Opening of the North Gateway and Gateway Arch Park.........

Several hundred people headed down to the St. Louis riverfront Saturday to enjoy live music, food provided by local vendors, and to celebrate the opening of the North Gateway and Gateway Arch Park.

The celebration, called Spring Into Your Park, was organized by the CityArchRiver Foundation and it's partner groups, and is the first in a series of events scheduled for the park this year.

Eric Moraczewski, the executive director of the CityArchRiver Foundation believes that people need to head to the riverfront and enjoy the Arch Grounds again.  He adds that people tend to think of the Arch by itself, however, the Arch Grounds are a great place to hang out........

Bear Creek At Hannibal, Missouri

Suit Claims City of Hannibal To Blame For Flooding........

Next week, a case against the City of Hannibal is expected to go to trial, in which the plaintiff claims the City is at fault for major flooding along Bear Creek on July 20, 2010.

Property owned by Donald Jenkins was damaged when Bear Creek, a tributary of the Mississippi River, overflowed it's banks.  The property housed a building rented by businesses including Black Thunder Powerboats.  The building has been vacant since the flood.

Jenkins alleges that the city did not properly maintain the creek, and constructed bridges over the creek's natural channel, impeding the natural flow of water.  Jenkins claims that Hannibal allowed silt and vegetation to accumulate along the creek, especially under the bridges, effectively damming the creek and causing it to overflow onto his property........

Art Installation Inspired By Huck Finn, Mississippi River........

A new multi-media art installation inspired by the Mississippi River, and the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is on display at the St. Louis Art Museum through June 25.

New York based visual artist Shimon Attie created the exhibition Lost in Space (After Huck) for the museum's Currents series.  Attie says that he spent several months considering St. Louis and rereading Huckleberry Finn in preparation for the project.

The centerpiece of the installation is a cast resin sculpture of a white raft with several items aboard, a bundle tied to a stick, a knife, a corncob pipe, three sticks tied together, and a red light.  The raft is surrounded by a video installation that depicts a changing night sky, complete with lightning........

Mississippi River At Saverton, Missouri

Update:  Barge Sank In River At Saverton........

Following the nine barge pileup on the Mississippi River at Lock and Dam No.22 at Saverton, one of the barges has sunk.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Coast Guard had halted lock operations as of 9:30 am Friday morning.

The closure was to allow for the recovery of the barges, as well as assessing the dam for damages.  For now, the sunken barge will remain in place because of the high water levels.

Chief Allen Marshall of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says that leaving the barge submerges won't increase the likelihood of flooding........

Barge Accidents Close Parts Of Mississippi, Ohio Rivers........

Officials say that on Friday, two separate barge accidents brought navigation on the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers to a stand still, halting the flow of grain from upper Midwest to Gulf Coast export terminals.

A portion of the Mississippi River was closed to navigation after nine barges broke free from their tow, and struck Lock and Dam No.22 at Saverton, Missouri.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closed the river to navigation to allow them to assess damages and start recovery operations.

On Thursday, the U.S. Coast Guard shut down a four mile section of the Ohio River near Brookport, Illinois after a tow vessel pushing 19 empty barges and one carrying steel struck Lock and Dam No.52 and started taking on water........

This barrel is just 50 yards east of the Lady statue here in Portage, I suspect it's full of used motor oil as many I've seen floating through are.
Does anybody have any suggestions on who to call to have it picked up and properly disposed of?!?
I've tried the EPA but they don't handle stuff like that

Boating Safety

A Look At How Fast Fires Spread Aboard Boats........

The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water is focusing on boat fire safety, and they recently released Foundation Findings #55, which is part of a long-running educational series devoted to boating safety topics.

Foundation Findings #55 features a video that depicts an electrical fire aboard a small open fishing boat, an engine compartment fire on a sport boat, and a cabin fire on a larger cruiser.

These simulations are intended to give boaters an idea of how little time there is when a fire starts aboard their boat.  Foundation Findings #55 also offers practical advice on detecting a fire, and prioritizing the crew's response........

On Friday, the Missouri River was expected to have crested four feet above flood stage at Booneville, and around 1 to 2 feet above flood stage in Hermann, Washington and St. Charles........

The American Duchess Launch Pushed Back........

The American Queen Steamboat Company recently announced that the launch of the third vessel in their fleet, the American Duchess has been delayed for several weeks, causing their summer 2017 schedule to change as well.

The American Duchess, a former gambling vessel that is being completely renovated, was set to launch on July 1, 2017.  Now, the launch date has been pushed back to August 13.

While several itineraries for the early part of the season have been affected, lock restrictions along the Illinois River have forced the cancellation of cruises between St. Louis and Ottawa, Illinois.  Cruises scheduled for September 17 and beyond will not be affected........

News Release From BoatUS

Official-Looking Vessel Documentation Renewal Notices Can Lead to Confusion and Higher Costs

ALEXANDRIA, VA, April 6, 2017 – Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) Consumer Protection Department is advising boaters with vessels having a US Coast Guard Certificate of Documentation to be wary of any letter arriving by US mail offering renewal. An increasing number of BoatUS members have complained that these letters direct them to websites that may be mistaken for the actual US Coast Guard Vessel Documentation Center located in Falling Waters, West Virginia, and appear to show a significant increase in the annual fee to renew US Coast Guard (USCG) documentation.

BoatUS advises that while the USCG does send official annual renewal notices by US mail, other notices being received by members are not from the USCG but rather third-party companies whose name or return addresses may appear similar to that of the official USCG Vessel Documentation Center. Members of the half-million boat owners group report the letters look like “real” USCG communications. Some examples members have forwarded to BoatUS do not have any disclaimers noting that they are not official USCG correspondence.

While third-party companies may legitimately provide services to assist with vessel documentation renewals, the USCG’s own renewal process is simple for most vessels and the price, $26, is often much lower than what third-party services may charge. To renew, go to the USCG National Documentation Center website at www.uscg.mil/nvdc and click on “instructions and forms.”

To be documented, a vessel must measure at least 5 net tons and, with the exception of certain oil-spill response vessels, owned by a US citizen. Boats about 27 feet in length or longer generally meet the weight requirement.

If boat owners wish to file a consumer complaint about this or any other boating-related advertisement or company, BoatUS welcomes boaters to visit http://my.boatus.com/consumer/dispute.asp and click on “send us a complaint” button.

BoatUS also advises boaters who may have received mail that they believe is misleading or deceptive may contact the US Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455 or through its website https://postalinspectors.uspis.gov
.

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

Flood Warning At Hannibal Through The Weekend........

Thanks to steady rainfall over the past week and a half, the level of the Mississippi River at Hannibal, Missouri is pushing past flood stage for the first time in 2017.

Consequently, the National Weather Service has issued a river flood warning for the Mississippi River at Hannibal, which will run through Wednesday, April 12.  Shortly after 10 pm Wednesday, the river rose above the 16 foot flood stage.  The river is expected to crest just under 18 feet on Friday.

As of noon Thursday, the John Hay Recreation Area, located in Illinois, just across the river from Hannibal, was flooded.  There will be minor flooding in Hannibal, however, it won't be enough to warrant the installation of the city's flood gates........

Boating Legislation

BoatUS Calls On Congress To Maintain Boating Access........

During a Congressional hearing on Wednesday, BoatUS government affairs vice president Chris Edmonston called on Congress to preserve recreational boating access in America's national parks, even in light of budgetary considerations.

While testifying before the House Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee, Edmonston focused on the importance of public access to public lands and waters.

Edmonston told the committee that without adequate access to waterways there is practically no opportunities to go boating.  He recommended prioritizing investment in facilities that provide access to public lands and waters........

Boat Sales

Brokerage Sales Decreased During March........

During March, U.S. yacht brokerage sales decreased 2%, from 2,437 units in March 2016 to 2,387 units.  The total sales value, however, increased by 24%, from $281.7 million to $350.6 million.

The decrease in volume was for the most part attributed to a 122 boat decrease in sales in boats smaller than 26 feet, falling from 860 to 738.

This decrease was partially offset by increases in other categories, primarily the sales of boats from 46 to 55 feet, which increased from 127 to 168.  There were also small increases in volume amongst vessels 25 to 35 feet and 36 to 45 feet........

News Release From BoatUS

Boaters' Cure-All for Zippers and Other Spring Commissioning Tips from BoatUS
ALEXANDRIA, Va., April 5, 2017 – Getting corroded boat canvas zippers to work smoothly by using two common kitchen items has never been so popular, according to Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS). The national boating advocacy, services and safety group announced today the number one most widely viewed online “BoatTECH” how-to-fix-it tip this spring is author Don’s Casey’s simple saran wrap and vinegar repair.

“The high interest is driven by the annual rite of spring commissioning,” said BoatUS Vice President of Public Affairs Scott Croft. “Boaters across America are beginning to put all of the canvas biminis, sun shades, clear vinyl windows and camping canvas back on the boat for the season, and we all get frustrated by jammed-up zippers.”

The series of online how-to BoatTECH subjects at BoatUS.com/boattech can help boaters plan spring-commissioning projects or upgrades, from putting on bottom paint, replacing an impeller or performing sterndrive maintenance, to the more complicated installing an inverter or adding air conditioning. BoatTECH features are authored by top experts in their field as well as the editors of BoatUS Magazine.

BoatUS also has a free Spring Fitting Out Safety Checklist at https://goo.gl/tmHe28.

Lake Of The Ozarks

Bill Proposing Swim Ban Near Docks "DOA"........

According to Missouri State Representative Rocky Miller, the proposed legislation banning swimming near docks will not make it to the Governor's desk.  He says that he is was shocked to see the proposal in Jacob Hummel's Senate Bill 297, which bars swimming near all docks.

Miller criticized another portion of the bill, the liability language, claiming that it would likely result in the disconnection of electricity from all docks within the state.  Another possibility would be that Amren and the U.S. Corps of Engineers will refuse to permit any docks on Missouri lakes.

Currently, several substitute bills have been proposed, which remove the no swimming provision, and aligned the dock rules with those in place on the Lake of the Ozarks.  Miller adds that he has been working with Hummel and Amren to make improvements to the legislation........

The Delta Queen May Return In 2018........

On Monday, the U.S. Senate approved legislation proposed by Senators Roy Blunt and Claire McCaskill that would bring back the Delta Queen to Missouri, and now the vessel could resume cruising in 2018.  The legislation is headed to the House of Representatives.

The Delta Queen hasn't operated in Missouri since 2008, but the City of Kimmswick is preparing for her return.  Kimmswick Mayor Phil Stang said that the economic development that the Delta Queen would bring the town would be incredible.  170 local jobs will be created, and over $36 million would be brought to the St. Louis region.

Dana Jones, director of operations for the Delta Steamboat Company said that there will be a lot of work done to the Delta Queen before she hits the water again, including new clean-burn boilers, a brand-new galley, a lot of HVAC systems, as well as weatherproofing........

O’FALLON, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reports James Lucas of O’Fallon became the most recent record-breaking angler in Missouri when he caught a redear sunfish on a private pond in Lincoln County. The new “alternative method” record fish caught by Lucas on March 24 weighed 1 pound, 1 ounce. Lucas’ recent catch broke the previous state record of 6-ounces, caught in 1996.

Boat Propulsion Manufacturer

Mercury Marine Adds New Die Casting Machine........

Mercury Marine recently announced the commissioning of a new high pressure die casting machine at their Fond du Lac, Wisconsin campus.  Reportedly, the 4,500 ton Buhler-Prince machine is the biggest high pressure die casting machine in North America.

Mercury says that since 2009, they have invested over $800 million to expand research, development and manufacturing at the Fond du Lac campus.  The installation of the Buhler-Price machine started in late 2016, and was completed in March.

Mike Meyer, the general manager of Mercury Castings says that the new machine will allow the company to make castings that no one else in the industry is capable of making.  He adds that the machine will give Mercury the capability to make larger, lightweight structural components, and reduce the overall weight of Mercury's engines by producing more efficient castings........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

Financial, Environmental Effects Studied For Sewer Separation Project........

Steve Gibson, Alton's wastewater treatment manager, recently discussed an unfunded mandate regarding projects to separate the city's combined sewer system.  Combined sewer systems collect rainwater runoff, industrial wastewater and domestic sewage in the same pipe.

The unfunded mandate was originally from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Combined Sewer Overflow Control Policy of 1994, which requires the separation of storm water and sewage whenever possible.  The combined sewer systems usually routes storm runoff and wastewater to a treatment plant, where it is treated and released into the river.

During times of heavy rainfall or snowmelt, the volume of water can overwhelm the capacity of the sewer system or treatment plant.  When this occurs, the combined sewer system is designed to overflow directly into the river or waterway.  This creates a major water pollution issue for cities with a combined sewer system........

Upper Mississippi River at Twin Cities

Pavement, Lawns, And Dogs Are Major Pollutants to River........

The major pollutants that flow from the neighborhoods of the Twin Cities into the Mississippi River can be traced back to three things found in cities:  pavement, lawns and dogs.

Researchers from the University of Minnesota have been studying nitrogen and phosphorous in urban areas, and have determined where these pollutants come from, and where they go in the St. Paul region.

Researchers found that 76% of the phosphorous comes from pet waste, while leaves, lawn clippings, and yard waste make up the rest.  Nitrogen comes from the atmosphere, car and truck emissions, and residents that use too much fertilizer.  The pavement and other hard surfaces in urban areas offer a direct path out of town to the river........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Proposed Bill Would Ban Swimming Near Docks........

A bill working it's way through the Missouri State Senate that is intended to prevent electric shock drownings at the Lake of the Ozarks would ban swimming near docks.

The legislation, proposed by St. Louis area Senator Jacob Hummel has three specific propositions.  The first is that all Water Patrol vessels be equipped with an external defibrillator, and crewed by a person rained to use it.  The second would require the owner of a body of water to ramp up electrical code compliance for docks and marinas, and report annually that the docks and marinas were compliant.  The third would require the owner of a body of water to bar swimming around boat docks or marinas.

The Missouri Department of Public Safety would be charged with enforcement of the law, but it is not clear how the Missouri State Highway Patrol would enforce this policy.  The Water Patrol did not comment on the proposed swimming ban, but stated that all of the primary lake patrol boats are equipped with AED devices, while some river patrol boats and dragging vessels are not equipped with AED devices........

The Delta Queen

First Hurdle Cleared For The Delta Queen's Return To Cruising........

On Monday, the historic Delta Queen riverboat made a huge step toward once again cruising the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, as the U.S. Senate voted 85-12 in favor of exempting the vessel from the Safety at Sea Act.  The measure now heads to the House.

The exemption waives safety standards against wooden vessels carrying more than 50 passengers overnight, but there is a catch.  The vessel must meet new requirements, and pass annual inspections by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Owners must equip the Delta Queen with new boilers and generators, and each year, at least 10% of the vessel's flammable material has to be replaced........

Missouri River Management

Corps In Court Over 2011 Flooding Complaints........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is currently defending itself in court against some 300 farmers and land owners that allege the Corps' management of the Missouri River contributed to major flooding in five states, especially the flooding in 2011.

The suit was filed in 2014 in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, and maintains that since the mid-2000s, the Corps changed their procedures as pertains to the storage and release of Missouri River water and flow management, placing less emphasis on flood control, and more emphasis on restoring habitat for endangered species.

The suit argues that the Corps unconstitutionally deprived the plaintiffs of their land, effectively taking the land without compensation.  The lawsuit does not specify the amount of damages being sought, the plaintiff's attorney says it could top $250 million........

River History....

April 4, 1998 in River History

About 7:50 pm on April 4, 1998, a tow of the M/V Anne Holly, comprising 12 loaded and 2 empty barges, which was traveling northbound on the Mississippi River through the St. Louis Harbor, struck the Missouri-side pier of the center span of the Eads Bridge. Eight barges broke away from the tow and drifted back through the Missouri span. Three of these barges drifted toward the Admiral. The drifting barges struck the Admiral, causing 8 of its 10 mooring lines to break. The Admiral then rotated clockwise downriver, away from the Missouri riverbank. The captain of the Anne Holly disengaged his vessel from the six remaining barges in the tow and placed the Anne Holly’s bow against the Admiral’s bow to hold it against the bank. About the time the Anne Holly began pushing against the Admiral, the Admiral’s next-to-last mooring line parted. The Anne Holly and the single mooring wire that remained attached to the Admiral’s stern anchor held the Admiral near the Missouri bank. No deaths resulted from the accident; 50 people were examined for minor injuries. Of those examined, 16 were sent to local hospitals for further treatment. Damages were estimated at $11 million.

Mississippi River Commission At Port Of Hickman, Kentucky

MRC:  Less Funding Equals Less Dredging........

On Monday, the Mississippi River Commission held their annual town hall meeting with the people at the Port of Hickman aboard the Motor Vessel Mississippi.

According to MRC spokesman Jim Pogue, the commission's budget is tight this year, and instead of funding to dredge all 10 Memphis District harbors, there is only enough to do six.

Greg Curlin, Director of the Hickman Fulton County Riverport Authority discusses another issue for the region, a part of the river that has developed an island.  He says that over the past 20 years, the island has grown about 350 feet, slowing down river traffic........

Mississippi River Near Genoa, Wisconsin

Man Drowns After His Boat Capsizes And Goes Under Dam Gates........

On Friday, 52 year old James Kenneth Freeman of Lansing, Iowa drowned in the Mississippi River after his fishing boat capsized and went under the dam gates near Genoa, Wisconsin.

Vernon County Sheriff John Spears stated that Freeman had a life jacket aboard the vessel, and was trying to put it on when the boat capsized, and he was pulled under water.

Reportedly, Freeman had attempted to set his anchor in a restricted area, but it didn't hold.  officials believe the drowning may have been avoided if Freeman had been wearing a life jacket........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Large Bass More Common In The Lake........

Thanks to recent tournament weight and record setting catches during a Major League Fishing event, the Lake of the Ozarks is becoming known as one of the best bass fisheries in the nation.

Since Major League Fishing brought their popular televised fishing tournament program to the Lake last June, the excellent fishing at the Lake has gotten national exposure.

While the Lake of the Ozarks has long been known as one of the best bass fisheries in the country, that reputation is growing.  Bass tournaments with 5 or 6 bass limits are often being won with 25 - 30 pounds of fish, and 7 - 8 pound bass are caught regularly........

Boat Manufacturer

Hinckley Offering Certified Pre-Owned Sales Program........

The Hinckley Company, who manufactures luxury sailing yachts and jet-powered picnic boats, recently announced that they will begin offering a certified pre-owned program that provides extended warranties and the assurance that the vessels have been maintained by the factory.

Hinckley CEO Peter O'Connell says that many Hinckleys that hit the used boat market have been maintained by the Hinckley staff.  O'Connell adds that they know the boats, they know they've been properly maintained over their life, so extending specific warranties to a new owner is easy for the company.

For a Hinckley to qualify for certified pre-owned status, the vessel must have been serviced at one of the company's seven service operations, or in a yard authorized to service Hinckley vessels.  Then, the boat will be inspected, and listed for sale in a Hinckley-owned sales office.  The first certified pre-owned Hinckleys should hit the brokerage market this month........

Boat Sinks At Public Beach Dock........

Last week, a 28-foot Regal cabin cruiser sank in a boat slip at the Lake of the Ozarks Public Beach #2.  On Thursday, the boat named Harley's Angel II was recovered from the water by Lake Tow and Atlantis Dive & Dock Salvage.

The cause of the sinking was not announced in this case, however, a single missing piece, such as a drain plug, or a freeze plug can cause disaster.

BoatU.S. recently listed the top five reasons that boats sink in the spring, based upon insurance claim information.  They are:

○  Damaged or missing hose clamps

○  Unsecured engine hoses

○  Spring rains

○  Broken sea strainer

○  Leaky stuffing box

Senate Set To Vote On Delta Queen Exemption........

Back in 2008, the mostly wooden Delta Queen has been barred from carrying overnight passengers after an exemption from the 1966 Safety of Life at Sea Act expired.

Since then, legislators have been working to get the Delta Queen back to cruising the rivers, and on Monday evening, the Senate is set to vote on the bipartisan legislation that will help achieve this goal.

Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill says that the Delta Queen is one step closer to coming home to the St. Louis region, where she belongs.  McCaskill adds that returning the historic vessel to Missouri will also bring jobs and economic expansion to Jefferson County........

Record Setting Crappie Headed To Bass Pro........

On Tuesday, a record-setting crappie was caught in Kincaid Lake.  Instead of being stuffed and mounted on a wall, the fish will get a new lease on life in the Bass Pro Shops aquarium in East Peoria, Illinois.

As far as the record is concerned, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources is working to determine which record was broken.  The IDNR is waiting for DNA testing to be completed in order to verify whether the fish is a black or hybrid crappie.

The crappie tipped the scales at 4 pounds, 8.8 ounces.  The black crappie record of 4 pounds, 8 ounces was set in 1976.  The record hybrid crappie was caught in 2008, and weighed in at 452 pounds.........

Cruise Providers Edge Into Untapped River Market........

Each year, thousands of Americans head to Europe looking for the river cruise experience, however, back at home there are some untapped resources poised to lure them back to the U.S.

So far this year, there have fourteen new river cruise boats ordered for worldwide production.  The greatest change is that more boats are being ordered and renovated for use in America.

Ted Sykes, president and CEO of American Queen Steamboat Co. said that along the Mississippi River, the market is underserved, with the current offerings attending to about two thirds of the market capacity, while interest from cruise providers and patrons continues to increase........
