The life jacket loaner program began back in 2008, and has been funded via donations and grants.  To date, over 40,000 life jackets have been loaned out through the program........

New I-74 Bridge Questions Answered........

Monday, there were better than 100 residents attending an informational meeting hosted by Moline Mayor Stephanie Acri, where experts were on hand to answer questions about the new Interstate 74 Bridge over the Mississippi River.

The new span is a basket handle true arch twin bridge, and is estimated to cost $2.1 billion.  The project is expected to be completed in late 2020, following three and a half years of work.

The westbound span will feature an additional 14 foot wide recreational lane intended for pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles.  At the mid point of the span, the lane will have a glass bottom, allowing for a view of the Mississippi River below........

MDC Stocking Trout In STL Lakes Next Month........

Thanks to the Missouri Department of Conservation, and their winter trout program, the metro St. Louis region is a great place to fish for rainbow trout during the winter time.

The winter trout season in the MDC's St. Louis Urban Fishing Program begins in November, which is great news for trout anglers that only need to drive minutes to fish, as opposed to driving hours to a Missouri Trout park.

Every year during the cold weather months, the MDC will stock around 38,000 rainbow trout in 12 St. Louis City and County lakes, in addition to the five lakes at the MDC August A, Busch Conservation Area in St. Charles........

FEMA Released Letter Of Final Determination For Revised Flood Maps........

The Federal Emergency Management Agency recently released a Letter of Final Determination stating that the revised flood plain maps for the Lake of the Ozarks are slated to become law on April 18, 2018.

Back in February, FEMA published a proposed flood elevation determinations, which affect the Flood Insurance Rate Map and the Flood Insurance Study for the incorporated regions of Camden County.

During the appeals period, FEMA received no valid requests for changes in the Base Flood Elevations, and therefore, the agency has determined that the BFE's for the community are considered to be final........

My Love For The Mighty Mississippi River

Hi, my name is Bonnie Engler and I have been at lake center marina for 35 years. I boat 3-6 times a week, mostly by myself. I bring my grandkids all summer but their moms won’t let them skip school now so I have to boat alone. I don’t care. I love it so much. our boat is called the Bonnieippi although the name is not on it yet. I have a 20 foot 24 year old Wellcraft and love it. our 4th boat. I was out last thurs. 10/26/17 and it was to die for beautiful, but I think that will be my last day this year. Last year we boated on Nov. 17; what a bonus year for me. The happiest day of the year is when I put my boat back in the water (from stack storage) and the saddest is when I have it winterized. I love to cruise, beach it and drop anchor and float. I love to pull skiers, tubers, knee boarders and wake boarders; all of which my girls and grandchildren do. I sometime have 3 tubes behind my boat. I am extremely careful with the ropes tho. promise. I always have one adult in boat in jacket in case something goes wrong, they can just jump in and don’t have to fiddle with finding a jacket and getting it on, but in all my years boating, I have never had a mishap.!!!! Very lucky I am sure. I am 69 years old and the river is in my blood.

This is why I am writing. I stay in the channel at all times or only in the cut throughs I know well. Some get very shallow cuz I have a depth finder and I never, never see an Asian carp. now, I have and even had 2 jump in my boat, horrible, bled everywhere, but I find they are only in shallow waters. When I have skiers or tubers I always stay deep and we have never even seen one. I am horrified at what they are doing to the rivers, but I still find boating extremely safe on the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. We have 3 daughters and 7 grandchildren and never, in all our years of boating, had one accident or mishap or one medical issue of any kind. no infections, ears or otherwise.

Just wanted to write cuz of my love for the mighty Mississippi River, one of God’s greatest gifts to the world. Thank you for listening.

God bless always,

Bonnie Engler

ps thanks for your wonderful website!!!!

Man Exchanges Job For A Kayak........

Adam Elliot is a native of Natchez, Mississippi.  He spent his childhood along the Mississippi River, and was taught to admire the beauty of the river, but to be wary of it.

Elliot says that he had always been told to stay away form the river, that the whirlpools would suck you in.  He says that he stayed away until his late 20s.

About the time that Elliot hit the river, he was dissatisfied in his job.  He ended up leaving that job, and paddling down to the Gulf of Mexico.  These days, he is an official river guide and manager of the Natchez outpost of the Quapaw Canoe Company........

Stan Musial Fire Boat

Oct 30, 2013 in River History

The St. Louis firefighters put the new "Stan Musial" fire boat through its paces hours after arriving on the St. Louis riverfront on the Mississippi River in St. Louis on October 30, 2013. It's radio call sign, "Marine Unit 6" for St. Louis Cardinals slugger Stan Musial, is a 44-foot, state of the art fire boat able to reach speeds of 38 knots. French Quarter Floodwall To Be Replaced........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently announced that they will be replacing a 500 foot long section of the Mississippi River flood wall in New Orleans' French Quarter.

The $4.5 million project will involve the removal of an existing T-wall, and replacing it with a new T-wall with a height of 22.6 feet above sea level, which is 1.7 feet higher than the existing wall.

The project is expected to take 18 months, and will require the installation of steel sheet piles below the concrete pad that the wall will be built on.  18 inch diameter steel pipe pilings will be driven diagonally from the pad to increase the wall's stability........

Wooden Rail Bridge Set To Be Removed Soon........

A wooden trestle bridge spanning the Mississippi River at Bemidji, Minnesota has been slated for removal by the Bemidji City Council.

The span is over 100 years old, and was formerly used by the Soo Line Railroad Co.  Earlier this year, the state's bridge engineer had recommended the permanent closure of the span on account of several pilings shearing off at the water level.

Bemidji Public Works Director Craig Gray says that the span, which was built in 1910 and retired in 1990, will be removed sometime prior to the beginning of May........

RiverBill,

Went out on river Wednesday evening after the wind died down and it turned out very nice. Earlier that day there were three foot rollers with white caps everywhere. A few people in canoes also made it out for the nice sunset.

New Committee Breathes Life Into 'Dinky' Project........

Grafton city officials have spent years working to create a replica of the "Dinky", which was a 1930s railbus that offered commuter service between Grafton and Alton.  The Dinky has come to be a symbol of Grafton.

Last week, a new committee was appointed by Grafton officials with the intent of reviving the Dinky project.  Committee member Ed Anderson says that they are trying to come up with a budget and game plan for the project.

Anderson says that they will start breaking on the Dinky display site next week.  Committee members have acquired about 60 feet of train track on which they will be displaying the Dinky when the project is complete........

Highway 67 Improvements Will End Flooding Issues........

Last week, the East-West Gateway Council of Governments voted to proceed with a road improvement project intended to reduce and eliminate flooding along the section of Highway 67 that runs through West Alton to the Clark Bridge.

The Transportation Improvement Project will involve raining the southbound lanes of Highway 67 between the river to north of Machens Club Drive in West Alton.  This area is extremely prone to flooding.

The project will include the addition of traffic signals at the intersection of Riverlands Way and Highway 67.  The intersection frequently has accidents occurring, and frequently floods.

The Highway 67 improvement project is expected to be wrapped up by 2020........

IDNR Reintroducing Alligator Gar Into The River........

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is reintroducing alligator gar into the Kaskaskia River.  Crews recently stocked 500 young alligator gar into the Kaskaskia River in southwestern Illinois.

Randy Sauer, a stream specialist with the IDNR says that they are hoping that within 11 or 12 years, the females will begin reproducing and replenishing the gar population.

Sauer notes that the alligator gar is an apex predator that was once a vital part of the ecosystems in the southern Illinois waterways........

Someone stole my tree stand off of Dardenne Island. If anyone knows of someone that stole my

"Buddy Stand" off of Dardenne Island message me. I had it locked up so me and my step son could hunt out of it during rifle season. Went out this morning to hang it and it was gone. The only ones that could of seen it would of been someone scouting the area out to deer hunt because of where it was locked up at. If the person or persons that did this see this post, I hope you would take it back out and put it where u found it.

Pacific Previews Flood Inundation Map........

Officials in Pacific have delayed a request for $5,000 which would be put toward the creation of a virtual flood inundation maps of the Meramec River at Pacific.

Alderman Carol Johnson says that she wanted to get a better idea of what the city was getting for it's investment, and what the total cost of the project would be prior to approving a contribution.

Earlier in the month, officials had previewed the United States Geological Survey's Meramec River Flood Inundation Mapping program, which is based upon water levels at the geuge.

USGS Engineer Rick Huizinga says that the interactive tool would improve flood warnings and emergency management.  He added that the project has already created mapping for Meramec River flooding for Fenton and Eureka........

Take A Trip To The Headwaters Of The Mighty Mississippi........

The Mississippi River as we know it is a powerful river that cannot be completely tamed, however, it does have rather humble beginnings, where it begins flowing as a trickle at Minnesota's Lake Itasca State Park.

The "official" beginning of the Mississippi River is where water from Lake Itasca trickles over a small dam capped with strategically placed boulders.

The spot is marked by a sign stating "Here 1,475 feet above the ocean the Mighty Mississippi begins to flow on it's winding way 2,552 miles to the Gulf of Mexico........

Asian Carp Update

Asian Carp DNA Found In Lake Huron........

Dave Myett, a counselor with Saugeen Shores announced that the Ministry of Natural Resources advised him that they have found Asian carp DNA in Lake Huron.

Myett states that at this point, it is impossible to tell how many carp are present, or how big they are.  He adds that the fish are a rather elusive species, and anyone who catches one, or spots a dead one should contact the Ministry.

Myette notes that given the size Asian carp can grow to, and their ability to reproduce, once they reach a body of water, they can potentially out eat and dominate other species........

Fall Colors Predictions......Missouri Department of Conservation foresters update "Fall Color" reports weekly from mid-September through early-November.

According to the Missouri Department Conservation website... The conditions are right for a colorful fall this year. Plentiful spring rains and a mild summer should produce a great year for fall colors.

St. Louis Region:

It is an interesting fall color season, to say the least. From Lincoln County to Washington County, you can find areas that are still mostly green to areas that are past peak color. Much of the region is still under moderate drought conditions, which has had a significant impact on fall color, limiting most displays to individual trees rather than creating broad, colorful landscapes. Where oaks haven’t already turned brown or lost their leaves, many are beginning to show some hints of their yellow to russet colors, and their color change usually indicates the peak of the season. Hickories and sugar maples are providing a decent display of yellow, with an occasional dogwood or sassafras showing red and purple hues. Sweet gum and the maples have good color in the urban areas. A hard frost is expected for the outlying areas this weekend, which may signal the end of color in some areas, so now is the time to take your fall trip.

500 Year Old Wooden Canoe Will Be Displayed At Museum........

A wooden canoe crafted by Native Americans several centuries ago is about to be displayed in a new Mississippi Museum.  The canoe is about 25 feet long and was built from a bald cypress tree that was nearly 200 years old.

Museum Curators stated that the Native Americans burned, scraped, and chipped away at the cypress tree trunk to create the canoe between 1500 AD an1600 AD.

The canoe was found in 1989 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers while dredging in Steele Bayou in the Mississippi Delta.  These types of vessels were used by Native Americans to travel along major waterways........

ANNAPOLIS, Md., October 26, 2017 – If your boating takes you through crowded harbors, across shipping lanes or on foggy seas, then you know the feeling in your stomach when you have to ask yourself, “What’s that vessel doing?” Automatic Identification System, or AIS, can give you the answer, but is this collision-avoidance technology right for you? The answer to that question can be found by taking the new online course offered by the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water and the United States Power Squadrons, “AIS Electronics for Boaters – See and Be Seen on the Water.”
Available for a limited time at the special price of just $15 using coupon code AIS15 at BoatUS.org/AIS, “AIS Electronics for Boaters – See and Be Seen on the Water” offers a blend of practical knowledge with technical know-how and is a simple and easy way to get up to speed on this important navigation technology that more recreational boaters bring aboard every year. From discovering the different types of AIS and what each offers to learning important terms such as “update rates” and “time to closest approach,” boaters will get a full look at AIS and how it can increase safety. Upon completion, boaters will be able to build out a sample AIS component system for installation for their own vessel.
“The course is designed for boaters – not marine electronics technicians – and our online learning system makes it easy to learn at your own pace from the comfort of your own PC or tablet,” said BoatUS Foundation Director of Education Amanda Suttles Pérez. “Users can stop and start again right where they left off or review previous information at any time. It’s great for when schedules are tight.”
For more information on all online courses offered by the Foundation, go to BoatUS.org/courses.

Brunswick Releases Third Quarter Results........

Brunswick Corp. reported net sales of $1.14 billion for the third quarter of 2017, which is a 4.4 percent increase from the $1.1 billion posted in the third quarter of 2016.   Net sales for the engine segment increased by 7 percent t $669.2 million.

Certain issues during the third quarter, such as the continually declining sterndrive sales and disruptions to production caused by Hurricane Irma caused a decrease in boat earnings.

The marine engine segment posted net sales of $669.2 million, a 7 percent increase from last year's $625.7 million.  International sales, representing 30 percent of total sales in the third quarter increased 14 percent during the third quarter of 2017........

Two Women, Dogs Rescued After Months Lost At Sea........

On Wednesday, two women and their dogs were rescued after being lost at sea for several months.  The pair were attempting to sail from Hawaii to Tahiti.

A Taiwanese fishing vessel spotted the disabled boat about 900 miles southeast of Japan, and alerted the U.S. Coast Guard.  The U.S. Navy's USS Ashland arrived the next day, and took Jennifer Appel and Tasha Fuiaba aboard.

The ladies apparently lost their engine during bad weather back in May, but thought that they could still make it to Tahiti using the sails........

Check this dude out. This was Saturday 10/20. We don't know who he is but he sure was having fun on our wake. Just wanted to know if you could post these so hopefully he will see them. We had a beautiful cruise from Harbor Point Yacht Club to St. Charles stopping for lunch at Longshot Saloon in Portage. The colors of the trees were probably better last weekend but they still looked good this weekend. We are sending you a few pictures so take your pick of the ones you want to post. Fishy Tales From St. Louis, Missouri

New Aquarium Will Feature Mississippi, Missouri River Species........

The owners of Union Station have announced that they will commence construction on an aquarium at the downtown attraction in about a week, with the intention of opening in May, 2019.  Groundbreaking for the project is set for November 2.

Bob O'Loughlin, CEO of Lodging Hospitality Management said that the aquarium will focus on local marine species from the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers.  He adds that the facility will be including more exotic attractions such as sharks and species from the Caribbean as well.

The aquarium is portion of the planned $160 million "family entertainment complex" in Union Station.  Other attractions planned for the complex is a 200 foot Ferris wheel and a fire and light show at Union Station's small lake........

Confluence Tower Changing To Winter Hours........

Over the past six years, the Lewis and Clark Confluence Tower has been hemorrhaging money.  According to Hartford Mayor Jim Hickerson, maintenance and upkeep of the tower costs an average of $59,000 per year.

The tower was originally funded by grants, donations and a considerable amount of village funding.  Hickerson declined to comment on how much funding the village contributed to the tower project.

In order to stem the money loss, the village has cut staff hours and wages.  Hickerson says that this year, the village is going a step further by making the autumn and winter months available by appointment only........

A Bit of Corps Of Discovery History

Lewis And Clark Took On Different Roles........

During the exploration of the Missouri River, and the rest of the Louisiana Purchasethe Co-commanders of the Corps of Discovery, William Clark and Meriwether Lewis performed very different duties.

Clark was the better boatman, so he spent the majority of his time on the boat, as navigating the swift, dangerous and ever-changing Missouri River required an experienced eye.

Lewis' training and personality lent him more toward a solitary scientific bent.  He often walked and explored the landscape adjacent to the river, where wonders seemed to be awaiting discovery lurked behind every corner........

Island Restoration Project Starting Soon........

Next month, crews will begin work on a $6.7 million construction project that will restore an island in the Mississippi River in the northeastern Minneapolis region.

Work on Hall's Island will involve the restoration of natural habitat, and the creation of a 3,000 foot long channel for boating and kayaking between the island and the river bank.

An official with the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization said that the project is intended to improve access to the river and restore the island's ecosystem, which was damaged by industry........

Grafton's Towboat Days Are Coming Up

The Grafton Harbor will be hosting the Annual Towboat Days, which will be held at the Grafton Harbor on November 4th and 5th, from 11 am to 4 pm.

The river will be the focus of the event as a towboat ties up at the Grafton Harbor for the festival.  Attendees will be able to tour the Luhr Bros.' "Most Pristine Towboat", visit interactive learning stations manned by personnel from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Coast Guard, and hear stories from towboat captains.

The towboat tours will cost $3 for adults and $1 for children.  This year, kids will be able to board the Gypsy Rose Land Ship and play in a bounce house on Sunday.  Both of these activities are free........

Legislators Recommend Scrapping Levee Deregulation Proposal........

An Illinois state legislature committee has been considering new rules that would place restrictions on the Illinois Department of Natural Resources ability to regulate the state's levees.

Two Riverbend legislators, Senator William Haine and Representative Jay Hoffman recently wrote letters to the IDNR's Director of Water Resources, Wayne Rosenthal requesting that the proposed rules be tossed out.

Haine notes that the proposed changes move the state in the wrong direction, and places people at risk.  Hoffman says that he was concerned about the effects caused by constricting the river.  He adds that levees protect infrastructure, but that protection comes at a cost........

MoDOT Prepping For Meramec River Bridge Replacements........

On Tuesday, the Missouri Department of Transportation hosted an informational public forum in order to discuss plans for the replacement of the two Interstate 44 bridges over the Meramec River.

MoDOT Area Engineer Karen Yeomans stated that the bridges are approaching the end of their lives, so they must be replaced.  The project is expected to begin in the fall of 2018.

It is expected that the project will also improve traffic flow from Interstate 270 to westbound Interstate 44 with the addition of a separate path for I-270 traffic taking the Soccer Park Exit off of I-44........

River Shipping Still Lagging During Fall Harvest........

As the fall harvest is being sent to the U.S. rivers for shipment to the Gulf of Mexico, high water in some areas, low water in other areas, and infrastructure issues have conspired to slow shipments.

The biggest problem area this fall has been along the Ohio River at Brookport, Illinois, as the rising water at Lock and Dam No.52 caused it to be shut down for close to a week.  This resulted in a backlog of close to 60 vessels with more than 650 barges.

This closure was in addition to another closure at Lock and Dam No.53, which was caused by a hydraulic system failure.  The hydraulic system opens and closes the lower wicket gate........

Report:  Plane Flew Low Over River Prior To Striking Power Lines.......

The National Transportation Safety Board has released the preliminary accident report, which concludes that the small plane that crashed into the Mississippi River on October 13 was flying low prior to striking power wires.

The plane crash killed 47 year old Chad Rygwall, whom investigators believe was the pilot, and his wife 48 year old Jill Marie Rygwall.

The report reveals that ground-based video shows that the plane was flying at a low altitude over the river approximately 200 yards from the crash site........

Search Area For Missing Boater Expanded........

The search area for a missing Quincy area boater has been expanded.  19 year old Ean Reinhold disappeared on October 14 after a boat carrying three people and a dog capsized on the Mississippi River, close to Lock and Dam No.21 at Quincy.

According to Glenn Sanders with the Quincy Area Volunteer Emergency Corps, the crews will be searching the Mississippi River from Hannibal, Missouri north.

Reportedly, Reinhold and two others were in a 16 foot jon boat, when a wave struck the boat, sinking it.  Deckhands with Canton Marine Towing were able to save two people from the river, but Reinhold disappeared from sight.  He was not wearing a life jacket........

Missouri River Relief Cleaned Up The River........

On Saturday, Missouri River Relief, a community volunteer organization, held a large-scale clean up of the Missouri River.  Better than 250 volunteers turned out to clean up trash from a 120 mile stretch of the Missouri River, as well as portions of the smaller Lamine River.

This year's clean up marked the first time that organizers transported clean up crews by canoes in addition to motorboats.  Jenn Davis, the event organizer stated that they used the canoes to access smaller creeks and streams.

Davis added that many of the places that trash collects are places that motorboats can't get to because those bodies of water are more shallow, or they're just harder to reach........

For many years, preservationists have toiled in an effort to preserve the historic showboat after it shut down in 2001, after spending decades along the St. Louis and St. Charles riverfronts.

The Goldenrod was determined to be too far gone to restore in 2015, so preservationists removed many items from the vessel's interior, including chandeliers, stained glass windows and tin walls.  This past May, the vessel was flooded with up to eight feet of Illinois River water........

Fall Color Outlook

RiverBend Forecast:  Late Season For Fall Colors........

Thanks to the warm and dry conditions that have been in the Riverbend during the late summer months and into the fall, the fall color season is running late.

There are some trees that have begun turning colors and dropping their leaves, however, other trees are still green and have yet to show any signs of turning.

Brett Stawar, President of the Alton Regional Convention and Visitor's Bureau says that this has made forecasting when the peak colors will be a bit of a challenge........

Boating Safety

A Short Checklist For Safe Refueling........

Many boaters don't give much thought to refueling, their boats; it's just second nature.  Just another task amongst many prior to hitting the water.  Load up the coolers, load up chairs, fill up the boat and go.

That type of complacency when fueling up the boat can lead to disaster.  Over the summer, there were two boat explosions at the Lake of the Ozarks after refueling.  This has sparked discussions about what boaters need to be doing at the gas docks.  Author Scott "Sky" Smith has come up with a boat refueling checklist:

○  Secure the boat to the gas dock

○  Shut the engines off

○  Have all passengers disembark the boat.

○  Make sure the fire extinguisher is accessible and operational

○  Extinguish all open flames, including cigarettes, and verify the BBQ grill on the rail is cold.

○  Refrain from using electrical devices when fueling.  Shut down the stereo and other electrical devices.

○  Determine the proper fuel for the vessel and make sure to use it.

○  Make sure you are filling the fuel tank, and not the freshwater tank, holding tank or a rod holder.

○  Add fuel slowly, and don't overfill the tank.

○  If the vessel is equipped with a blower, use it for at least four minutes.  Open the engine compartment to release any fumes.

○  Use the sniff test to determine if fumes are present.

○  DO NOT start the engines until the fumes are gone.

River History....

October 23, 2013 in River History

A towboat pushing two barges collided with a johnboat on the Missouri River near the Lewis Bridge, which carries US Route 67 across the river. The collision was reported to the St. Charles County Sheriff's Department about 9:30 am. The johnboat operator apparently tried to cross the river in the path of the tow, despite numerous blasts of the tow's horn. The johnboat capsized, and went under the barge. Crew members from the tow, and workers from the St. Louis Bridge Company recovered the man and performed CPR until paramedics arrived........

Responders from multiple agencies began the considerable dive operation at 9 am Saturday morning.  Throughout the week. officials have been concerned about dangerous conditions along the river, so they waited until they had the proper resources annd the safest plan in place.

The vehicle was located hundreds of feet downstream from where it went into the river.  A single diver fought a strong current in zero visibility to locate and attach a winch to the car.  A tow truck dragged the car 40 feet to shore........
