News Release From BoatUS

'Give Way' This Giving Tuesday, Nov. 28

November 9, 2017 – Giving Tuesday, November 28, kick-starts the season of charitable giving. Always celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, this national day of donating also offers boaters ways to give back to boating. The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water asks boaters, sailors and anglers to consider a donation to the boating nonprofit to help support its efforts to reduce boating accidents and increase stewardship of our waterways. Tax-deductible donations can be made at www.BoatUS.org/givingtuesday.
“‘Give Way’ to Giving Tuesday helps recreational boaters understand this is the time of year to give priority to the things we cherish: safe outings on clean waters,” said BoatUS Foundation Assistant Director of Boating Safety Ted Sensenbrenner.
Since 1981, the 501(c)(3) Foundation has offered the largest national life jacket loaner program for kids at more than 575 locations across the United States, the only free online boating-safety course that’s taken by more than 100,000 boaters each year and officially recognized by 36 states, and has funded more than $1.3 million in local boating-safety and clean-water grants allowing local communities to have a positive impact on their own waters.
Headquartered in Annapolis, Maryland, most of the Foundation’s funding comes directly from boaters and waterway users. To make a donation this charitable season or learn more, go to BoatUS.org/givingtuesday.

Corps Starting Work On Repairing French Quarter Floodwall........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is beginning a $4.53 million project to replace a 400 foot long portion of the Mississippi River floodwall near the French Market.

The project involves replacing the existing T-wall with a stronger and taller T-wall in order to reduce the chances of Mississippi River flooding.

According to Matt Roe, the flood wall was the most at-risk point on the Mississippi River and Tributaries project, on account of the bend in the river nearby.  This project will bring th floodwall into compliance with the latest Corps standards........

Illinois River Near Ottawa, Illinois

Public Meeting Scheduled For River Dredge Spoils.........

On Monday, November 13, a public meeting will be held at the Ottawa, Illinois City Hall to discuss proposed disposal sites for dredge spoils from the Illinois River.

Ottawa City Engineer Dave Noble says that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredges the Illinois River regularly to maintain the channel for barge traffic, and they are currently depositing the sandy material in a stockpile near the ADM grain elevator.

This deposit site is nearly filled to capacity, so the Corps needs to find a new location to place the dredged material.  The Corps is seeking the public's input on proposed stockpile locations........

Searchers have been returning to areas of the Mississippi River that they had previously looked for the body of 19 year old Ean Reinhold, who had disappeared more than 3 weeks ago, after a boat he was a passenger in capsized near Lock and Dam No.21.

According to Glenn Sanders of the Quincy Area Volunteer Emergency Corps, searchers are using sonar equipment provided by Christian Aid Ministries search and Rescue, which is an Amish and Mennonite group that assists emergency agencies with finding missing persons.

Sanders says that while they are continuing the surface searches, they are focusing on the sonar search in order to make sure that they don't miss anything........

Recreation Advisory Committee Established

On Tuesday, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke announced that the "Made in America" Recreation Advisory Committee has been established.  This committee will meet around twice per year, and will advise Zinke on public-private partnerships across all public lands.

The goal of the committee is to expand access to public lands, as well as improving infrastructure on public lands and waterways.  Zinke says that there are already thousands of private partners operating on federal lands

The National Marine Manufacturers Association says that the formation of the committee came from work done by the Outdoor Recreation Industry Roundtable.  The NMMA believes that the committee will help improve visitor experiences, via expanded public-private partnerships........

News Release From BoatUS

More Than 40 Million Kidde Fire Extinguishers Recalled

Includes those used for PWCs

ANNAPOLIS, Md., November 6, 2017 – More than 40 million Kidde fire extinguishers equipped with plastic handles, some on the market for more than 40 years, have been recalled. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), “The fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency. In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard.” The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean water is urging recreational boat owners to check their boats for the recalled extinguishers and get a free metal-handled replacement by going to the CPSC recall website.
The recall affects both plastic-handle and push-button Pindicator Kidde fire extinguishers, including 134, ABC- or BC-rated models manufactured between January 1, 1973, and August 15, 2017. The extinguishers are red, white or silver and were sold in the US and Canada through a wide range of retailers from Montgomery Ward to Amazon. The CPSC recall website shows how to easily identify the affected extinguishers.
In the recall, Kidde also acknowledged the free replacement push-button extinguisher being sent to personal watercraft owners is similar in size to the recalled model but may not fit in the same location as the old fire extinguisher. “This may require a slightly different mounting orientation or location,” said BoatUS Foundation Assistant Director of Boating Safety Ted Sensenbrenner.”
CPSC says there have been approximately 391 reports of failed or limited activation or nozzle detachment, including one fatality; approximately 16 injuries, including smoke inhalation and minor burns; and approximately 91 reports of property damage.
Kidde may also be contacted toll-free at 855-271-0773 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET Saturday and Sunday. The company offers additional recall information online at kidde.com by selecting “Product Safety Recall.”

Mississippi River At St. Paul, Minnesota

Tow Strikes, Damages Railroad Bridge........

Recently, a towboat pushing a line of heavy  barges collided with a little-known railroad bridge in St. Paul, Minnesota.  The span's central support structure was knocked off center, causing an estimated $500,000 in damages.

During the early morning hours of October 26, the Cooperative Venture, owned by American River Transportation Co., was pushing several barges loaded with dry goods, when the tow struck the Pig's Eye Railroad Bridge spanning the Mississippi River.

The U.S. Coast Guard reports that there were no spills, but the bridge, owned by Union Pacific railroad, will likely take some time to repair........

Dock Maintenance

Preparing Docks For Inclement Weather........

More often than not, when winter rolls around, boaters end up being taught a tough lesson:  winter weather can wreak havoc on their docks, and their pocket books.

When snow and ice sinks boats and docks, many people learned that there was not much their insurance companies could do to help, leaving boaters with potentially big out-of-pocket expenses.

There are a few things boaters can do to take away some of the worry, starting with checking out the boat lift, making sure that it holds air and all parts are secure.  Next, invest in an agitator or bubbler to prevent ice from forming around the dock.  Lastly, make sure to check the dock cables........

Upper Mississippi River Levees

Corps Discusses Solutions For Future Floods........

Levee experts in the Tri-State region are calling for an action plan to be immediately implemented in order to better fight flooding in the future.  Dennis Hamilton, with the Corps' Rock Island District says that plans are in motion, however, it will take some time.

The Tri-State levee experts are of the opinion that time is not on the side of under-prepared levees.

Michael Flingner, President of the Upper Mississippi, Illinois and Missouri Rivers Association says that the main concern is how can we improve all 140 levee districts to handle a flood like 1993 moving through the valley with minimal property damage and zero loss of life........

Bill,

My wife and I visit Island 521 quite often. The weather being unseasonably warm we stopped there Saturday afternoon. We decided to look for some small wood to make a fire. I was dismayed at what I found. I am not an environmentalist or even an avid recycler type, but this was just terrible. Please send a shout out to all "take your trash with you and leave it decent for the next people to enjoy".

Piasa Harbor: A Relaxing Place Along The Great River Road........

For the better part of the last five years, the Piasa Harbor along the Great River Road has been in a state of flux.  Earlier in the decade, the Great Rivers Land Trust purchased the property, and has been changing it ever since.

Mother Nature has made changes to the property as well, the latest occasion saw a dock destroyed, boats tossed about and a building damaged badly enough that officials have determined that it must be taken down.

Despite the damage, Allie Ringhausen, the Executive Director of the Great Rivers Land Trust says that Piasa harbor is a great spot to stop and relax while driving along the Great River Road between Alton and Grafton........

Officials Hope To Wrap Up River Work On New Bridge Soon........

Contractors say that the goal for the Highway 47 Bridge project is to have work in the Missouri River completed by spring in order to keep the project on schedule for a completion date in fall 2018.

Judy Wagner, the Area Engineer for the Missouri Department of Transportation recently advised members of the Washington Area Highway Transportation Committee that work would be continuing throughout the winter.

Earlier this year, historic high water levels set construction back.  Wagner says that there is a few months worth of work to do in the river, and they are hoping to be finished in time for the spring flooding........

Upper Mississippi River Levees

Tri-State Levees Fighting Increased River Levels, Regulations........

The Mississippi River levees in the Tri-States region are facing a two-front battle, the first being the threat of future flooding, and the second, excessive regulations.

Mike Klingner, President of the Upper Mississippi, Illinois, Missouri Rivers Association says that they're just a disaster waiting to happen.

Roger Sutter, President of the Fabius River Drainage District says that higher levees would be better, however, regulations set in place by the Rock Island District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers prevents that........

Missouri River Diversions

Push To Divert Missouri River Water To Red River Valley Gaining Momentum........

The drive to divert water from the Missouri River to the Red River Valley is speeding up, and officials believe that construction work on the $1 billion project could begin in 2019.

The 165 mile long pipeline will be used to augment water supplies during times of drought in cities such as Fargo and Grand Forks, however, industrial water users will be able to tap into the pipeline as well.

35 rural and community water systems across central and eastern North Dakota have signed onto the project, which will pipe Missouri River water to the Sheyenne River, which is a Red River tributary........

Fishing News From The Great Lakes

Great Lakes Salmon Population Falling........

The population of king salmon in the Great Lakes has decreased considerably, and an expert is saying the reason for the decrease is that invasive species have caused a decrease in prey populations.

According to Vic Santucci, the Lake Michigan program manager for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the main threat to the salmon population is the decreasing prey fish population.

The prey fish population decrease is linked to invasive species, such as zebra and quagga mussels, which change the lower trophic food web, making it more difficut for prey fish such as the alewife to survive........

Made it back in time for the boat clubs Queen of Hearts draw that is now over 13,000.00 with only about 14 cards left. It’s open only to club members but has turned out to be a big party on Thursdays. See you on the River.

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

Riverboat Season Has Come To A Close........

On October 29, the final riverboat of the season stopped in Hannibal, Missouri.  The busy season wrapped up with the arrival of the America

Gail Bryant, the director of the Hannibal Convention and Visitors Bureau noted that end of this year's riverboat season featured 10 riverboat dockings during September and October, which was more than half of all of the dockings last year.

Bryant says that some of the riverboat companies have started submitting tentative schedules for next year.  Since the main complaint riverboat passengers have is that their stay is too brief, some of the riverboats are planning for longer dockings........

New Orleans Set To Add 2 Riverboats Next Year........

The Golden Age of steamboats an the era of Mark Twain might be ancient history, but cruising along the Mississippi River is seeing a bit of a renaissance.

Next year, New Orleans will be celebrating it's tri-centennial, and there will be two more riverboats operating out of the Big Easy, near the French Quarter.  Both vessels are former casinos that will receive extensive renovations.

Hospitality Enterprises New Orleans announced that they had purchased the City of Evansville, which after renovations, will be known as the Louis Armstrong.

The New Orleans Steamboat Co., owners of the Natchez recently acquired the former Casino Rock Island, which after being refit, will begin cruising as the City of New Orleans........

The event is intended to help promote Missouri River Relief's advocacy goals, which includes the preservation of the river's condition.

In the fall of 2016, the Missouri River Rendezvous was held in the eastern part of Missouri at Augusta.  This year, organizers chose to hold the rendezvous in St. Joseph because of it's history, but also because the town has active river supporters........

Corps Re-Engineer Pool 4 River Sand Plans........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is working on putting together a new management plan for the handling of river sand dredged from the Mississippi River in Lower Pool 4, near Alma and Wabasha.

Earlier this year, the Corps unveiled a sand management plan that drew extensive criticism from area residents, prompting them to rethink their strategy.

The original plan called for the acquisition of land for sand placement, along with trucking of sand from deposit locations to placement sites, much to the dismay of area residents.

As a result, the Corps is reconsidering the issue, and working on alternative plans for dealing with dredged sand.  A possible plan for Wabasha would be the construction of a barge facility to load or off load sand to be used by a sand, gravel and ready-mix business........

Chinese Business Brings Prosperity To Small Town........

For better than 43 years, 62 year old Kentucky fisherman, Mark Buttler has been fishing the Mississippi River daily, and prior to 2013, he sold his catch to either a fish market up north, or to a seafood restaurant in Ledbetter, Kentucky.

After Angie Yu arrived in Wickliffe, Kentucky and opened Two Rivers Fisheries to process fish from the Mississippi River, Buttler began selling his haul to her.

Wickliffe Mayor George Lane says that Two Rivers Fisheries has brought a bit of hope to the town of about 800 residents, as the company employs 16 local people who do the processing work.

A new contract, and a new Immersion Freezing Technique will boost the production of the fish exporter, which will result in the need for an additional 300 workers........

Mississippi River At Moline, Illinois

New Bridge To Sylvan Island Nearly Complete........

Crews are working on putting the finishing touches on the new 12 by 200 foot bridge over the Sylvan Slough to the 35 acre Sylvan Island.  The span is expected to open to the public by December 6.

Back in April 2013, officials determined that the previous 145 year old span was not safe for foot traffic, so the City of Moline blocked off the walkway to keep people from crossing it.  Since that time, Sylvan Island has only been accessible by boat.

In October, crews dismantled the former foot bridge with a crane mounted on a barge on the Sylvan Slough, which is a secondary channel of the Mississippi River.........

Park Board To Restore Lost River Island........

Later this month, crews will begin reconstructing a lost island in the Mississippi River in northeastern Minneapolis, which will create a new destination for wildlife watchers and paddlers.

The construction of the 3.3 acre island will restore a channel between the mainland and what was once Hall's Island.  Several decades ago, the area had been filled in by Scherer Bros to expand their mill operations.

Work will involve the expansion of the shoreline into the river, and replace contaminated soil with clean soil and fill in order ot construct habitat for animals and migrating birds........

Hall Street Cleanup AND "River to the Heart" film premiere........

Greetings, River Citizens and Volunteers,

In case you are not doing anything this weekend, here are at least two great events you can go to!

•Our friends at Greenway Network are hosting Hall Street Cleanup Block Party. which is forwarded below. (Serious volunteers only)
•Paddler, Eddy Harris' film, River to the Heart is premiering at the Tivoli Theater during the St. Louis International Film Festival:

"Former St. Louisan Eddy L. Harris is the author of the lauded travel book “Mississippi Solo” (1988), which chronicled his canoe trip down the length of the Mississippi River, from its headwaters in Minnesota to its terminus in the Gulf of Mexico. In “River to the Heart,” Harris retraces that journey as a 60-year-old, and the film explores what he discovered about both the country that was and the country that is. As he paddles the long miles, Harris contemplates the meaning of the river to the country and to the people who populate it. In the process, he meets and interviews representative folks along the way and tackles a wide range of topics: the racial and economic divide in the U.S., environmental concerns (particularly man’s efforts to control the river and the unexpected results), the emptying out of small-town America, the disconnect between urban dwellers (especially African Americans like Harris) and nature, and the outsized shadow that Mark Twain casts over our thoughts on the river. Harris proves a highly personable and informative guide, and St. Louis is one of the prominent stops along his journey."

I hope to see some of you this weekend! (Feel free to call me if you have any questions--618-520-9749)

Thanks,
Tanner Aljets

Illinois Assisting Alligator Gar Back To The Top Of The Food Chain........

Alligator gar are known as a tough fish that is hard to kill, after all, they have survived in the waters of North America for better than 100 million years.

Recent history, however, has not been as kind to the predators who are best known for their size and tooth filled mouths.  By the late 60's aggressive fishing took the gar to extinction in Illinois waters.

In recent years, state controlled efforts have been working to slowly help North America's second-largest freshwater fish regain a foothold in Illinois waterways........

Fall Colors Predictions......Missouri Department of Conservation foresters update "Fall Color" reports weekly from mid-September through early-November.

St. Louis Region:
The cooler temperatures and hard freezes in the outlying areas have moved fall color into peak or to past peak in most areas. Closer to St. Louis city, you can still see some green, but that is likely to change rapidly. With most oaks now joining in the fall color parade, there are more wide vistas of color, but drought and recent hard freezes have limited the color, especially compared to most fall seasons. Sugar maple, sycamore, hickories, and oaks are providing the most consistent colors in wooded areas, with sweet gum and some dogwoods and sassafras added to the mix in urban and suburban St. Louis. Expect color to be short-lived in cooler valleys outside of the metro area, with more green lingering in St. Louis due to the urban heat-island effect

Click here for this week's "Fall Colors" forecast.

River History....

November 3, 1992 in River History

Missouri voters approved the referendum to allow riverboat gambling on the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers.  The first boats had to cruise the rivers and gambling was only allowed while cruising. In 2000 the law was changed to allow continuous boarding, and cruising was no longer required.

Boating Safety

A Pre-Departure Inspection Might Safe The Day........

Preparedness is constantly being drilled into boater's heads, with reminders to wear your life jacket, file float plans, keep fire extinguishers handy and have a marine radio aboard.

Something that should be considered prior to leaving the dock is a pre-departure inspection of the boat, including things like the installation of the drain plug, the operation of the blower as well as the bilge pump........

Damaged Piasa Harbor Building Will Be Demolished....  After Auction....

Back in April, heavy storms damaged a restaurant/convenience store at the former Piasa Harbor.  The building is set to be demolished, but not before it's contents are auctioned off.

The building was constructed in 2001, and purchased by the Great Rivers Land Trust in 2009.  Once taken down, the land will be filled in and utilized as green space.

Executive Director of the Great Rivers Land Trust, Alley Ringhausen says he is hopeful that the building is down by the end f the year.  He added that before demolition, he wanted to remove the usable materials from the building.

The auction is set for November 11, and will include fixtures, commercial kitchen and store equipment, construction items like doors, a full size bar, and three boats........

Unscheduled Lock Closures Cost Shippers Big Bucks........

On Wednesday, a study was released by the National Waterways Foundation and the Maritime Administration which looked at the economic effects of unscheduled lock outages, and spotlights the economical benefits of reliable inland waterways navigation.

The study, The Impacts of Unscheduled Lock Outages observed four locks along the Mississippi, Illinois, and Ohio Rivers, and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, which supports traffic along every part of the Mississippi River System.

The study results reveal that an unscheduled lock outage at any one of these points occurs, the shipper supply chain cost burden expected is estimated at over $1 billion annually........

Mississippi River At Cape Girardeau, Missouri

A Look Back At The History Of Water Street........

Water Street fronts the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and since the region's settlement in the 1700s, Water Street has been the city's hub of commercial activity.

Businesses lined one side of Water Street, and bordering the other side of the street were railroad tracks, and of course, the Mississippi River and riverboats.

These days, the businesses along Water Street remain, but between the railroad tracks and the Mississippi River, there is Cape Girardeau's floodwall, complete with the Mississippi River Tales mural.  One thing that hasn't changed is that riverboats still tie up along the riverfront........

Leak Discharging Small Amounts Of Sewage Into The River........

On Wednesday, officials in Muscatine, Iowa announced that a sanitary sewer is overflowing, and discharging small amounts of untreated wastewater into the Mississippi River.  Repairs may take a few days to complete.

A leak was spotted at an intersection on Tuesday, and a sewer system lift station had to be shut down for repairs to be made.  The shutdown is what caused the overflow.

Officials estimate that between 5 pm Tuesday and 5 pm Wednesday, three million gallons of untreated wastewater was discharged into the Mississippi River........

It started with a renter having a candle too close to his mattress and by the time he noticed it it was too far out of control for him to stop it. It was so sad to see this place up in flames...my grandpa helped build these apartments and now they are gone.

Everyone did get out of the building safely, but were not able to take anything with them.

The Pictures of YesterYears On This Day in 2016........ were sent to us by Mark Dinzebachil who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis in the boat.... Sunny Isles

Hi Bill

We took advantage of the beautiful day on Saturday and got a boat ride in before having to put the toys away for the winter. The first photo was taken by Pam and is of our granddaughter, Captain Makayla and myself. She is hard at work steering the Sunny Isles between the red and green buoys.

The second photo was taken by Scott Rupich. We decided to cruise through River Island Marina and we ran into Sue and Erie out enjoying a ride.

Enjoy the river while you can!

More Information About Hwy 67 Flood Project........

Last week, officials announced a proposed flood mitigation project for the southbound lanes of Highway 67 in West Alton.  The East-West Gateway Council of Governments have endorsed the proposal.

The proposal involves raising the lower southbound lanes of Hwy. 67 from Alton into Missouri, which typically is hit by minor to moderate flooding.

Recently, a grant was awarded for some of the preliminary planning for the project.  Missouri Department of Transportation Project Manager Lisa Kuntz says that if all goes to plan, construction could begin by 2020 or 2021........

Former Casino Boat Set To Become Floating Jazz Club........

A recently closed casino riverboat left it's longtime home along the Ohio River at Evansville, Indiana, and is making it's way to New Orleans, Louisiana.

On Monday, the riverboat was moved to a marine services dock, so that it's smokes stacks could be removed for the trip down the Ohio, and eventually the Mississippi River.

The former Tropicana Evansville boat will be renamed the Louis Armstrong, and after being refit, is expected to begin operating as a floating jazz club and restaurant by mid 2018.

Theft

Thieves Are Stealing Millions Of Dollars Worth Of Boat Engines ........

Across the nation, investigators are noting an increase in the theft of powerboat outboard engines.  The main target seems to be Yamaha outboard engines.

Florida leads the nation in boat thefts, and often times, these thefts are caught on camera.  Even with this evidence, the National Insurance Crime Bureau reports that only about 36 percent of the stolen vessels are recovered.

The thefts of outboard engines are harder to solve, as they are easier to steal, transport and hide.  Yamaha does offer a theft deterrent system that disables the fuel and ignition systems,,,,,,,,
