Winter Over
January 8, 2017 ~ jalsails

South Pole Marker. Image courtesy NOAA

We northerners expect and generally prepare for cold and darkness every winter but our mind-bodies seem to favor hot, bright summer days. My closet is crammed with high tech outerwear that lies dormant despite Mercury levels that have sunk to the teens. Sporadic urges to don layers of fleece and down are no match for a primordial desire to winter over within the heat radius of our fireplace. My MacBook Pro serves as a lap warmer. A muffled subconscious whisper is counseling me to get out of this rut or succumb to the Arctic Syndrome.

This is the season of the Arctic Stare, a look described by polar researchers as a 12 foot stare in a 10 foot room. During winter our minds periodically slide into fugue states. Our thoughts are aswinter blank as empty sonnets. Many northerners describe winter moods as depressed and irritable. They go to bed early to avoid the boredom associated with long, dark evenings but have trouble sleeping. Folks dismiss absentmindedness as a symptom of Cabin Fever. Some feel lonely but don’t return calls or set up play dates. They get iced in.

Oxbow Lake.....
An oxbow lake is a U-shaped body of water that forms when a wide meander from the main stem of a river is cut off, creating a free-standing body of water. This landform is so named for its distinctive curved shape, resembling the bow pin of an oxbow

Mississippi River At Burlington, Iowa

The Rising River Plateaus At Moderate Flood Stage........

Friday and Saturday, the Mississippi River rose nearly four and a half feet, but on Sunday morning, it reached a plateau of 16.77 feet, and remained there.

The rapid increase in the river level was due to an unusually large ice jam along the Mississippi River, near the mouth of the Skunk River.  Thankfully, the quickly rising water hasn't caused damage yet.

The Mississippi River rose too quickly for city workers to be able to erect sandbag barriers, leaving the riverfront to the mercy of the freezing river.  The river encroached on the boat ramp parking lots, and the Port of Burlington, but is not expected to rise any more........

Upper Missouri River

Full Flood Capacity Available For 2017........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Missouri River Water Management Division reports that the full flood control capacity of the Missouri River main-stem reservoir system will be available for 2017.

Jody Farhat, chief of the Corps Missouri River Water Management Division says that the releases from the Gavins Point Dam were reduced from 18,000 cubic feet per second to the normal winter flow of 17,000 cfs.

Unless conditions change, the Corps will keep the Gavins Point Dam flowing at 17,000 cfs through February.  The forecast calls for normal amounts of runoff into the Missouri River System during 2017........

Mercury Marine Introduces Joystick Controls To Tow Vessels........

Mercury marine has announced that they have launched the joystick piloting system for inboards in single-engine tow sports boats.

Snoqualmie River Near North Bend, Washington

Hikers Come Across A Rare Ice Circle In Washington River........

Saturday morning, some hikers in Washington State came across a bit of an unusual natural phenomenon:  an ice circle spinning on the Snoqualmie River.

An ice circle forms along the outer bends in rivers, where accelerating water creates a rotation.  As the ice spins, it grinds against the surrounding ice, smoothing it into a circle.

Ice circles, sometimes referred to as ice discs, are fairly uncommon.  One of the earliest recorded incidences of a slowly revolving ice disc was made on the Mianus River in 1895........

Eagle Ice Festival Educates While Entertaining........

Attendees of the Alton-Audubon Eagle Ice Festival had the opportunity to meet a living bald eagle named Liberty.  He is a 25 year old rescued eagle, weighing in at 8 pounds, and boasting a six foot wingspan.

While the male and female eagles share the same colorings, World Bird Sanctuary volunteer, Jennifer Jones says that it is fairly easy to tell the two apart.  The males are smaller than the female.  Jones added that the female is 1/3 larger, and stronger than the males.

During Saturday's kick-off event for the bald eagle watching season, ice sculptures filled a downtown Alton parking lot.  Ice sculptor John Russell of Kirkwood, Missouri was on hand creating ice sculptures of eagles using ice picks, grinders, and a chain saw........

The River Was Blessed In Celebration of Epiphany........

On Saturday, church members from three different Memphis congregations braved freezing temperatures to bless the waters of the Mississippi River.

Around 100 people gathered along the bank of the Mississippi River near Mud Island to celebrate Epiphany, which commemorates John the Baptist baptizing Jesus Christ in the Jordan River.

The Mississippi River was blessed by placing a cross into the river, as Clergy asked God to bless Memphis, via the source of life, water.  The event was organized by members of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox church, St. John, and Saint Seraphim orthodox churches........

The Floating Circus Was Quite The Spectacle In 1852........

On August 21, 1852, the chiming peal of 20 bells heralded the arrival of the Spalding and Rogers' Floating Palace along the Hannibal riverfront.

Likely one of the stranger looking vessels to ply the Mississippi River, the Floating Palace brought entertainment unlike anything that had ever been seen in the developing river town of Hannibal.

The Floating Palace was 200 feet long by 60 feet wide, and the construction and operation of the water-bound entertainment venue was considered to be a modern marvel.

The circus venue replaced the typical canvas tent with a climate controlled, gas lit, comfortable theater-like scene, with 1,100 cane bottom arm chairs sold on reserve basis, 900 gallery seats, and the family circle, 500 cushioned settees for another 500 people........

Dave Ash Service

Saturday, January 7, 2016

Dave Ash, former member of Con Trios Yacht Club, passed away on 12/24/2016 after a battle with Leukemia.  Some of you may remember Dave and Carrie as the owners of Cedar Hill Resort on the river, some as dock mates at Yacht Club of St. Louis, but to all a true friend.

Dave’s service will be Saturday, January 7, 2016, 3:00 p.m. at Baue Funeral Home at the Cave Springs Exit, 3950 W Clay St, St Charles, MO 63301. Afterward we will celebrate his life at the O’Fallon Elks, 1163 Tom Ginnever Ave, O’Fallon, and MO. At the Elk’s we will have food, an open bar and music by the D Dock DJ’S. I will have a bus to take anyone who would like to get a room at either the Drury Inn, 170 Mid Rivers Mall Circle, St. Peters, 636-937-9700 or the Comfort Inn at 100 Comfort Inn Circle, O’Fallon, MO 636-696-8000. The party at the Elk’s was supposed to be his birthday party in March and he wanted it now. I do hope you can attend to celebrate Dave’s life with his kids and me. His ashes cannot be ready this week so instead of having everyone take off work for a couple hours then come to a party later in the week I decided to hold off. He also has family in Texas that would like to be here.

Thank you again for all your love and support. He was blessed to have all of you in his life. I hope your life is better because you knew him.

Boat dealers saw 2016 end on a sour note, as same-store sales fell 10.1% during the month of December.  This was the first year-over-year decrease in same-store sales since June 2016.

Unit sales decreased by 14.1% in December, the biggest decrease since October of 2014.  In comparison, November's unit sales were quite strong, showing an increase of 16.3%.

Service department revenues were down as well, falling 12.5% year-over-year, marking the largest decrease since January 2015.  This ended five straight months of revenue gains in the service department........

Grain Shipper Overcomes Obstacles To Build Grain Elevator........

After three years of gathering the necessary permits to proceed, Greg Dolbeare, owner of Sny Island Merchandising Co. can watch construction begin on his new grain elevator and barge loading business.

Back in 2005, Dolbeare purchased 70 acres of land adjacent to the Sny Island Levee near Pike Station, Illinois, where the business will be located.  Construction is expected to begin this spring.

The grain elevator/barge loading facility will be a multi-million dollar project.  Currently, there are ten steel plate pilings jutting out into the Mississippi River, which will eventually support a conveyor belt transporting grain from an elevator to an awaiting barge........

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE
BOARD OF DIRECTORS

It is in our nature to resist change.
Yet as adults we've learned that sometimes change, although difficult, may yield a new beginning and foster future growth. It is with heavy hearts that we announce to you the Duck Club Owners and Social Members that after
19 years of incredible service and friendship, the board of directors have decided to not renew the current restaurant contract.

We wish Mark Bachman and his crew fair winds and following seas in their new endevours.

This change was not made lightly. It comes after hundreds of hours of deliberation and careful thought. We are excited about what the future holds and look forward to making an announcement very soon regarding the new direction that our restaurant and club will be taking.

Coast Guard:  Ohio River Test Bed Looks At Future Of Navigation........

Each year, bushels of crops, tons of cargo, and billions of barrels of oil travel along America's rivers en route to stores and gas stations.  Approximately 15% of America's freight travels along the Ohio, Mississippi and Missouri Rivers.

The U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are partnering up to determine what equipment and infrastructure is needed to modernize the U.S. waterways, making them safer, more resilient, and more efficient.

Louisville, Kentucky has been chosen as the location for the Ohio River Enhanced Marine Safety Information (e-MSI) test bed.  Coast Guard Captain Scott J. Smith, chief of the Office of Navigation Systems said that the test site will help improve service delivery along the inland waterways, as well as the entire Marine Transportation System........

Lower Mississippi River

Navigation Channel To be Deepened To 50 Feet........

Last month, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released a plan to deepen portions of the Mississippi River's navigation channel, including portions between New Orleans and Baton Rouge to 50 feet.  Currently, the channel is between 42 and 47 feet deep.

The dredging project would allow ports along the lower Mississippi River, such as Plaquemines, New Orleans, and South Louisiana, to accept the larger neopanamax vessels, which were designed to take advantage of the newly expanded Panama Canal.

U.S. ports along all three coasts have performed similar dredging projects, or have applied for permission to do so.  The Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act was recently approved, and would fund these types of projects........

A Few Tips For Watching Eagles........

The frequent freezing temperatures throughout December have already drawn in quite a few bald eagles into the Quad City region locks and dams on the Mississippi River corridor.

The turbulence created below the dams keeps the water from freezing over, allowing the eagles to have a bountiful feast of stunned fish.  Experts add that wooded areas overlooking the water offer prime roosting habitats for migrating wildlife.

Depending upon the weather, bald eagles should remain in the region through February.  To better your odds of spotting eagles while they're around, experts have offered a few eagle watching tips:

○  Be patient, make sure you have time to spare.

○  Arrive early, as eagles are typically active from sunrise to around 11 am.

○  Be quiet and still........

Proposal To Redevelop River Port Moves Forward........

A former port along the Mississippi River in northern Minneapolis, Minnesota is moving closer to being redeveloped as a mixed-use site, boasting parkland and an amphitheater.

This week, the City Council and Park Board committees approved plans to work with United Properties to redevelop a 48 acre site known as the Upper Harbor Terminal.

There will be more planning once all parties negotiate and formally approve an exclusive rights agreement.  It is believed that the conceptual design process will take at least a year, with more time needed for detailed design and construction plans........

Families Enjoy The Loading Dock's Ice Rink........

While many people were off work and school on Monday, many in Grafton chose to head to The Loading Dock in order to hit their ice rink.

During the better part of the year, The Loading Dock is the home of the region's largest flea markets, but when the weather cools, it gets transformed into a large indoor skating rink, making it a great year-round destination.

The ice rink is located at one end of the large covered structure, and the other end is occupied by cafe tables, chairs, flame heaters and refreshments........

Dave Ash Passed Away

Service ...Saturday, January 7, 2016

Dave Ash, former member of Con Trios Yacht Club, passed away this morning (12/24/2016) after a battle with Leukemia.

NMMA Discusses Last Year's Legislative Victories........

Other notable accomplishments include the reauthorization of the Water Resources Development Act.  The NMMA says that the law, also known as the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act, will provide funding for crucial waterways infrastructure projects, such as dredging and navigation programs.

The annual "Polar Bear Plunge" tradition is continuing. Here are a couple pics from the one in my hometown of Fenton. The group has been doing this for many years and go by the name of "Fenton Polar Bear Club". Below are links to more pictures and a video of the event. Air and water temps were both in the low to mid 30s on the Meramec River. I've also included a couple pics of a group of Kayakers doing their annual trip down the Meramec River.

Santa Skiied For The New Year's Day Polar Bear Ski Event........

On New Year's Day, 57 year old Kevin Day of Chesterfield put on his Santa Claus costume, and hopped onto water skis on the Mississippi River in front of the Gateway Arch,

Day, who has been doing this for 31 years, and a few other water skiers hit the Mississippi River to put on a show and raise funds for the Missouri Disabled Water Ski Association.  Day set up the association nine years ago in order to help disabled athletes improve their quality of life through water skiing.

Moments after hopping off of his water skis, Day jumped into a cooler full of hot water.  The other water skiers soon followed suit, seeking immediate relief from the cold.  Day said jokingly that the best part of the performance was the end........

Meramec River Neat Fenton, Missouri

After A Year, Flood Restoration Continues........

A year ago, a rare winter flood demolished portions of suburban St. Louis, the worst was along the Meramec River in the southern portions of the region.

Even now, businesses and residents are still working to clean up.  According to Fenton Alderman Joe Maurath, things have not returned to normal, and it seems that every time you turn around, something else comes up.

Officials say that more than 7,000 structures were damaged, to wastewater plants were knocked offline, and sand from the Meramec River was deposited onto the golf course at the Riverside Golf Club........

Mississippi River Near Winona, Minnesota

A Stranded Kayaker Was Rescued From The River........

Last week, a stranded kayaker was rescued from the Mississippi River near Winona.  At around 3:30 pm Thursday afternoon, Winona County Sheriff's deputies, the county dive team and other responders turned out for a report of a kayaker stranded in the middle of the Mississippi River's main channel.

A witness told dispatchers that a kayaker was in distress, and having difficulty returning to shore.  Reportedly, the kayaker had fallen into the river, and the kayak had become wedged into a crack in the ice.  The man was able to climb up onto the ice.

Local anglers Myles Rolbiecki and Larry Kronebusch put in a large flat-bottomed boat, and were able to make their way to the paddler.  The pair pulled the man and his boat aboard, and got him back to shore.  The paddler, 56 year old Timothy Heim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries........

It’s the last day of a year that sped by at warp speed during the wholesome days and glacially when times turned harsh. Confucius said, “Time flows away like time in a river.” Some people approach life by going with the flow wherever it may take them. Not me. I know rivers. Sure, they are fun to play on and pretty to look at but they can't be trusted. Their flow is often unpredictable and impossible to control from a boat. Rivers flow into dark and scary places, breech their banks, and and lay havoc to land. They have a perverse habit of changing everything they pass through.

The Picture of the Day.........    Were sent to us by Glenn and Greg Sadowski

Hello Riverbill,

Below is a Dropbox link that contains all of the Group photos that I took from the HMS Destiny cruises of 2016. It would be terrific if you could post them.
I would like to thank you as well as everyone that helped out and to those that attended these cruises, and of course especially to "The Henry". We had a lot of good times this past year.

Most sincerely,
Glenn (and Greg) Sadowski

Bill,

Wow! What a year! So many people! So many new friends!

"We would like to thank the management and staff at the Alton Marina, Grafton Marina and My River Home.

I would like to personally thank some of the Destiny crew. Capt. Glenn and Capt. Greg Sadowski, John Morgan, Stephanie and Bob, Ramjet and so many others that stepped up to pitch in with such enthusiasm. Without these people, the famed HMS Destiny wouldn't have left the dock, nor provided the exceptional experience to so many. We look forward to 2017. We already have a number of great cruises scheduled, and will be adding more.

Wishing all of our new friends, a very happy and prosperous New Year."

Thank you.

Capt. Henry

After One Year, Residents Still Await Levee Repairs........

On January 1, 2016, the Mississippi River overtopped the Len Small Levee, and began to wash out a portion of that levee.  One year later, residents in Alexander County, Illinois  are still awaiting levee repairs.

Alexander County Chairman Chalen Tatum said that they had thought the levee would have been repaired by now, since other counties along the river have had their levees repaired.

Earlier in the year, the county made several applications for funding, however, the requests were declined.  It seems that the county will have to rely on farmers and residents to rebuild the levee themselves........

Dave Ash Passed Away

Dave Ash, former member of Con Trios Yacht Club, passed away this morning (12/24/2016) after a battle with Leukemia.

Love Carrie

Eagles Have Returned To The Tri-State Area........

Clarksville, Missouri, Quincy, Illinois, and Keokuk, Iowa have once again become eagle watching hotspots, as the bald eagles have returned to the region.

There are several eagle watching programs slated for the region, and one of the biggest eagle watching programs will be held in Clarksville over the weekend of January 28 and 29.

Clarksville's Eagle Days celebration is hosted by the Missouri Department of Conservation, and will feature spotting scopes along the Clarksville riverfront near Lock and Dam No.24........

Meramec River Near Pacific, Missouri

Progress Being Made On Bend Bridge Replacement........

Thanks to the mild winter so far, crews have been able to make progress on a project to construct a new bridge over the Meramec River at Pacific, Missouri.

The current one lane span was built in 1918 to allow residents living along the southwestern side of the river to have access to Pacific.  The eastern approach to the current bridge is at right angles to the bluff, which prohibits fire trucks and large vehicles from using it.

When ground was broke on the project in early October, Franklin County Presiding Commissioner John Griesheimer said that the main beneficiaries of the new span will be fire trucks and large busses that will be able to use the new crossing........

Missouri River History

Severe Flooding Along Upper Missouri River In 1881........

Until 1952, the flood of 1881 was the greatest flood to destroy the land that later would become South Dakota.

An early blizzard brought winter to the region in October of 1880, and as the snow began to melt in late April 1881, ice gorges were formed along the Missouri River, causing the river to rise.

Hundreds of residents were driven from their homes. Buildings were swept away, as were 1,300 cattle and 125 horses.  Several steamboats were destroyed, and residents had to fight off roving bands of bandits looking to loot the abandoned homes........
