.

The river is narrowing as we go further and further south and the water is getting much clearer. Sort of a quiet day as we only encountered a few tows, The landscape is changing also. The river is getting narrower, we seen lots of nice housing along the high riverbanks and some very expensive homes as well as a couple of old plantation type mansions...

Asian Carp Update

Officials Advise Congress On Carp Control Efforts........

Several federal agencies are tasked with attempting to control Asian carp and they recently presented to Congress the latest report on how their efforts are going.

The Midwest Deputy Regional Director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Charlie Wooley says that the report focuses on the Upper Mississippi River and the Ohio River Basins.

Wooley reports that unfortunately, there is movement of adult silver carp up the Ohio River and they are closing in on Pennsylvania.  As far as the Mississippi River is concerned, there have been a bighead carp and a grass carp caught in the Minnesota River, which is about a hundred miles north of the previous capture on the Mississippi River........

House Bill Expanding Hydroelectric Power Passed........

The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a bill intended to expand hydroelectric power.  Supporters say the bill would boost a clean energy source, but opponents claim it is a giveaway to large power companies.

This bill is sponsored by Washington State Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers, and it redefines hydropower as a renewable energy source and streamlines the way hydroelectric projects are licensed.

While hydropower projects generate close to 70 percent of the electricity in Washington State, over 50 percent in Oregon and Idaho, and 36 percent in Montana.  Nationwide, hydropower only accounts for 7 percent of electricity generated........

Flood Fighting News

Technology Is Applied To Flood Fighting Techniques........

During the Missouri River Valley flooding of 2011, city workers in Fargo, North Dakota deployed what was a basically a giant water balloon across a low lying area near the Rose Creek Golf Course.

According to Nathan Boerboom, a city engineer who was supervising flood control efforts, officials wanted to test the water filled dam to see how it would work during an actual flood.  The golf course was expected to flood, so there would be no harm done if the dam was ineffective.

The water filled dam worked, and as a result, the city put it to use in a higher location, which saved the time and money that a temporary clay dike would have cost........

Day 6

Sunrise as we departed Paris Landing Marina

The old partially submerged at Danville Landing

Danville Wharf and Transfer Station

Mile marker 78 on Kentucky Lake

Danville Transfer Station

The structure is known as the Old Danville Grain Elevator as well as the Danville Wharf and Danville Transfer Station. It was built on the banks of the Tennessee River about 300 yards from the L&N Railroad in 1914. The purpose of the building was to transfer barges of grain and other goods from the river to railcars above.

It contained six levels with the bottom three being open for boats carrying cargo to unload their goods from the river. The lower levels accommodated the water level fluctuation of the river. Two twenty-horsepower elevators carried cargo from the lower levels to trains docked at the fourth level. Primary commodities were peanuts, grain, limestone, iron, and cotton.

It was in operation until the early 1940s when TVA began clearing out the area for the creation of Kentucky Lake

The above reprinted from explorekentuckylake.com.

Since the building was already full of graffiti we decided to leave a RiverBills Sticker on it also. The old concrete was so deteriorated that a sticker would not stick so we put two of them back to back on a piece of rebar sticking out of the structure..

The Tennessee River Light house

Tennessee River mile marker 127

Originally built by Jerry Milam on the Tennessee River, the lighthouse is tucked a bit back on the limestone cliff but is said to have been used for navigational purposes. The round, 70-foot structure gives off a continuous white light.

Day 5

Leaving the lock at Kentucky Lake Dam and heading south on the lake

Eggner Ferry Bridge on Kentucky Lake

The original bridge was built to cross the Tennessee River before Kentucky Lake was planned and was opened to traffic in 1932. In 1943 officials shut it down and built new pilings and raised the structure to make room for the higher water level of Kentucky Lake.

In January 2012 a main span of the bridge collapsed after it was struck by the cargo vessel MV Delta Mariner. The Delta Mariner hit the bridge when it tried to pass through what is known as the recreational channel, which has a lower clearance, instead of the shipping channel.

The new bridge (pictured above) opened for traffic in the summer of 2016. The old bridge has been demolished.

Meramec River Flooding

Future Flood Preparation........

Earlier in the month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers held a Meramec River Flood Risk Workshop, in which they advised attendees that there is more rain and flooding in the future for the Meramec River Valley.

Approximately 70 area residents were joined by the mayors of Kirkwood, Fenton and Valley Park for the workshop.  Before the program began, they introduced themselves, and the damage caused by flooding in their towns since 2015.

Fenton Mayor Josh Voyles says that there is no way to stop rains and flooding, but they welcome the opportunity to discuss ways to prepare for future flooding events........

Upscale Pontoon Boats Gaining Popularity........

About a decade ago, pontoon boats were the Rodney Dangerfield of the boating world, getting no respect.  The National Marine Manufacturers Association says that this is a thing of the past.

These days, pontoon boats represent approximately a third of new boat sales.  They led the way for the recreational marine industry to recover from the Great Recession and the worst boating sales slump in years.

Chuck Collins, the executive director of the Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County, says that pontoon boats are getting younger people into boating, with price and comfort as the leading reasons why........

Upgrades Needed For 75 Year Old Infrastructure........

A recent study commissioned by the National Waterways Foundation and U.S. Maritime Administration highlights the economic benefits of reliable inland navigation.

The focus of the study is four geographically different locks on the Inland Waterway System, Markland Locks and Dam on the Ohio River, Calcasieu Lock on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway in Louisiana, LaGrange Lock and Dam on the Illinois River and Lock and Dam No.25 on the Mississippi River.

This study emphasizes that if the Inland Waterways could not transport the nation's freight, the amount of trucks on rural highways would rise, resulting in increased safety, fuel consumption and highway maintenance........

Sgro was taken to Fisherman's Community Hospital in Marathon, where he was revived several times prior to being airlifted to a Miami area hospital.  During the flight, Sgro took a turn for the worst, forcing the helicopter to land at another medical facility.  He did not survive.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.  The three other people aboard the vessel at the time of the accident were also taken to Fisherman's Community Hospital, however, they were not as badly injured as Sgro was.........

The firefighters brought the blaze under control within 10 minutes, and only three boats were burned in the incident.  Chief Hancock reports that the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.........
