Restored Pumpkin Seed Boat On Display At Grafton Visitor Center........

Three point hydroplanes, more commonly known as pumpkin seed boats, were at one time found ripping along the river.  These boats were about eight feet long, and could run upwards of 60 miles per hour with the driver on his knees.

Grafton residents Tom and Lou Lenkman discovered a vintage pumpkin seed boat amongst the debris along a dock near their St. Charles home during the flood of 1993.  The boat spent the next 14 years hanging from rafters.

Fast forward to October 2007, when Lenkman and the members of the Mississippi Valley Chapter of the Antique Classic Boat Society started working to restore the boat.  Now, the fully restored pumpkin seed boat is on display at the Grafton Visitor Center........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Trooper Sentenced In Drowning Death Of Handcuffed Man........

Better than three years after a handcuffed man fell out of a Missouri State Highway Patrol boat and drowned in the Lake of the Ozarks, the trooper driving the boat was sentenced to 10 days in jail, and two years of probation.

Trooper Anthony Piercy will be serving "shock time" in the Morgan County jail for the death of 20 year old Brandon Ellingson.  Ellingson had been pulled over for suspicion of boating while intoxicated.

Piercy had handcuffed Ellingson's hands behind his back, and then he placed a bucked life vest over his head.   The life jacket was the incorrect type for a handcuffed man.  When the boat struck a wave, Ellingson was tossed overboard, and the improperly secured life jacket came off........

Anchor Stolen Saturday Afternoon / Evening  (9-16-17)

Hello,

I've seen some articles about items found or taken from time to time.

My anchor was stolen from Island 521 Saturday afternoon/evening.

I left the slough side of 521 Saturday at 230 to pick friends up at my marina. We had set tents up and we're spending the night. I returned a few hours later to find my anchor was missing.

Anyone that might have taken it thinking it was left behind and willing to return I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

The drills will include a wide range of patrol boat tactics as well as emergency response procedures and are intended to enhance safety and security for law enforcement and fire and rescue personnel who may be called upon to respond to a maritime security incident.

The river will remain open to vessel traffic during these drills, and the public should not be concerned about the increased presence of law enforcement and other emergency vessels.

The drills are scheduled to be conducted Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. to noon from the vicinity of Six Mile Island to mile marker 600 on the Ohio River and Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to noon between Six Mile Island and Twelve Mile Island.

Corps Hosting Open House At Lock And Dam No.10........

On Saturday, September 23, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be hosting an open house at Lock and Dam No.10 at Guttenberg, Iowa, in conjunction with the town's GermanFest.

The Corps is inviting the public in from 11 am to 3 pm in order to demonstrate how the lock works and supports navigation along the inland waterways.

Lock and Dam No.10 is one of the 13 locks along the Mississippi River managed by the Corps' St. Paul District.  There are 29 locks in total along the Mississippi River, from Minneapolis to St. Louis, and work as a stairway for towboats shipping commodities up and down the river........

Boat Sales

Brokerage Sales Fell During July........

During July 2017, the number of boats sold through brokerages decreased by 12 percent, when compared to July 2016.  The main cause was cited as lower sales of boats under 26 feet, and a small decrease in sales of boats 26 - 35 feet.

Sales of boats under 26 feet were down 14 percent in July at 896, compared to July 2016.  Year to date sales in this segment were down by 6 percent to 5,507 boats sold.  The 26 - 35 foot segment was down 3 percent for the year, with 6,800 boats sold.

The average prices that the boats in the small boat categories are selling for were significantly higher during July, and year to date.  For example, the average "sold for" price of boats under 26 feet rose by 10 percent, from nearly $25,789 to $28,329.........

Missouri River Reading

"Growing Up With The River" Looks At Key Moments in Missouri History....

Authors Dan and Connie Burkhardt were recently discussing their latest book, Growing Up With The River on an episode of Thinking Out Loud with Darren Hellwege, prior to their lecture on the MU campus on Tuesday.

While Growing Up With The River is aimed at a younger audience, the book discusses the history of the author's families via descriptions of a series of towns along the Missouri River.

Connie Burkhardt says that the book is intended to educate the next generation of conservationists.  She adds that the book can be a great introduction to the curious reader interested in learning more about the geography and history of the Missouri River region........

Thanks,
Jeff

Driftwood Art Among The Most Popular At Mississippi Earthtones Festival........

The work of local artist Michael Snider was easily the most popular amongst the work of 83 other exhibitors during Saturday's Mississippi Earthtones Festival in Alton.

The primary medium used in Snider's work is driftwood that he collects along the Mississippi River.  Snider's pieces literally towered over the 11th annual event, and utilized other items he found and acquired for free.

Snider says that he doesn't really care if he sells anything or not, he enjoys making things he finds interesting.  He added that he is quite lucky in that he gets to go out, collect free driftwood, and turn it into odd stuff he can sell........

Hi Bill,

Little John checking in. The first time here in Evansville, IL after many years.  We started out with 46 boats and out of 16 or 18 boats in our class we are in the top five ! Things looking wonderful !

The owners and host of the marina, bar and this event came by and say hi ! We would really like to come back here again and see this race continue for the coming years..  Reasonable prices and free admission.

On Sunday we will still have "free admission." Same routine as today, very pleasant atmosphere, small town crowd and personality. Come on over and watch us race.

We went to the meat market today. It's been there for 49 years at 6 months. A real neat town to visit.

Thank you

LJ

Classic Boat Show Held In Quincy On Saturday........

On Saturday, the Quincy Boat Club hosted their 17th annual Classic Boat Show along the Quincy riverfront.  There were more than 60 boats, models and materials on display.

The Classic Boat Show is held to remind Quincy of the rich history along the Mississippi River.  For some attendees, however, the show serves to remind them of a simpler time.

Classic Boat Show co-founder Todd Young remembers being a kid and riding in an old wooden inboard boat owned by a family friend.  He noted that the sound of the motor and being on the water was such a cool experience........

Sixth Annual Quincy 5 Miler Race Was Saturday........

While rowing along the Mississippi River in Quincy, Illinois goes back to at least 1872, man was once again pitted against the river during Saturday's sixth annual Quincy 5 Miler.

The race sent competitors from the public boat launch at Canton Chute, downstream past the south end of Hogback Island, along the Illinois bank of the Mississippi Rive, through "The Cut" to Quincy Bay, past Quincy's riverfront, to the finish line at South Side Boat Club.

Bob Westrum took the top honors by finishing first as the fastest single boat with a time of 50 minutes and 29 seconds.  On Sunday, there will be a 15 mile race departing from the Bear Creek Landing area........

Man Taking Stand Up Paddleboard Trip Down The River........

Stand up paddleboarder Daniel Lee says that he always wanted to paddle the Mississippi River, and that he fell in love with stand up paddleboarding just last year.

Now, Lee is making an attempt to paddle 50 miles per day down the Mississippi River while standing up.  Lee says that people he meets along the way ask if he is crazy.  He quipped that he apparently is crazy for wanting to stand for 2,300 miles.

There is another reason that Lee has undertaken this journey.  He is raising funds for the American Camp Association, an organization that provides scholarships for kids that can't afford to attend a summer camp........

River Mayor Group Consider Wetlands, Parks For Flood Control........

There are a variety of projects that the mayors of cities along the Mississippi River are considering to combat flooding, including restoring wetlands in Illinois, constructing a water retention lake in Arkansas, and building a riverfront park north of St. Louis that is designed to flood when the Mississippi River rises out of it's banks.

The Mississippi River mayors are hopeful that these projects will bring in private investment on the heels of a new partnership with a global environmental data group.  The agreement was made during the annual meeting of the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative.

According to St. Paul Mayor, and co-chair of the group, Chris Coleman, several natural disasters have occurred since 2005, and have caused about $200 billion in damages within the Mississippi River Valley.  The group intends to mitigate the flooding risks by fixing the river's own defenses, such as wetlands and floodplains........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Busy Lake Season Capped Off With Safe Weekends........

Two of the busiest weekends on the Lake of the Ozarks mark the end of the summer boating season, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol notes that during that time, there were no major collisions or serious injuries.

The Patrol reports that the most serious boating incident was an engine compartment explosion that occurred after a boat fueled up at Kelly's Port Marina.

The Patrol also notes that there were no significant collisions, but there were several minor bumps for a few boaters that were having trouble docking........

Hey RiverBill

We took a cruise on the USS JDingo for a little birthday celebration. Here is the man of the hour with his 3 nieces on our way up Illinois River for a birthday lunch at Mel's Riverdock Restaurant. We had some great weather, great food, and even capped it off with a peach banger at Kinder's. Overall a great day on the river.

Here's to hoping for a few more months of good weather on the river,

U.S. Fish And Wildlife Service

Report:  101 Million Americans Participated IN Wildlife Activities During 2016........

The U.S. Department of the Interior announced that a new report released by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service revealed that 101.6 million people, some 40% of the U.S. population, 16 years old or older, participated in wildlife-related activities during 2016.

The study revealed increases in fishing and wildlife watching, especially around the home, but slight decreases in the number of hunters across the nation.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association says that the study reflects continued interest in engaging the outdoors.  Reportedly, more Americans went fishing, with an 8% increase in fishing participation since 2011, rising from 33.1 million anglers to 35.8 million during 2016........

Towing Tongue Weight

click pic to enlarge

The Picture of the Day...

I was walking through the parking lot a local mall and spotted a different looking trailer hitch on the back of pick up truck.  I think the bright metal first caught my eye.  The hitch had a lot of up and down adjustment to it and a small built in weight scale.

Hmmm....Pretty interesting !

We have all experienced towing problems when we have had to much tongue weight or not enough tongue weight.  This product looks help keep those situations in check.

I found the company's website on the internet and thought I would share with everyone.  Check it Out !

Towing Peace of Mind TM

"Weigh Safe trailer hitches are the only hitches on the planet with a built-in scale to measure tongue weight to improve towing performance."

On the hook Saturday evening and watched a couple of kayakers setup camp for the night on the island. On Sunday, the two gentlemen stopped at our boat and told us about their " charity trip," length of the Mississippi, for Keycenters.org.
