Bill,

Went out to 521 Tuesday. The island is covered in pelican crap. Smells awful. I am sure it will pass soon. I was able to get some video of a few pelicans on the sand bar down by Mason and took a little flight from Port Charles up to Woodland. It was pretty overcast but not a bad day.

FEMA:  City Ineligible For Assistance For 2015 Sewage Lagoon Flooding.....

The City of Pacific, Missouri recently received notification that the Federal Emergency Management Agency determined that damage incurred to the city's sewage lagoon during the December 2015 flooding isn't eligible for federal assistance.

The notice states that Pacific's agreement with engineering firm 21 Design Group is the reason the assistance request was rejected, as the firm does not meet federal guidelines.

City Administrator Steve Roth will be appealing FEMA's decision, and Alderman Mike Pigg recommended advising Senator Roy Blunt of both the rejection, as well as the appeal........

River History....

March 31, 2016 in Boating History

A celebration of Life was held at Kampsville, IL for the Goldenrod Showboat. The boat was scheduled to head for the scrap yard on April 1st.

The Goldenrod suffered irreparable damage in 2015 during efforts to save it from the flooding Illinois River.  Under the direction of Jacob Medford, vice president of the Historic Riverboat Preservation Association, volunteers then started removing artifacts such as chandeliers, gilded mirrors, photographs, and furnishings from the vessel to be placed in a Goldenrod museum at a future date.

On August 28, 2017

The Historic Riverboat Preservation Association announced:

The Goldenrod has been handed over to us free and clear of all legal issues, all debts are clear and we are in good standing with the land owners.

Kitten Rescued ........

A kitten is lucky to be alive after being rescued from the Mississippi River near New Orleans, Louisiana.  Back on February 21, a construction worker spotted the kitten floating in the river below the Crescent City Connection.

After being plucked from the water, the kitten was barely breathing, and rushed to the veterinarians at the Louisiana SPCA.  The kitten, affectionately named Buoy, had a fractured femur and severe hypothermia on her tail.  Both ended up having to be amputated.

Buoy has made a remarkable recovery over the past several weeks, and is now available for adoption........

Oil Spill on Mobile River ........

The Coast Guard is responding to a report of a diesel fuel discharge on the Mobile River near Mt. Vernon, Alabama, Thursday.

There are no reports of affected wildlife.
The cause of the incident is under investigation.

RiverBill says... I was at Tony's Restaurant in Alton, IL, last night having a late nite bite to eat and overheard Joe and Brad talking about working at Grafton Harbor, so we struck up a conversation and soon came to find out they were part of a "RiverBills Sticker Sighting" earlier that evening at Grafton Oyster Bar.

What is that guy doing wading in the water at the boat ramp ?

Again, we have a few clues -- OH NO !.

It's another vehicle in the water.

Keep pulling -- just a little further.

OK -   Just a little more ---Pull !

Now that we are checking things out --   are there any fish in there ?

Yes, everyone agrees What a mess !

These pictures were taken by Lisa Beckman at the Long Shot Saloon in Portage Des Sioux.   She was quick to point out that it wasn't her truck, nor did it belong to any of her friends and that it took two different tow trucks to get it out.

Angler Catches State Record Crappie........

On Tuesday, an angler caught a state record crappie on Kinkaid Lake in southwestern Illinois.  Ryan Povolish caught the fish which tipped the scales at 4 pounds, 8.8 ounces, beating the nearly 40 year old record crappie that weighed in at 4 pounds, 8.2 ounces.

Povolish was fishing with a friend, Josh Jackson, and was working a jig through a weed bed in 6 feet of water when he caught the fish.

As of Wednesday, the crappie was still alive, and Jackson said that he is hopeful that they can get the fish placed in an aquarium somewhere........

Free Fishing Workshop Coming Up in Kirksville........

The Missouri Department of Conservation recently announced that they are inviting children and their families to a free fishing workshop in Kirksville next month.  The workshop will focus on teaching kids fishing basics, with an emphasis on family involvement.

The MDC Discover Nature -- Fishing program offers a four part series of fishing workshops focusing on the basics of fishing, including tackle and knot tying, intended to teach the skills and confidence needed to fish on their own.

The workshop is free and open to anyone interested in learning about fishing.  Kids need to be accompanied by an adult, and participants must preregister by 5 pm on April 14........

Federal Law Delays Viking Cruises Mississippi River Tours........

This year, European-based Viking Cruises was slated to start offering cruises along the Mississippi River, however, their plans have hit a bit of a snag.  It is unclear whether the company can dock in the U.S. at all.

The Jones Act, a federal law dating to the 1920s, prohibits international companies from operating on U.S. waterways.  The law requires boats to be owned by an American company, built in the U.S., and crewed by U.S. citizens.

Viking Cruises says that they are still committed to offer river cruises along U.S. waterways, and they are working to find a way to comply with the law........

River History....

March 30, 1822 in Boating History

The United States Congress passed an Act that vested land in the state of Illinois for construction of a man made navigable canal (CSSC) to connect Lake Michigan and the Chicago River with the Illinois and Mississippi River.

In 1887 the Illinois General Assembly decided to reverse the flow of the Chicago River through civil engineering by taking water from Lake Michigan and discharging it into the Mississippi River watershed through the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.

The hydrologic connection was made in 1900 giving commercial navigation access to the Mississippi watershed, but along with that came Chicago's sewage.

Sales Growth Tapered Off During February........

According to the latest Info-Link Bellwether report, boat sales were up year-over-year during February, however, at a slightly lower rate than during January.

The segments that had the best performance during the 12 month period ending in February were the sportfish and tow boat segments, both of which were up by about 10%........

Intermodal Container Terminal Plans in Work........

Plans are in the works for the development of a new intermodal container terminal along the Lower Mississippi River, in Plaquemines Parrish, Louisiana.

The proposed facility would be capable of docking deep water vessels, and have enough waterfront to allow for multiple ocean and container vessels to tie up.

The multi-modal container port would be located between Mississippi River Mile 50 and 55, and will involve the development of a logistics system for vessel operations between the port and upriver terminals, initially planned for Memphis and St. Louis........

MDC urges anglers to carefully discard used fishing line

Barred owl rescued from line entanglement shows dangers to wildlife

Kansas City, Mo. – Monofilament fishing line is one of modern angling’s finest tools, but it’s also a hazard to wildlife if old line isn’t recycled or disposed of properly. For example, a barred owl was rescued on March 25 in Platte County after it became entangled in fishing line.

Daniel and Debbie Haus of Kansas City are Missouri Master Naturalists and volunteers at the Lakeside Nature Center in Swope Park, which does wildlife rehabilitation. They answered a call for help and rescued the barred owl. They found the owl with fishing line wrapped around its wing, hanging helplessly from a tree limb at a private fishing lake. They cut the line and took the owl to Lakeside Nature Center. They are hopeful the owl escaped serious injury and can soon be released back to the wild.

Not all wildlife is as lucky, though. Birds, mammals and reptiles that frequent lakes and streams can become entangled in fishing line and suffer severe injuries or death. Anglers are urged to dispose of used fishing line carefully, and any littering is a disservice to people and wildlife. Some fishing spots have bins to collect old fishing line so it can be recycled.

For more information on fishing line recycling programs in Missouri, visit http://www.mostreamteam.org/mrrp.asp. For more information on Missouri’s outdoors, visit http://mdc.mo.gov.

River History....

March 29, 1969 in Boating History

On March 29, 1969 a replica of Christopher Columbus' sailing ship, the Santa Maria arrived at the riverfront in downtown St Louis and was moored along side the Admiral Riverboat. Alfonso J. Cervantes, former mayor of St. Louis Mayor, acquired the ship in a bidding war with the Rockefellers. He wanted to use it to recall the Spanish history of St. Louis.

The Santa Maria did not fit in very well with the rest of the Riverfront at that time and quickly became the punch-line of many jokes.

On July 28, 1969, a storm caused the Santa Maria and the Becky Thatcher to break loose from their moorings. They floated downstream and hit an Illinois dock. The Santa Maria was damaged on her starboard side and sank. The ship was raised and repaired.

In March of 1973 the Sana Maria found a new home in Titusville, Florida. In 1974 she was gutted by a fire.

Santa Maria is Latin for Saint Mary

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

A Look At The Alton Amphitheater's Management........

A recent poll revealed that nearly 58% of respondents approve of the way that the Liberty Bank Alton Amphitheater is being used, however, just over 32% disapprove of how the facility is being used.

Many of those with negative views on how the amphitheater is being used cite issues with booking local events.  Others complain about the number of country acts performing at the venue, saying they would like to see more hip hop and reggae groups.

Alton Mayor Brandt Walker said that last year, there were more than 40 dates open at the amphitheater, and that Altonians are more than welcome to book both ticketed and non-ticketed events........

Fishy Tales From Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina

Men Catch A Shark, Gets Partially Eaten By Larger Shark........

Earlier this month, Jannick Schroder was fishing off the coast of North Carolina with friends when they reeled in what they believe to be a 135 - 175 pound Sandbank Shark.

After fighting with the shark for about a half hour, Schroder reeled the shark in to about 5 yards under the water surface.  A large dark shadow then swam under their boat, and then took a large bite out of the shark on the line.

What the men believed to have been a Great White shark then rammed the vessel, knocking it's passengers over.  Schroder says that after getting back to his feet, he cut the "half" shark loose, so the Great White would quit circling the boat.

Upon inspecting the vessel after the incident, the men found a tooth lodged in the outboard engine's cover........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Grave Sites Still Lay Beneath The Lake........

There is a good chance that there are several cemetery sites along the bottom of the Lake of the Ozarks, within sight of lakefront homes and businesses.  And many of those cemeteries are still occupied.

The Osage River Valley that is now known as the Lake of the Ozarks had been settled by pioneers at least a century before the lake was built.  The pioneers buried their dead in cemetery plots, typically on their farms, which were located in the valleys, where the ground was more fertile.

Between 1929 and 1931, the Bagnell Dam was under construction, and Union Electric, the lake developer, did what they could to relocate human remains if a known cemetery was below the projected shoreline.  Of the 60 cemeteries with around 2,800 gravesites, only 1,121 were clearly marked by tombstones........

CAN THE RIVER COUNT ON YOU

*Action Alert*- Budget Slashes Safeguards Along Mississippi River

Which River image do you prefer? One that shows clean water and healthy wildlife? Or one that shows a harmful algae bloom?

River Citizens,

Future generations along the Mississippi River will suffer if drastic cuts to conservation and environmental programs proposed in President Trump’s budget take place.

Fortunately, Congress sets funding not the President, so tell Congress now by signing this petition that you oppose slashing funding for protecting clean air and water, restoring wildlife habitat, conserving our natural resources, and providing places for outdoor recreation.

Sacrificing public health and safety by cutting spending from 20% to over 30% for the agencies that safeguard our drinking water and natural resources in order to fund more military spending would hurt not help our local and national security. It’ll set our environmental protections back decades and cause harm for generations to come.

Tell your US Senators and Representative that protecting the land, water, wildlife and people of America’s Greatest River is important to you and your family and friends. Many Members of Congress already have voiced their concerns about the President’s decimating cuts. Show your leaders that you want them to stand up for what’s important to you.

Your friend and fellow River Citizen,

Brooke Thurau

The Confluence Tower Wind Festival Has Been Rescheduled........

Thanks to the threat of thunderstorms and lightning on Saturday forced the cancellation of the Lewis and Clark Confluence Tower's annual Wind Festival to be rescheduled.

The Wind Festival will now be taking place on Saturday, April 15, from 10 am to 2 pm.  The Gateway kite Club will be on hand to show off their kites, and will have trainer kites for those interested in learning how to fly them.

According to Deanna Barnes the project manager for the Village of Hartford, the Wind Festival is a wonderful family event, and the Confluence Tower is the perfect spot to take advantage of winds in the area to fly kites........

River History....

March 28, 2012 in Boating History

A carpenter working on the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge in downtown St. Louis plunged to his death in the river when a barge-mounted lift toppled. The employee was working on pilings from a boom lift that was placed on a secured barge. The mobile piece of equipment was not secured to the barge and tipped over into the water taking the employee in the boom with it. His body was found attached to the lift. OSHA cited the three general contractors and the subcontractor for three violations totalling $15,300.

Coalition Calls On Congress To Address Carp In The Great Lakes........

On Friday, a group of maritime business and industry organizations penned a letter to Congress calling for funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, which would build upon Illinois' efforts to stop the advance of Asian carp toward the Great Lakes.

In the letter, the UnLock Our Jobs coalition members discussed the level of success that the GLRI and the state of Illinois had in developing strategies for controlling Asian carp.  They also noted that these efforts led to the removal of 5 million pounds of Asian carp from the Illinois River over the past 5 years.

Lyn Muench, UOJ coordinator and Senior Vice President - Regional Advocacy with The American Waterways Operators said that the coalition is committed to the responsible stewardship of the waterways which they operate on, and the communities they operate in........

First Annual Chinese Lantern Release Is A Success........

About a month ago, Joe Bailey, the owner of Universal Elements Photography, decided that putting together a Chinese Lantern Release would be fun and a great way to bring the community together.

There are a variety of Chinese lanterns, some hang and are used for light, floating lanterns used for celebrations, and flying lanterns used for special occasions.  It is thought that the use of lanterns originated during the Eastern Han Dynasty.

On Saturday, about 80 people headed to Alton's Riverfront Park to launch their lanterns.  Approximately 70% of the lanterns launched rose above the Mississippi River, and headed toward Grafton........

Old Christmas Trees Repurposed In The Lake........

On Saturday, volunteers and conservationists planted some trees in an odd location, at the bottom of Mark Twain Lake.  The old Christmas trees were repurposed as a conservation project.

The former Christmas trees will serve as homes for fish, as well as hiding and feeding spots.  Another benefit to the submerged trees is that they will create fishing hot-spots.

Park Ranger Brad Stamp said that by creating this artificial habitat, fish have a good chance to feed and grow without being eaten........

RiverBill,

I installed a navigation post and light to make it easier for boaters to access Piasa creek and Alton Motor Boat Club. It’s easy to get in and out of Piasa creek once you know where the sand is. Coming down river just go about 40 yards past the post and turn back up to access the creek. At normal pool you can’t see the sandbar in the picture so the post and light makes it easier to navigate.

The boat club has a few nice covered slips available if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the awesome website.

News Release From BoatUS

ANNAPOLIS, MD, March 23, 2017 – In an effort to improve boat fire safety aboard recreational boats, the nonprofit BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water today issued “Foundation Findings #55.” The report, part of a long-running educational series devoted to boating-safety topics, includes a five-minute video showing three actual boat burns captured by 12 cameras.

The video depicts an electrical fire aboard a small open fishing boat, an engine compartment fire aboard a typical sport boat, and a cabin fire aboard a larger cruiser. By simulating various types of boat fires and capturing on video, Foundation Findings #55 offers boaters a look at how little time they may have when there’s a fire aboard. Practical advice on the importance of detection and prioritizing your crew’s response, as well as fire prevention and preparation are included at the report’s website BoatUS.org/Findings/55.

“We’ve outlined some simple steps all boaters can take to improve their own fire safety,” said BoatUS Foundation Assistant Director of Boating Safety Ted Sensenbrenner. “We want to help boaters, for example, make the decision to add more fire extinguishers than the bare minimum required, or to properly connect their DSC VHF radio to the GPS so that the one-button mayday feature works when they really need it.”

For more information on boating safety, go to BoatUS.org.

News Release From BoatUS

Dear Friends:

By now, you may have heard about
Spring Aboard, a weeklong event (March 19–25) of ramped-up promotion by boating safety groups to encourage recreational boaters to take a boating safety course.

A partner of Spring Aboard, our own BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water, offers 33 state online boating safety courses – good for proof of a boating safety certificate – at absolutely no cost.

In support of this ramped-up promotion, here is our :60 infomercial to be run on late-night television that urges boaters to take a free BoatUS Foundation state online boating safety course, with pitchman “Crazy Eddie” BoatUS Foundation Assistant Director of Boating Safety, Ted Sensenbrenner.

North Dakota, Belle Fourche Pipeline

Oil Spill Three Times Larger Than 1st Estimated

The oil pipeline spill that happened in December 2016 in western North Dakota was probably about three times bigger than first estimated.

It is now believed that about 530,000 gallons of oil was spilled from the Belle Fourche Pipeline. The earlier estimate was about 176,000 gallons.

The Wyoming-based True Cos company, which operates the pipeline, says it is committed to cleaning up the spill and that the job is about 80 percent done.

Brunswick Corporation

Bayliner and Sea Ray Factory in Brazil Closing

Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: BC) today announced it will immediately begin to wind down boat manufacturing operations in Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brazil, as it prepares to close the facility. The operation manufactures certain Bayliner and Sea Ray boat models for the South American market. Moving forward, this demand will be fulfilled through Brunswick's remaining global boat manufacturing footprint.

"The region's continued weak economy has made it difficult to profitably serve these markets with a dedicated manufacturing facility," explained Huw Bower, president - Brunswick Boat Group. "With our existing commercial infrastructure and channel presence, we can return to our previous model of importing boats to the region to more efficiently and effectively fulfill demand to this important market."

The Company said the resulting restructuring charges are estimated to be in the range of $10 million to $12 million pretax, substantially all of which will be recorded in the first quarter of 2017. Further, these actions are projected to have a modestly positive impact on earnings and a minimal impact on free cash flow, with the majority of the earnings benefit occurring in 2018.

The Company further stated that this decision has no impact on its strategy or plans for Brunswick's Mercury Marine engine business or its Life Fitness business in the region. Though the region's economy continues to be challenging, its effects have been more pronounced on the boat business.

New Lighting May Be Postponed A Week Or So

The plan to fix the deck lighting on the Clark Bridge may have to be delayed a few weeks because of the weather forecast.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is planning to install LED lighting on the bridge that will provide cheaper, more consistent and aesthetically pleasing lighting.

IDOT is hoping to coordinate the project with the city of Alton.  Alton is planning to fix the decorative lighting that illuminates the cables on the bridge.

River History....

March 24, 2010 in River History

The "Original Sharkys" Restaurant opened on the river at North Shore Marina on a Wednesday night under the direction of Tim Tighe, John Biondo and Dutch Hauhe.

The river had some minor flooding going at the time that caused the road across the harbor, going to the restaurant, to be under water. The restaurant then provided a Shuttle Suburban to ferry customers back and forth all night long through the flood water….

The restaurant had to close it's doors a few days later because the water on the road got to deep, only to re-open a few days later after they purchased a pontoon boat to shuttle patrons back and forth.

Meramec River

Drinking Water Tastes bad

Fenton residents are complaining about the taste of their drinking water. They say that it smells and tastes a lot like fish.

Missouri American Water says the problem is with the south water treatment plant which treats water flowing from the Meramec river.  The company is looking into what is causing the funky smell and taste and say the water is perfectly safe to drink.

News Release From BoatUS

ST. CHARLES, MO, March 22, 2017 – Paul Hopkins, the owner of Port Charles Harbor Marina in St. Charles, Missouri, is the new owner of TowBoatUS St. Charles. “TowBoatUS has been providing great service to Mississippi River boaters for the last seven years,” Hopkins said. “As soon as we learned the former owner was leaving, we contacted BoatUS and said we wanted to take over.”

Hopkins bought Port Charles Harbor as a fixer-upper 20 years ago and turned it into a highly regarded full-service marina. This comes as no surprise, because he grew up in the marine business. At a young age, he was around his grandfather’s marina, and ended up managing at his father’s marinas later in life. “I’ve always owned boats and loved boating,” he said. “It’s in my blood. I don’t believe I could do anything else. Adding TowBoatUS to our business feels right because customer service has always been our main focus. Now we can continue it on the water as well.”

The TowBoatUS St. Charles service area extends from the Winfield Lock and Dam at mile 241.4, to the Melvin Price Locks and Dam at mile 200.78 of the Mississippi River. The service area also includes the confluence of the Mississippi River and Illinois River up to Hardin.

Port Charles Harbor is located at mile 221.5 on the Upper Mississippi, which is in the middle of an extremely popular recreational boating area with 16 marinas and thousands of boats in a 40-mile stretch of clean, flat water between the locks and dams at Winfield, Missouri and Alton, Illinois. Boaters from the Great Loop Association also visit the area regularly. “It is beautiful here,” Hopkins said. “When people go out there, they feel like they are on a lake instead of a river, but there are some shallow spots and rock dikes outside the channel, so they have to pay attention. If the unexpected happens, TowBoatUS is there to help when they end up on a sandbar, have a breakdown, or run out of fuel.”

Much like an auto club for boaters, BoatUS offers TowBoatUS on-water Unlimited Towing Membership Plans for freshwater boaters and anglers for just $72 a year which includes BoatUS membership. Boaters face costs that average more than $700 per towing incident – with some paying into the thousands out of pocket – when they don’t have an annual BoatUS towing plan.

Two bright-red response boats, a 33-foot Cruisers Inc. express cruiser powered by twin 350-hp inboard engines and a 20-foot Tahoe runabout with a 235-hp inboard/outboard engine, are on call and ready to help 24/7. The TowBoatUS name is emblazoned in white letters on their hulls, and both are fully rigged for towing and salvage, with powerful pumps, battery jump packs, dive gear and extra fuel. All are helmed by experienced licensed captains.

Boaters can reach TowBoatUS St. Charles by hailing on VHF channel 16, calling the company directly at 636-250-2628, by phoning the BoatUS toll-free 24/7 Dispatch Center at 800-391-4869, or via smartphone using the free BoatUS Towing App. More information can be found at BoatUS.com/towing or call 800-888-4869.

Clint Pinkelman, of Hartington, Nebraska, was out on his first boat ride of the year when he discovered the wreck of the steamboat North Alabama, a 220-ton vessel that struck a sandbar and sank in the Missouri River on Oct. 27, 1870. The wreck had emerged from the Missouri river because of the low water levels that year.

World Water Day

World Water Day, on 22 March every year, is about taking action to tackle the water crisis. Today, 1.8 billion people use a source of drinking water contaminated with faeces, putting them at risk of contracting cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio.

The Sustainable Development Goals, launched in 2015, include a target to ensure everyone has access to safe water by 2030, making water a key issue in the fight to eradicate extreme poverty.

In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly officially designated March 22 as World Water Day. World Water Day is coordinated by UN-Water in collaboration with governments and partners.
