The Picture of YesterYears on this day in 2016 ....  was sent to us by Capt'n Gary Lucy, river painter extraordinaire, who hails out of My River Home in his houseboat /studio....... The River Rover.

Hi Bill!

I would like to post of new piece of work:   The Robt. E. Lee: Steaming Up River at Sunset.

I have always been a big fan of the 1870 Robt. E. Lee. As you will remember, she was the winner of the Great Steamboat Race of 1870 from New Orleans to St. Louis. My paintings depicting this race can be seen on my web site garylucy.com .

In the race, the Natchez was the faster boat. However, the Robt. E. Lee won because of great determination. Also, I have enjoyed this piece because of the experimentation with the light. Please comment and share if you like.

Stay close to the pool or the A/C the weekend. Summer is coming early this year. I just finished another painting of which I have been working on while at the River Rover....studio/houseboat. I will post images later.

The heat and some needed repairs to the RR have brought me back to the Washington studio. The RR is up in dry dock with hopes to be back in the water soon.

Mississippi River Shipping

As River Conditions Improve, Barge Tonnages Increase........

In early June, the Mississippi River between St. Paul Minnesota an Cape Girardeau, Missouri has been falling.  The levels of the Lower Ohio River and Arkansas River have been falling as well.

As navigation conditions improve along the Upper Mississippi, Ohio and Arkansas Rivers, the weekly grain barge tonnage had increased by 22% to 952 thousand tons.

After several weeks of persistent heavy rainfall, as well as the high rive levels along the Mississippi River, barge traffic was still slowed by river conditions in several parts of the river system........

06-10-17 Facebook post...
We made 37 miles today...not good time as we departed at 8 am and anchored at 4 pm. Tow boats were everywhere. Southbound tows are bad enough, the wake from Northbound towboats is horrendous for a houseboat. The wake takes 30 minutes to clear. We must have encountered over 20 towboats. In some cases the river channel was narrow with a sandbar on one side, so we waited for both the channel and the wake to clear. Then there was a river wind today that magnified the wake and also created white cap water...super high wind that tosses around high profile houseboats. We anchored for the night at Osceola, Arkansas, on the Osceola River. Fifty miles to Memphis tomorrow...

Malibu/Mastercraft Dispute Concluded........

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently issued a favorable ruling to Malibu regarding a patent dispute with MasterCraft over their wake surf systems.

The MasterCraft Boat Co. had asked the Patent and Trademark Office to re-examine the patent during previous litigation between MasterCraft and Malibu.

Malibu said that the agency found that none of the arguments in MasterCraft's petitions offered a reasonable likelihood for success regarding the challenged claims........

06-09-17 Facebook post...

We arrived at Cottonwood Point River mile 830 at 4 p.m. We intended to go 15 miles further but found a great place to anchor. Last night we were in the wake of tow boats with no cell service, tonight we are in calm water with cell service. It is 82 more miles to Memphis, Tennessee. About 5 p.m. yesterday at New Madrid Missouri, the channel narrowed down and a Northbound towboat was coming through. I gave the towboat wide berth but fail to see the coming sandbar. The depth finder went from 12 ft to 1 foot in a second. We were grounded on the Sandbar. Looking at the water you could not see The Sandbar under the water. After over two hours we were finally able to plow through the sand knowing at any time we could incapacitate the last engine. We did not. We anchored shortly thereafter at New Madrid River mile 883 so today we covered 53 miles. A warning to River travelers, steer far clear of sand bars. What you see is only a small part of the sandbar. What you cannot see we'll get you. Our goal is to make Memphis tomorrow afternoon. Eighty-seven miles is a lot to cover but we covered 78 miles from Cape Girardeau Missouri to Hickman Kentucky. All is good! Chef John David Montgomery cooked a gourmet meal this evening, including smothered hamburger steak, French style English peas, and trimmings including gravy. Many people do not know that he went to cooking school in New Orleans, Louisiana. I once again want to thank all of the people who helped us in Hickman Kentucky including Captain Buzz Captain Love, Alex Mudd, Mr. Manly and my daughter and son-in-law. I also want to thank Wepfer Marine who pulled us out when we were grounded, and the Marine Service in New Madrid Missouri who wanted to help but could not reach us. They gave me the encouragement to continue trying to get ungrounded. Memphis bound tomorrow!

PRESS Release

BEWARE CARBON MONOXIDE

Many boaters have recently taken their boats out on our lakes and rivers for the first time this year. When summer heats up many will use their generators which give off the silent killer Carbon Monoxide (CO). It continues to be important to alert everyone about this deadly poison that attacks boaters each year.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary would like to remind boaters that Carbon Monoxide is colorless, odorless and highly poisonous. If you are drowsy, have a headache, get dizzy, feel weak or nauseous you could faint and go into a coma. These are all systems of poisoning from Carbon Monoxide.

Common sources of this silent killer are: auxiliary engines, generators, cooking ranges, space heaters and water heaters. Engine exhaust around a swim platform and others mentioned can cause Carbon Monoxide fatalities. Any enclosed area such as sleeping accommodations, a galley with a sink and a head compartment hold potential danger to hold unventilated fumes from Carbon Monoxide exhaust.

Safety tips offered by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary include maintaining engines/generators’ by a qualified marine technician. Keep forward facing hatches open to allow fresh air to circulate. Keep people clear of the rear deck and swim platform while the generator or engines are running.

Install a marine Carbon Monoxide detector. It may save your life and others on your boat. Remember too that nearby boats might be running engines and generators that could send CO fumes your way. And, don’t forget
to test each marine carbon monoxide detector on your boat.

Starting May 2017 the state of Minnesota has a new law to protect boaters from carbon monoxide. It’s called Sophie’s Law. For more information contact: www.dnr.mn.us/safety/boatwater/sophias-law.html or call MN DNR 651-259-5400

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary created by an Act of Congress in 1939 is the uniformed civilian component of the U.S. Coast Guard supporting the Coast Guard in nearly all its missions. For more information on the Coast Guard Auxiliary, please visit cgaux.org

Resident:  Trash In The River Coming From The Corps........

Larry Barfield lives along Missouri's Black river, and noted that there has been a considerable amount of trash coming down the river.  He says that the river is up, muddy, and there is a lot of trash coming down.

Barfield believes that the debris is coming from U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' landfills.  He claims that he knows this, because he helped fill in the landfills.  Barfield adds that the Corps used to dump all of the trash from their parks into landfills.

Fred Esser, operations project manager says that water was filling the emergency spillway so quickly that it didn't stay on it's course.  Esser said that the water was expected to head in one direction, but went in another, exposing the landfill.  Plans for cleaning up the mess are in the works........

Body Recovered From The River....  Was Man Who Tried To Save His Son........

Around 10 am Friday, crew members aboard a Rock Island Arsenal Fire Department rescue boat spotted a body in the Mississippi River.

The body was that of Malik A. Williams, who was the man that jumped into the river after his young son fell in.  Rock Island County Coroner Brian Gustafson said that an autopsy will not be performed, however, toxicology is pending.

Around 8:30 pm Tuesday, police had been called out to the river for reports that people had fallen into the river.  Upon arrival, they found that Williams and his 6 year old son had been fishing.  The boy reportedly went into the water, and Williams went after him in an effort to save the boy.  Williams did not resurface........

She's using her artistic talent to paint a scene at Hoppies, which was her home for more than a month last year during the flood. During her visit, Ashley is planning on visiting her second-favorite marina, too. Woodland Marina!

Fenton Addressing Flooding, Focus On Valley Park Levee, Landfill........

On Thursday, residents and business owners packed into the Fenton Board of Aldermen committee meeting, where the topic of discussion was flooding issues.

Alderman Joe Maurath said that something has happened over the past several years, and the problem must be identified and dealt with.  Many believe that the recent flooding wasn't caused by rainfall alone, but attributed to a levee and floodplain development upstream in Valley Park.

The levee in Valley Park was completed in 2005, and has been condemned as being constructed higher than it's authorized height.  Critics also point to the Peerless Park landfill, which was constructed in the flood plain, as another cause for flooding downstream........

Well...stuff (#!/#) happens. Challenges add flavor to adventures! We were nearing departure from Hickman, Kentucky, thinking today would be the day. Intent was to clean
the boat this morning and stock groceries this afternoon. We moored the boat yesterday evening with the nose in the water and on the shore. We came to the boat with cleaning supplies and intended to get groceries later in the afternoon. When we got to the boat about noon today the boat was grounded and water had fallen so much that we were not able to reverse out of where we were. We sought assistance from the Coast Guard but they were not able to help us. They did refer us to a Marine Service that normally makes up tow boats. The boat captain was extremely helpful and they were able to get us ungrounded. However during the process something happened to the starboard motor Drive. It could possibly be a rope wrapped around the propeller or could be more serious and be a gear or something in the outdrive itself. Like I said stuff happens and new challenges arise. The good side of things is that the port motor was the best motor and is the motor that controls steering. There is no facilities here to look at issues with a 1969 houseboat. The plan forward is to stock groceries tomorrow morning and be on the water by noon heading to Memphis on one motor. We had planned to utilize the current to a greater degree anyway. When we get to a marina in Memphis we will attempt to get someone to diagnose the issue with the starboard motor. If it is a rope wrapped around we will get the engine fixed. If it is a problem with the outdrive we will likely continue to Natchez on one engine. In any case, we have plenty of gasoline, cigarettes, whiskey, food, water and downriver current! Life is good!

Mississippi River At Muscatine, Iowa

New Multimodal Port Proposed For Muscatine........

According to the Port of Muscatine Planning and Feasibility Study, the time is right to develop an intermodal container terminal and port district along the Mississippi River.

Dave Gobin, the Community Development Director says that Muscatine is in  a unique position regarding the development of a port.  There is a need for this type of port, as there are none along the Mississippi River north of St. Louis.

The study was conducted to determine whether a multi-modal container terminal port facility located in Muscatine was feasible.  The proposed terminal site is located on property owned by the Kent Corporation south of the city........

NMMA Comments On EPA Regulatory Relief........

The National Marine Manufacturers Association recently submitted formal comments to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency about the agency's request to revisit air and radiation actions.

The NMMA states that most of their comments focused on recreational marine engines, and what the NMMA believes are several redundant oversight programs.

The EPA's request was born from an executive order that called on federal agencies to review the existing regulations and identify ones ripe for repeal, replacement or modification........

On Monday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District and the Lake Pepin Legacy Alliance hosted a meeting in Red Wing, Minnesota to discuss an environmental restoration project.

This project intends to use material dredged from the Mississippi River in Pool 4 to construct new islands at the head of Lake Pepin.  The Corps says that the islands will provide habitat and slow erosion.

Representatives from the Minnesota and Wisconsin Departments of Natural Resources, Audubon, Ducks Unlimited and Congressmen Jason Lewis' office attended the meeting, where they talked about project objectives, concept ideas, constraints, available data, and the process for proceeding........

US Congress passed the Motorboat Act.

Yesteryear's Picture on this Day in 2016........  was taken at Mark Adams' Retirement Party at the Kirkwood Train Station. What a great place for a party and what a nice party it was.

Mark retired from National Marine Manufacturers Association and they celebrated his career at the station. Lots of friends and business associates were there to compliment Mark and you know they had to roast him a bit too. Nice show.

Mark retired from the position of President of the the St. Louis Boat and Sportshow and he was involved in many other boat shows around the country and the world.

Thanks Mark for making RiverBills.com a part of the St. Louis Boat and Sportshow !  I am very glad to have worked with you over the past few years and I am proud to call you my friend....

If you see Mark out on the river in his Boston Whaler, give him a shout out !

Metro East Levees

Levee Fight Focuses On Calhoun County's Proposal........

Calhoun County, Illinois is playing host to the latest fight between levee advocates and opposition groups who would like to see overbuilt levees cut down to legal sizes.

The majority of the latest Calhoun County Board meetings have focused on levees.  During last week's meeting, Ed Williams, Mayor of the Village of Hamburg called on commissioners to reconsider their May 15 decision to not approve a resolution against new levee regulations proposed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

The proposed regulations would considerably lessen the ability of the IDNR to regulate levee heights, even though federal levee rules would still apply.  Lobbyists are currently pushing to eliminate those federal regulations........

No pictures to show for today as we have been too busy to take photographs. Thank goodness for friends, especially Captain Wayne Busby. He helped locate a truck to pick up the new generator and found friends to pick the generator up to the boat. Feats that I could not accomplish myself. Many thanks to my daughter who loaned us a car so we could make multiple trips back and forth to the boat. We accomplished washing two-weeks of clothing including sheets, buying a new generator and getting it installed on the boat. Additionally we made multiple trips to the gas station to fill up gasoline cans and bring back to the boat to fill up gas tanks and fifty gallon drums. Finally we went to the Ferry Landing in Hickman to take on fresh water. Lots accomplished but we may need another day to get groceries to replace the groceries that were lost when the generator went out and clean the boat thoroughly before departure.

Officials Discuss Dam Plan For Meramec River Basin........

Tim Brinker, First District Commissioner for Franklin County, is interested in reviving plans for building a dam to control floodwaters within the Meramec River Basin.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had looked into the proposal in the 1970's, and by the late 1980's, they determined that the project was not economically viable.  Brinker requested that the Corps look at the proposal again, and they did, but with the original data.  They reached the same conclusion.  Brinker is calling for a new study, utilizing data collected over the past few years.

If the study determines that a reservoir in Union is the answer to flooding within the Meramec River Basin, it will take more than a decade to obtain congressional approval, funding, and the reservoir construction.  The Corps is currently working on new mapping tools for flooding within the Meramec River Basin, and they are also looking at other possible flood reduction projects........

Wood River Watershed Day........

On Saturday, June 24, from 9 am to 3 pm, the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center and 1 Mississippi will be hosting Wood River Watershed Day at Steve Bryant Community Park in Bethalto.

The Wood River Watershed Day will entail water quality monitoring, as well as a trash clean up along the east fork of the Wood River and Rocky Branch, which are tributaries of Wood River.

NGRREC Riverwatch Coordinator Matt Young says that Wood River is listed amongst Illinois' impaired streams, due to channelization, storm/urban runoff, and loss of side stream habitat.  The event allows attendees to be stewards of the freshwater we rely on........

IDNR Offers Bounty On Black Carp........

Commercial fishermen not only in Illinois, but other states as well, have been enlisted to help remove Asian carp from the waterways.  The Illinois Department of Conservation is asking the public to be on the lookout for the black carp, who may be on the verge of entering the Great Lakes.

Kevin Irons, with the IDNR, says there are several species of Asian carp, including the bighead, grass, silver, and the black carp.  He notes that the black carp looks similar to the grass carp.

The IDNR is offering a $100 bounty on the black carp, and to collect, call Irons at (217) 557-0719, or email kevin.irons@illinois.gov Since efforts to control Asian carp may disrupt the river navigation system, the Illinois Farm Bureau, and other groups are keeping an eye on control efforts........

06-06-17 Facebook post...

We made it to Hickman, Kentucky today from Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Kind of special since this is where I grew up. The harbor is a still water harbor, and mooring is allowed right beside the Coast Guard cutter, best boat security ever. As you can see from the photos, Hickman is a very neat historic town. One of the photos is Cairo Point, where the Mississippi and Ohio rivers come together. We are here a couple of days at the Hickman harbor to replace a bad generator, fill up gas, stock groceries, and get our land legs back for the last half of the expedition

Taney County angler catches state-record redear sunfish
News from the region: Statewide
byLucas Bond,Jun 05, 2017

TANEY COUNTY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reports Dominik Penner of Merriam Woods Village became the most recent record-breaking angler in Missouri when he caught a redear sunfish on Table Rock Lake. The new “alternative method” record fish caught by Penner on May 14 weighed 1 pound, 5 ounces. Penner’s recent catch broke the previous state record of 1-pound, 1-ounce, caught earlier this year.

Penner caught the fish on a trotline. A trotline is a heavy fishing line with baited hooks attached at intervals by means of branch lines called snoods. A snood is a short length of line which is attached to the main line using a clip or swivel with the hook at the end.

MDC weighed the redear sunfish on a certified scale at Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery in Branson.

“This is the sixth state-record fish this year. 2017 is shaping up to be a year for state-record fish,” said MDC Fisheries Programs Specialist Andrew Branson. “The mild weather we have had this year means more anglers are fishing, and catching big fish.”

Missouri state-record fish are recognized in two categories: pole-and-line and alternative methods. Alternative methods include: throwlines, trotlines, limb lines, bank lines, jug lines, spearfishing, snagging, snaring, gigging, grabbing, archery, and atlatl. For more information on state-record fish, visit the MDC website at http://on.mo.gov/2efq1vl

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

The Amphitheater Is Open To The Public....  Most Of The Time....

For most of the year, the Liberty Bank Alton Amphitheater is a free part of Alton's Riverfront Park, located along the Mississippi River near the Alton Marina.

This reminder comes from Robert Stephan, head of the amphitheater commission, who says that there are some misconceptions about the facility.  Many believe that the process to rent the facility is too cumbersome.  Stephan said that the language contained in the lease agreement is intended to cover the possibility of a promoter bringing an event that would bring in several thousand attendees.

Stephan notes that the park is an open park, and the public is free to use all parts of the park, including the amphitheater, at any time, with the exception of scheduled events........

News Release From BoatUS

A Sleepy Subject That Could Keep a Boater Awake at Night

7 important things to know about the fine print on your boat's insurance policy

ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 5, 2017 – While it’s a subject not often discussed, knowing what’s in your boat’s insurance policy could mean the difference between having to pay significant costs out of pocket for a claim or coming away from the claims experience in good shape. What do you need to know? Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) takes a look at the fine print on seven of the most important coverages.
1. The consequential damage fine print: Half of all sinkings occur at the dock when some small part below the waterline fails. However, these parts that include such things as an rubber outdrive bellows, for example, most often fail due to “wear, tear, and corrosion” or a lack of maintenance, so the policy won’t pay for a new bellows. But here’s the rub: As a consequence of the failed bellows, your boat has now sunk and a total loss. Who pays for that? Check your policy now for “consequential damage” coverage that pays for these losses that often start with a failed part that may be excluded under the policy. In this case, the failed bellows may not be covered – but the rest of the repairs or total loss (sunk boat) will be. One caveat: This consequential damage coverage often applies only to major or total losses. It’s typical, for example, to cover the immediate consequential damage resulting from any fire, explosion, sinking, demasting, collision or stranding.
2. The fuel-spill liability fine print: In addition to your policy’s standard liability coverage for physical damage or bodily injury to a third party, fuel-spill liability protects you from claims for cleanup or third-party damage from the accidental discharge of oil or fuel that can occur in a sinking, fire, collision or grounding. Some policies just pay the costs associated with a fuel spill up to the policy’s set limit of boating liability coverage. A better policy separates out fuel-spill liability and provides coverage up to the maximum amount you can be held liable for under federal law, which today is a whopping $939,800.
3. The on-water towing fine print: Many boat insurance policies today offer some kind of on-water towing endorsement that provides a level of towing and assistance for routine breakdowns or soft ungroundings. Know how you will be able to use that coverage including who provides the service and does the company have 24-hour dispatch service? Also know when you will have to pay for a tow out of pocket and be reimbursed.
4. The salvage coverage fine print: When fires, sinkings, a marina shed roof collapse or running up on a shoal damages your boat, you end up with a salvage situation. If the boat is not a total loss and needs to be recovered and brought to a repair facility, costs can escalate quickly. Most boaters assume the cost of raising or moving the boat to safe location is covered by their policy, but some marine insurers will subtract salvage costs from the insured value of the boat, reducing the funds available to repair the boat or the amount paid in the event of a total loss. With some policies on a total loss you may receive a check for the boat’s insured value, but only get a small percentage of that insured value – perhaps just 5 to 10 percent – to pay for salvage costs, again forcing you to pay more out of pocket. Better policies provide salvage coverage that is separate but equal to the boat’s hull-value coverage. After all, isn’t that why you insure your boat in the first place?
5. The boat trailer fine print: Not all boat insurance policies automatically provide boat trailer coverage so be sure to check. Also find out if there are geographic limits on where you may trailer the boat. Note that if you have an accident while towing, it is your boat policy that pays to repair or replace the trailer, but any third-party damage your trailer causes to property or injuries to people is covered under your auto policy.
6. The liability-only boat policy fine print: If you opt for a liability-only policy, ensure that it provides not only coverage for property damage and bodily injury to others, but also that it provides coverage for salvage and removal of a wreck, and that separate coverage is available for fuel-spill incidents.
7. Not a coverage but a concern: Do you have the experience to be able to salvage your own boat? Most boaters do not, even for a simple salvage operation, let alone after a major catastrophe. Boaters deserve an insurance provider that can arrange for the salvage as quickly as possible, potentially negotiating with crane operators, truckers, storage facilities, local government officials, marina staff and more. The only way to find out if you’ll be left holding the bag or will get the help you need is to ask around for other boaters’ claims experiences.

The marine insurance specialists at BoatUS (800-283-2883) can help you review your current policy. Free quotes are available at BoatUS.com/insurance

Bagnell Dam Floodgates Closed........

On Saturday, the operators of the Bagnell Dam closed the dam's floodgates.  The floodgates had been open since May 8, as major flooding was occurring in the LOTO region.

Even after the rainfall had stopped, the dam operators left the floodgates open to pass on floodwaters from the swollen Truman Lake.

The closing of the Bagnell Dam floodgates has also caused a drop in the level of the Osage River, which as of Sunday evening, was at 568 feet, three feet lower than a week ago........

Note: The waters from Bagnell Dam flow into the Osage River, that flows into the Missouri River and finally into the Mississippi River below Alton, IL

Bull Shoals Lake Near Branson, Missouri

Woman's Body Recovered A Week After Flooding........

On Saturday, an angler in Bull Shoals Lake spotted a woman's body in the water that officials believe may be the third victim of a flash flooding incident in Branson, Missouri.

Officials in Taney County are still trying to identify the body, but they are thinking that it is likely that of 31 year old Whitney McDonald.  She was driving a vehicle carrying 4 other people that was swept away by floodwaters on May 27.

The bodies of 17 year old Kaliea Munn and 37 year old Antonio Finley were recovered the next day.  The victims were from Nashville, Arkansas who were in Branson for a basketball tournament........

What a great week on the river! It's ebbing and flowing as it should, as it wishes. The Mississippi shall and always will. Grafton Ferry is still closed due to a bit of water on the landing.. Logs floating. Whole trees rolling gently, silently down river with the current. Wild life is in full mode and Boaters fill the waterscape. Live music echoing off the water from Grafton..The Boathouse rocking and sandbar is a party as usual! And of course, my favorite, AWESOME SUNSETS!!

The Delta Queen

Historic Delta Queen Closer To Returning To The River........

The Delta Queen had been a fixture along the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers until 2008, when an exemption to the 1966 law prohibiting carrying more than 50 passengers if it is primarily made of wood expired.

Recently, the Delta Queen won an exemption from U.S. water safety standards in the U.S. Senate.  Now, a companion bill is working through the House of Representatives.

This legislation would grant the Delta Queen another exemption, if certain safety measures are implemented, including the installation of new boilers and generators, and the replacement of at least 10% of the vessel's flammable materials each year........

High Water Slows Barge Traffic........

Tom Russell with Russell Marine Group reports that last week's heavy rainfall has caused the rivers in the central United States to swell, which has led to barge traffic delays.

Russell says that the Illinois River is at or close to flood stage, and barge traffic is moving slowly.  He adds that tow sized have been reduced.

Last week, barge lines were reporting that extremely high water operating conditions were present along the Lower Mississippi River, and daylight-only transits were in force in a few areas........

This weekend is Lake Race at the Lake of the Ozarks, and in the high-powered Extreme Unlimited Class, four boats began the race, and through a war of attrition, only one finished.

CMS #3 and Wake Effects (the previous CMS boat) were the favorites to win the high powered catamaran class, but both sustained mechanical issues and were unable to complete the race.

The 2015 Lake Race winner, Cat Can Do/American Ethanol wasn't able to pull off the win, having to drop out on the last lap after developing mechanical issues.  Alex & Ani ended up finishing the final lap alone........

NMMA Summarizes 2016 Sales Increases........

The National Marine Manufacturers Association reports that during 2016, the retail unit sales of outboard, inboard and sterndrive boats increased by 6%, and corresponding dollars rose by 8 percent.

Pontoon boat sales during 2016 increased by 5 percent, and saltwater fishing boat sales rose by 7 percent.  Unit sales of inboard boats rose for the fifth consecutive year, mainly due to double-digit increases in ski and wakeboard boat unit sales.

The retail sales of sterndrive boats continued to slump, however, the rate of decrease seems to have slowed, with unit sales being down 3.2% to 12,200 vessels.  43.4% of the sterndrive boats sold during 2016 were runabout bowriders........

Boating News From Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina

Three People Injured In Boat Explosion After Misfueling........

Late Friday afternoon, three people were injured when a boat exploded in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.  According to NC Wildlife Resource Commission Master Officer Scott Pritchard, the victims were boat owner/operator David Richard Martin, Jr., Jonathan Leslie Bickett, and Sea Tow Employee Kendrick Stanley Schwartz.

Pritchard said that Martin and Bickett were fueling the boat, however, instead of filling the gas tank, they pumped 28 gallons of fuel into a fishing rod holder.  Witness Jeff Williamson says he warned the men prior to the explosion.  He had spotted a sheen on the water, figured they had misfueled, and warned the men to have the vessel towed to the marina.

When Sea Tow's Schwartz arrived, he advised the men to disconnect the battery cables to prevent a spark from igniting the fuel.  As the cables were being unhooked, a spark ignited the fuel and caused an explosion.  A nearby fishing center and restaurant were evacuated, and the fire was quickly extinguished.  Martin and Bickett were air lifted to a burn center, and Schwartz was taken to a hospital........

Lake Of The Ozarks

45 Foot Cruiser Submerged At 16 Mile Marker....  Marked With Buoys....

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that on Friday, a 45 foot cruiser sank in the main channel of the Lake of the Ozarks, near the LOTO Community Toll Bridge.

32 year old Joseph Krieger was piloting a 45 foot Silverton Cruiser near the 17.5 Mile Marker when a "mechanical failure" caused the vessel to sink.  The boaters aboard were able to safely get off the boat.

Lake Tow was able to tow the swamped Silverton nearer to shore along the main channel, where it will be refloated and removed from the lake.  The vessel is marked with four buoys, but boaters are advised to avoid the sunken boat........
