Flooding Aftermath

Officials:  Don't Reuse Sandbags........

Local government provided sandbags to counties in Illinois to help fight the recent flooding.  Sandbags are cheap to make, due to the economies of scale, the low cost of supplies, and volunteer labor.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is warning the public that once sandbags have come in contact with floodwaters, they should not be reused, as floodwaters contain waste and a variety of chemicals.

Some local governments are allowing residents to return sandbags to the public works facilities.  According to IEPA Spokeswoman Kim Biggs says hat the canvas style sandbags can be burned with an open burn permit from the IEPA........

Boat Handling

How Long Will It Take To Stop A Boat?

Just how quick can your boat stop in an emergency?  The answer is not quickly enough.  The good news is that a boater that is aware of their reaction time, as well as the vessel's stopping distance is the most prepared to avoid a collision.

The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators report that the third leading cause of boat collisions with other boats, shores and seawalls is speed, behind operator inattention and careless operation.

Even if a boater is paying attention, response times to a situation may be at least 5 seconds from perception to the boat's initial response.  The boat will still take awhile to stop.  The best course of action is to steer out of the danger........

Mississippi River Management

Flood Mitigation Plans Dependant Upon Differing Opinions........

While residents along the Mississippi River, engineers, environmentalists and governmental entities agree that there is a need for a coordinated strategy to mitigate flooding, environmentalists and engineers disagree on what flood controls should be taken.

Some believe that the answer to flooding issues is upgrading structures such as levees to protect people and property from flood waters.  Others cite research that show that levees constrict rivers, worsening flooding.

This week, local, state and federal officials met with conservation groups at a summit in Dubuque, Iowa to discuss their concerns about flooding, and discuss solutions........

These increases signal increases in spending on new and pre-owned boats and components, however, the increases were offset by a 4.6 percent decrease in spending on fuel and other maintenance costs........

News Release From BoatUS

Who's Tops in Sea Scouting?

Hard-working teens from Sea Scout Ship 100, SSS Dominion, honored with national flagship award

Sea Scouting is a specialized program from the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) that improves youth boating skills with on-water practice, outdoor, social, and service experiences, and shares knowledge of our maritime heritage. There are about 6,500 teens, about one-third female, participating in 550 “Ships” nationwide. But if you want to know who is the best Ship in the country, that honor goes to Sea Scout Ship 100, SSS Dominion, of Manassas, Virginia, which was recently bestowed with the 15th Annual Sea Scout National Flagship Award.
The prestigious award, created by Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) in 2002 to mark the 90th anniversary of Sea Scouting, recognizes excellence in program quality, youth achievement and adult commitment.
Chartered by the Freedom Museum (an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution) in Manassas, SSS Dominion was formed in 2012 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Sea Scout Program in BSA. With 20 active scouts, SSS Dominion maintains a very active and diverse program supporting youth around the western suburbs of Washington, D.C.

The Ship meets weekly, either at Manassas Airport or Dominion Boathouse where it stores its small boats and gear and runs a fleet of seven boats from 22 to 46 feet, including a Morgan ketch. Members have sailed the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay, cruised at night, completed many senior leadership programs, hosted American Heart Association First Aid and CPR courses, and participated in food drives with the St. Lucy Project, which serves as the “Food Bank of Food Banks” for the Northern Virginia area.
SSS Dominion also provides senior leadership to the Chesapeake Flotilla Winter Training at Catoctin Mountain Park in Thurmont, Maryland. In March, the Ship provided “Landship” ceremonies for the Northeast Region Bridge of Honor in Swedesboro, New Jersey. And when an unexpected electrical outage left one of the Ship’s prized boat engines underwater and near ruin, the Scouts successfully rebuilt the motor.
To learn more about Sea Scout Ship 100 SSS Dominion. visit www.ship100.wordpress.com. To learn more about the Sea Scouting program and how you might become involved with the program in your area, go to https://seascout.org and check out the website.

Charrette Creek Near Wright City, Missouri

700 Fish Killed After Luxury Resort Dumps Sewage........

On July 4, the largest fish kill in 20 years occurred along Charrette Creek, a tributary of the Missouri River, near Wright City, Missouri.

Up to 700 fish, including perch sunfish, blue gill and minnows, were coming to the water's surface, gasping for air and dying.  Witnesses reported a heavy odor of raw sewage.

Cole Hough, an investigator with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources reported that raw sewage was released into the creek, reducing the amount of dissolved oxygen below what the fish could withstand, killing them.

The sewage was traced back to Welcome to Innsbrook, a luxury resort community in Warren County.  Over the 4th of July weekend, the resort's sewage treatment facility was overloaded, leading to the sewage release........

92nd Annual Chincoteague Pony Swim in Assateague Channel .......

CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. — The Coast Guard enforced a safety zone for the 92nd Annual Chincoteague Pony Swim in Assateague Channel Wednesday.

Two Coast Guard 24-foot Special Purpose Craft-Shallow Water boat crews from Station Chincoteague worked alongside Virginia Marine Police crews to keep onlookers safe.

Station Chincoteague crew members ignited orange smoke signals at 6:47 a.m. to denote slack tide and mark the official start of the event.

Saltwater Cowboys then guided a herd of about 200 wild ponies across the channel. It took the ponies 18 minutes to swim from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island.

Thousands of spectators gather on the eastern side of Chincoteague Island and along the channel to witness the Pony Swim each year.

Lake Of The Ozarks

A Look At The Lake During The 1950s........

During the 1950s, the Lake of the Ozarks came into it's own, riding a wave of post-war prosperity and revolutionary technology advances.  The Lake became a recreational Mecca in Missouri, increasingly hosting the largest, fastest, and most well-adorned pleasure boats in the world.

There were major innovations made during the 1950s that changed boating forever, including the shift from old, rounded displacement hulls to variations on planing hulls.  Also, developments were made in propulsion, moving from direct drive to v-drive, surface drive, and ultimately to the inboard/outboard or sterndrive units.

While Owens Corning began producing fiberglass commercially in the 1930s, it made an impact on the boat building industry during the 1950s.  Wood and aluminum remained popular with boaters, but more manufacturers started working with fiberglass, which would eventually replace wood, boasting of strength and weight advantages........

Mississippi River Research

Researchers Build Mississippi River Model To Study Diversions........

Researchers with the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority will soon have a new tool, with the completion of a 90 x 120 foot physical model of the Mississippi River, and it's delta.

Rudy Simoneaux, project manager for the LCPRA says that the model will cover 179 miles of the river, from Donaldsonville to the Gulf of Mexico.

The physical model is intended to supplement research.  Simoneaux says that the model isn't intended to determine how much land will be built with diversions, but how the river extracts sediment from it's bed........

River History....

July 27, 1817 in River History

The steamboat era began in the city of St. Louis on July 27, 1817 when the "Zebulon M. Pike" arrived. Rapids in the river north of the city made St. Louis the northernmost navigable port for many large boats. St. Louis was quickly transformed into a bustling boomtown, commercial center, and inland port

High Water Forces Change In American Queen's Route........

High water levels along the Upper Mississippi River are causing the American Queen to change her course away form the Quad-Cities.

The six-story tall American Queen was scheduled to dock in Clinton, Iowa on July 27, however, high river levels will prevent the vessel from passing under the Interstate 280 Bridge.

On Wednesday, the American Queen was slated to pass through the Quad-Cities en-route to Clinton.  The American Duchess, sister ship of the American Queen is expected to be in the area next week........

llinois Flooding News

Heavy Storm Intensify Flooding In Northern Illinois........

The heavy thunderstorms that brought strong winds, hail and a deluge of rainfall across northern Illinois has intensified the recent flooding in some areas.

The already swollen Fox River began to rise again after it had already begun to recede.  There was also flooding reported in western Illinois, as the Rock and Mississippi Rivers were rising out of their banks.

The Rock River at Moline has risen just shy of 15 feet, which is three feet above flood stage.  The Mississippi River at Rock Island was at 15.54 feet, with a crest of 16.4 feet expected to occur on Tuesday........

Mississippi River Pollution

Researchers Study Waterborne Plastics In The River........

Mark Benfield and his team of scientists at Louisiana State University are studying the small beads and microscopic strands of plastic found in the Mississippi River and their effects upon the food chain.

The team has determined that there are far higher concentrations of this type of pollution around New Orleans compared to Baton Rouge.  The theory is that riverside plants are spilling minute plastic particles in the river, however, they cannot pinpoint a source.

These microplastics, defined as plastic particles smaller than 5 millimeters, absorb certain chemicals and end up being eaten by fish.  Research has suggested that this can cause problems for the entire food chain........

A Shout Out About Boat Wakes

Pool 26 of the Mississippi River

Dardenne Slough

Hi Bill.
Just wondering if you could give a shout out to all the Big Boaters out there about their wakes.

We are up on the Dardenne Slough across from Dardenne Island. This year has been the worst for wakes in my five years here at this property.

15 Docks have been damaged from all these 40 plus ft boats plowing water. And most of these docks have been here for years and gone thru flood after flood. They make thru the winter ice, but not these monster boat wakes.

So far no one has been hurt yet.

What ever you can do will be appreciated....

Tony

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

'Boat Season' Is Arriving In Hannibal........

While most people around Hannibal believe that boat season comes around when the ice melts enough for them to launch their boats into the Mississippi River, Gail Bryant, director of the Hannibal Convention and Visitors Bureau, believes that boat season refers to the arrival of large riverboats packed with passengers ready to tour America's Hometown.

Even though the Spirit of Peoria docked along the Hannibal riverfront earlier this month, Bryant said that the return of the big riverboats with overnight accommodations for the passengers officially starts on Tuesday, July 25.  The American Queen will be docking at noon.

Bryant says that they enjoy having riverboats stop in Hannibal, since it gives visitors an opportunity to see something extra.  At this time, there are 25 dockings scheduled for Hannibal's 'Boat Season'.  Bryant adds that the schedule is not concrete, as last year, there were 17 dockings, but 10 cancellations........

The Forecasted Crest For The Mississippi River Is Lowered........

While the Mississippi River is still rapidly rising around the Quad Cities, officials have lowered the predicted crest by a foot from Saturday's forecast.

The National Weather Services' North Central River Forecast Center in Chanhassen, Minnesota released new data on Sunday predicting that the Mississippi River at Lock and Dam No.15, Rock Island will be cresting at 16.4 feet around 7 am Tuesday.

On Sunday, meteorologist Bill Nichols with the National Weather Service, Davenport, said that the Quad Cities region got a lot of rainfall in a short period of time, and it took a few days to sort through the data.  He adds that the data trend is positive and if anything, the forecast could be slightly lower........

Nearly every 20 years, the USS Constitution enters dry dock for below-the-waterline repairs.  The latest round of restoration work involves the replacement of 100 hull planks and the installation of 2,200 new copper sheets........

Cousins predicts that the Mississippi River at Rock Island, Illinois will reach a crest of 17.4 feet between Monday and Tuesday before starting to recede.

Mississippi River Valley Heritage Focus Of New Art Gallery........

On Sunday, July 23, The Mississippi River Gallery will be opening.  There will be an open house all week, and on Saturday, July 29, there will be a Champaign reception.

Artist Patricia Garey's work is inspired by the landscapes and cityscapes found along the Mississippi River Valley.  She traveled up and down the valley with her husband Richard, who portrays Mark Twain on riverboat trips.

The gallery has been a long-term dream of Garey, who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree.  The Mississippi River Valley Gallery will be sharing space with Planter's Barn Theater, which Richard purchased 15 years ago........
