The Delta Queen

Mississippi River At Kimmswick, Missouri

The Delta Queen Is Closer To Cruising Again........

Last week, legislation that will allow the historic Delta Queen to resume overnight cruises along the Mississippi River passed through a Senate committee.  The bill exempts the sternwheeler from a federal law that prohibits wooden vessels from carrying passengers on overnight cruises.

Leah Ann Ingram, the chief operating officer for the Delta Queen Company said that the legislation was almost pushed through at the end of last year in Congress, but they ran out of time.  Ingram adds that getting this waiver approved is a priority of Senators Blunt and McCaskill.

Once the legislation is approved, the Delta Queen Company intends to refurbish the 1920s era vessel, and relocate it to Kimmswick, Missouri.  The company expects to create 170 jobs, and have a $34 million economic impact on the region.  If all goes to plan, the Delta Queen will arrive in Kimmswick by late spring, 2018........

Mississippi River Near Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Whisky Barrels Floating Down River From Kentucky To Louisiana........

Just as it did in the 1800s, premium whisky is once again floating down the Mississippi River, from Owensboro, Kentucky to New Orleans, Louisiana.

Recently, Cane Land Distilling Company teamed up with a Tennessee distillery to bring a 5 year aged whisky to market.  The premium whisky will take 10 to 14 days to float down the Mississippi River aboard a barge.

Once the whisky arrives in New Orleans, the whisky will take a short trip up to Baton Rouge, where the sprit will be finished in French cognac barrels at the Cane Land Distilling Company.  The whisky is expected to be available for sale in the spring of 2017........

The Natchez

Mississippi River Near New Orleans, Louisiana

Last Truly Steam Operated Sternwheeler Cruises New Orleans........

There are plenty of reasons why cruising the Mississippi River aboard the Natchez is a cool way to see New Orleans.  One reason is that the Natchez is the only true steamboat on the Mississippi River.  This gives passengers a look back at the time when people traveled by steam-powered vessels.

The Natchez is an iconic part of the New Orleans riverfront.  She was christened in April of 1975, and while other boats claim to be paddlewheelers, the Natchez is the only one that is actually steam powered.

Passengers aboard the Natchez are happy to get the opportunity to check out the steam engines, which are 50 years older than the boat.  They were constructed in 1925.  The Natchez is one of the only cruise boats that allow passengers to check out the engine room........

Mississippi River Health

Floodplain Restoration Helps Heal The River........

At one time, floodplains were the spillover zone along the Mississippi River, but as people settled into the floodplains, the land was converted into farmland, homes and businesses.

Now, around 1,700 miles of levees attempt to keep the Mississippi River in check.  According to John White, a coastal scientist with the Louisiana State University says that these days, it is less of a river, and more of a pipe.

Chemical pollutants, mainly nitrogen fertilizer, have increased dramatically over the past century, and when they reach the Gulf of Mexico, pollutants create a low-oxygen dead zone covering some 5,000 square miles.

White, and other researchers at LSU are looking for ways to remove these pollutants from the river.  One way to accomplish this feat would be to reconnect the Mississippi River to it's floodplains........

Boat Show News

The Miami International Boat Show Is Ready To Go........

The National Marine Manufacturers Association pulled off a major coup when they relocated the Miami International Boat Show from the Miami Beach Convention Center to Virginia Key last year.

Organizers said that they have addressed the issues with getting into and out of the venue, and as a result, they are prepared for the 2017 boat show at the Miami Marine Stadium Park and Basin from February 16 through 20.

NMMA president Thom Dammrich said that he is excited about all of the improvements they've made.  He added that the show will have the largest temporary marina in the world, featuring 565 boats on display in the water........

Boating Opinion

Winter Paddling Can Be As Enjoyable As Summer Paddling........

Larry Whitely, host of the award winning Outdoor World Radio show says that canoe or kayak trips during the winter time can be just as enjoyable as during the summer.

During the winter, sunburn, bugs and the crowds of people are gone.  With the summer crowds gone, the waterways and surrounding woods seem to come alive with wildlife.

There are a few precautions one must take prior to hitting the water in the winter time.  First off, don't go by yourself, set a schedule and keep it.  Advise others where you plan on being.  Secondly, stay dry.  Wear a wetsuit and a lifejacket........

Boat Propulsion Manufacturers

Companies Introduce New Outboards, Propulsion Systems........

A few manufacturers of outboard engines have shifted their focus from high-horsepower engines to mid range offerings.  Yamaha unveiled a lighter weight 90 HP 4-stroke outboard, and Evinrude has debuted several offerings in the 150 - 200 HP range.

As the popularity of wake surfing and other towed watersports has increased, several new wave-shaping propulsion systems have been introduced via partnerships between boat builders and engine manufacturers.

Mercury Marine recently announced that their Joystick piloting system can be used in installations with inboard power.  Sea Ray is using the Mercury Joystick on their new 230-W SLX.  This vessel features inboard power and a system of trim tabs, fins, and ballast control tanks to shape the wake........

Lower Mississippi River

A Look At The Life Of A Master River Pilot........

While it is winter time, the Lower Mississippi River is still open for business.  Captain Jared Austin is certified to pilot vessels between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Louisiana.

Captain Austin is tasked with knowing each bend in the river, as well as how the river changes, dependant upon the weather.  He often pilots vessels loaded with petroleum or toxic chemicals that if spilled during an accident, would cause an environmental disaster.

Captain Austin's first duty is to the safety of the people and waterfront, and to protect them from major catastrophes.  His second duty is to moving commerce.  He believes himself as an essential cog in the global farm to the table chain........

Grass Carp Have Invaded 3 Of The Great Lakes........

The invasive grass carp has been found in three of the Great Lakes, and according to a scientific analysis released Friday, there is still time to keep them from getting out of hand.

U.S. and Canadian researchers have said that grass carp had been discovered in Lake Michigan, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario. Researchers say that some of the grass carp are reproducing, but they're not sure how widely the carp have spread.

Marc Gaden, spokesman for the Great Lakes Fishery Commission said that small numbers of grass carp have been in the Great Lakes for quite some time, but they have been turning up more often as of late........

According to Kathy Cavender, the manager of the Runge Nature Center, several different agencies put a lot of effort into bringing eagles to Missouri, and worked to help them thrive.

During the 1990s, 74 eagles were brought into Missouri.  Last year, the Missouri Department of Conservation conducted a survey which found that there were at least 284 eagle nests in the state........

Coast Guard Building Rowboats........

The U.S. Coast Guard is tasked with keeping tabs on the seas surrounding the United States, policing drug traffickers, making recues at sea, and is now helping kids build rowboats.

According to Petty Officer 2nd Class Cynthia Oldham, Boston area Coast Guard personnel have taken their expertise to the Community Boat Building Center, where they help area 5th graders build life-sized, seaworthy wooden rowboats.

The rowboats are seaworthy enough that when spring rolls around, a party is held where the boats are launched into the water, so they can be enjoyed all summer long........

Ecologist:  Recycle Carp Into Soil........

Chuck Theiling, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers aquatic biologist working with sand removal along the Kankakee River envisions combining his efforts with the campaign to control the invasive Asian carp in the Illinois River.

Theiling's project involves removing sand from the Kankakee River, and blending it with tree waste and treated Chicago Metropolitan Wastewater District biosolids to create a new soil for use in road construction.

Theiling intends to add dead Asian carp to the mix as a way of disposing of them.  Currently, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources is removing carp from the Illinois River, and paying landfills $5,00 per week to dispose of the fish........

Eagle Watching News

The Weekend Should Be Good For Eagle Sightings........

This winter's warmer weather means that spotting bald eagles around the Riverbend is a bit more challenging this year.  Reportedly, there are plenty of resident eagle sightings on area tours.

Over the weekend, hotspots all around Alton, Grafton, and Clarksville will be packed with visitors all hoping to learn about, and possibly spot some American bald eagles.

Chris Hespen, superintendent of Pere Marquette State Park said that the warmer winter temperatures mean that the eagles aren't gathering near open water like they normally would.  Hespen adds that they have not seen a decrease in interest or demand, as environmental education is a crucial pat of conservation........

Confluence Tower Hosting Itchy Brothers........

On Saturday, Luke Harris and Donnie Johnson, the Itchy Brothers chainsaw artists, will be making an appearance at the Lewis and Clark Confluence Tower in Hartford.  The duo will be creating artwork from blocks of wood from 10 am to 4 pm.

This event was originally scheduled for January 14, but had to be rescheduled on account of inclement weather.  The Itchy Brothers take large blocks of wood and using saws, carve American bald eagles or other local wildlife.

Over the past several years, the Itchy Brothers have created their sculptures as part of the annual Eagles Over The Confluence winter events at the Confluence Tower.  They have donated several pieces that are on display at the Tower........

Bill,

Photo taken Saturday, Jan 23, 2010 at My Lady of the Rivers next to Palisades. The forecast calls for rain this afternoon, but it was beautiful this morning. The river takes on a whole different feel in the calm of a cool winter fog. The ice was breaking apart and we watched it drift down river. The gulls were singing and feasting on a bounty of fish breaking over the dike. God willing, I will remember this day at Blessing of the Fleet later this year.

Upper Mississippi River

Study Looks At River Health........

A recent study from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency reports that the waters of the Upper Mississippi River are pristine as they wind through the Brainerd Lakes area, and they must stay that way.

Over a period of 10 years, data was gathered from some 200 sites which shows that the Mississippi River is in great shape from it's headwaters in Itasca State Park through St. Cloud.  The water quality decreases as the river winds it's way to the Twin Cities.

The reason for the degradation is that around St. Cloud, the Mississippi River's surroundings shift from forests and wetlands to farmlands and cities.  At that point, the water no longer meets water quality standards for river life and recreation........

Providence River Near Providence, Rhode Island

Court Orders K-19:  The Widowmaker Sub Removed From River........

A court in Rhode Island recently ordered a scrapyard to remove the remnants of a former Soviet submarine from the Providence River.  The sub, known as Juliett 484, is resting just feet from the shore.

Following the Cold War, the submarine was sold and repurposed as a restaurant and vodka bar in Helsinki, Finland.  It was then used as a set for the 2002 Harrison Ford film, K-19:  The Widowmaker.  The sub then served as a floating museum prior to sinking during a nor'easter in 2007.  It was sold for scrap.

Rhode Island environmental officials sued to have the sub, and several other vessels removed from the riverfront.  In December, a Superior Court judge ordered Rhode Island Recycled Metals LLC to start removing the vessels adjacent to their scrapyard.  The permits have been applied for, but have yet to be issued........

NPS Looking For Input On Future Of St. Anthony Falls Lock & Dam........

About a year and a half ago, the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam shut down in order to protect the Upper Mississippi River from the invasive Asian carp.

As a result, the dam's visitor center is fairly quiet, and the National Park Service is interested in getting public input on what they want to do with the site.  The site dates back to when Minnesota was a territory, and home to flour mills.

John Anfinson with the National Park Service said that they are America's storytellers, and represent the country's best places.  Anfinson adds that the St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam is one of the best places........

Fishing Regulations

Sportfishing Group Upset Over Lead Tackle Policy........

A last minute order by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under President Obama intends to phase out lead fishing tackle of public lands over the next five years.  This move has drawn the ire of the American Sportfishing Association.

Director's Order No. 219 requires that use of non-toxic ammunition and fishing tackle for all activities on U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lands, waters, and facilities by 2022.

ASA vice president of government affairs, Scott Gudes said that the sportfishing industry sees the unilateral policy to ban lead fishing tackle without input from the industry, angling organizations, and state fish and wildlife agencies as a disregard for the economic and social impact the ban will have upon anglers and the fishing industry........

Upper Mississippi River Clean Until The Twin Cities........

Where the Mississippi River begins at Lake Itasca, the water is clean and clear, staying so as it winds it's way through the northern Minnesota wetlands and forests.

By the time the Mississippi River reaches the Twin Cities, it is polluted badly enough to fail standards set by the Federal Clean Water Act for aquatic life and human use.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency recently released a report listing the causes of the water fouling, namely farm runoff, and pollution form cities.  The report also offers solutions to the pollution problem........

Boat Sales

Sales Up During 2016, Growth Slowing........

The most recent Info-Link Bellwether Report reveals that boat sales continued to be up year-over-year during December, however, the rate of growth has slowed down.

The Bellwether Report monitors powerboat sales across the nation based upon new U.S. boat registrations on a rolling 12 month basis.  The Bellwether states are spread all over the country, and represents around half of the U.S. boat market.

For 2016, boat sales were up around 6 percent, down slightly from the annual rate over the last few months, and the lowest year over year increase for any month since 2013.  During 2015, boat sales were up 10% for the year........

Monday evening, the Travel Channel show, Booze Traveler focused on the Mississippi River, with a stop in the Riverbend.  The episode, Twain's Mighty Mississippi featured local eatery Lovett's Snoots, Fish Chicken and More, and river guide company Big Muddy Adventures.

General manager of Big Muddy Adventures, Roo Yawitz says that they got an email from the Travel Channel asking if they would like to take a television crew on a river adventure.  Big Muddy specializes in canoe and kayak trips, primarily using 24 to 30 foot voyager style canoes.

In addition to the large voyager canoes, Big Muddy offers a full fleet of paddling vessels, including smaller canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards.  Yawitz adds that safety and personal attention is the main focus at Big Muddy, in addition to introducing people to the recreational side of the Mississippi River........

Obama Administration Blocked New Madrid Levee Project........

Conservation group American Rivers lauded the Obama administration's last minute decision to halt the decades-long effort by the U.S. Army corps of Engineers plans for the New Madrid Levee Project.

As a result of this move, floodwaters will still be able to reach some 70,000 acres of floodplain, which nourishes spawning and rearing habitat for fish in the mid-Mississippi River Valley, as well as crucial habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife.

By blocking the levee construction, the New Madrid Floodway, which is located near the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, will be able to safely store floodwaters, protecting communities within the region........

Mississippi River At Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Funding For New Mississippi River Bridge A Priority........

The main project priority for the Baton Rouge Area Chamber is a new Mississippi River Bridge.  On Monday, Chief Executive Officer Adam Knapp said that the $1 billion project is the most costly, as well as the best solution for traffic congestion.

Knapp says that 2017 is the year that they must make sure that they make investments in traffic and transportation.  He adds that a new Mississippi River bridge is a business imperative, and several decades overdue.

Over the past several years, major investments from the chemical and petrochemical industry has fueled the addition of thousands of jobs, and without the infrastructure investments to reduce traffic congestion, the areas growth may slow........

Mississippi River History

The Mississippi River Was The Heart Of Cross Country Trade........

The Mississippi River flows through 10 states, and a lot of people only see it as some running water.  In America's early years, the Mississippi River was the cornerstone of cross-country trade, from crops and goods to slaves.

For some of the slaves, one shore represented slavery, while the other shore represented freedom........

Missouri River Management

Commercial Interests Back Plan That Ends Spring Rises........

A three year project to change the way that the Missouri River is managed is drawing to a close, and commercial interests along the river want a management plan that does away with increase flows to promote the recovery of the pallid sturgeon.

The current plan has the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers increasing the releases from upstream dams during March and May as a way to signal the pallid sturgeon to spawn.  The plan has only been used a few times, as the corps doesn't increase flows when high water further downstream could cause flooding.

Among the proposed plans are some that would increase the amount of water released, up to 60,000 cubic feet of water per second, and set higher standards for water downstream.  According to Tom Waters, chairman of the levee association, for every 10,000 cfs increase, the water rises about an extra foot on flood gauges........

LOTO Shootout Considers Expanding No-Wake Zone........

On Monday, the Missouri State Highway Patrol will be hosting a town hall meeting to gather public input on whether the No-Wake Zone before and after the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout should be expanded to protect dock owners and boaters.

Mississippi River Near La Crosse, Wisconsin

Responders Called Out The River For False Alarm........

At around 10 am Sunday morning, several dozen responders were called out to the Mississippi River near La Crosse for a report of a possible boat sinking.

La Crosse Fire Department Captain Jeff Schott said that a person near the river reported hearing an airboat leaving a landing, followed by a loud noise, like a crash.  The person called 911 after no other sounds were heard.

Just before launching rescue boats, an airboat was spotted in a backwater across the river.  The boat's driver said that when they left the landing, they struck a chunk of ice.  the driver shut down the engine, then restarted it at a lower RPM and continued across the river........

Missouri River Management

River Coalition Prepping Farmers For Corps' Meetings........

The Coalition to Protect the Missouri River recently held meetings with farmers all across Missouri in order to prepare for the upcoming U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Environmental Impact Statement draft.

Coalition head Dan Engemann reports that the Corps has put forth six alternatives, several of which will involve increasing releases from the Gavins Point Dam in South Dakota.  This will affect the lower Missouri River Basin in order to protect the pallid sturgeon, and a few species of endangered birds.

Engemann said that flow along the Missouri River typically increases in the spring and fall, and by reducing freeboard on levees, interior drainage, crop production and yield, harvest and planting is affected, therefore farmers need to be aware of this and get involved.........
