Blaze Damaged Boats at Liberty Harbor........

A fire damaged several boats and a dock at Liberty Harbor along the Mississippi River At Portage Des Sioux.  The blaze started around 1 am on Monday (2-27-17).

When responders arrived, one houseboat was completely engulfed in flames, and is a total loss.  Three other boats, including a work boat in the next slip, received smoke damage.  A portion of the dock was damaged as well.

Since there was fuel aboard the boats, the firefighters had to use foam to extinguish the blaze.  There were no injuries reported, and there is no word on the cause of the fire........

Patrol Helicopter And Marine Operation Troopers Rescue Missing Fisherman

At approximately 8 p.m. on February 24, 2017, Donna Stearns, from Harrisonville, MO, contacted Troop A, Lee’s Summit, and requested Troop A officers assist her in locating her missing 49-year-old husband, Kenneth Stearns. Mrs. Stearns stated she and her husband were camping in the area and Mr. Stearns was reportedly fishing by boat on Truman Lake near Sparrowfoot campground since approximately 1 p.m., and had not returned.

Troop A officers and Patrol helicopter 93MP responded to assist in the search. At approximately 4 a.m., on February 25, 2017, the Patrol helicopter located Mr. Stearns on the lake near a partially submerged sand bar between the Sparrowfoot and Deepwater access, in a remote area of the lake.

The Patrol pilot directed officers by boat to Stearns location where they extracted him and transported him to the Sparrowfoot boat ramp where emergency personnel were waiting. Mr. Stearns was transported to Golden Valley Hospital before being transferred to Kansas University Medical Center. Mr. Steans suffered serious health effects from being exposed to the elements.

Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others: Share the waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Wear It!!

4 Fire Extinguisher Myths, Burning Boats Reel

Dear Friends:

Boats burn every year and when they do, things get bad. Quickly. For boaters, acknowledging the possibility of a fire is an exercise in fear because there’s nothing more scary than to have open flames aboard and no place to go. I’d like to share two new videos from the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water that I encourage you to share with friends:

Four Fire Extinguisher Myths
https://youtu.be/_i3gFgZnXyk

At the BoatUS Foundation, this subject is always a “hot topic,” especially because some boaters mistakenly believe that fire extinguishers must be mounted. US Coast Guard Fire Extinguisher requirements include the following: Must be a marine-type, US Coast Guard-approved, in good, serviceable condition with sufficient charge, and you must have the required number of extinguishers aboard for your size and type of vessel. While mounting an extinguisher is not a USCG requirement, doing so is a smart idea because it keeps the extinguisher accessible where anyone can quickly grab it in the event of a fire.

Boat Fire Safety: Burning Boats Reel
https://youtu.be/eHFzjjOb-8s

Coming Soon: In April 2017, we’ll be releasing a full-length BoatUS Foundation Boat Fire Safety video that captures three dramatic fires on different types of powerboats. The video will urge boaters to improve their fire-safety efforts. This short one-minute+ burning boats reel captures some of the action.

Here’s to a safe and early start to the boating season!

Asian Carp Update

Carp Holding Steady Near Lake Michigan........

The near two decade fight to keep the Asian carp out of the Great Lakes is being fought at several locations across the Midwest, and has settled into an uneasy standoff along the Chicago waterway that is considered to be the conflict's front line.

Officials say that all indications are that the bighead and silver carp have not passed the series of electrical barriers intended to stop their advance up the Mississippi River watershed.

Charlie Wooley, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Midwest Regional director says that the best way to describe the situation is that they are holding their ground.  He added that through extensive testing in the Chicago region, things have more or less become a stalemate........

Fillback adds that they try to get friends, family members and businesses to donate to the Special Olympics on their behalf to hop into the water in February for a minute........

Builders Use Virtual Reality To Preview Boats........

During the recent Yachts Miami Beach show, Hatteras offered attendees the opportunity to tour their new Hatteras 90 Motor Yacht, which won't be introduced until next fall.  The tours were available via virtual reality.

Kelly Grindle, the new president of Hatteras says that it is tough to sell something that no one has been on, and that someone that will spend millions of dollars on a yacht will want a tour.

Show goers could see people in goggles spinning about, trying to touch parts of the boat during their virtual tour.  While it may be amusing to watch, the realism afforded by the virtual tours may be worth the laughter........

Dam News From Oroville, California

Officials:  Outflows To Be Stopped To Clear Debris........

California's Department of Water Resources announced that they will be halting outflows from the Oroville Dam's damaged spillway in order to allow workers to remove debris keeping a hydroelectric plant from working.

The DWP says that they will begin gradually halting outflows from the Northern California dam starting Monday morning.  They expect to completely halt outflows by the afternoon.

Dam releases will be stopped for a few days to permit workers to remove silt, concrete and other debris from a pool at the bottom of the spillway.  The debris removal will protect an underground hydroelectric plant, allowing it to resume operation........

Missouri River Flood Outlook

No Flooding Expected Along The Upper Missouri River........

Unseasonably warm temperatures during February caused most of the snowpack in the Dakotas to melt, so the experts are not expecting the Missouri River to flood in South Dakota this year.

According to Eileen Williamson, public affairs specialist with the United States Army Corps of Engineers' Northwestern Division, the mountain snowpack recently increased, however, the plains snow has already melted, meaning spring flooding is unlikely.

Williamson added that unpredictable weather across the Midwest can cause forecasts to change, so the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be keeping tabs on weather patterns and snow melt........

Polar Plunge Held To Benefit Special Olympics........

On Saturday, the Maryland Heights and Hazelwood Police Departments hosted a polar plunge event at Creve Coeur Lake to benefit Special Olympics of Missouri.

The polar plunge took place just as temperatures dropped to more February-like numbers.  Russ Avery, Maryland Heights Policeman and U.S. Marine Corps Reserve said that one would expect cold weather, but who would expect to see whitecaps on the lake at this time of year?

Jennifer Krumm with the Special Olympics of Missouri said that several of the officers that participate in the polar plunge spend quite a bit of time supporting Special Olympics Athletes.  She added that a lot of the officers love to volunteer........

Homemade Jonboat Sinks....  Three Men Nearly Drown....

Thursday night, a homemade jonboat swamped on Wappapello Lake, dumping three men into the chilly water, where they clung to the boat until it sank.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that 20 year old Timoth Stucker II was driving the boat around 8:30 pm with 19 year old Kenneth Carpenter Jr. and 20 year old Shawn Burns aboard.

As the homemade vessel decelerated, the bow submerged, and started taking on water.  After the boat sank, two of the men used a personal floatation device to get to shore.  The third man was rescued by MSHP Trooper Corporal James Wilson........

Too Many Barges Clog Shipping Sector Despite Record Harvest........

A surplus of idled river barges is currently lining the banks of the Mississippi River from St. Louis to New Orleans, causing U.S. barge shipping companies to count their losses.

Even though there are record sized exports of corn and soybeans, the decrease in coal shipments to levels not seen in decades has left the dry bulk barge fleet sparring over too little cargo.

On the heels of rising grain shipments since 2014, many barge fleets were expanded too quickly.  Now, despite a rise in grain shipments, the steeper decline in coal shipments has led to a surplus of barges........

Record Gizzard Shad Caught On The Big River........

On January 30, 2017, Riley Nolan broke the Missouri State record by catching a 2 pound 6 ounce gizzard shad along the Big River.  According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, Nolan gigged the 17 inch long gizzard shad, setting the new "alternative method" record.

The prior "alternative method" state record was a 2 pound, 5 ounce gizzard shad gigged in 2013.

Officials with the MDC verified the weight of the gizzard shad at Valley Park Elevator and Hardware.  Nolan intends to have the fish mounted........

107 Pound Catfish Caught ........

On February 12, angler Justin Neece was fishing on the Missouri River with his cousin, Jeremy Gore, and Gore's 9 year old son Jace, when he caught a 107 pound blue catfish.

Neece's intention was to let Jace reel in all of the fish, and the youngster started by catching a 20 pound blue cat.  The fish was followed up by a monster that threatened to pull the boy out of the boat.

Neece ended up taking over, fighting the fish for nearly a half hour.  Once landing the 107 pounder in the boat, Neece weighed the fish, posed for photos, and released the catfish.

The catfish wasn't a state record, which is still held by Greg Bernal of Florissant, Missouri, who caught a 130 pound fish in 2010 near the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers........

Work On The New Hwy. 47 Span About 15% Complete........

A cooperative Missouri River, and unseasonably warm winter weather has allowed considerable work to be accomplished on the new Highway 47 Bridge, which will span the Missouri River at Washington, Missouri.

According to Tim Hellebusch, the Missouri Department of Transportation's resident engineer for the project, the project is about 15% completed.  The project started in August, and is on schedule to open in the fall of 2018.

Hellebusch says that several days with warm, dry weather, have allowed crews to be able to accomplish a lot of work.  He added that the bridge's contractor, Alberici Constructors Inc., is working on the Warren County side, and will start in the Frenklin side of the river soon........

Lake Of The Ozarks

1931:  Huge Lake Forming At The Bagnell Dam........

Following the closure of the locks at the Union Electric Light and Power Company's Bagnell Dam, the largest body of water in Missouri began forming.  There was about eight feet of water in the valley a week after the locks were closed.

The earth and concrete dam is 2500 feet long, and 100 feet high.  In 1931, the cost of the dam was $30,000,000.  One of the last steps in moving forward with the project was securing the St. Joseph Lead Company as a customer.  Power from the hydroelectirc plant was transported to St. Louis, and the lead mines.

The settlement at the dam was named Damsite, Missouri, and housed about 250 people, all of whom work on the dam.  The Missouri Senate had passed legislation naming the lake Lake Benton, in honor of U.S. Senator Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri.  Union Electric called it Lake of the Ozarks........

River Ice Disappearing, River Levels Rising........

This year, it seems that Lake Pepin's ice likely won't be the last impediment to the first tow of the shipping season reaching the Twin Cities.

The weather this year is setting heat records, and Lake Pepin is rising rapidly.  By this weekend, the level of the lake may be up to 6 feet higher, meaning that the ice may be gone by March.

Last year, the first tow passed through Lake Pepin on March 12, and arrived in St. Paul on March 13, which was approximately 10 days sooner than average........

Corps, Madison County Chairman Talk American Bottom Levee........

Last week, Madison County Board Chairman Kurt Prenzler and Colonel Anthony P. Mitchell, commander and district engineer of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District met to discuss the American Bottom levee system.

Prenzler and Mitchell hashed over ways that Madison County can raise their levee system to the 500 year flood protection level, and if the county can get ahold of some of the $42 million in federal funding lost by the previous administration.  Prenzler says that the more federal funding they can get, the less the project will cost local taxpayers.

According to Prenzler, the Corps' goal is to move forward with the 500-year flood protection project so that it is wrapped up by 2024........

MDC:  Paddlefish Snagging Season Opens Soon........

Thousands of Missouri anglers enjoy Missouri's annual spring paddlefish snagging season, and the Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding anglers that paddlefish snagging season opens March 15, and runs through April 30 for most Missouri waters.

This paddlefish snagging season will be in effect on the Lake of the Ozarks, Truman Lake, and Table Rock Lake.  Paddlefish snagging season for the Mississippi River runs from March 15 through May 15.  There is also a fall season on the river, running from September 15 through December 15.

Thanks to the shape of their snouts, paddlefish are also called spoonbills.  They take 7 - 8 years to grow to legal size, and typically live more than 20 years.  The state record paddlefish harvested in 2015 from Table Rock Lake was 31 years old........

Stage 2 of Dock Expansion

The Picture of the Day.... was sent to us by Little John of Little John's Marine Service

Little John sent us a picture of the 50' ships channel for Grafton Harbor's deck expansion project on it's way from Port Charles Harbor to Grafton Harbor early yesterday morning (02-21-17).  They loaded the beam onto two boats at Port Charles for the trip.  A Port Charles work boat and Grafton Harbor's pontoon boat. To make things even more interesting, they hit a fog bank as soon as they left Port Charles Harbor.

After safely arriving at Grafton Harbor with the 50' beam, they successfully unloaded it onto the dock there in preparation for today's task of manually lifting the beam into place without the use of a crane.

The 50' beam goes on the harbor side of the new deck.

Keep your anchor right here for more updates as this project proceeds.

Mississippi River At Grafton, Illinois

Historic Boat On Loan To The Grafton Visitor Center........

During the mid-20th century, three point hydroplanes, commonly known as pumpkin seed boats, were raced along the Mississippi River.  People bought the boats as kits, built them in their garages, equipped them with outboard motors, and hit the water.

During the Great Flood of 1993, Grafton residents Tom and Lou Lenkman were living in St. Charles, Missouri, and they discovered a vintage pumpkin seed boat washed up along side their dock.  The couple retrieved the vessel, and it hung from their rafters for 14 years.

Fast forward to 2007, and Tom Lenkman, with the help of other members of the Mississippi Valley Chapter of the Antique Classic Boat Society, started restoring the boat.  Now that the pumpkin seed boat has been fully restored, the beautiful final product is on loan to the Grafton Visitor Center, allowing visitors a chance to see a little bit of the history of boat racing in the Riverbend........

USGS Installs Flood Forecasting Equipment........

The U.S. Geological Survey installs and maintains most of the river gauges across the nation, and now, they have started installing webcams on some of the rivers, offering a bird's eye view of the river below.

Paul Rydlund, USGS Supervising Hydrologist says that having a live view of the river will give them an accurate picture of what is actually going on.  Rydlund adds that having a picture helps make sense of odd measurements recorded on the gauge.

The webcams will also be available to the public by visiting the USGS website.  Later this year, the USGS will be installing a webcam at the Fenton gauge along the Meramec River........

Mississippi River Flood Outlook

Northeast Missouri Flood Risk Higher This Year........

The National Weather Service recently announced that their spring flood outlook is including an elevated chance of minor flooding along the Mississippi River that flows past Northeast Missouri.

The flood outlook was prepared by NWS hydrologist Mark Fuchs, and it notes that at this time, there is "no ongoing" flooding within the St. Louis service area, which ranges from Canton to Cape Girardeau.

The flood forecast is based upon several factors in the Mississippi River Basin, including current streamflows, upstream snowpack, soil moisture, and rainfall forecasts........

Levee Upgrades Around Alton Nearing Completion........

The upgrades being made in the Wood River Levee District along Alton's riverfront are nearing completion.  The work going on close to the Alton Marina is expected to be wrapped up sometime in the next month.

Alton Public Works Director Bob Barnhart said that the project was supposed to be finished back in December, however, crews ran into the footings for the old Clark Bridge, and an old railroad bridge.

Barnhart adds that he appreciates the teamwork between the city, the district, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  This multi-million dollar project upgrading the levee within the Wood River Levee District has been going on since 2013........

Officials Discuss American Bottoms Levee Readiness........

Recently, Madison County Board Chainman Kurt Prenzler met with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to talk about funding for the American Bottoms levee system.

Prenzler said that the flooding in 2008 caught everyone off guard, and the Corps required upgrades for the supposed 100 year levees to raise their capacity to 500 year levels.

Reportedly, there have been some issues with the bidding process, however, Prenzler says that he is committed to following the Corps' guidelines while maximizing federal funding assistance for the levee upgrades........

Bridge Remains Offer Unique River Vantage Point........

In Ottawa, Illinois there is a place offering a beautiful view of the Illinois River, as well as a bit of Ottawa history.  Attorney Alan Howarter says that the spot is on the north bank of the river, where Central School was located.

The City of Ottawa intends to one day turn the location into a development featuring an outdoor music venue.  For the time being, keeping the city-owned property presentable is their goal.

When Howarter and two volunteers were clearing brush off of the property, when he spotted the boulders along the bank.  It turns out that the boulders were part of the historic Hilliard Bridge, which was demolished in 1982........

Winter Kill
by jalsails

Whether you believe in climate change or not – I find it odd that I’m spending President’s Weekend (3rd weekend of February) boating on the middle Mississippi. It’s peculiar because for the past quarter century our merry band of friends, offspring, and their springs have spent this particular weekend skiing down the bluffs of the upper Mississippi. That’s downhill, snow skiing where we reveled in temperatures just shy of 30° F. We played outside all day and it felt good to be cold.

Generally, people don’t succumb to winter kill. Bad ankles and metallic knees force a lot of Boomers to set their ski gear out in spring garage sales. Aging and the ravaging effects of disease take folks off the river. Some of those diseases are brought on by the sloth-like

Wouldn't it be nice if all social media were this peaceful?

tendency of people living North of 35° latitude to hibernate during the winter months. The most exercise they get is getting up for snacks during Netflix binges. Post holiday sales blitzes mark down Eddie Bauer and North Face outerwear to at least 60% off MRSP. There aren’t a whole lot of seasons to stay inside. Our closets are stuffed with jackets from the clearance sales of winters past. Pick one and get outside.

The high here today in St. Louis is expected to top 70°. We’re headed back to the river to tend to our sailboat, Ex Libris. There’s nothing we have to do – she’s been decommissioned for the winter and is tethered safely to the dock. We’re restless because Mother Nature is teasing us. Or perhaps, she’s sending forth a not so subtle warning. If it’s this warm mid-winter – imagine the blazing inferno of July.

There are a lot of dead carp decomposing on the river this weekend. Typical for this time of year – much like the winter kill of too much inside screen time. Get on out – it’ll do you good.
