Richard wrote that this photo was taken about 15 years ago on a trip he made through St. Louis.

A Little History:

The restaurant opened for business in 1980 and closed it's doors in November of 2000.  The McDonald's corporation  issued a statement saying it "has made a business decision to close its location at 322 South L.K. Sullivan Blvd." because the structure "is in need of extensive renovation, which is financially not justifiable at the present."

Houseboat Manufacturer Gibson Is Returning........

In 1968, Gibson Boats was founded by William C. Brummett, and over the years, produced thousands of boats.  After being hit hard by the recession, Gibson was forced to shutter it's operations in 2013.

On March 1, Kelly and Pam Cawthorne, their son Shane, and his wife Danielle, purchased the rights to manufacture Gibson fiberglass houseboats.

The Cawthornes are currently in the process of relocating the molds, tools, manufacturing equipment, and parts from Portland, Tennessee to Tea, South Dakota, where the new Gibson Boats S.D. LLC will be located.

The family will offer a full production line, but will mainly focus on service, fiberglass repair and refurbishing.  Kelly says that the family has been refurbished houseboats prior to this venture, and that is what they want to establish as they get started........

Mississippi River At St. Paul, Minnesota

First Tow Of The Season Reaches St. Paul........

At around 6 am Wednesday, the Motor Vessel Stephen L. Colby locked through Lock and Dam No.2, near Hastings, Minnesota.  The tow was pushing 12 barges, with a final destination of St. Paul, Minnesota.

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the arrival of the first tow at Lock and Dam No.2 is the unofficial start to the navigation season, as it means that all of the locks are accessible to recreational and commercial vessels.

The Corps is reminding boaters that they need to "share the road", as commercial towboats laden with barges are not as maneuverable as recreational vessels, and take longer to stop.  Prior to hitting the water, the Corps recommends that boaters not only know their boat, but the "rules of the road"........

Mississippi River At Kimmswick, Missouri

Residents Displeased With Barge Parking Plan........

The owner of a quarry located in Jefferson County, Missouri is seeking a permit that would allow the company to basically park barges along the banks of the Mississippi River at Kimmswick.

The Simpson Materials Quarry is just downstream, and wants the fleeting areas for shipping sand as well as other non-hazardous bulk materials.

The company has withdrawn it's request for two fleeting areas near Sulphur Springs Landing, a small group of about 20 homes along the river.  Ultimately, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will have the final decision, and is looking for public input........

An Electric Powered Stand-Up PWC Has Been Introduced........

Free Form Factory recently introduced the world's first electric, stand up personal watercraft, the Gratis X1.According to Jordan Darling, founder and CEO of Free Form Factory, Gratis X1 riders will enjoy a powerful, quiet, and fun ride, free from the constraints of gas powered personal watercraft.

The Gratis X1 can be charged anywhere via a standard 110 volt electrical outlet, or a propane based generator.  Ride time on the Gratis X1 with the integrated power pack is on par with it's gas-powered brethren at around 45 minutes, and up to an hour with the additional 3.3 kWh power pack.

Darling says that access and ease of use are two of the most critical demands of personal watercraft riders, and no other PWC gives the rider the freedom to choose where you want to ride, when you want to ride, and how to charge your ride like the Gratis X1........

Imprisoned Jimmy Scott Discusses The Flood Of 1993........

For the better part of 20 years, James Scott has been serving a life sentence for intentionally causing the breach of the West Quincy Levee on July 16, 1993.

Scott had been with another man, patrolling the West Quincy Levee, when they spotted a trouble spot.  He reported the issue, and the left, but returned later that evening.  He moved sandbags from the brim to the levee cap.

The levee broke shortly thereafter.  Scott says that he doesn't believe that his actions contributed to the levee failure, but if his actions did cause the failure, that wasn't his intention........

Coldwater Creek In Hazelwood, Missouri

Creek Cleanup Shifting To Residential Properties........

Starting later this month, crews will be removing radioactively contaminated soil from residential properties in Hazelwood, along Coldwater Creek, which is a tributary of the Missouri River.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be removing approximately 5,000 cubic yards of soil contaminated with thorium.  Amanda Kruse, spokesperson for the Corps' St. Louis District said that the contamination is low level, but higher that what their remediation goals are.

Kruse says that the contamination in the residential areas was transported to the area years ago from runoff and flooding along the creek, prior to clean up work being performed at hazardous waste sites close to St. Louis Lambert International Airport and Latty Avenue in Hazelwood........

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 3, 2017

National Campaign Does Local Work In Great River Road Clean Up – more are scheduled and volunteers needed

ALTON—The Nation’s only campaign to help the entire Mississippi River, 1Mississippi, is partnering with Sierra Club’s Three River Project to host a series of Clean Ups along the Great River Road and Metro East roads.

On February 18th, over 40 volunteers picked up more than 90 bags of trash on the Great River Road and Clifton Terrace Road. Interesting items to note included: 31 tires, a mattress, a Wave Runner hull, large chunks of Styrofoam, and a typewriter. The group had the Alton Police Department involved because they came across ten hypodermic needles on the edge of the City. Partnering with the Village of Godfrey and Illinois Department of Transportation was helpful because they set out road safety signs, donated trash bags and safety vests, and removed the trash piles the volunteers put on the side of the Great River Road, including the tires.

“As Spring is nearing, we are reminded of how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful area with caring people. Locals and tourists enjoy traveling the Great River Road and we like to put our best face forward, especially after the grey of winter: a clean bluff line, a trash-free road, and less debris going into our great river. Not only is it more pleasing to look at and safer to bike, walk or drive, but working together helps to establish and reinforce community connections,” said Christine Favilla, Three Rivers Project Co-Coordinator of the Sierra Club.

Volunteers are needed for the following events. Preregistration is encouraged by sending an email to IL1Mississippi@biodiverse.org or at (618) 520-9749 and leaving a message.

Mark Twain Lake

Volunteers Sought For Fish Structure Placement........

During the annual Christmas tree recycling program, there were plenty of Christmas trees collected, and now, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is looking for volunteers to help place them at several sites in Mark Twain Lake.

The trees will be lashed together and sunk in the lake, creating an underwater habitat.  The structures not only offer fish a place to hide and rest, they also encourage the growth of algae and zooplankton from young fish to eat.

Perhaps the greatest advantage the fish structures provide is that they make great places to catch fish.  Those who volunteer to help place the fish structures will know where these "honey holes" are located........

NMMA Approves Of Ethanol Reform Legislation........

Bipartisan legislation was recently introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives that would reform the law dictating the amount of ethanol blended into the fuel supply.  The National Marine Manufacturers Association voiced their support of the bill.

Representatives Bob Goodlatte, R-VA, Jim Costa, D-CA, Steve Womack, R-AR, and Peter Welch, D-VT reintroduced H.R. 1315, the Renewable Fuel Standard Reform Act.

The legislation would eliminate corn-based ethanol requirements, set a cap on the amount of ethanol that can be blended with gasoline at 10%, and lowers the total volume of renewable fuels introduced into the marketplace from 2017 to 2022.........

The State Of The Mississippi River........

Back in 2012, the National Park Service and Friends of the Mississippi River teamed up to develop the Inaugural State of the River Report, which examined several health indicators for the Upper Mississippi River around the Twin Cities.

This report prompted changes at not only a state level, but a local level as well, including the closure of the St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam in order to keep Asian carp from moving further upstream.

Toward the end of last year, the groups released a new State of the River Report, which looks again at 14 fundamental indicators of river health, and offers recommendations for improving the Mississippi River........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Lake At Annual Low.... Some Docks Are Grounded....

As the level of the Lake of the Ozarks reaches it's annual low level, docks in some areas of the Lake are sitting on the ground.  Each year, Amren Missouri draws down the level of the Lake to make room for spring rains.

Amren Missouri reports that as of Monday, March 6, the level of the Lake was at 654.1 feet, which is in line with the guide curve for this time of year.  Operators will start raising Lake levels in early April, with a goal of reaching 659 feet by Memorial Day.

While low Lake levels are annoying for dock owners in shallow water, there is a benefit to those dock owners;  they now have the chance to inspect their seawall, and make necessary repairs prior to boating season........

Mississippi River Investment Should Be A Priority........

According to the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative, the Mississippi River winds past 124 towns in 10 states, supports nearly 497 billion in annual revenue, and supports 1.5 million jobs.

President Trump is planning 1 trillion in infrastructure investments, and last week, 18 Mississippi River mayors were in Washington D.C. to push for the Mississippi River.  During a news conference, they made the case for an $8 billion investment in upgrades for aging locks, as well as restoration of floodplains and ecosystems.

The mayors group claims that Mississippi River investments will pay dividends to the economy.  If locks operate better, shipping delays would be reduced, and FEMA investments in flood mitigation projects will reduce disaster costs considerably........

Asian Cape Update

Michigan Calls For Public Help In Carp Battle........

Facing the threat of Asian carp reaching the Great Lakes, the state of Michigan is calling on the public for fresh ideas for keeping the invasive carp out of the lakes.  The state is also offering a prize for the developer of the best idea.

Michigan's global search challenge comes on the heels of the federal government and other spending hundreds of millions of dollars searching for a way to keep the carp from reaching the world's largest freshwater system.  If they aren't stopped, it is thought that the aggressive fish will outcompete native fish, harming recreational fishing in the Great Lakes.

Molly Flanagan, vice president of policy for the Alliance for the Great Lakes says that in fighting Asian carp, there aren't any bad ideas.  She adds that many things must be tried.  So far, officials have not determined how much prize money will be offered, nor how many winners may be chosen........

Duck Club Yacht Club

Letter from the New Restaurant Manager

Good day everyone. A note here from the desk of Mr. Hobo "aka Brian Ward". I would like to take just a few seconds of your time and introduce myself, my team and Hobos to you all.

First let me start by saying Thank You for the opportunity to serve each of you. I am humbled that some of you have visited one or more of my current locations and have found the taste to be a lot like home. I am excited and optimistic that Hobos will be able to satisfy your taste buds as you relax on the beautiful grounds and ponder the views at the Duck Club Yacht Club in 2017 and beyond.

Let me tell you a little something about me. Brian Ward born in 1965 in Hannibal, Missouri. We moved to St. Peters in the same year. I have lived here in the community my entire life. After graduation at what was at that time the only Fort Zumwalt High School I went right to work in the warehouse industry, the medical field more specifically. I worked for American Hospital Supply for several years. I went on to become the warehouse manager for a long period of time before leaving to pursue my dreams in cooking. After several years in the Catering Business I was given the chance to take on my first restaurant. In 2008 the American Legion Post 313 approached me about operating that location for them. I jumped at the opportunity and transformed Hobos Catering to Hobos at the Legion. I went through a divorce in 2013 through 2016 and have now met the girl of dreams, Lisa. In August of this year on the banks of the Mississippi River just outside the front door of our house we will declare our love for each other. Click here to continue reading....

Mississippi River At Cape Girardeau, Missouri

The River Draws Tourists, Dollars To Cape........

During Friday's First Friday Coffee at Isle Casino Cape Girardeau, Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau executive director Brenda Newbern said that last year, tourism brought some $16 billion in revenues into Missouri.

Newbern said that tourism is important, but one of the most important tourism draws is riverboat tourism.  This year, there are 16 scheduled riverboat dockings in Cape Girardeau.

Cape Girardeau Mayor Harry Rediger said he spoke with an executive with the American Queen riverboat company, who stated that they are selling out Mississippi River cruises.  Rediger added that Viking River Cruises is coming to the Mississippi River, however, they have yet to begin constructing the necessary vessels to do so........

Four Barges sank at Winfield Dam....

Four loaded barges being pushed downstream by Motor Vessel Julie White impacted the river wall bullnose while approaching Lock 25.. The four barges loaded with gravel broke free and sank. They rested against piers on the dam and pose no risk to navigation or the dam’s structure. There were no injuries.

The incident occurred at period of high flows on the Mississippi River, when Dam 25 was operating in a condition referred to as “open river,” meaning that all of the dam’s 17 gates are out of the water.

Girl Scouts Build Bridges At The Great Rivers Museum........

This weekend, Alton's National Great Rivers Museum hosted several dozen Riverbend area Girl Scouts for a Building Bridges Merit Badge session.

The event was held Saturday adjacent to the Melvin Price Locks and Dam, and began with a classroom session on bridge engineering principles, as well as environmental considerations.  There was a scavenger hunt in the museum to locate all of the bridges contained within the exhibits.

The girls also took a trip to the top of the locks structure, and then returned inside to build and test their own bridge structures.  The testing was done with sacks of pennies that were added to the spans until they failed.  Many were surprised at how much weight the bridges constructed with tape and straws could support........

Missouri River At Washington, Mo

Officials Looking For Boater Cooperation........

The Missouri Department of Transportation has voiced concerns about boaters near the construction site of the new Highway 47 Bridge, which will span the Missouri River at Washington, Missouri.

MoDOT Area Engineer Judy Wagner says that there are some boaters that are endangering themselves by traveling too close to the barges, speeding, and being too close to where crews are working.

Reportedly, there have been a few boaters that have stopped and trespassed on the ground at the construction site.  If these occurrences call for it, MoDOT may end up closing the north channel........

Lead Fishing Tackle Ban Reversed........

Thursday was U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke's first day on the job, and he hit the ground running by issuing two orders that broadens access to public lands, and increases hunting, fishing, and recreational opportunities across the nation.

These orders make good on promises made by President Trump and Zinke to expand access to the nation's public lands.  The orders were praised by representatives of sportsman, conservation and recreation organizations.

The first order, Secretarial Order No. 3346 overturns the ban on lead ammunition and fishing tackle used on Fish and Wildlife Service lands, waters, and facilities.  Secretarial Order No. 3347 calls on agencies and bureaus to quickly identify areas that recreation and fishing opportunities can be expanded........

Mississippi River Flooding Outlook

Minor Flooding Anticipated Along The Mississippi River........

According to meteorologist Andy Ervin with the National Weather Service Davenport, the 2017 snow melt flood will be occurring over the next several days.

Ervin says that the snow pack itself isn't that big, and the melt likely would not have resulted in flooding if the rivers, and their tributaries hadn't been running high over the winter.

He added that the water from snow melt is coming from the area near the headwaters of the Mississippi River in northern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.  Ervin says that the flooding will have a light impact........

Missouri State Highway Patrol

Spring Aboard!

Lieutenant Colonel Sandra K. Karsten, acting superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, announces the Patrol will participate in the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators’ (NASBLA) Spring Aboard campaign. Developed by NASBLA, and produced under a grant administered by the U.S. Coast Guard, the annual Spring Aboard campaign informs and motivates boaters to prepare for the boating season by providing information on how to enroll in a boater education course. The campaign emphasizes enrollment in approved courses which meet the national boating educational standard.

U.S. Coast Guard statistics indicate that of the accidents where the level of operator education was known, 80% of boating deaths occurred on boats where the boat operator had never received boating education instruction.

The Spring Aboard campaign encourages boaters to register for a certified boating educational course during the week of March 19-25, 2017. Forty-nine states and U.S. territories require some form of boater education.

Missouri law requires everyone born after January 1, 1984, who operates a vessel on Missouri lakes to possess a certified boating safety education card and photo ID. This includes personal watercraft operators.

Boaters have the opportunity to sign up for a certified course in a classroom or take an online course by visiting the Patrol’s website at www.mshp.dps.mo.gov. Look under Training on the Patrol’s homepage for the “Boat Safety Education & Certification” link. The classroom course provided by the Missouri State Highway Patrol is free, but registration is required and the boater ID card costs $15. Additional fees apply to the online course, which is provided by Boat-ed.com.

“Everyone looks forward to warm weather and the ability to spend time outdoors,” said Lt. Col. Karsten, “and Missouri’s many beautiful waterways provide endless opportunities for relaxation and recreation. The Patrol encourages those who have not already taken a course to sign up for a boating safety class now, before the season starts.”

Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others. Share the waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Wear It!!

March 2, 1699 in River History

Mardi Gras.......

King Louis XIV sent the pair to defend France's claim on the territory of Louisiane, which included what are now the U.S. states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

The expedition, led by Iberville, entered the mouth of the Mississippi River on the evening of March 2, 1699, Lundi Gras. They did not yet know it was the river explored and claimed for France by René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle in 1683. The party proceeded upstream to a place on the west bank about 60 miles downriver from where New Orleans is today, and made camp. This was on March 3, 1699, Mardi Gras, so in honor of this holiday, Iberville named the spot Point du Mardi Gras (French: "Mardi Gras Point") and called the nearby tributary Bayou Mardi Gras. Bienville went on to found the settlement of Mobile, Alabama in 1702 as the first capital of French Louisiana

Asian Carp Update

Plan For Dealing With Carp Problem Put On Hold........

A proposed plan for dealing with the Asian carp migrating ever closer to Lake Michigan has been put on hold by the Trump administration.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was set to release the plan, which would place barriers at a key choke-point along a Chicago area river.

Reportedly, the plan was ordered delayed so that the White House can review it, even though it has been in the works for several years.  This plan had not been finalized, meaning that other alternatives would be considered while the public offered their input........

American Cruise Lines Building New Cruise Vessels........

American Cruise Lines has announced that they are building five new cruise ships for America's rivers, with the first in the series set to launch during the summer of 2018.

Unlike the current vessels in American Cruise Line's lineup, the new cruise ships will not resemble Victorian paddlewheelers, but rather the 345 foot long vessels will be more modern in appearance.

American Cruise Line's Founder, Chairman and CEO Charles A. Robertson says that a lot of people had asked if they would build more modern vessels.  Robertson adds that there is a market for the modern cruise vessels........
