Downtown Alton Businesses Recuperating From Flooding........

Morrison's Irish pub was closed for nine days following this last round of flooding.  The business, located adjacent to the Great River Road in Downtown Alton, was surrounded by water.

Thanks to the efforts of pub employees and Alton city workers, the pub did not sustain any damage to the main floor.  Crews had up to seven pumps running at one time, and were manning the pumps around the clock.

Water did get up to the the main floor trusses, and after an inspection from the health department, Morrison's was able to reopen on May 17.  Friday night, they hosted a little flood party........

Illinois Bringing Alligator Gar Back........

The State of Illinois is working on reintroducing the locally extinct alligator gar to waterways across the state.  The alligator gar was once found within Illinois waters, but was wiped out.  The last recorded catch of an alligator gar in Illinois waters was in 1966.

According to Dan Stephenson, chief of fisheries for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, his division received alligator gar fry from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.  The fry are raised in hatcheries, and then released.

Back in 2009, the Illinois DNR started restocking alligator gar before taking several years off.  They resumed their efforts last year, stocking some 1,600 alligator gars.  Illinois received this years supply of of alligator gars in May, and will raise them until September, when they'll be released........

Barges Strike Champ Clark Bridge.... Wedge Under Train Bridge....

Early Friday morning, a tow struck the Champ Clark Bridge spanning the Mississippi River at Louisiana, Missouri.  Two of the barges ended up wedged below the nearby rail bridge.

Lieutenant Sean Haley of the U.S. Coast Guard Upper Mississippi Sector reports that Ingram Marine was pushing a tow of 15 barges downstream.  Just before 6 am, the tow struck the Champ Clark Bridge.

Five barges broke free of the tow, and three have been recovered.  Ingram Marine crews were working to free the remaining two barges from the rail bridge........

Flooding News

Expert:  Levees Contribute To Record Floods........

Flooding typically begins with rainfall, which no one can control.  Some experts, however, are saying that rainfall combines with overbuilt levees are causing the record flooding in the St. Louis Metropolitan Region.

Bob Criss, a professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Washington University says that the St. Louis Region has too many levees, some of which are overbuilt, and too close to the water.

David Stokes with the Great Rivers Habitat Alliance says that these levees might protect some areas, but they essentially move the flood plain elsewhere........

Business May Not Reopen After Flood........

While Scott Coleman, owner of Some Other Place Bar and Grill, has rebuilt following flooding in the past, this time around, he is saying that it is out of his control.

Some Other Place Bar and Grill has been closed since it was flooded out earlier this month, and while the water is gone, the project is on hold.  Coleman says that they are waiting for a Jefferson County official to come out to give them the go-ahead to rebuild.

Coleman reports that the only damage his business sustained was to the ceiling.  He said that he went ahead and replaced the insulation and duct work that got wet........

Missouri State Highway Patrol

News Release.......

EMPHASIS: Troop G Advisory For Waterways

Captain Mark G. Inman, commanding officer Troop G, Willow Springs, would like to caution the public: Recent flooding may impact recreational water activities over the upcoming Memorial Day holiday. The flooding has caused damage to many rivers and facilities in the Troop G area. Additionally, some canoe outfitters are conducting cleanup operations and recovering from the high water. Downed trees obstruct many of the rivers as well as the accesses. The Ozarks National Scenic Riverways is reporting portions of the Current and Jacks Fork rivers are closed to public use. While this situation could change, boaters should try to educate themselves regarding these conditions and what recreational opportunities remain available, and plan accordingly.

“The flooding has made some of our waterways dangerous,” said Captain Inman. “Visiting a website or making a phone call could make a big difference in planning a safe, successful holiday outing.”

For the most up-to-date information about river closures and closures due to flood damage, please visit the National Park Service website at www.nps.gov/ozar/ or call the park headquarters at 573-323-4236.

Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others: Share the waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Wear It!!

Nautical Legislation

Senate Panel Advances Bills Beneficial to Boating, Fishing Industries........

On Thursday, three bills that would be beneficial to the boating and fishing industries advanced in the U.S. Senate.  The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee approved the Coast Guard Reauthorization Act of 2017, the Billfish Conservation Act, and the Small Shipyards and Maritime Communities Act.

The Coast Guard Reauthorization Act authorizes Coast Guard funding for fiscal 2018, and possibly fiscal 2019.  The National Marine Manufacturers Association supports several safety and boating provisions in the bill.  Opponents, however, say the bill would weaken protections against the spread of invasive species and ballast discharge.

Reportedly, S.1129 contains provisions that transfer the control of ballast water from the Environmental Protection Agency to the Coast Guard.  While there are disagreements about provisions related to the Vessel Incidental Discharge Act, committee members are confident they can work out a compromise........

However the restrooms will NOT be in service this weekend. Please be courteous to our neighbor as we will be driving thru their marina so keep your speed to a minimum. Longshot Saloon will be open both Saturday and Sunday. We appreciate all your patience at this difficult time.

Champ Clark Bridge Closing For Annual Inspection........

Beginning on Monday, June 12, the Champ Clark Bridge, which carries U.S. 54 over the Mississippi River at Louisiana, Missouri, will be closed for it's annual inspection

The span will be closed daily from 9 am to 4 pm Monday, June 12th through Thursday, June 15th, weather permitting.  In case of inclement weather, the bridge will be reopened over the weekend, then closed the following week.

Crews will be using two "Snooper" trucks to inspect the lower portions of the bridge.  Brian Haeffner, Missouri Department of Transportation area engineer says that they don't anticipate additional closures of the bridge, there is a possibility that the inspection may reveal issues that need to be immediately addressed........

Boat Gas News

BoatUS Takes Exception To Pro-Ethanol Campaign........

BoatUS is criticizing an advertising campaign put out by the Renewable Fuels Association that promotes the use of gasoline that contains 10 percent ethanol in boat engines.

According to BoatUS, the RFA is spreading mistruths in support of the Renewable Fuel Standard, a 2005 federal mandate requiring the blending of biofuels such as ethanol into the nation's gasoline supply.

Reportedly, a two page RFA ad appears in the May-June issue of Marina Dock Age, and claims that 10% ethanol blends are becoming the fuel of choice of savvy boaters.  BoatUS says that even though E10 is the most commonly sold fuel in the U.S, it is not the choice recreational boaters prefer.........

MDC's Free Fishing Days Next Month........

The Missouri Department of Conservation is giving people the chance to get hooked on fishing during next month's Free Fishing Days.  On June 10 and 11, anyone can fish in Missouri without having to purchase a fishing permit, trout permit, or trout park daily tag.

Even though there is no need for a fishing permit for the Free Fishing Days event, other regulations such as size limits and number of fish an angler may keep will still be in effect.  Trespass laws will remain in effect on private property, and special permits may be required at certain locations.

Missouri has more than a million acres of surface water, and the majority of it offers great fishing.  There are over 200 species of fish in Missouri, and better than 20 of them are game fish.......

Fishy Tales From Grand Rapids, Minnesota

Man Reels In Shark Jaws From The Mississippi River........

Recently, a Minnesota man who was fishing on the Mississippi River reeled in a bit of an odd catch for Minnesota; the jawbone of a shark.

59 year old Joe Piskel caught the jaws near Grand Rapids.  He and his 32 year old son, Joey, took the jaws to a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources office, where they were identified as belonging to a sand tiger shark.

DNR information officer Cheri Zeppelin says that they can't speculate how the jaws got there, but it is unlikely that they got there on their own.  Sand tiger sharks are not able to survive in fresh water, and the dams downstream don't allow for that kind of fish passage........

Zipline Returning To Godfrey........

The Village of Godfrey recently green-lit the hiring of an inspector to re-certify their zip line.  The zip line at Glazebrook Park was shut down a few years ago after the State of Illinois changed the rules for certifying that type of equipment.

Godfrey Park and Recreation Director Kimberly Caughran said that in order to operate the zip line, a licensed structural engineer must certify the line itself and the platform as well.

It will cost just under $5,000 to have Structures StL certify the zip line.  Caughran said the zip line had been in operation from 2009 through 2014, and generated about $6,000 per year........

News Release From BoatUS

High Water on the Great Lakes: Boom or Bust for Boaters?

BoatUS offers safety tips

SODUS BAY, NY, May 18, 2017 – With Great Lakes water levels on the rise and expected to continue to increase into summer, recreational boaters could find that deeper water under the keel may open a whole new range of cruising, fishing or sailing grounds to navigation. That same deep water, however, may present unique safety concerns on the water and at the dock, says Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS), the nation’s largest advocacy, services and safety organization.

According to the US Army Corps of Engineers, Lake Ontario is expected to see the largest increase at 17 inches higher over last year and lowland flooding is already hampering the boat-launch season on the lake. The second largest year-over-year increase goes to Lake Superior at 12 inches higher sometime in August, while Lake Huron and Lake Michigan are both predicted to rise 8 inches. Lake Erie is expected to be up 5 inches over last year.

BoatUS offer the following tips for boaters on the Great Lakes in these flooded conditions:

On the water: The good news is that deeper draft vessels may have more options for mooring, anchoring and slip rental, as well as increased access to the water. However, high water shifts sandbars. Traveling at slower speed can reduce the risk of grounding or running gear damage. Transient boaters can contact local TowBoatUS operators on VHF channel 16 for local information. In you’re headed into unfamiliar waters post an extra lookout, and if you’re traveling far, check ahead as locations to tie up may be inaccessible.

On the dock: Many fixed (non-floating), boat docks with electrical service are submerged, potentially compromising wiring and electrical connections. When waters recede and before power gets turned on, inspect the electrical service and consider installing a ground fault protection device if your dock power system does not already have one. Without it, the risk of Electric Shock Drowning (ESD) increases. A dock electrical maintenance check-up is also a good idea to schedule at the beginning of the each season

Mississippi River Levees

Mo. Attorney General Opposes Overbuilt Levees........

Last week, Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley penned a letter to Loren Wobig, an Office of Water Resources executive with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources stating he was concerned that proposed levee rules would retroactively absolve Illinois levee districts that have illegally raised their levees, allowing them to raise the levees to unlimited heights.

Hawley wrote that the proposed amendments would effectively "grandfather" previously overbuilt floodwalls and levees, as well as exempting certain overbuilt structures from future regulatory oversight.  He added that the proposed changes will reward past misconduct, hinder efforts to bring overbuilt levees into compliance and pose a threat to Missouri and Illinois communities.

Levee district opponents, many of whom farm and live in areas with lower levee levels, are concerned that the illegally raised levees will cause worse flooding in their communities.  Since the levee districts are basically fencing off the floodplains, water remains in the main channel of the river, forcing it to rise elsewhere........

Mark Twain Riverboat Returning Home........

On Thursday, the Mark Twain Riverboat will be returning to it's "home" along the Hannibal riverfront next to it's gift shop, which is typically moored adjacent to the Hannibal Marina.

The Mark Twain has started it's 2017 cruising season docking at Glascock's Landing, while the gift shop was having maintenance performed on it's hull.

After the work was completed, the gift shop returned to the Hannibal riverfront on Tuesday evening.  Since it was dark out, the gift shop could not be completely moored.  After Wednesday's cruise, riverboat personnel were planning on finishing up their work at the gift shop........

News Release.......

Troop B To Perform Boat Safety Inspections

Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, announces Troop B marine operations troopers will conduct courtesy boat inspections on Mark Twain Lake and the Mississippi River as a part of National Safe Boating Week. National Safe Boating Week will take place from May 20, 2017, through May 26, 2017, to promote safe boat operation during the kick-off to the upcoming boating season.

Troopers will conduct courtesy boat inspections from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at both the Ray Behrens Boat Ramp on Mark Twain Lake and the Hannibal Marina Boat Ramp on the Mississippi River. The goal of the boat inspection stations is to verify boaters have the required equipment on board their boat, provide a Patrol boat inspection sticker if the boater is in compliance, and to answer boating questions. There is no cost for those participating.

“The boating season is upon us and the Patrol is dedicated to promoting safety on our waterways,” stated Captain Wilt. “The upcoming boat inspections are a great way to insure you will be safe while enjoying the many lakes and rivers in our area.”
Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others: Share the waterway and use common sense, good judgement, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Wear It!!

Black Bass Seasons Open Memorial Day weekend

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Memorial Day weekend brings an extra-special celebration for squirrel hunters and bass anglers in Missouri. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reminds them that the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, May 27, marks the opening of both squirrel season statewide and catch-and-keep bass season in most streams south of the Missouri River.

BLACK BASS

The black bass catch-and-keep season applies to most streams south of the Missouri River for largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted or Kentucky bass and runs from May 27 to Feb. 28, 2018. Anglers may catch and release these species legally all year, anywhere in the state. They may keep legal-sized bass caught from impoundments and some rivers and streams all year long, statewide. In most of the state's waters, the daily limit on black bass is six. Black bass taken from rivers and streams must be at least 12 inches long in most areas. Additional specific regulations may apply to specific waters or areas. Anglers must have a valid fishing permit or be exempt.

Get more information on bass fishing from MDC's 2017 Summary of Missouri Fishing Regulations, available where permits are sold, or online at huntfish.mdc.mo.gov/fishing/species/black-bass.

Body Of Missing Woman Recovered From The River........

On Saturday, barge workers spotted a body floating in the Mississippi River near the foot of Gasconade Street.  Responders with the St. Louis Fire Department recovered the body of a woman from the river around 12:15 am.

The St. Louis Police notified Madison County Police Chief Chris Burns that they had recovered a body matching the description of a woman who had been missing since March 30.  20 year old Gift Kamau had been reported missing, and her car had been found in Madison County, near the Chain of Rocks Bridge.

The St. Louis Medical Examiner's Office identified her through dental records.  It is believed that Kamau committed suicide, as a note was discovered.  Surveillance video showed Kamau walking across the Chain of Rocks Bridge around mid-day on April 30.  Tracking dogs had lost her scent at the bridge........

Baldwin Lake Near Baldwin, Illinois

Man Drowns After Boat Capsized....  Got Caught In Fishing Gear....

On Wednesday, waves and high winds capsized a fishing boat on Baldwin Lake.  48 year old Lonnie Smith stayed in the water to attempt to right the vessel, and sent the boat's other two occupants to shore.

St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye says that Smith got his legs caught up in his fishing gear, and as the boat filled with water, he was dragged down, even though he was wearing a life jacket.

Illinois Conservation Police Sergeant Eric Manker said that when there are heavy winds on a wide open lake, waves can grow to 3 to 4 feet high.  Manker added that no one should have been on the lake in a boat........

Boating Safety

Safe Boating Week Begins Saturday........

On Saturday, the annual National Safe Boating Week safety campaign will begin, and Coast Guard units and Auxiliary floatillas across the nation will be hosting events to highlight the importance of boating safety.

Saturday will also be the Ready, Set, Wear It! Life Jacket World Record Day, where thousands of people across the globe will try to set the world record for the most life jackets worn, and inflatable life jackets inflated on one day in order to bring awareness to the importance of wearing life jackets.

Mike Baron, recreational boating safety specialist for the Ninth Coast Guard District says that like wearing a seatbelt, putting on a life jacket during or after an accident occurs is too late.  Baron adds that this is the reason they encourage wearing life jackets while on the water........

Missouri State Highway Patrol

News Release

Troop D Prepares For Memorial Day Highway And Waterway Traffic

Captain Juan Villanueva, commanding officer Troop D, Springfield, announces that Troop D will be participating in enforcement operations throughout the Memorial Day weekend. The objective of these operations is to promote safety and reduce traffic crashes. Throughout the holiday weekend, troopers within Troop D and throughout the state will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness & Reduction Effort). In addition to Operation C.A.R.E., Troop D will participate in a special enforcement operation during the peak travel periods on Friday, May 26, and Monday, May 29. During this operation, Troop D troopers will be assigned to 20-mile stretches of Interstate 44 to maximize visibility. Enforcement efforts on secondary roads within Troop D will be conducted during the same timeframe. Over the entire holiday weekend, troopers will be targeting all traffic violations and will be especially vigilant to excessive speed, careless and imprudent driving, and aggressive driving violations. Troopers also will be available to help motorists in need of assistance.

The only 100 percent survivable traffic crash is the one that never happens. Make sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Every day as we travel on Missouri’s roadways, we trust that every driver on the road is going to obey the speed limit, pay attention, and drive sober. “Don’t Violate The Trust.”

The Memorial Day weekend is also an unofficial start to the boating season. Boating is a great pastime and troopers want everyone to enjoy themselves in a safe manner. Troop D troopers will be targeting all boating violations and will be especially vigilant to careless watercraft operations throughout the entire holiday weekend. Never operate a boat while you are impaired; never ride with an impaired operator. Please be courteous to others on the water, wear a life jacket, and obey the law regarding safe operation of a vessel and no wake zones. Troopers will also be available to help boaters in need of assistance.

Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others: Share the waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Wear It!!

News Release From BoatUS

BoatUS Skewers Latest 'Big Ethanol' Effort to Support Government Ethanol Mandate

ALEXANDRIA, VA, May 16, 2017 –“Big Ethanol” is at it again. In a new advertising campaign timed with the start of boating season, the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA), the leading trade association for America’s ethanol industry, continues to spread mistruths in its support of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), a 2005 law that mandates the blending of biofuels such as corn-ethanol into our gasoline. The nation’s largest recreational boating advocacy, services and safety group Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) clarifies the ad campaign’s spin with hard truths.

SPIN: “E10 is the fuel of choice for many boaters because of its high performance and lower emissions.”
HARD TRUTH: E10 is simply the most common fuel sold in America today, but it is not recreational boaters’ preferred choice of fuel. According to those surveyed by BoatUS, 91 percent prefer non-ethanol fuel for their boats. Unfortunately, non-ethanol gas is facing more uncertainty as the government mandate to increase the volume of ethanol in the nation’s fuel supply may actually reduce the availability of ethanol-free gas. While ethanol boosts a fuel’s octane rating, the US Department of Energy acknowledges that ethanol contains less energy than gasoline and “result(s) in lower fuel economy.”
SPIN: E10 is the “preferred choice by professionals” with supporting quotes by the National Boat Racing Association and Crappie Masters.
HARD TRUTH: Both organizations are sponsored by the RFA.
SPIN: “Tip #1: Ensure a tight seal, if water is found, dry the tank before refueling.”
HARD TRUTH: This impractical and potentially very unsafe “tip” asks boaters with built-in fuel tanks to do the impossible. Removing and disposing of phase-separated fuel – a result of too much water in moisture-attracting ethanol fuels – can only be done safely by professionals and is expensive. Even for those with portable fuel tanks, this RFA spin offers no practical, reality-based solution to the challenging disposal issue of the ethanol-and-water soaked gas.
SPIN: “Regular maintenance is key.”
HARD TRUTH: It certainly is when it comes to ethanol! A 2016 survey by Boating Industry magazine points to ethanol as playing an even “bigger role” in boat service issues than it was the year prior, with 87 percent of survey respondents reporting seeing boat engine damage caused by ethanol. Said one boat manufacturer, “Ethanol is a boom for the service departments (and a) huge drag on our industry because it negatively affects the customers. It makes them hate boating. It ruins their day, their boat and their entire boating experience.”

Go to BoatUS.com/gov/rfs.asp for more information on the Renewable Fuel Standard. BoatUS is a member of the Smarter Fuel Future coalition.

River History....

May 17, 1849 in River History

A devastating fire destroyed a significant part of St. Louis and many of the steamboats on the St. Louis riverfront. This was the first fire in United States history in which it is known that a firefighter was killed in the line of duty.

The St. Louis Great Fire of 1849 was started on the evening of May 17, 1849 by a smoldering mattress aboard the steamboat White Cloud.  The fire quickly spread to an adjoining steamboat, the Edward Bates, which burnt free of her moorings located on what is now Laclede's Landing.  She drifted downriver, spreading fire as she went.  In a half an hours time, 23 steamboats were on fire.  The Great Fire would claim 418 buildings along 15 blocks...

Fire captain Thomas Targee sent orders for soldiers to use kegs of gunpowder to blow up buildings in order to create a fire-stop. His idea worked to an extent, but he was killed in one of the explosions.

The SS Admiral

The Day A Hammer Halted The Admiral........

The news along the St. Louis Riverfront was grim on May 16, 1979, as that was the day a Coast Guard inspector's hammer went right through the thin, corroded hull of the S.S. Admiral.  The owners announced that cruises would stop that year.

Tom Dunn with Streckfus Steamers Inc. said that the Admiral would be sent to New Orleans for repairs, which was the nearest location with a big enough dry dock large enough to handle the Admiral.

Dunn said that they would definitely get the Admiral fixed, since they would have the entire winter to make repairs.  After assessing the damage in New Orleans, Streckfus announced that the necessary repairs were unaffordable.  The Admiral would never cruise the Mississippi River again........

Additional Counties Added To Flood, Storm Damage Assessment List........

Missouri Governor Eric Greitens recently announced that the state will be adding another six counties to the list of those being assessed for damage related to the recent severe weather and subsequent flooding.

St. Louis, Perry and Franklin Counties will be undergoing preliminary damage surveys for aid to repair damage to public infrastructure such as roads, bridges and schools........

RiverBill,

Took these pics over the weekend. There were a lot of barges on the move and the upstream tows were making big waves pushing against the current. Had to dodge some big logs especially around Brussels Ferry. With water being up you can access some back water lakes that normally are too shallow. Great weekend on the River.

Illinois River Near Kampsville, Illinois

Goldenrod Preservation Efforts Hampered By Flooding........

The recent flooding along the Illinois River dealt another blow to the efforts to preserve the Goldenrod Showboat, as the vessel took on water and settled on the river bottom.

The Goldenrod is a National Historic Landmark that was launched in 1909.  She is one of the last showboats remaining from the Vaudeville era, hosting the likes of Bob Hope and Red Skelton.

Jake Medford, president of the Historic Riverboat Preservation Association says that reports stating the Goldenrod did not survive are a bit overblown.  He adds that it was flooded out on the interior side, with about eight feet against the hull.  Only a foot made it into the theater, which is the lowest point of the vessel........

Illinois River At Grafton, Illinois

Post-Flood Cleanup Continues ........

During the recent flooding, better than seven feet of water inundated portions of Grafton.  Now that the majority of the tourist town is dry, at least one business is looking at several weeks worth of cleanup.

Located along the edge of the Illinois River is the Hawg Pit Bar and Grill, which is known to flood. This year, however, wasn't a typical flood.  Co-owner and bartender Julie Hopper says that the flood was fast, dirty, and worse, as the water was nearly 7 feet high in the bar.

While boats are passing by where the Hawg Pit's parking lot is, cleanup has begun on the bar.  Later in the week, the health inspector will be checking out the bar.  It could take up to two weeks before the parking lot dries out........

News Release From BoatUS

ANNAPOLIS, Md., May 15, 2017 -The National Highway Traffic Safety Commission says that sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for five seconds. On waterways across the country, recreational boaters know that five seconds is a world of time to get into trouble. Unlike driving on a road, boats can approach from any direction, come in all shapes and sizes and move at different speeds. As part of National Safe Boating Week (May 20–26), the BoatUS Foundation urges boaters who bring smartphones aboard to be aware of the risk of distracted boating.

Good news/bad news: “Cellphones are the primary communication device for many boaters,” said BoatUS Foundation Assistant Director of Boating Safety Ted Sensenbrenner. “So while they’re important to all of us, we have to know how to use them wisely. If you’re texting from the helm, you’re likely not helming the boat.”

The stress of it all: Adding to the challenge and unlike automobiles, says Sensenbrenner, is boating’s unique stressors of sun, glare, wind, waves and vibration. Research shows that hours of exposure to these boating stressors produces a kind of a fatigue, or "boater's hypnosis" which slows reaction time almost as much as if you were legally drunk. Adding alcohol multiplies the accident risk.

4 tips to improve situational awareness: Cell phones, alcohol and other factors can hinder knowing what’s going on around you, or your “situational awareness.” Sensenbrenner says boaters can always improve their situational awareness by: 1. not texting while driving, 2. slowing down, 3. posting extra lookouts, and 4. waiting for your safe return ashore before enjoying alcohol.

If you’d like to learn more about safe, smart and clean boating, go to BoatUS.org.

Missouri Flood Aftermath

Flood Resource Centers Opened In The Region........

Flood victims in Missouri are still working on cleaning up following historic flooding earlier in the month, and this week, there will be some help available to them.

The Missouri State Emergency Management Agency set up a few resource centers in the area to help flood victims out.  These centers are one stop shops, with information about housing, insurance, and mental health counseling.

There will be three resource centers in the region this week:

○  Monday in Pacific at Pacific Eagles

○  Tuesday in House Springs at Northwest Valley Middle School

○  Thursday in Arnold at Arnold First Baptist Church

The Resource Centers will be open from 11 am to 7 pm.

Meramec River Near St. Clair, Missouri

Removal Of Washed Out Bridge May Be Tricky........

Crews in Franklin County are going to be heading out for a fishing expedition along the Meramec River in order to remove the remains of the Bruns Bridge from the river after it was destroyed by flooding on May 1.

The span near St. Clair broke loose from it's footings, sank into the river, and came to rest against the current Mill Hill Road Bridge, where it has remained.

According to County Highway Administrator Ron Williams, removing the span might not be easy.  He adds that it appears the span split in half, one resting on a pier on the eastern end, the other on the west side........

Personal Signalling Device (PSD) for Watersports Safety -- DownAlert PSD™️

DownAlert PSD™ Puts Increased Visibility and Safety at Your Fingertips.

DownAlert PSD™ solves the problem of leaving watersports participants alone in the water without a visual alert or signaling device.

DownAlert PSD’s™ patent pending design provides a highly visible alert to signal boaters that a person is down and a potential hazard is in the water, alerting boaters to avoid the area. DownAlert PSD™ puts increased visibility and safety at the fingertips of the wearer down in the busy waters. DownAlert PSD™ is light, compact, easy to use, and will not interfere with watersports activities. Every skier, tuber, wake
boarder, and watersports participant should wear DownAlert PSD™ while playing on busy waterways and it should be part of every recreational boater’s towable watersports safety protocol.

Illinois River Near Peoria, Illinois

Angler Drowns After Canoe Capsizes........

Saturday night, an angler died on the Illinois River after his canoe capsized, and a friend was unable to save him.  24 year old Zachary Mayfield was pronounced dead shortly past 8:30 am Sunday morning.

Reportedly, Mayfield and a friend were fishing without lifejackets, when one of them stood up, causing the canoe to capsize, and dumping Mayfield into the river.

The friend tried to hold onto Mayfield, but wasn't able to.  He swam to shore and alerted authorities.  The Spring Bay Fire Department and the Peoria Fire Department turned out to the river to search for Mayfield.  Peoria divers recovered Mayfield with the help of the Illinois Conservation Police's sonar system........

Pilot Project Keeping Water Out Of Combined Sewer System........

Since October, a pilot project has kept some 600,000 gallons of rainwater from flowing into the combined sewer system of Peoria, Illinois.

Peoria's two block long Adams Street project utilizes rain gardens, permeable pavers and other methods to retain water.  Since October 22, the system has diverted 638,000 gallons of water.

One rainstorm can push 32 million gallons of water into the combined sewer system, which feeds into the city's treatment plant, and then the Illinois River.  The system is overloaded by rainwater 25 to 30 times per year, and each time, untreated sewage is released into the river........

Volunteers Sought For Hawg Pit Cleanup........

As the Hawg Pit BBQ Barn is preparing to reopen after being inundated by flood waters, owner Steve "Quincy" Kasten says that they are looking for volunteers to help out with cleaning.

Volunteers started cleaning Saturday morning, and the work will continue throughout the week.

Kasten said that he had several days to prepare for the flooding.  He adds that as the rain kept falling, and the water kept rising, he knew that he needed to evacuate.

Since the Hawg Pit sits in the lowest part of Grafton, it is the first to take on water during a flood, and it is the last place the water recedes from.  This round of flooding left about three feet of water inside the building........

Vietnam Vet Paddling River For Gold Star Families........

45 years ago, Vietnam Veteran Jim Crigler met his first Gold Star Family when his good friend and fellow pilot lost his life.  Crigler says that he had the honor, and burden, of escorting his friend home 45 years ago this month.

The Vietnam War was a poorly accepted war in the public eye, and Crigler says that many of the Gold Star Families did not get the recognition they deserved.  He adds that for 45 years, those families have kind of had to live with that grief alone.

Crigler is getting prepared for a canoe trip down the Mississippi River to bring attention to the Gold Star Families, and their struggles........

The American Duchess is slated to be christened on August 13, 2017, and will set sail on the 14th.  The all-suite 166 passenger American Duchess is the first purpose built boutique paddle wheeler offering passengers the largest suites on the Mississippi River.

American Queen Steamboat Company President and CEO Ted Sykes says that over the past two seasons, demand has been overwhelming for Mississippi River cruises, and they look forward to meeting that demand with two riverboats cruising between New Orleans and St. Paul........

HWY. 94 UPDATE

ALL SECTIONS OF HWY. 94 ARE NOW OPEN THROUGH WEST ALTON!!!

MODOT just completed removing barricades from Hwy. 94.

You will need to use caution directly on Hwy. 94 at the Harbor Point corner, there is still standing water on each side of the corner. The water on the inside corner will probably be there until tomorrow. The small section is marked going both directions.
Dwiggins Rd. Is still covered. That area still needs to drain into the lake and ultimately into the river.
