Maybe visit you neck of the woods one day, or come see what the boating fun is like on Lake St Clair.

From Wikipedia Encyclopedia:

Lake St. Clair (French: Lac Sainte-Claire) is a freshwater lake that lies between the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of Michigan. It was named after Clare of Assisi, on whose feast day it was navigated and christened by French Catholic explorers in 1679. It is part of the Great Lakes system, and along with the St. Clair River and Detroit River, Lake St. Clair connects Lake Huron (to its north) with Lake Erie (to its south). It has a total surface area of about 430 square miles (1,100 km2) and average depth of just 11 ft (3.4 m); to ensure an uninterrupted waterway, government agencies on both sides of the lake have maintained a deep shipping channel through the shallow lake for more than a century.

Sea Ray Debuts New L550 Digital Switching System........

Friday evening, Sea Ray was showing off their new L550 to VIP clients on the docks of Yachts Miami Beach.  The new addition to the popular L class series features a digital switching system that is available with a custom-designed user interface in both the l550 Express and Fly models.

Sea Ray product portfolio vice president Ron Berman said that they took a page from Apple with the user interface.  The people already know how to use it, and pretty much all vessel functions can be controlled by any one of four Raymarine screens.

The four touchscreens, two in the cockpit, one on the flybridge, and one below deck, control features on the boat by touching the screen, including dimming the lights, operating windows, and the air conditioning system........

Mississippi River Near New Orleans, Louisiana

Sediment Diversion Permit To Take Two Years........

Louisiana recently learned that they would have to wait about two and a half years to obtain federal permits for a crucial sediment diversion, and plenty of people within the coastal restoration community were shocked.

The majority of people in government expected that the permit process would take twice as long, even after federal officials said they would fast track the application.  The reason is that the state must show that the proposed Mid-Barataria diversion won't violate environmental and cultural protections under 82 federal laws and executive orders.

The fast track effort does not eliminate any of the required steps in the permitting process, rather the project is moved to the front of the line in the permitting process........

River Deepening Project A Priority........

Calling for the deepening of the Lower Mississippi River is a presidential priority, but Paul Aucoin, Port of South Louisiana Executive Director says that federal funding is the key to the project.

Aucoin says that he acknowledges that the process has just begun, but he is hopeful that the Trump administration will keep it on the front burner, as well as call on Congress to approve it.

Recently, Trump had released a list of 50 "Emergency and National Security Projects", which includes dredging the Mississippi River.  Congress had approved the 50 foot channel depth back in 1985, however, it was never funded........

Dam News From Lake Oroville, California

Maintaining Older Dam Designs Challenging........

The widespread destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina spurred federal engineers into action in remake the 1950's era Folsom Dam with the addition off a $1 billion spillway, which is expected to be completed later this year.

The upgrades at the Folsom Dam stands in contrast contrast with the issues affecting the California-operated Oroville Dam.  Last week, thousands of people were ordered to evacuate as an eroded spillway threatened collapse.  If the collapse had occurred, a 30 foot high wall of water would have inundated three counties.

State officials are now being questioned about maintenance at the Oroville Dam, which is the nation's tallest dam at 770 feet, as to why the warnings from environmentalists that the emergency spillway needed to be reinforced were ignored........

Kayaking Accident Claims Man's Life........

Thursday night, a 56 year old man from Weaver, Minnesota died in a kayaking accident on the Mississippi River.  The body of Timothy Carl Heim was found along the riverbank near the Minneiska boat landing after around a four hour search.

Shortly before 9 pm Thursday, an employee of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources called the Winona County Sheriff's office to report a vehicle parked at the boat landing.

The responders figured out that the vehicle's owner had likely gone paddling along the river, and had not returned.  Attempts to contact the Heim were unsuccessful.  Additional responders were called out to search, and he was found shortly before 1 am.  An autopsy will be performed to determine Heim's cause of death........

Mississippi River Flood Forecast

NWS:  Flood Outlook Greater Than Normal........

While there isn't much snow on the ground around the upper portions of the Mississippi River, a wetter than normal 2016 has left the soil already saturated.

Late Thursday, the National Weather Service released their first spring hydrological outlook, which indicated that the flooding potential for this year is near, or slightly above normal.

The report states that the Mississippi River and Wisconsin tributaries are the main places with above normal flood potential.  The warmer temperatures are melting the existing snowpack, meaning snow and rain will be the primary contributors to flooding........

This time of year, however, is a bit challenging.  During the winter freeze-thaw cycle, ice forms on the house that must be dealt with, lest it causes damage to the boat, or worse, causes it to sink.

For the most part, the folks living in the houseboat community near the shore of Latsch Island, believe that being along the Mississippi River is a joy........

Reportedly, a couple had heard a splash, turned, and saw Stallion drive the car into the river.  The police and Memphis Fire Department were working on locating her vehicle, as neither Stallion, nor her car have been found.

Saturday morning, Memphis Police sent up a helicopter, and investigators were going over security camera footage to see if it captured anything.  With the current and depth of the Mississippi River, family members are concerned that nothing may be found........

Saturday's Cleanup--Map and additional info

Hello, everyone!

We are projected to have over 60 volunteers! For this reason, we will likely be covering the entire span of the Great River Road from Alton to Grafton. Here is a map with some of the individual locations we will be dispatching teams to.

For those of you with children, we will ensure that you are working in safe areas that limit exposure to traffic. Additionally, we plan to have plenty of safety vests, gloves, and road signs to make the event as safe as possible.

Additionally, we will conduct a raffle for every ten people in attendance--prizes include your choice of a 1 Mississippi water bottle, 1 Mississippi t-shirt, or the book, Old Man River, by Paul Schneider.

Remember:
•It is projected to be 50-60F during our cleanup, so wear layers. Closed toe shoes and long pants are required.

•Bring a reusable water bottle and/or a coffee mug/thermos. We will have water jugs and coffee, as well as cookies, fruit, and some other snacks.

For those of you who are interested, but may not have RSVPed, this is your last opportunity to do so. We are having cleanups each month, so don't fret if you miss this one.

See you all at the river on Saturday morning! If you need anything, don't hesitate to call me: (618) 520-9749.
Thanks for all of the help!
Tanner

P.S. Masters of the Sky is after the cleanup and only a short drive from the cleanup on Saturday. A great, two-day bird show!

Legislation Focuses On Upper Mississippi Flooding........

Everyone knows that flooding along the Upper Mississippi River not only destroys crops and property, but leaves lasting effects upon the economy, property, and people's livelihood.

When flooding occurs, local and state officials scurry about in an effort to provide relief.  Often knee-jerk reactionary actions are taken, without any thoughts of the consequences in other parts of the Mississippi River Basin.

U.S. Representative Sam Graves, 6th District Missouri,  was involved securing policy language within the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act, which requires the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to develop a flood control plan for the Upper Mississippi River, with consideration to the impact on the entire basin........

The chairman added that he met with the Corps to determine how best to proceed with levee projects.  Prenzler says that he is committed to working with the Corps, and would like to improve their relationship........

Hi Bill,

What can say?

Started off not to spectacular, then it happened. The Sunset that wouldn't quit. Mesmerizing it was! The contrast with the blue clear sky and the red sky at night.

Word of caution to those planning to come out this weekend. The water is 40'. When the sun sets it gets cold fast no matter the outside temperature.

YesterYear's Picture on this Day in 2006 ........ was an entry in the RiverBills.com / Grafton Ferry Picture Contest of 2006 by Lynne Williams.

It's actually a series of pictures.  The first one, shown above, is of the Grafton Ferry crossing the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers.

Put on your life jacket, throw out your anchor and then  click here  to see what happens when the ferry disturbs the flock of white snow geese in it's path !

WOW !

Those birds taking to flight must have been something to see.  Lynne really did a good job capturing it on camera.

I think that the last picture is the very best.  The geese are really thick in it, but you can see the houses of Grafton in the background. Very good picture !

Mark your calendars! Confluence Trash Bash is on March 18th!

Riverboat Model Ties Up At Hannibal Restaurant........

Inside Hannibal's Mark Twain Dinette, a large model of the riverboat Robert E. Lee has been placed near a woodcut relief of the Old South riverboat.

Jody Bogue, owner of the Mark Twain Dinette said that he had been looking for a riverboat model, ever since he saw a similar model in a window in Keokuk.  Bogue snatched up his model after he spotted it on Craigslist.

The details contained in these pieces of art calls up images of the riverboats that had plied the Mississippi River since the early days of Hannibal.  Bogue intends to set the model in a prominent place so it can be seen by all........

Liberty Bank Continuing Amphitheater Sponsorship........

Back in 2014, Liberty Bank of Alton signed a three year, $150,000 sponsorship deal making them the exclusive sponsor of the Alton Riverfront Amphitheater.

The deal included several incentives for the bank, including naming rights for the venue while the contract is in force.  Recently, the city and Liberty Bank agreed to extend the partnership for another two years.

Liberty Bank President Dale Blachford says that the bank is involved because the amphitheater is an excellent venue for Alton, and they want to guarantee it will not only remain, but build upon successes garnered over the past three years........

Boat Sales

January Saw Boat Sales Jump........

Recreational boat builders and dealers started 2017 with high single digit gains during January.  The gains were driven the three vessel types that have been the industry's best sellers since the last recession ended.

In the main powerboat segments, sales increased by 8% to 3,584 boats, and 9.5% industrywide to 5,062 boats, as compared to January 2016.

The sales increases were made amongst fiberglass outboard boats, aluminum fishing and pontoon boats.  While January is typically a slow month, the increases are a good sign for exhibitors at the boat shows........

Mississippi River Flooding Outlook

Will There Be Any Flooding This Year?

On Thursday, the National Weather Service will be releasing their Flood Outlook.  A considerable amount of preparation goes into the creation of a flood outlook.

As the season moves toward late winter, flooding concerns arise with snow and ice melt, even though the amount of snow pack this year is not all that impressive.

This year, the source regions for snow melt in northern and central Minnesota have little snow, and even less water content.  How fast the snow pack melts, and how wet the soil already is factors into the flooding forecast as well........

New Bridge Over The Illinois River Progressing........

Work on the new state-funded $75.1 million bridge carrying Illinois 104 over the Illinois River at Meredosia is a little less than half done, however, the most dramatic part of the project will take place this summer.

According to Ron Archambeau, Illinois Department of Transportation District 6 construction engineer, the most difficult part of the bridge project will be the 590 foot span over the river.

Archambeau says that temporary towers will be erected on the two river piers that will be supporting the tied arch as it is installed piece by piece across the river........

Mississippi River Deepening Project A Priority........

While the deepening of the Mississippi River has been named as a presidential priority, the Executive Director of the Port of South Louisiana Paul Aucoin says that federal funding for the project will be crucial.

Aucoin states that he is encouraged that President Trump's administration will keep the Mississippi River deepening project on the forefront, and will encourage Congress to approve it.

A long-time proponent for deepening the Mississippi River, Aucoin calls the project crucial to the unencumbered movement of cargo, as well as the success of Louisiana's and the nation's economy........

River History....

16 February 1854 in River History

Competition between the boat lines brought about the beginning of racing by the captains. The first boat to come into port was given first chance to unload and to be the first to get away to pick up freight at the next stop. This made it necessary to build faster boats.

Houses were built with lookouts on top making it possible for the people to watch the racing steamers coming into dock. The boats were loaded with freight and crowded with passengers who felt lucky to be aboard during the race.

The townspeople came to the riverfront and cheered as the speeding boats entered the Alton port. The prize was a set of gold covered antlers, which were placed in the pilot house until some other boat defeated the champion.

The boat racing continued until a tragic accident happened. On February 16, 1854, the steamer "Kate Kearney" blew up as she was pulling away from the crowded wharf at St . Louis. Fifty people were killed and twenty-five were badly injured. Some of the passengers and crew were blown into the river and lost. Newspaper criticism of the races and government action brought an end to the reckless races on the Mississippi

Bill,

A few of us got together yesterday at Eagles Landing Marina. (Sunday..02/11/07).
When being close to the river just isn't good enough you have to move the fire onto the river. I know this does not look like a good idea, but Butch said it was fine!!

Thought you might like the pic.

Thanks,

Illinois State:  Don't Eat Too Much Fish........

While the State of Illinois isn't advising people not to eat fish they catch in state waterways, they are saying that some people might want to be careful.

Melanie Arnold, with the Illinois Department of Public Health says that the most recent 'Sport Fish Consumption Advisory' warns that eating too much wild fish may not be very healthy for some people.

Arnold says that women that are pregnant, nursing, or of child-bearing age, or children less than 15 years of age are considered to be a sensitive population, and it is recommended that they eat no more than one meal per week of predator fish, such as bass, crappie, walleye, catfish and trout........

News Release From BoatUS

Two Boating Enthusiasts Set To Lead Congressional Boating Caucus

WASHINGTON, DC, February 13, 2017 – The Congressional Boating Caucus was formed in 1989 as an informal, bipartisan group of US Senators and Representatives to advocate for the interests of the recreational boating industry. Recreational boaters have also benefitted from the Caucus’ leadership on shared issues such as restoration of the Everglades, fisheries management reform, flood protection efforts, and projects that support waterway access.

Today, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) joined with the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) to welcome the new co-chairs of the House of Representatives Recreational Boating Caucus, Representative Lois Frankel (D-Florida) and Representative Tom MacArthur (R-New Jersey).

Representative MacArthur is an active New Jersey shore boater and tourism advocate, while Representative Frankel, a House Infrastructure and Transportation Committee member, hails from the number #1 boating state in the nation and is a boating and angling enthusiast.

“This is exciting news for boaters,” said BoatUS Government Affairs Senior Program Manager David Kennedy. “Representatives MacArthur and Frankel will provide great leadership on issues that matter for those of us who love to spend time on the water.”

Added Kennedy: “Boat owners need the products, competition and innovation that only a strong domestic boating industry can bring. To enable boating to continue to be a $121 billion industry in this country, we need smart long-term sustainable policy on everything from the ethanol mandate to dredging. BoatUS also recognizes NMMA’s great efforts in growing the Caucus.”

Mississippi River Tourism

Commission Calls For Funding.......

During Monday's meeting of the Muscatine County Board of Supervisors, Dan Peterson, a Muscatine County representative on the Mississippi River Parkway Commission, requested funding for the commission.

The commission held their annual meeting on Monday to discuss ways of growing tourism along the Mississippi River.  The commission was originally set up to encourage tourism and enhance the beauty of the Great River Road.

There are 10 counties in Iowa bordering the Mississippi River, however, the commission has been struggling financially.  Peterson requested $500 - $2,000 to support their message.......

California

Lake Oroville Dam Update

The Dam Water Levels Continue To Fall........

California's Department of Water Resources has announced that the water level behind the Lake Oroville Dam is continuing to fall, however, they haven't said by how much.

Officials did say that by Tuesday afternoon, the water level of the reservoir had fallen by 15 feet.  They are hopeful that they will be able to continue using a damaged spillway to lower the reservoir by another 37 feet in order to be ready for Wednesday night's rainfall.

This past weekend, water from the reservoir flowed over an unpaved emergency spillway for about 40 hours, causing significant erosion.  This occurred nearly a week after engineers found a growing hole in the main spillway........

Clark Bridge Set For Lighting Upgrade........

The Illinois Department of Transportation is preparing to make upgrades to the lighting system along Alton's Clark Bridge, which carries U.S. 67 over the Mississippi River.

In the years since the Clark Bridge was completed, the span's originally installed lighting has deteriorated.  Joe Monroe, an engineer with the Illinois Department of Transportation says that the lighting is only about 60% of what it should be.

Monroe said that when the lighting upgrades are made, crews will be installing upgraded LED lighting.  He added that the project will start in the near future, but would not offer an exact time work would begin........

News Release From BoatUS

ALEXANDRIA, VA, February 13, 2017 – How do you get the right boat loan for your new or previously owned dream boat? Here are 10 tips from Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) just in time for the winter buying season.

1. Check your credit: Before applying for a loan, ensure your credit report is accurate, and get your current credit score. The closer to 700 and higher, the better the rate you'll get. A free copy of your credit report is available annually from each of the three national credit bureaus at www.annualcreditreport.com. To get your credit score, first try checking with your credit card issuer or bank you do business with. If it’s not provided, you will need to speak to a credit counselor, use a fee-based service or purchase it from the credit bureau. More at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

2. Find the right loan type: A fixed-rate, fixed-term, simple-interest loan is the most common. This offers the same monthly payment for the life of the loan. Variable rate or hybrid options may offer a combination of a fixed rate for a few years then a variable rate. With interest rates forecasted to rise in 2017, the appeal of variable rate loans may increase. Don’t forget to ask if there are prepayment penalties for paying off the loan early.

3. Compare loan rates: Generally, rates are lower and available loan terms are longer for newer boats and larger loan amounts. However, each is dependent on a variety of factors including model year, loan amount and down payment. Be prepared for lenders to require larger down payments, have higher rates and offer shorter terms on older boats, especially those over 20 model years. There could also be a .25 percent rate difference between some consecutive model years, so be sure to talk with your lender and understand their rate and term structure.

4. Don’t be fooled by ads: You may see rates advertised as low as 3.99 percent, but there usually will be some small print that could make that loan less attractive. For instance, the rate might only be fixed for a few years or the loan period might be only seven years.

5. Get pre-approved: Ask if you can get preapproval, or if your lender allows you to start the underwriting process before you have a signed sales agreement. This may save some time.

6. Consider a HELOC: Thinking of using a home-equity line of credit (HELOC) to buy your boat? This might work if you have equity in your home and you plan to pay the boat off while interest rates remain relatively low. Unsecured loans (loans not secured by your boat) are also an option for well-qualified individuals.

7. Explore tax benefits: A boat can qualify as a second-home loan interest deduction if it has a berth, head and galley, so buying a boat just large enough to have these features could offer a tax advantage. There's an overall limitation on the second-home deduction. You can only deduct two homes, and it can't total more than $1 million in loans. If you count the HELOC, the threshold is $1.1 million.

8. Get it surveyed: So you've secured the loan and found the boat you've wanted. Hang on! While you might think the boat is perfect, hire a qualified marine surveyor to inspect the boat to ensure it is in good condition and you won’t have any unexpected repair bills. A list can be found at BoatUS.com/surveyors. Also, many lenders will require a marine survey.

9. Ask about closing costs: As with any loan, there are some fees involved – sales tax, processing fee, and title and registration fees are common. Check with your lender to find out what to expect.

10. Calculate your monthly payment: Wondering how much of a loan you can afford? Check the BoatUS online calculator at BoatUS.com/calculator to compute monthly payments. Your lender will also review your debt ratio and other criteria.

Missouri River Near St. Joseph, Missouri

Volunteers Sought To Capture Pallid Sturgeon........

The Missouri Department of Conservation is looking for volunteers to help collect pallid sturgeon along the Missouri River near St. Joseph, Missouri.

MDC biologists are asking for the public to volunteer to help out with running trot lines, which will catch the endangered fish, who will be taken to hatcheries to provide broodstock that will spawn the next generation.

According to resource staff scientist Thomas Huffmon, an unknown factor is preventing the pallid sturgeon eggs from growing into 4 month old fish, preventing the species from being self-sustaining........

Lake Oroville Dam Update

Dam Managers Warned Of Flood Concerns 12 Years Ago........

More than a decade ago, local governmental officials and environmental activists warned of the possibilities of catastrophic flooding below the Lake Oroville Dam.  Back in 2005, environmental groups asked federal regulators to require the California Department of Water Resources reinforce the hillside with concrete or boulders to prevent erosion.  The recommendation was discounted.

Over the weekend, rain-swollen water behind the dam began flowing down the emergency spillway, which is an unpaved slope.  This has caused heavy erosion, and raised fears that a big breach could open, sending a 30 foot high wall of water down the Feather River, destroying thousands of homes.

By Monday, the water level in the Lake Oroville reservoir dropped, easing flooding fears somewhat.  More rain is in the forecast, and residents are still not being allowed to return home........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Local Captains Helping With Boater Safety........

A new organization has popped up at the Lake of the Ozarks, which is intended to promote and improve boater safety.  Called the Lake of the Ozarks Captains Association, the organization is unique in that only captains licenses by the U.S. Coast Guard may join.

LOTOCA is headed up by long-time captains Doug Beck and Bob May, and works to bring together licensed captains that can operate vessels from small passenger vessels to 200 ton vessels such as tour boats, towboats, water taxis, and charter boats.

Beck and May are also members of the Lake of the Ozarks Water Safety Council, and they saw a need for an organization that will assist boaters, using USCG licensed captains to offer boating sessions, familiarize boaters with the rules of the road, improve their boating skills, and make the Lake a safer place........

Missouri River Management

Corps Lowering Reservoirs To Prepare For Spring Runoff........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is lowering the levels of the Upper Missouri River Reservoirs in order to be ready for the spring runoff, which will be coming soon.

Jody Farhat, chief of the Missouri River Basin Water Management Division, says that all of the flood control capacity in the Mainstem Reservoir System is ready to store the spring runoff, lowering the chances of flooding, while supporting other authorized river uses.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers River Water Management Division reports that as of December 18, all of the stored water from 2016 has been sent downstream.  The latest runoff predictions for the Missouri River Basin above Sioux City, Iowa is 103% of normal........

Lake Oroville Near Oroville, California

Evacuation Ordered In Light Of Potential Dam Failure........

Sunday afternoon, the California Department of Water Resources ordered an evacuation of residents near the Oroville Dam, as the emergency spillway severely eroded.

The spillway erosion could cause a release of uncontrolled floodwaters from Lake Oroville.  On Saturday, water began flowing over the emergency spillway dam for the first time in it's nearly 50 year history.

Officials have said that thanks to heavy rainfall, water will continue to flow over the emergency spillway at the nation's tallest dam for the next several days.  Water has also flowed over the main spillway, which was severely damaged by erosion........

Cruise Ships May Be Stopping........

The City of La Crosse is known for their tourism industry, a considerable amount of which revolves around the Mississippi River.  City officials are hopeful that a new boat landing in Riverside Park  may lure more tourists to the region.

Steve Carlyon, Parks and Recreation Director says that Viking Cruise Lines had contacted the city, with the hopes of making La Crosse one of their docking sites for a new Mississippi River cruise from St. Louis to Minneapolis.

Carlyon said that to accommodate a large vessel, specialized docking systems will need to be in place, so the cruise ship can pull up to it, offload passengers, and load them back aboard.  The project would also include docking facilities for transient boaters as well........

Historic Mississippi River Vessels

Steamboat 'Champion' Part Of Lumber Transportation Fleet........

Knapp, Stout & Company was the largest white pine lumbering operations in the world.  It was based in Menomonie, Wisconsin at the confluence of  Wilson Creek and the Red Cedar River, offering easy access to the Chippewa River, a tributary of the Mississippi River.

In order to keep up with demand for lumber, Knapp, Stout & Co. maintained their own fleet of steamboats to transport lumber to markets reached by the Mississippi River, as well as it's tributaries.

One of these vessels was the Champion, a small steamer powered by side-mounted paddlewheels.  The sole purpose of the Champion and boats like her was to push large rafts of lumber down the Mississippi River to the company's retail/wholesale market located in St. Louis, Missouri........

NTSB:  Safety Risks Increased Along Shared Waterways........

On Thursday, the National Transportation Safety Board released a report that identifies the risks linked with the shared usage of America's Marine Transportation System by commercial and recreational vessels.

During the past several decades, both commercial and recreational vessel traffic has increased, causing risk factors to rise as well.  Between 2008 and 2014, the number of canoers, kayakers, and stand-up paddleboarders rose by about 22%.

The combination of different waterway users, combined with their differences in experience, boat handling skills, and navigational knowledge adds to the safety risk.

In their safety recommendation report, Shared Waterways:  Safety of Recreational and Commercial Vessels in the Marine Transportation System, the NTSB determined that all recreational vessel operators should acquire a minimum amount of boating safety education in order to mitigate risks........

River Drawdown Begins On Sunday........

Beginning on Sunday, the Mississippi River near St. Cloud, Minnesota will be two feet lower.  According to City Engineer Steven Foss, the drawdown will be upstream of the St. Cloud Hydroelectric Facility.

The drawdown is part of the current project involving the replacement of old manual trip-gates with modern automated gates.  During periods of high water flow in the spring, the gates are tripped open, and remain that way until staff could manually raise them safely.

This project started back in July 2016, and is expected to be wrapped up around the end of February.  The drawdown of the Mississippi River will continue through Wednesday........

A Look At The New Tools To Prevent Meramec River Drownings........

Earlier in the week, Fox 2 and News 11 had the opportunity to take a peek at the new tools the Metro West Fire Protection District acquired to save lives and prevent drownings.

The Meramec River at Castlewood State Park has become notorious for drownings, and is the focal point for the life-saving efforts of the MWFPD.

The last time the MWFPD was called out to the Castlewood's river access, two people had drowned.  Just downstream from where people safely wade in the water, there is an 18 foot drop off, which also has an increase in current........

Viking River Cruises Still Heading For The Quad Cities........

Back in 2015, international company Viking River Cruises announced plans for building a passenger cruise vessel and dock in the Quad Cities, however, there has yet to be updates on the project.

During the February 2 edition of the Good Morning Quad Cities' Breakfast With segment, Joe Taylor of the Quad Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the Viking still intends to come to the region.

Taylor says that the issue is that Viking River Cruises is an international company, and getting the necessary paperwork and meeting all of the regulations required for having passenger ships on the Mississippi River is taking longer than anticipated........

The Merchants Bridge spanning the Mississippi River at St. Louis links the town with Amtrak and all six Class I railroads.  The bridge was built in 1890, and if it doesn't receive a $219 million renovation, it will be shut down within 10 years.

Currently, rail traffic along the Merchants Bridge is restricted to one train crossing at a time on the double tracks, and none of the cars can be overweight.  Speed is limited to 5 MPH as well.

Tohatsu Releasing Propane Powered Outboard........

Tohotsu America Corporation recently announced that their new 5 HP liquefied petroleum gas outboard will be available for purchase in April.

Bill Would Bar Fish Farming In The Great Lakes........

U.S. Representative Dan Kildee of Michigan is sponsoring a bill that would prohibit farming fish within United States waters in the Great Lakes.

The proposed legislation would also place a ban on aquaculture along rivers designated as wild and scenic, unless the facilities have demonstrated that they won't discharge pollutants into the river........
