Catch of the Day ... was sent to us by Capt'n Tyler Mitchell

Hey Bill,

Here's a catch of the day for ya.

My son Jake and friend Patrick were in a 3-fish catfish tournament Saturday night. They were fishin "somewhere" below the Alton dam.

Big one was over 84lbs and their 3 fish total was a whopping 147 lbs. Needless to say they won by a land slide. In fact they are checking for total weight and big fish tournaments records. WOW!

2nd place total was a mere 73 lbs.

Yah Mon.

Congressman:  Corps Needs To Fix Levees, Proceed With Flood Control Project........

On Monday, U.S. Representative Jason Smith advised officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to proceed with a flood control project along the Mississippi River near New Madrid, Missouri.  For years, environmental concerns blocked this project.

Smith was speaking on board the Corps' Motor Vessel Mississippi, when he addressed the seven member Mississippi River Commission during the commission's annual low water inspection trip.

The Environmental Protection Agency had determined that the $165 million project would harm fish and wildlife resources, as well as cause the loss of wetlands.  The flood control project has the support of local residents and farmers........

The Picture of the Day....was sent to us by Sherri Stanczak

Hi Bill,

Mike and I were out on the river yesterday and we ran into a good friend of mine Sherry Dyson. Her and her family were out having a dedication ceremony for the one-year anniversary of the death of her son Devon Alexander Deloach 02/19/91-08/07/16.

I was honored to be there with her and watch the beautiful sunset with them as they talked about memories of Devon and shared some laughs & tears.

Here is one of the photos we took of Sherri with her family. It's the first time she has had any of them on the beach, but as much as they loved it, I'm sure it won't be the last!

Love and prayers to you Sherri Dyson. I'm glad you got some peace from this!

Hi Bill,

I was out Sunday looking for a good spot to watch the eclipse on the 21st of August. I think that Fort Kaskaskia might be a good spot to view the eclipse. Fort Kaskaskia is a state park near Chester, Illinois, on a blufftop overlooking the Mississippi River.

News Release From BoatUS

VIDEOS: BoatUS Summer Boating How-to 'Film Festival' Kicks-off

NOT HOLLYWOOD, Calif., August 7, 2017 – What are the common boating tasks that drive boat owners to ask for help? Editors at BoatUS Magazine, the trusted voice of American boating, compiled a list of the top topics and announced the kickoff of a “BoatUS Summer How-to Film Festival” today with the release of 15 short, easily-watchable videos.
“We’re calling the video release a summer ‘film festival’ because all are themed with a how-to focus, are organized in one simple place to view, and are easy to watch outdoors,” added BoatUS Magazine associate editor Charles Fort.
Said BoatUS Magazine associate editor, Mark Corke, “The topics chosen come from decades of BoatUS member requests. These are the practical things that most trailer-boat owners want to know.”
Titles range from launching your boat solo and changing a prop to backing a boat trailer down the ramp, changing a bilge-pump switch, and troubleshooting trailer lights. Most are just two or three minutes long. Breakout the popcorn and check out the videos at YouTube.com/BoatUS.

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

A Look Back At St. Louis' Tap Water........

These days, when residents of St. Louis turn on their faucet, crisp, clean water comes out.  Just over a century ago, however, the water in St. Louis looked like the river it was drawn from .

In the late 1800's, the City began making upgrades to the system, including the construction of the Chain of Rocks Water Plant, and the little castles in the river used as water pickups.  Unfortunately, the tap water remained brown and muddy.

In 1901, when it was certain that the Worlds Fair was coming to St. Louis, the City hired three experts to come up with a way to treat the water.  The experts came up with a system using iron and lime to make the water clear, just two weeks before the fair opened........

Saturday's Boating Disaster

Lake O' Pines, Texas

Three Scouts Death Reminiscent Of 1982 Incident........

Shortly before Christmas in 1982, four East Texans were taking a sailboat onto the Lake O' the Pines, when the mast struck overhead power lines, injuring one man, and killing a lawyer, G. Brackett Irwin.

It's believed that Irwin thought the vessel bottomed out, so he reached for the shifter, and electricity coursed through his body, killing him.  Attorney Steve Kattner recalled the incident, noting that the current felt like it went through his arm and out of his hand.

Kattner and two others survived the incident and after the lawsuit was settled, the power lines were raised.  Irwin's brother Thomas says that this weekend's incident reminded him and others of that fateful day in 1982........

The Pictures of the Day....were sent to us by Capt'n Darryll Weil who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis in the cruiser.... After You

Bill:
Went up to the St. Francis of Assisi Church picnic in Portage des Sioux and started placing the Blessing of the Fleet yard signs and banners. First one we ever placed was at the Mississippi River Trading Post so they got the first one this year also. Ashley posed with it after helping place it. Noticed a vehicle down by the Shrine, turned out to be Mark and his daughter Stephanie taking care of the flower beds so the Our Lady of the Rivers shrine will be looking good for the Blessing. My River Home Marina (our hosts) got the banner on their walkway to the LaRosa Tiki Bar. After all that we enjoyed some great chicken dinners and a tractor pull at the church picnic. Saw several of our boating friends there also!

2nd Telegraph Recovered From Lusitania Wreck........

Divers recently recovered another artifact from the wreckage of the RMS Lusitania, which sank on May 7, 1915 after being torpedoed by a German U-boat off the Head of Kinsale.

River Bill:
We had a great Saturday on the Mississippi! We participated in the My River Home Poker Run and had a great time! We started at MRH for the Bloody Mary breakfast, headed to Alton Marina for the wild card, made a "shot stop" at the island, visited Kinder's for a peach daiquiri, ate lunch at Cedar Hill, went to Boathouse for live music, and ended back up at MRH for the BBQ dinner. We covered a lot of water for the crummy cards we were dealt, but can't complain because the company was great! Now, we're looking forward to The Blessing, the scavenger hunt, and Hogback!

Agriculture, Shipping Interests Call For Infrastructure Improvements........

On Friday, officials were touring the Mississippi River around the Quad Cities in an effort to drum up support for making upgrades to locks along the nation's waterways.

Making upgrades to the nation's lock and dam system has been on the to-do list for shipping and agricultural interests for quite some time.  Friday's barge tour was intended to bring attention to the aging lock and dam system, which moves approximately 60 percent of the nation's grain exports.

An official with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reports that the condition of Lock and Dam No.15 at Rock Island is average.  As the tour was locking through, officials pointed out a 15 foot section of wall that had been demolished in the spring.  It was in poor condition and removed to prevent pieces from falling into the river........

Book Looks At The History Of The Lake Of The Ozarks........

Last year, local authors Dan William Peek and Kent Van Landuyt published the book, A People's History of the Lake of the Ozarks.  On Saturday, the authors will be hosting a book signing from 2 - 5 pm at Harmy's Cheese Store in Osage Beach.

The book focuses on the social and economic impact that the construction of the Bagnell Dam and the creation of the Lake of the Ozarks had on residents and the region.

A People's History of the Lake of the Ozarks looks at how the need for the Bagnell Dam came about.  The Passage of the Federal Water Power Act during the 1920s fueled the race to produce and distribute electricity........

Rules Of The Water:  Who "Gives Way" When Two Boats Meet?

There is a separate set of rules for piloting a boat, however, many boaters remain ignorant to these rules.  A common question is when two boats meet, and their courses converge, who should maintain their course, and who should give way?

The answer is found in Rule 18 of the the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, (COLREG), which are international maritime regulations.

Note, COLREG defines “underway” as a vessel not at anchor, or made fast to the shore, or aground.

1. A power-driven vessel underway shall keep out of the way of:
   -A vessel not under command
-A vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver
   -A vessel engaged in fishing
   -A sailing vessel
2. A sailing vessel shall keep out of the way of:
   -A vessel not under command
-A vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver
   -A vessel engaged in fishing
3. A vessel engaged in fishing when underway shall, so far as possible, keep out of the way of:
   -A vessel not under command
-A vessel restricted in her ability to maneuver

Mississippi River Shipping

Study Looks At Shipping Disruption........

The Upper Mississippi River - Illinois River is the main corridor for U.S. Grain and oilseeds to reach the export ports in the Gulf of Mexico.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is tasked with maintaining a 9 foot deep navigation channel for barge transportation on a total 28 locks and dams on the Upper Mississippi River, and 8 on the Illinois River.

The majority of these locks and dams were built during the 1930s, and have outlived their designed lifespan.  Maintenance and rehabilitation projects has extended the lifespan of these locks and dams.

The U.S. grain and oilseed industry has often raised concerns over the navigational efficiency of these constrained and aging waterways........

The Joe Page Bridge

Illinois River History

A Look At Who Joe Page Was........

People living in the Riverbend know the Joe Page Bridge.  The span is the green steel draw bridge over the Illinois River that links East Hardin in Green County and Hardin in Calhoun.

The Joe Page Bridge was completed on July 23, 1931, and was rebuilt in 2004.  After the span was completed, it was named for the man responsible for it's construction, Joe Page.

After serving in the Union Army during the Civil War, Page settled in Jerseyville, where he was the editor of the local newspaper.  He also worked as an architect and engineer........

Asian Carp Update

Officials Seek New Ways To Keep Asian Carp Out Of The Great Lakes........

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder recently announced the start of the state's "Invasive Carp Challenge", which has the potential for earning you some money.

According to Snyder, the state is accepting proposals for keeping Asian carp out of the Great Lakes.  Scientists say that if Asian carp become established in the Greta Lakes, they could crowd out native species.

While engineers and researchers are working on the issue, Michigan is looking for input from creative thinkers from across the globe.  Proposals will be accepted through October 31, and one or more winners will share up to $700,000........

River History....

Aug 03, 2015 in River History

The Goldenrod Showboat.

As the river levels dropped, the bow and stern of the Goldenrod were sitting on the bottom of the riverbed, but the center of the vessel was not, causing the hull to buckle.

It was decided at that time to remove the contents from the heart of the showboat for display in a museum at a later date and scrap the boat.

As of today, the boat is still resting in Kampsville, IL. but the hopes of saving her have all but diminished.
