Fed Help Needed For Flood Protection........

The United States Geological Survey recently completed research showing the Mississippi River Valley has seen an increase in the frequency, amount, intensity and volume of rainfall

Back in 2008, the Mississippi River Commission completed a study that had recommended making major improvements to flood protection levels.  Congress never acted on those recommendations, and the policies of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have remained static.

There are several options for mitigating future flooding, including establishing additional water storage spaces, however, before any plans can move forward, federal authorization will be required........

Native Americans Walking To Keep The Missouri River Clean........

St. Louis is a long way from Montana, but that isn't stopping a group of Native Americans from walking the length of the Missouri River.

The group is taking the long walk to raise awareness about the Missouri River's health.  Once they pass Sioux City, they plan on traveling down the river with a floating lodge.

All along their trip, the group will be making stops to discuss their concerns about agricultural runoff and fossil fuels in the Missouri River........

A Look Back At The Shanty Houseboats Of Old........

By definition, a shantyboat is a small, crude houseboat.  They are literally small houses set on and fastened to some type of  floating vessel.

There is a forgotten history of people living in the homemade shantyboats in America, who did so primarily due to their low cost, the ability to move about,

Between the 1890s and the post-Depression era, migrant workers lived aboard shantyboats with their families along the rivers and canals of industrialized metro areas.  When jobs dried up, they would slip their moorings and head elsewhere to look for work........

Mississippi River Journeys

Combat Veterans Paddling The Mississippi River........

Three female combat veterans are currently making their way down the Mississippi River.  They began their trip in Minnesota, where the river is mere inches deep, and intend to finish in Louisiana within three months.

St. Louis native Annie Ferguson. a member of the Navy Reserve, Missouri native and aircraft maintenance worker Dana Phillips and Air Force aerial combat broadcaster Michelle Revoir are making the journey to deal with their experiences while deployed, as well as dealing with coming home from being deployed.

The non-profit 'Warrior Expeditions' has provided the team with the gear and canoes necessary for their trip, but Ferguson also credits the random people they meet along their journey for keeping them going.  They call those people River Angels........

Group Rebuilds Non-Motorized Boat Ramp....  Again....

About a month ago, the Union Sportsmen's Alliance, Missouri American Water and Utility Workers Union of America Local 335 volunteers wrapped up the construction of a non-motorized boat ramp at Minnie Ha Ha Park in Sunset Hills.

This was the second time the group built the ramp.  The ramp was less than a week old when severe flooding destroyed the freshly poured concrete back in May.

USA CEO and Executive Director Scott Vance noted that floodwaters severely damaged close to $12,000 in volunteer labor and materials.  American Water pledged $15,000 in grant funding to repair the ramp, and they believe they have come up with a design that will withstand Meramec River floodwaters........

Responders and Johnson's family have been searching for him, and intend to keep searching until he is found.  Johnson's family wishes to thank those in the Grafton region who have allowed them to use their boats for the search efforts........

Hurricane Irma Forces Tampa Boat Show To Reschedule........

The Progressive Tampa Boat Show was originally scheduled for this weekend, however, with the threat of Hurricane Irma looming, the show has been rescheduled for October 13 - 15, 2017.

The call was made once the National Hurricane Center verified that Irma is now a Category 5 hurricane, and the weather models put South Florida in the storm's projected path.

At the end of August, wooden docks had been installed at the convention center boat docks in anticipation of the show.  Those docks will be removed by the end of this week, and reinstalled for the October show........

Lake Of The Ozarks

The 1960s....  The Lake Comes Into It's Own....

Amid the turmoil and changes within America during the 1960s, the Lake of the Ozarks came into it's own as the playground of the Midwest.  Reportedly, the Lake, and the entertainment along the Bagnell Dam Strip drew in over 100,000 visitors per year.

Tours of the hydroelectric power plant within the Bagnell Dam averaged 50,000 visitors annually, and along with Lake of the Ozarks State Park, was one of the major draws of the region.

In addition to the unique entertainment options available at the Lake, lakefront living started to evolve, shifting from resorts that families return to year after year, more toward people purchasing their own homes along the shoreline........

Boater Still Believed To Be Missing........

On Tuesday, responders were still searching for a man that disappeared on Monday whole boating along the Mississippi River, just downstream from Grafton, Illinois.

Chief Eric Spanton of the Grafton Police Department reports that the incident occurred on the Missouri side of the river, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol has jurisdiction over the search efforts.

Reportedly, the unidentified man was maneuvering a small boat when it became stuck on a sandbar.  The man waded into the river to free the boat, slipped below the water's surface, and hasn't been seen since........

Lock Repairs Were Made Ahead Of Schedule........

Last week, crews were able to quickly repair a cracked gate on the main lock at the Melvin Price Lock and Dam No.26 sooner than anticipated, which allowed backed-up barge traffic to get moving once again.

Amanda Kruse, public affairs chief for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District says that they had everything in place, some luck, and were able to make repairs ahead of schedule.

Just before 6 pm Friday night, crews started removing unnecessary equipment from the site, and by 7 pm on Friday, the lock was able to reopen.  Kruse said they were hoping to have the lock reopened by Saturday night........

IDNR, Anglers Working To Keep Carp Out Of Great Lakes........

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources have partnered up with commercial anglers to cull Asian carp from the state's waterways.  When this season's culling efforts are wrapped up, approximately 1 million pounds of carp will have been removed.

Dan Stephenson, chief of fisheries for the IDNR says that the carp problem is a state-wide problem, but they are primarily concerned with the fish reaching the Great Lakes.

Stephenson added that they have been working hard to cull the carp, especially near the leading edge, and they have been removing about 1 million pounds of carp each year.  He says the main task is keeping them out of Lake Michigan........

Hi Bill and all you RiverBill followers,

Linda and I are here in Gulf Shores Alabama spending a few days on our sailboat, Mardi Gras

Let me introduce you to Dale from Indianapolis who just purchased this 1960 22 foot Shock with its trailer for $100.00. What a barn find! He just launched her and is checking out all the rigging and sails. However he may be putting her back on the trailer again as we are all very nervous about Hurricane Irma. Everyone is watching the hurricane websites and wishing the darned thing would turn north instead of the direction she is headed. Unlike Dale, I don't have a trailer for Mardi Gras.

Search On For Missing Man In The River........

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that shortly after 6 pm Monday, a call went out for a possible drowning along the Mississippi River.

Reportedly, a male boater was viewed pushing a boat from a sandbar in the river and falling into the river.  The man did not resurface, and responders were called out.

Heavy rains and storms moving through the region have hampered responders, however, crews were planning to search along the Mississippi River bank near the islands along the St. Charles side of the river........

Late Sunday, between 10 and 20 barrels of high-sulphur fuel oil was spilled into the Mississippi River near Mile Marker 80 above the Head of Passes in Plaquemines Parish.

The spill happened in the Lower 12 Mile Point Anchorage, which is a place where vessels tie up to load or unload goods, or wait to head upriver, or leave the river.

Reportedly, the spill was due to the overfilling of a fuel tank aboard the MV Vitahorizon during fueling operations.  Spill response teams have boomed off vessels in the area and started cleanup operations........

Fishy Tales From Cumberland, Maine

Lobsterman Hauls In Ghostly, Translucent Lobster........

Alex Todd is a Maine lobsterman, and he has caught a variety of lobsters, some blue, some half blue and half orange.  Todd says that those don't even rank on the weirdness scale in comparison to the translucent crustacean he recently caught.

Late last month, Todd pulled up a trap containing a ghostly, pale blue lobster that looked to be nearly transparent.  He noted that it was definitely weird next to the mottled green and brown lobsters sharing the trap.

After taking photos, Todd threw the lobster back into the ocean, as it's tail had been notched, flagging it as an egg-bearing female.  Those lobsters are off-limits for conservation reasons........

Corps Alters Lock Operations To Thwart Carp Advance........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently changed how their lock and dam along the Mississippi River at Genoa, Wisconsin is operated in order to slow the upstream migration of the invasive Asian carp.

The Corps' changes are intended to stop the carp's movements, while minimally affecting native fish and barge traffic.  The changes are in response to recommendations made by University of Minnesota biologist Peter Sorensen, who has been studying the movements of fish.

Sorensen looked at how far and how fast carp can swim, and then utilized computer modeling to study how fast water flows through the dam gates.  He found that for the most part, the Asian carp were incapable of swimming through the gates.  He also determined that there were some conditions where the current was slow enough to allow the fish to pass........

Historic Shipwrecks Found In Lake Huron........

Researchers and NOAA maritime archaeologists recently located and identified two previously undiscovered historic shipwrecks within the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Lake Huron.

The wrecks have been identified as the wooden steamer Ohio and the steel-hulled steamer Choctaw

Back in May, a sanctuary-led expedition was using high resolution sonar to map the bottom of Lake Huron, when they located the two wrecks.  The researchers were confident that they had found the 202 foot Ohio and the 266 foot Choctaw.  The team recently verified the identity of the vessels using underwater robots to take photos and video of the wrecks........

Malibu Boats Stock Rating Downgraded........

Recently, the investment firm B. Riley downgraded their "buy" rating on Malibu Boats stock to "neutral" on the heels of Malibu's acquisition of Cobalt boats, and the equity follow-on offering completed last month.

Wells Fargo, however, retained their "buy" rating for Malibu Boats, claiming that the company would benefit from the redesign of their top selling model, the 23 LSV.

Senior B. Riley analyst Eric Wold says that valuation was a major consideration in the rating change, even though the shares are up 130-plus percent over last year........

Fed Flood Insurance May See Changes After Harvey........

Even as flooding recovery efforts are continuing in the St. Louis region, experts are are considering that the massive flooding in the wake of Hurricane Harvey will force the reshaping of the National Flood Insurance Program.

The NFIP is set to expire at the end of the month, but will likely be reauthorized with the expansion of the allowable debt limit.  The program is currently facing an increasing $24 billion deficit.

Laura Lightbody, director of a flood preparedness project at the Pew Charitable Trusts said that the program is taking less money than it is paying out, and it is not on a financially solvent path moving forward........

Float A Replica Fur Traders Canoe Down The River........

According to a press release, Big Muddy Adventures of St. Louis and the Alton Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau will be offering a series of half and full day canoe trips down the Mississippi River, from Pere Marquette State Park to Alton.

The trips are planned to be held in a 30 foot, 14 passenger wooden voyageur canoe, which is a modern version of the voyageur canoes used by fur traders 200 years ago.

Brett Stawar, president of the Alton Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau says that paddling the Mississippi River is a great way to experience the region.  He adds that Big Muddy Adventures has developed guided trips along the river that illustrates the essence of the Mississippi River........

All is good. The boat is running perfect, doing exactly what we tell it to do. Just a tough pack of racers. No work to do tonight.

Quick Action By Marina Crew Mitigates Boat Fire Damages........

Thanks to the quick response of the Kelly's Port Marina crew, two boaters were able to safely escape their vessel after it's engine compartment caught fire Friday afternoon.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that after 70 year old Danny Friend fueled his 1985 Bayliner, the engine compartment exploded as he was trying to start the boat.  The Patrol noted that the blower was not being used.

Kyle Kelly, operator of Kelly's Port Marina says that the gas dock crew's training includes fire scenarios.  Kelly added that the gas dock crew acted quickly and had all people, and the dog off the boat quickly and effectively.  They also had the fire out by the time that emergency responders arrived........

BoatUS Catastrophe Response Teams In Texas........

On Friday, BoatUS Catastrophe Response Teams were assessing damage caused by Hurricane Harvey.  They say that most of the damage across the region seems to have been caused by the wind, as opposed to the storm surge.

Mike McCook, a BoatUS Catastrophe Team Coordinator said that they are not certain of the extent of damage the marine industry has suffered.  He stated that claims from the Houston area are "trickling in", likely because people are taking care of more immediate needs.

McCook said it appears that Hurricane Harvey was not as hard on the marine industry as Hurricane Sandy was.  In October of 2012, Sandy sank 1,400 boats, and caused $650 million in damages to boats........

The River Has Reopened!.......

Throughout the day Friday, the traffic jam along the Mississippi River at Alton, Illinois continued while crews worked feverishly to make repairs to a cracked gate at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers spokeswoman Amanda Kruse announced that the Mississippi River reopened late Friday night.  As of 4:30 pm Friday, there were 19 northbound tows and 17 southbound tows waiting for the lock to reopen.

Kruse said that there were cracks discovered in the upstream gate in the main chamber during an inspection.  She noted that river traffic couldn't pass through the auxiliary lock as it was closed for scheduled repairs until September 10........

A Look At The Guys Who Catch River Monsters........

Nick Dickau and his fishing crew typically completes their morning commute before even mother nature gets up and around.  He notes that the best days are the calm ones, and is ever hopeful that they will catch the big one lurking about.

Dickau and crew throw cast their nets, and drag in buffalo, carp and sheepshead.  In a typical day of fishing, they will bring in approximately 3,000 pounds of fish, and send it to the market for sale.

The majority of the fish caught by Dickau and his crew will end up shipped around the globe to China, Eastern Europe and Israel for consumption.  The remainder ends up used locally as fertilizer........

Who Says Barge Removal Isn't Exciting?

While preparing a barge for removal from it's mooring may not be action-packed, some Davenport residents were not able to peel themselves away from the site of the former Rhythm City Casino barge along the riverfront.

Preparing the barge to be removed from the riverfront ended up being a bit more involved than originally anticipated.  Removing the first catwalk was hampered by rust and excessive amounts of paint.

The remaining catwalk, which was primarily used for boarding, had considerably more reinforcements to contend with.  Jared Gevock with Newt Marine Services said that their goal of having the barge moving by Friday afternoon may have been a bit too ambitious........
