Volunteers Clean Up The STL Riverfront........

The National Park Service was celebrating their annual National Public Lands Day on Saturday, and the Gateway Arch celebrated with the Great MonArch Migration event, a clean-up of the Riverfront and a free concert by the USAF Band.

Early Saturday, volunteers turned out to join in on the NPS' riverbank litter clean-up.  Erin Hilligoss-Volkmann with the National Park Service says that keeping trash out of the river is important, as it heads downstream and ends up in the Gulf of Mexco.

There were dozens of volunteers loading bags with trash, and many of them did not realize how neglected the rivers were.  The group dug up tires, water bottles, plastic, cans, wood and other debris during the Riverfront clean-up........

Lewis, Clark And Camp River Dubois........

In December 1803, Captain Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led a group of young men to the Riverbend region to establish a winter camp.  The site was not where the Corps of Discovery planned to winter, but ended up being a destination forced by circumstance.

Lewis and Clark had planned to winter on the western bank of the Mississippi River near the mouth of the Missouri River in what was then the Louisiana Territory.  The French claimed the land, the Spanish governed it, but the land was soon to be transferred to the United States.

The U.S. and France had already agreed to the Louisiana Purchase, however, Carlos Dehault Delassus, the Spanish commander in St. Louis, had not been formally notified by the Spanish government of the transfer.  Therefore, he would not allow the Corps of Discovery to establish a camp west of the Mississippi River.

Lewis and Clark honored the decision of the Spanish commander, and set up camp east of the Mississippi River, where the Missouri River empties into it.  The exact site of the Corps of Discovery's camp is not known, but it is likely under water.  In 1803, the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers' confluence was around 5 miles north of where it is now.  Over the past 200 years, the Mississippi River has meandered east, and the Missouri River has moved south........

Upper Mississippi River

At One Time, People Could Walk Across The River........

It is said that in the early 1900's wading across the Upper Mississippi River was quite common, due to the low water levels.  River traffic was also stopped, fish died in stagnant water, and dead vegetation often caught fire.

Prior to the lock and dam system being constructed, the riverbed and bedrock in the Quad Cities region was exposed, and the river levels were rarely at a convenient level, either flooding or shoaling.

In 1864, the Upper Mississippi River essentially went out of business, with the lowest water levels ever recorded.  Passengers heading for St. Paul made it to Dubuque, where they had to transfer to a shallow draft steamer that went as far upstream as LaCrosse.  Just two years later, the whole region flooded........

Mayor Dedicates Week To Columbus Ships.... Captain Re-Dedicated It To His Father....

Cape Girardeau Mayor Harry Rediger dedicated the upcoming week to the visiting Christopher Columbus replica ships, the Nina and Pinta, however, Captain Stephen Sanger re-dedicated it to the man that made the replicas possible, his father who passed away Thursday.

Sanger explained that since he was 5 years old, Captain Morgan Sanger loved all things nautical.  He added that his father admired the Portugese caravels that Columbus and other explorers used throughout the age of exploration.  Captain Sanger called the Portugese caravel the space shuttle of the 15th century.

In 1986, the elder Captain Sanger began constructing working models of the Columbus ships.  At first, funding considerations only allowed for one vessel to be commissioned, so he chose the Nina, as it was Columbus' favorite.  A group of Brazilian shipwrights constructed the Nina using period accurate shipbuilding techniques.  Three years later, the Nina  was completed........

Log Jam Halted A River Cruise........

Last weekend, a riverboat on a cruise along the Ohio River made an unexpected stop.  The Queen of the Mississippi was stuck in Olmstead, Illinois for about a day's time due to a log stuck in the nearby lock and dam.

The Queen of the Mississippi was on a week-long journey from St. Louis to Nashville, via the Ohio River, when it got stopped by a literal log jam Sunday night at Lock 53 of the Olmsted Locks and Dam.

The 138 passengers were bussed from the boat to Paducah, where they were scheduled to visit prior to the delay.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was able to get the log jam cleared, and got the Queen of the Mississippi on her way........

Mississippi River At Memphis, Tennessee

The Mississippi River Is Low In Memphis........

On Thursday morning, the Mississippi River was measuring -3.6 feet at downtown Memphis, Tennessee.  Now, even though the river stage is reading negative, there is still plenty of water in the river.

The Mississippi River gauge in the Mid-South is a source of confusion.  The system was originally set up at various locations along the Mississippi River during the early 1900s.  It was developed by river workers as opposed to hydrologists.

The zero reading on the river gauge is a different water level at different locations along the river.  Each gauge station established their own zero level at the lowest point that anyone could remember........

Lock Repairs, Low Water Causing Shipping Issues........

Even as farmers across the nation are harvesting their bumper crop of corn and soybeans, low levels along the rivers and back-ups at aging locks are causing problems with export bound grain barge shipping along the Mississippi River system.

On Friday, barge freight shipping rates rose to a three year high as a crucial portion of the Mississippi River dropped to near-record low levels, and low water and emergency repairs to a 90 year old Ohio River lock delayed several tows.

As a result, exporters are scrambling to meet shipping commitments out of the Gulf Coast, even as bulk cargo ships are backing up, waiting to load soybeans........

The Picture of YesterYear's on this Day in 2016...... were sent to us by Capt'n Glenn Sadowski

Hi RiverBill,

I just wanted to share a few photos from Sunday's Cruise aboard the HMS Destiny.
It was a beautiful day as we departed from Alton Marina. Our first stop was at My River Home Marina where we were met by gracious hosts. We spent some time enjoying drinks, snacks, and great music at the La Rosa Bar while other guests enjoyed visiting the Longshot Saloon.

From there, we headed to Grafton and docked at the Grafton Marina for a nice evening at the Grafton Oyster Bar.

Once back underway, we had a really nice evening cruise, returning to Alton.

Thanks again to Henry for a wonderful day......

See you on the river,
Capt. Glenn Sadowski

Pacific Looking To Work With Flood Mitigation Consultant........

Officials in Pacific, Missouri are saying that they are ready to start working with a flood mitigation consultant to help the city prepare for future flooding.

Pacific officials believe that flood experts can help protect portions of the city form rising water, and assist with obtaining outside funding for flood mitigation projects.

Out of 11 consulting applicants, operations committee members narrowed their choice down to H.R. Green.  During the next meeting of the full board of aldermen, they will be asked to approve the selection, and grant the city administrator permission to negotiate a contract for work........

Study:  Additional River Sediment Will Cause Issues For Shrimpers........

A new report indicates that shrimpers may be hit hard by two sediment diversions planned for the Lower Mississippi River in Louisiana.

It is believed that once the diversions start flowing fresh water and sediment into Barataria Bay and Breton Sound, the sediment will likely change the abundance, distribution and types of shrimp in places that shrimpers have fished for decades.

For the better part of the century, the levee system along the Mississippi River has limited the flow of sediment into the river delta, contributing to the loss of land.  The sediment diversions are a relatively new, and untested method of restoring land........

Paddling Safety

Life Jackets, Buddy System Key To Kayaking Safety........

According to experienced kayaker, Mark Frankenbach, following the buddy system and wearing a life jacket are the best ways to stay safe while kayaking.

Frankenbach notes that on larger bodies of water, such as the Mississippi River or the Great Lakes, a paddler that get separated from his kayak may not be able to return to it.

Kayaking has seen a surge in popularity over the past few years, and as a result, some paddlers don't take proper precautions, such as wearing life jackets........

New Business Lifting Off........

Starting this fall, people visiting Grafton will be able to get a bird's eye view of the changing colors by taking a helicopter ride with Prairie State Helicopters.

Wednesday morning, Grafton Mayo Rick Eberlin signed the business license which allows Prairie State Helicopters to offer helicopter rides to Grafton visitors at the Hawg Pit.  The helicopter rides will be offered throughout the winter.

Corps Fighting Low River Levels........

The Mid-Mississippi River Valley region is nearing drought conditions, which means that the river levels are low during the barge industry's busiest time of the year.

While barges are being loaded up with the fall harvest, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is laboring to maintain the 9 foot deep, 300 foot wide channel that barge traffic require.

In the St. Louis region, one of the Corp's largest dredges is operating.  Corps spokeswoman Amanda Kruse says that crews are also working on removing rocks at Thebes, Illinois.  She adds that low water conditions actually aid in the effort........

Removing Rocks From The River Helps Keep Cargo Moving........

This week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is using some heavy equipment to break up rock in a section of the Mississippi River at Thebes, Illinois, near Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

While the Corps is responsible for maintaining a 9 foot deep, 300 foot wide channel, they like to provide barge pilots a bit of extra room where the river bends.

Crews will be removing rock as long as the river levels remain low enough that they can get heavy equipment out onto the river.  This project will not shut down river traffic along the Mississippi River........

Fishy Tales From Tampico, Mexico

Light Rain Shower Accompanied By Small Fish........

Mexican officials are saying that on Tuesday, a light rain shower fell on the northeastern Mexico coastal city of Tampico also dropped fish on the ground.

The civil defense agency for the state of Tamaulipas posted photos to the agency's Facebook page which show four small fish in a bag, and one more on the ground.

The U.S. Library of Congress reports that this phenomenon is not uncommon, as it has been reported since ancient times.  It is thought that waterspouts, or tornadoes over water, likely suck fish into the air, where they are blown around until being allowed to fall to the ground........

The Picture of YesterYear's in 2016.... was sent to us by Jessica Mckay who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis

RiverBill:

Hello! I hope all is well with you! Bobby and I just got back from a trip to Costa Rica. While there, we went out on a boat ride and it was a great experience!

Getting onto the boat was a challenge in itself! The boat backed up to the beach and we had to time the waves just right to be able to hop on.

Once we were on the boat, Captain Walter took us for a ride around the Gulf of Papaygo , where the scenery is beautiful. We stopped at a "honeymoon island" for a swim, saw and heard 3 hump back whales, and laughed at a group of 6 dolphins that were "playing" with the boat. I forgot to bring a sticker on the boat, but luckily Bobby was wearing a Blessing of the Fleet shirt with your logo on the back!

Let's make the most of these last few weekends on the river!

Helicopter Rides Available In The City........

Even though helicopter rides have been offered by Prairie State Helicopter for the past few weeks, the company has been doing so without a business license.

Instead of sanctioning or fining Prairie State Helicopter, Grafton Mayor Rick Eberlin simply asked the company to apply for the business license.

Eberlin stated that there have been other helicopter ride businesses that have tried to come to Grafton, but the previous City Council would not allow it.  The rides were reportedly set up at the request of the Hawg Pit barbeque restaurant........

Vandals Damaged, Stole Navigation Lights On 2 Bridges........

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet recently announced that they were searching for vandals that damaged and stole navigation lights on two bridges over the Ohio River in the Paducah area.

The McCracken County Sheriff's investigated reports of damage to navigation lights on the U.S. 45 Ohio River "Brookport" Bridge over the Labor Day Weekend.

Considerable damage to the solar panels powering the necessary navigation lights required reporting the incident to the U.S. Coast Guard, who would alert commercial tow boat operators that some navigation lights were inoperative........

Bass Pro Wraps Up Cabela's Acquisition........

Monday, officials announced that the roughly $4 billion acquisition of rival outdoor retailer, Cabela's, has been completed, however, the announcement did not address the future of approximately 2,000 Cabela's jobs in Sidney, Nebraska.

While Bass Pro anticipates leaving some operations in Sidney, they acknowledge that redundant headquarters jobs will most likely be consolidated Bass Pro's headquarters in Springfield, Missouri.

Both of these companies had humble beginnings, as Dick Cabela started selling fishing lures through the mail by way of his kitchen table in 1961.  In 1971, Bass Pro founder Johnny Morris started out by selling top quality fishing tackle in his father's liquor store.  Morris gained a following, and started printing the Bass Pro catalog in 1974.  By 1978, Morris introduced the Bass Tracker fishing boat designed specifically for anglers........

Riverlands Hosts Inaugural Pelican Days Festival........

Saturday, The Audubon Center at Riverlands hosted the first ever Pelican Days Festival, where visitors celebrated and discovered one of North America's largest birds, the American White Pelican.

The non-endangered American White Pelican can weigh up to 18 pounds, and posses a wingspan that can reach nine feet.  The birds are fish eaters; their mouths can open wide, and can hold up to three gallons of water.

Roger Holloway with the World Bird Sanctuary said that the White Pelicans nest in freshwater lakes in the northwest and Canada, and migrate south along the Mississippi and Missouri River flyways.  If the winters are not too severe, the pelicans may stay in the Riverbend region year-round........

Search On For Possible Person In The River.........

On Saturday, the U.S. Coast Guard was searching for a possible person in the Upper Mississippi River near Mile Marker 183.2 at St. Louis, Missouri.

The Motor Vessel Ms. Shelia advised the Coast Guard that they had spotted a 20 foot red aluminum canoe unmanned and adrift near the Merchant's Bridge.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department dispatched a helicopter, and the Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River launched a 25 foot Response Boat - Small crew to search for signs of distress........

Responders Rescue  Man From The River........

Wednesday afternoon, a frantic search for a man in the Missouri River south of St. Joseph, Missouri ended well when he was safely pulled from the water.

Shortly before 1:30 pm, a boater alerted authorities after spotting a man struggling in the river.  Reportedly, the man advised the boater that he was O.K..

When responders arrived, they found the man crying for help in the river.  The St. Joseph Fire Department launched their boat, and about ten minutes later, the man was safely ashore, and on the way to the hospital with minor injuries........

Illinois Barge Shipping News

Barge Traffic Disrupted By Low Water Conditions........

On September 17, low water conditions along the Illinois River closed a portion of the river near La Grange Lock and Dam at Beadstown, IL.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is scheduled to begin dredging.  There is no completion at this time.

Through September 21, there were traffic delays along the Ohio River at Locks and Dam 52 and 53 also because of repair projects and low water conditions.  Lock 52 is about 1.5 miles downstream of Brookport, IL. Lock and Dam 53 is at Grand Chain, IL.

These issues caused long waiting times for barges transiting the locks.  Low water conditions typically lowers the carrying capacity of barges, causing freight rates to rise........

Crews Working To Bolster Wood River Lower Levee........

Currently, crews are working on another phase of the project intended to secure the Wood River Levee from sand boil damage.  The work involves relocating utilities from the bike trail area near the former Dynegy plant.

Amanda Kruse, the public affairs chief for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District says that the utility relocations are necessary for a future federal project for the Lower Wood River Levee System.

The future project involves the installation of slurry walls under the levee which will prevent underseepage during times of high water.  The project is still in the planning phases, as the Corps has yet to award a contract........

Mississippi River At Minneapolis, Minnesota

How Many Waterfalls Are There Along The Mississippi River?

The Mississippi River only has one natural waterfall, and that is the St. Anthony Falls, located on the Upper Mississippi River in the heart of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The St. Anthony Falls was instrumental in the growth of Minneapolis.  Since canoes were not able to easily travel upstream, they had to be portaged around the waterfall.  This made the location a logical place to rest and trade with the Native Americans.

In 1869, the natural waterfall collapsed, and a concrete overflow was constructed in it's place.  During the 1960s, locks and dams were added to the waterfall........

The Lewis and Clark expedition ended on the St. Louis riverfront after a journey along the Missouri River to it's headwaters, a passage over the Rocky Mountains and a descent to the Pacific Coast via the Columbia River. Returning by roughly the same route, they arrived in St. Louis after two years, four months and nine days of exploring the lands an encountering the people of the American West.

Crews Making Repairs To Brainerd's Hydro Dam........

This week, crews have been busy reinforcing the hydro dam on the Mississippi River at the former Potlatch site in northeastern Brainerd, Minnesota.

Scott Magnuson, the Brainerd Public Utilities superintendant reports that the project involves the installation of an 11 inch concrete overlay across the entire apron and the tainter gate spillway, and the installation of a new training wall between the two large bascule gates and the tainter gate.

Magnuson added that the project should be mostly completed by early November........

The Brainerd Dam along the Mississippi River was originally built in 1888 by the Crow Wing Boom Company, who sorted and classified logs floated down the river to the local sawmills.  In 1898, the Northwest Paper Company bought the dam and water rights for a future mill.  By 1903, they began operating a grinder plant which converted logs into wood fiber which was sent to a paper mill.  In 1915, construction began on a full process paper mill, and as part of the project, the dam was rebuilt and raised from 16 feet to 20 feet........

Green Dye Spilled Into The Mississippi River........

Officials in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana are saying that the green liquid that spilled into the Mississippi River near Chalmette, Louisiana is harmless.

John Rahaim, the Parish Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, stated that the green liquid is in fact a non-toxic dye that was used on one of the Chalmette Refinery's new storage tanks to check for leaks.

Rahaim said that the refinery had advised the parish that they would be using the dye, and it had been approved by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality........

Mississippi River Studies

LSU's Mississippi River Model Nearing Completion........

Workers are putting the finishing touches on a model of the Lower Mississippi River, which is part of the Louisiana State University's Center for River Studies at The Water Campus.

When completed, researchers will be able to run water with a silt-like substance through the model, and by adjusting water flow and opening various flood gates and diversion canals, they can determine how and where sediment will be deposited.

Project manager Rudy Simoneaux says that computer modeling works for looking at particular projects in a narrow area, but when officials want to see how a particular diversion affects the entire system, running water through the physical model is the way to go........

Stacy Dohogne Lane, with the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau said that due to "overwhelming" public interest, the Pinta  and Nina replica ships will be extending their visit to the Cape Girardeau riverfront.

The vessels, modeled on the original Christopher Columbus ships that made the journey to the New World, were originally slated to stay in Cape Girardeau from September 29th through October 1st.

These nautical museums will be docked on the Riverfront Park through October 8th, which will add six full days of tours.  Lane says that the public is invited to the riverfront to talk self guided tours of the vessels........

Abraham Lincoln and James Shields, then State Auditor of Illinois, rowed out to an island in the Mississippi River across from Alton, IL. to duel with broadswords.

The duel was over Lincoln's severe criticism of Shields' proclamation that ordered tax collectors at that time to accept only gold and silver for payment of taxes and school debts. .

While the parties set up the dueling area, the principal seconds tried to resolve the issue peacefully. To demonstrate his obvious physical advantage, Lincoln then reached up and lopped off a high willow branch. After discussion the two seconds finally agreed that a note in which Lincoln admitted authorship of the letter and asserted that he "had no intention of injuring your (Shields) personal or private character or standing as a man or gentleman" would satisfy the honor of both them.

The duel never took place.

Today the Lincoln Shields Recreation Area is located on the Mississippi River in West Alton, Mo directly across the Mississippi River Alton, IL

Congressional Effort Looks To Change FEMA Aid Formula........

A legislator from Illinois is heading up an effort to change the formula that the Federal Emergency Management Agency uses to determine who receives assistance in order to make it more fair.

U.S. Representative Rodney Davis added a measure to a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security.  This bill passed through the House last week.

Davis said that FEMA's current formula is based off of a state's population, which is not fair for rural Illinois.  Illinois carries an $18 million threshold before federal assistance is available........
