City Begins Flood Clean-Up Process........

The floodwaters around Grafton are receding, but things have a way to go before returning to normal, as water inundated buildings and stalled business, even for businesses that stayed dry.

Jamie Clayton, president of the Grafton Chamber of Commerce said that losing the beginning of the tourism season is a blow not only to local merchants, but the city government that relies on tax revenues.

Businesses that weren't hit by floodwaters like Aerie's Winery say business fall off.  Owner Jeff Lorton said they fared better than most places because Aerie's Winery was still accessible, but they were down about 40%........

The Goldenrod Showboat

Long Closed Goldenrod Takes On 7 - 8 Feet Of Water........

The 108 year old Goldenrod Showboat had been shut down since 2001, and in storage along the Illinois River north of Kampsville since 2003.

Back in 2015, engineers concluded that the long-closed Goldenrod was beyond saving.  She was moved approximately 500 feet in an effort to prevent further damage, but that inadvertently caused the hull to buckle, leaving the it irreparable.

Since that time, a group has been trying to preserve items from the interior of the vessel for use in a riverboat museum.

Jake Medford, vice president of the non-profit Historic Riverboat Preservation Association said that the latest indignity the Goldenrod has endured is that she has taken on 7 - 8 feet of water.  On Tuesday, Medford said that the Association had completed their preservation efforts prior to the vessel's partial submerging.........

Illinois Discusses Plans For Reintroduction Of Alligator Gar........

Officials in Illinois recently released detailed plans describing how they intend to reintroduce the alligator gar back into Illinois waterways.

On Monday, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources announced that they have released a management plan for alligator gar, which was thought to be extinct from the state's waters, including goals and objectives.

Back in the fall, crews stocked some 1,600 alligator gar.  Biologists in several states have been restocking the gar, and hopes are high that it could be a weapon against the invasive Asian carp........

Goldenrod Showboat

Preservation Effort....

The Goldenrod Showboat was debuted as the largest showboat ever built when she came onto the scene in 1909. She was a vessel of pure decadence fitted with brilliant decor and lighting for which no expense was spared. The music of her calliope would signal her long awaited arrival as she traveled from Omaha all the way south to New Orleans. She would offer small towns the access to melodramas, vaudeville, music, dance, and in some instances,” talkies” that would have otherwise been out of reach. When the Goldenrod settled in St. Louis, she transitioned from a traveling attraction into a popular travel destination, becoming a mainstay in local entertainment for music and theater lovers alike.

Meramec River Near Valley Park, Missouri

Could Landfill Mountain Be Responsible For Changing Flood Patterns?

While looking at the consequences of the levee system along the Meramec River, Washington University Professor Dr. Robert Criss noticed that a landfill is partially located on a federally designated floodway.

Criss was studying maps when he spotted something rising out of the Meramec River floodwaters like a mountain near 141 and Interstate 44.  It was the Peerless Park Landfill, located on the site of the former I-44 Drive In movie theater.

Criss located a 1995 FEMA map of the region, and penciled in the area occupied by the landfill.  He found that the landfill is located halfway in the floodway.  Criss questions who would authorize building a mountain in a floodway.  Apparently, a newer FEMA map has had the floodway line drawn around the landfill........

Flooding Concerns Residents Near Proposed Mine........

Even as the waters of the Meramec River are receding, some residents along the river in Franklin County are concerned about a new proposed mine.

The proposed site of the new mine in located just outside St. Clair, and during the recent floods, the location was under several feet of water.

Opponents of the proposed gravel mine say that during future floods, hazardous materials such as fuel and oil could be washed into the river.  The Franklin County floodplain manager said that the proposal meets federal floodplain standards........

ST. LOUIS – The Coast Guard reopened the Upper Mississippi River near St. Louis, Monday.

Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River reopened the Upper Mississippi River from mile marker 185.4 to mile marker 179 with restrictions in place until the river returns to normal levels.

“Although the river is reopened to vessel traffic, the water levels are still unusually high and carry additional associated risks. Mariners should proceed with extreme caution as they resume their operations,” said Capt. Martin Malloy, commander, Sector Upper Mississippi River.

Mariners are urged to operate in accordance with Coast Guard issued Broadcast Notice to Mariners and the appropriate Waterways Action Plan.

A Broadcast Notice to Mariners and a Waterways Action Plan is available at: http://homeport.uscg.mil/umr

Crews Working To Get Alton Back To Normal........

The spring flood of 2017 is in the books, and on Monday, Alton and Illinois state crews began working to return Downtown Alton back to normal.  This involves cleaning up mud and removing water barriers.

Chief Bernie Sebold of the Alton Fire Department said that crews were removing the concrete barriers and the Muscle Wall, and Ardent Mills were removing their sandbags.  The Illinois Department of Transportation will then clean up the streets with the street sweeper.

After cleaning, IDOT inspected the roadways prior to reopening them to traffic Monday afternoon.  While the Argosy Casino reopened on Saturday, the Alton Marina, however, remains closed........

News Release

The North American Safe Boating Campaign wants to get something off its chest and onto yours.

A LIFE JACKET!

Life jackets can be the determining factor between life and death in many boating safety accidents. Each year, on average, 700 people die in boating-related accidents, 8 out of every 10 victims were not wearing a life jacket. According to Virgil Chambers, Executive Director of the National Safe Boating Council, "Thousands of people would be alive today had they taken the simple precaution of wearing a life jacket when they went out on the water."
We will again stress the importance of wearing life jackets. The Coast Guard has a goal to eliminate deaths, injuries and property damage associated with recreational boating. The Coast Guard and its partners are committed to a Safe Boating Campaign that reaches from shore to shore across the North America Continent. Our neighbors to the north, the Canadian Safe Boating Council and the Canadian Coast Guard will also observe Safe Boating Week on May 20 - May 26, 2017. Boating smart is an essential part of any day on the water regardless of where you boat.
For more information about the services provided by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, call 314-607-2069 or
visit us online at http://a0850304.uscgaux.info/

The Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed civilian component of the U.S. Coast Guard and supports the Coast Guard in nearly all mission areas. The Auxiliary was created by Congress in 1939. For more information, please visit www.cgaux.org

National Safe Boating Week runs from May 20 to May 26, 2017. This campaign is designed to help save lives by encouraging everyone to wear their lifejackets when boating. Boaters include those with fishing boats, runabouts, cruisers, personal water craft (PWC), pontoon boats, canoes, paddle boards and kayaks.

Life jackets save lives. Statics show that 76% of all fatal boating accident victims drowned. Of those, 85% were NOT wearing a life jacket.

Illinois River Near Kampsville, Illinois

The Goldenrod Showboat Sank With The Floods........

After nearly a century on the water, the Goldenrod Showboat was not able to fend off the rising Illinois River.  The Goldenrod is laying along the bank of the Illinois River a few miles upstream of Kampsville.

Jacob Medford, Vice President with the Historic Riverboat Preservation Association, the pumps aboard the Goldenrod broke down last month, and they haven't had the opportunity to get them running again.

Currently, there are around eight feet of water on the boat right now, and crew members are trying to determine what is still salvageable.  HRPA members will be back out to the Goldenrod with pumps to get rid of some of the water........

Congratulations to Murphysboro angler Louis Glidewell, who caught this 77.55-lb. flathead catfish on Friday, 5/5 in the flooded Big Muddy River. That's four pounds short of the state record. The big flathead also provided us a look at its latest meal, a nearly 2 lb. freshwater drum. (Flathead was released after weighing).

Mississippi River At St. Louis

Officials Look To Other River Towns For STL Riverfront Development Ideas........

Officials in St. Louis are trying to give the St. Louis riverfront a boost.  They spent $31 million to raise over a mile of the riverfront by several feet, meaning less flooding, and more days for more activities.

People to the north and south of the Gateway Arch Grounds don't believe that they will reap the benefits from the plan.  These areas are populated with boarded up buildings that have been neglected for years.

St. Louis City officials looked at a number of riverfront city redevelopment plans, including Cincinnati, Ohio and Covington, Kentucky........

River Closure Puts SEMO Port At A Standstill........

With the Mississippi River in southeastern Missouri is still running high, and river traffic shut down, the businesses located at the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority are standing idle.

As of Monday, the Mississippi River is closed to river traffic between Chester and Cairo, Illinois.  According to Dan Overbey, the executive director of the SEMO Port Authority, they are keeping tabs on the river levels, and are hoping to see traffic resume on the river either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Overbey said that while many businesses are at a standstill, grain sellers are still capable of doing some business.  Other businesses can store items until the river levels fall.  He adds that these businesses anticipate being closed some number of days on account of the river........

Riverbend Flooding Update........

Even as the floodwaters are starting to slowly recede around the Riverbend, creeks and rivers are still running high, and there are several road closures still in place.

The Great River Road, Illinois Route 100, is still closed between U.S. 67 in Alton all the way to the town of Pearl in Pike County.  Illinois Route 3 at Illinois Route 100 in Grafton is still flooded, and remains closed.

U.S. 67 into Missouri via the Clark Bridge is still passable, however, southbound traffic has been shifted to the upper lanes, and has been reduced to only one lane in each direction.........

Flooding Opinions

Corps Needs To Fix Flooding Issues........

After watching the Meramec River flood Eureka, Valley Park, Arnold, and other locations, the question arises about what the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is doing about the situation.

Flooding occurred in these regions 15 months ago, causing the same problems for residents and businesses.  Roadways, businesses, and schools are shut down, causing inconvenience and lost wages.

The Corps is a federal agency that caused a problem, perhaps they should fix it........

How We Can Better Protect Our Great River

Monday at 7:30 PM - 9 PM

The Old Bakery Beer Company
400 Landmarks Blvd, Alton, Illinois 62002

Come to the Old Bakery Beer Company for our Speaker’s Series on May 8th, 2017 to discuss one of the largest threats to the Mississippi River and ways you can help. Piasa Palisades Group has a legacy of defending the Mississippi River with over forty years of trash cleanups, fighting point-source polluters, hosting a decade of Mississippi Earthtones Festivals and most recently partnering with 1 Mississippi and Alton Mayor, Brant Walker, in passing a proclamation that endorses policies that preserve our River and its floodplain. Additionally, Mayor Walker encouraged Altonians to join nearly 20,000 River Citizens and the 1 Mississippi campaign to protect our greatest national treasure, the Mississippi River. 1 Mississippi was established in 2009 to organize people dedicated to protecting the Mississippi River into a national constituency of River Citizens.
River Citizens live in all 50 states, take simple actions to improve the River and advocate for River protections to local and national decision makers. Due to the valiant efforts of the Piasa Palisades Group’s Three Rivers Project, 1 Mississippi, and other partner organizations, the Mississippi has improved greatly over the past several decades; however, agricultural pollution is one of the biggest obstacles to a healthy River. While we often cannot see agricultural pollution traveling down the River, we can see its effects, including algal blooms, damaged ecosystems, and the Dead Zone in the Gulf of Mexico. Join us for a forum about this serious threat to our mighty Mississippi, featuring a slideshow presentation, short documentary, group activities, and meaningful discussion. Additionally, attendees will learn how to make their voices heard and will have the option to perform an action before leaving the event. You will leave knowing you have made a difference.

Attendees and friends are invited to have dinner and meet the speaker at the Old Bakery Beer Company, 400 Landmarks Blvd., Alton, Il 62002 starting at 6:00 p.m. The program will begin at 7:30 PM; in the event room, adjacent to the dining room. Heya Bill,

Water is on its way down, fell 6 inches just today.

Had a little water in my kitchen but rest of upstairs stayed dry.

Paddled through the marinas here in Portage, saw a few sunk boats, and a Dodge minivan. My wife and I thought about investing in a marina, but as they say "Mother Nature is a crappy business partner"!

Meramec River Flooding

Wetter Weather, River Constriction Causing More Major Floods........

In just 16 months time, residents along the Meramec River have prepared for, and dealt with 100 year floods that have caused damage, financial loss, and heartache.  As the Meramec River recedes, residents wonder when the next flood will arrive.

Bob Holmes, national flood coordinator for the U.S. Geological Survey says that while it isn't unheard of to have significant flooding events in close succession, some people believe that weather patterns and failed flood policies that constrict the river are causing more flooding.

Holmes adds that when people live in a flood plain, or places prone to flooding, they are gambling with the weather or the river.  He says that as we move toward a wetter weather cycle, flooding could occur more often........

Missouri River Near Labadie, Missouri

Concerns Raised About Flooding Near Coal Fired Power Plant........

The Labadie Environmental Organization has raised concerns that chemicals from coal ash is seeping into ground water around Amren's power plant along the Missouri River.

There is a dry landfill nearby that stores coal ash.  It is protected by a liner.  There are ponds on Amren's property that hold coal ash as well.

Patricia Schuba with the Labadie Environmental Organization says that they are worried about the integrity of the landfill and the ponds seeping into the river.  Schuba referred to testing conducted by Amren  that shows elevated levels of boron, arsenic and sulfates.

Ajay Arora, Vice President of Environmental Services asserts that there is no need for concern, as they have had an independent expert look at the effects of operations and drinking water. He adds that more testing will be conducted, and the results will be posted on Amren's website........

Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois

Communities Band Together For Flood Fight........

Alton's city workers are not the only ones keeping tabs on the floodwaters around the clock.  Alton business owners are as well, and fighting the creeping floodwaters.  The National Weather Service expected the Mississippi River to crest at 34.3 feet at the Melvin Price Lock and Dam No.26 Saturday morning, just above the major flood stage of 34 feet.

The owners of Morrison's Irish Pub are working to save their knotty pine flooring, which had to be sanded and refinished during the flood of 2015.  City workers are manning several pumps in the pub's basement to keep the water from reaching the main floor.  The pub has been closed since Sunday, and it's reopening will be dependant upon the floodwaters receding, and the clean-up.

Peter Allen, one of the owners of Grafton's The Loading Dock said that they have to transport employees in and out.  Since he didn't have a boat, Allen was using a forklift equipped with a manlift on the front.  While transporting three employees, the floodwaters got deeper than expected, causing the forklift to stall out.  Manager Ben DeCourcey ended up having to carry the ladies to solid ground........

Federal Disaster Assistance

Disaster Declaration Changes Proposed........

This week, local Congressmen Rodney Davis and Mike Bost called upon the U.S. House of Representatives to approve a bill that would ease the process for receiving federal disaster assistance for rural communities and states like Illinois.

After the flooding of 2015, there were several co0mmunities in Illinois that did not meet federal standards to receive millions of dollars in disaster relief.  Davis says legislation passed this week can change that.

Davis gave the example of severe weather that occurred back in 2012 that affected three states; both Missouri and Kentucky qualified for federal assistance, while Harrisburg, Illinois was denied, even though the damage was from the same storm.

The legislation passed the House unanimously, and is headed to the Senate for consideration........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

Alton Preparing For More Water........

As the Mississippi River steadily creeps toward an even greater crest at Alton, Illinois than was previously forecast for Saturday, crews installed a second wall, reinforced the first wall, and brought in more pumps.

On Thursday, Public Works crews brought in heavy grey concrete Jersey barriers to supplement the Muscle Wall installed on Tuesday.  Alton Public Works Director Bob Barnhart says that the forecast and recent rains prompted the decision to install the Jersey barriers.

Just before touring the flooded areas on Friday morning, Alton Mayor Brant Walker said that this flood is another top 10 flood, and so far, so good.  He adds that there are another six inches to go to reach the crest, but that is subject to change........

Tourism Not Adversely Affected By Flooding........

According to a spokesman with the Alton Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau, the local tourism industry has not been severely affected by the current round of flooding.

At this point, no events have been cancelled, as most locations hosting special events are still accessible.  Stephanie Tate says that the greatest impact might be the extra time necessary to reach your destination.

Tate said that there are many visitors that have traveled to town to watch the flooding Mississippi River lap against downtown buildings, quipping that people enjoy seeing the power and majesty of the river........

The Weekend Flood Outlook........

The National Weather Service has announced that the Mississippi River will crest in Alton and Grafton late Friday night or early Saturday morning, and start to fall on Sunday.

The Illinois River at Hardin, Illinois was expected to crest on Friday, but would remain near the crest into the first part of next week, before starting a slow fall.

West Alton is still under a voluntary evacuation order, and officials are strongly recommending that residents head for higher ground, as both the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers are nearing their crests, as well as the top of the levee system........

State Agency To Finance Stream Gauges........

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources recently announced that they will be funding close to 50 stream gauges that will keep tabs on river levels.

The Missouri Water Science Center in Rolla operates over 270 real-time gauges, however, 49 of them are slated to be deactivated in July due to unspecified funding cuts.  Annually, the gauges cost $14,600 to operate.

The gauges provide data which is utilized for a variety of purposes.  The U.S. Geological Survey teams up with agencies such as the Natural Resources Department to fund and operate the gauges........

River Closed After Tow Struck Bridge Pier........

Barge and rail traffic at a railroad bridge crossing the Mississippi River between Illinois and Iowa was halted after a tow vessel struck the span's protective pier.

On Friday, Cummings said that while the pier was damaged, the bridge was structurally sound.  Canadian Pacific had divers inspect the span's concrete supports, and found they were undamaged.   U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Brandon Giles said that the Mississippi River was reopened to river traffic just after 5 pm Friday........

Concerns Over Levee Breach Prompt Evacuation Recommendation........

The National Weather Service has announced that a levee close to West Alton, Missouri is in danger of failing.  Reportedly, the Consolidated North County Levee in northern St. Charles County is in danger of overtopping on account of the rising Mississippi River.

If the levee fails, the town of West Alton will need to be evacuated.  Emergency officials are recommending that the residents of evacuate the town just to be safe.  Several residents are evacuating, and others are moving their belongings to higher ground.

The area most affected is Riverlands Way, where there are homes and farmland.  The road is located between Highway 67, and the Melvin Price Lock And Dam.  Nearby Highway 94 is closed as well........

Riverbend Flooding

Flood Crest Delayed A Few Days........

The additional rainfall across the Riverbend has pushed back the anticipated river crests back toward the weekend.  The Mississippi River is creeping closer to it's crest and isn't expected to start falling until Sunday.

Grafton will continue to see high river levels through the weekend as well, and the Illinois River at Hardin is not expected to start to recede until the middle of next week.

Alton Fire Chief Bernie Sebold says that the city has their flood fight plan in effect.  In downtown Alton, the majority of businesses are open, however several are pumping water out of their basements........

Missouri Flooding News

Floodwaters Raise Health, Environmental Concerns........

State and local officials are saying that flooding along the Mississippi River and it's tributaries poses health risks to the public.  According to a news release from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services says that floodwaters may contain raw sewage, hazardous chemicals, and debris that may cause injury.

Having direct contact with floodwater may cause skin rashes, infect wounds, and cause stomach sickness.  Downed or damaged power lines in floodwaters present an electrocution hazard.  Also, reptiles, snakes, and insects displaced by floodwaters may be submerged or hiding in or around floodwaters.

Randall Williams, director of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services says that the biggest danger of flooding happens after the storm is past, and people wade or drive into standing or moving water.  He adds that it is important that people understand the hazards lurking in the water........

NEWS RELEASE

EMPHASIS: Watch For Electrical Hazards Due To Flood
Captain James W. Remillard, commanding officer, Troop I, Rolla, reminds all citizens of the many hazards created by the recent flooding. In addition to the fast-moving water, other conditions are dangerous. For example: Water has receded greatly from the major roadways, but standing water remains. Downed electrical power lines may or may not be energized and aren’t always visible where standing water exists. As an example, on May 1, 2017, the Gasconade River crested to record flood levels. Flood waters at the Jerome Access on the Gasconade River in Phelps County, Missouri, destroyed a major power line maintained by Sho-Me Power Electric Cooperative. While the line itself is not energized and will not electrocute people coming into contact with it, conductors and poles in the river near the Jerome Access could. Please maintain a safe distance from any downed power line. Do not cross any barriers set up by emergency workers. Utility crews are working hard to repair the many downed power lines caused by the tremendous flooding.
“There are many hazards out there that we simply cannot see,” said Capt. Remillard. “Please don’t fall into a false sense of security and become complacent, because the waters have receded. Continue to use extra caution because your life could depend on it!”
Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others: Share the waterway, and use common sense, good judgement, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Wear it!!

Meramec River Near Valley Park, Missouri

Floodwaters Receding....  Sandbags Remain For Additional Crests....

On Thursday, the high water along the Meramec River began receding, however, officials are wary of heading back into the hardest-hit areas.

Thursday afternoon, Valley Park Mayor Michael A. Pennise sent a letter to business owners and residents saying the mandatory evacuation order that went into effect Tuesday will be lifted at 8 am Friday morning.

Pennise noted that officials will continue to keep tabs on a secondary crest that is expected following the recent rainfall.  At Valley Park, the secondary crest is expected to be around 32 feet on Sunday, and then falling 12 feet by Thursday........

Rainfall Delays River Crest....  Alton Prepping For More Water....

The Mississippi River at Alton, Illinois is rising slower than was originally predicted, and forecasters are rolling back it's predicted crest due to rainfall.

Jim Sieveking with the National Weather Service said that through Thursday night, the region is expecting an extra three to four inches of rain.  He added that if it weren't for the rain, the crest would be coming sooner.

Earlier in the week, the NWS forecast that the Mississippi River would crest at the Melvin Price Locks and Dam No.26 on Wednesday, but that has been pushed back to Saturday.  It is predicted to crest at 33.8 feet at 1 am Saturday morning........

Sewer, Water Utilities Still Operational As River Recedes........

Local sewer and water utilities announced Wednesday evening that the major treatment facilities were still operational, and appear to have dodged a bullet, as the Meramec River has started to recede.

Missouri American Water ended up not shutting down as they had planned.  The shutdown was originally set to take place between Wednesday and Saturday due to flood concerns.  Floodwaters did come within inches of the pumps, but spokesman Brian Russell said that as long as the Meramec River continues to fall, the facility should be O.K..

There were no interruptions to service at the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District facilities along the Meramec River.  The treatment plants, one in Valley Park and one in Fenton, were threatened by floodwaters for the past week, but they were protected by barriers and sandbags........

Meramec River Flooding

Why Is The Meramec Flooding Again?

For the second time in fourteen months, a major flood is occurring along the Meramec River, leaving many people questioning hwy this is happening again.

Heavy rainfall is certainly a contributor to the flooding, but the lack of reservoirs along the Meramec River is a major contributor to the issue.  There were plans for a reservoir on the Meramec for decades, but they were eventually abandoned.

Russell Errett of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says that since there is no reservoir on the Meramec River, the only line of defense is the levees, so a lot of the time there is localized and flash flooding........

Meramec River Near Fenton, Missouri

News Release From BoatUS

Boating and Fishing Groups Send Message to Trump Administration and Congress: Now is Time to Fix Broken Ethanol Policy

26,000 Sign Petition for Ethanol Fuels Reform
WASHINGTON, DC, May 3, 2017 – In a letter sent today to the Trump administration and Congress, a coalition of recreational boating and sportfishing interests urged action to fix America’s broken ethanol policy. The American Sportfishing Association (ASA), Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS), National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and Marine Retailers Association of the Americas (MRAA) on behalf of the nation’s 12 million recreational boat owners, 46 million recreational anglers and 35,000 recreational boating businesses respectively expressed concern with the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS).

The RFS is the 2005 law that mandates the blending of biofuels such as corn-ethanol into our gasoline. When written, it was assumed that America’s use of gasoline would continue to rise. However, US gasoline usage has actually dropped steadily since 2005 and now the law forces more corn ethanol into fewer gallons of gasoline.

Boaters and anglers need access to safe and approved fuels. The letter said the RFS “…has discriminatorily affected the boating public – groups of boaters and anglers who purchase fuel for their boats… We write to ask that you to set a new course for the RFS – one that takes into account the objective concerns expressed by the boating community.”

Because of its ability to damage boat engines, federal law prohibits the use of gas blends greater than E10 (10 percent ethanol) in recreational boats. However, as the RFS forces E15 (15 percent ethanol) and higher blends into the market, the chance of misfueling increases. A 2016 Harris Poll found that 64 percent of consumers were not sure or did not pay attention to the type of gas they used. ASA, BoatUS, NMMA and MRAA believe that the increased volumes of E15 and other higher ethanol-blend fuels also reduce the availability of E10 and ethanol-free gas.

The letter asks for common sense reforms, such as ensuring that any future ethanol volumes do not exceed 9.7 percent of the nation’s total fuel supply; protecting true consumer choice at the pump by not artificially decreasing the supply of ethanol-free gasoline, and implementing new and more effective misfueling mitigation protections that will educate and protect all consumers.

Additionally, an appeal by the coalition of the four groups to the boating public and their members to petition for RFS reform with their local congressional representative and President Trump received over 26,000 responses from across the country.

Looking on the bright side, at least we're not on the Metamec.

Had to take Newlin-dog to Dryland so I decided to check out My River Home.

Guess we will have to wait a bit longer to check out the Driftwood bar and grill.

Hope everybody is being cautious around the floods, material things aren't worth your life.

Coast Guard closes portion of Upper Mississippi River to all vessel traffic

ST. LOUIS – The Coast Guard has closed a portion of the Upper Mississippi River to all vessel traffic near St. Louis, Tuesday.

Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River has closed traffic at 7:53 p.m. from mile marker 184.5 to mile marker 179, near the MacArthur Bridge, due to high water levels and fast currents.

“We are working closely with our interagency partners and industry stakeholders to mitigate the effects of a historic flooding event on par with the one we experienced in December 2015. Our collective priority is public safety,” said Capt. Martin Malloy, commander, Sector Upper Mississippi River.

The Waterways Action Plan recommends closing this portion of the river during extreme high water levels of 38 feet. Removal of any restrictions to river operations will be re-evaluated as river conditions improve.

The U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port determines when to issue a river closure by following a Waterways Action Plan, which provides the marine industry, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, state and local governments with a plan for facilitating the safe and orderly movement of traffic during extreme conditions on the inland rivers.

Coast Guard monitoring river levels and deploying flood punts

ST. LOUIS – The Coast Guard is monitoring river levels on the Upper Mississippi, Missouri, Illinois River and their tributaries after a recent storm in the St. Louis area, Tuesday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River in St. Louis have deployed nine flood punt teams to affected areas in support of the local Emergency Operation Centers in St. Louis County.

Sector Upper members are working closely with state, county, and city EOC’s to ensure the safety of residents potentially affected by flooding.

“Our foremost concerns are safety of life and navigation, protection of infrastructure and property, and to prevent marine casualties,” said Capt. Martin Malloy, commander, Sector Upper Mississippi River.

The Jerry F. Costello Lock on the Kaskaskia River is currently closed.

Riverbend Flooding

Communities In The Upper Riverbend Feeling Flood Effects........

As the floodwaters along the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers continue to rise, the National Weather Service has raised the height of the expected crests.  As a result, several roads and river ferries have been closed.

Wednesday afternoon, the floodwater at Grafton was at 27 feet, and forecast to rise another six inches.  The Grafton Ferry has ceased operations, as the Missouri landing is inundated.  Two Grafton businesses have closed due to high water.  The Hawg Pit is located at the lowest point in Grafton, and the Grafton Oyster Bar's parking lot was starting to flood.  The Loading Dock is just above the forecasted crest.

In Hardin, the Illinois River was at 32.85 feet which is eight feet above flood stage.  It is expected to crest at 33.5 feet on Wednesday afternoon.  The Illinois River is not expected to begin receding until May 7........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

Alton Installs Muscle Wall To Fight Floodwaters........

Tuesday afternoon, Alton's Public Works Department crews and the city's Fire Chief were busy moving 6 foot wide plastic barrier sections into place creating a "Muscle Wall" to stop rising floodwaters.

Alton Fire Chief and emergency management services director, Bernie Sebold said that after considerable research, the city purchased 36 of these floodwall segments.

The segments are four feet tall, and once filled with water, weigh 1,400 pounds.  The Muscle Wall segments are easier to store, transport and assemble than the concrete Jersey barriers that the city had been using previously........

Revised Flood Outlook At Or Higher Than 2015 Record........

On Tuesday morning, revised forecasts are showing that the Meramec River will likely meet or surpass records set back in December 2015 in Eureka and Valley Park.  The crests will likely arrive early Wednesday.

In Eureka, the Meramec River is expected to crest at more than 46 feet, several inches higher than in 2015 at around 1 am Wednesday.  Over the past several days, workers filled around 200,000 sandbags.

In Valley Park, the Meramec River should crest around 7 am Wednesday, at over 44 feet, which is right at the 2015 record level.  Portions of Valley Park in an evacuation zone were mostly deserted, however, some people stayed behind........

Mississippi River At Kimmswick, Missouri

Kimmswick Hopeful Gravel Barrier Will Keep Them Dry........

Even as towns are nervously watching the Meramec River rise, the City of Kimmswick is seeing the Mississippi River slowly creep into their town.

Kimmswick Mayor Phil Stang has decided to close Windsor Harbor Road in hopes of keeping the water out of town.  Longtime residents William Roesch and Kenny Cagle brought in their Bobcats and gravel to help construct a barricade in front of the road.

The city had constructed a similar barrier during the floods in December 2015.  They apparently held up to the floodwaters well, and officials are hopeful the barriers work again........

Mississippi River Near Cape Girardeau, Missouri

The Mississippi River Is Predicted To Crest Near Record Levels........

An updated forecast is predicting that the Mississippi River will crest at Cape Girardeau at a near record level on Saturday.  The National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky says that the river will crest at 48.5 feet.

This forecast is almost the same as the second highest crest at Cape Girardeau which was set in 1993 at 48.49 feet.  The highest crest recorded at Cape was 48.86 feet, which was set on January 2, 2016.  The Cape Girardeau floodwall is designed to withstand flood waters of around 55 feet.

Weather specialist David Humphrey of the National Weather Service in Paducah says that more heavy rainfall is likely later in the week.  He adds that additional rainfall will cause floodwater recession to slow........
