Riverbend Ferries

Ferries Starting To Resume Operations........

After being shut down for a week, several ferries around the Riverbend region reopened, or will be reopening after the first cold spell of winter froze portions of the river.

The Golden Eagle Ferry, operated by the Calhoun Ferry Co., reopened on Friday, and the Illinois Department of Transportation's ferry crews, who operate the Brussels and Kampsville Ferries, anticipate resuming operations by Tuesday.

All traffic on the river develop issues when ice appears on the water, ferries are typically the first to cease operations.  IDOT's Joe Monroe said that operating ferries is a bit more complicated when it comes to ice.

Monroe said that barges moving up and down the river can push ice out of the way, but ferries crossing the river capture ice along their upstream side, causing issues with turning around for the return trip, and even docking at the ramp.......

Asian Carp Update

Carp Less Than 50 Miles From Lake Michigan........

Even though the Great Lakes states and the federal government are dedicating funding and brainpower to stopping the invasive Asian carp from reaching the great lakes, the latest news is mixed.

The good news is that the leading edge of the bighead and silver carp population hasn't progressed much recently up the Mississippi River, and the rivers linking the Mississippi River Basin to Lake Michigan.

The bad news is that the juvenile fish are moving closer to Lake Michigan, and over the past year, they have made significant progress toward the lake.

Joel Brammeier, president and CEO of the not-for-profit Alliance for the Great Lakes, the juvenile carp front is advancing, and they still don't have a permanent solution in place that will solve the carp problem........

Work On New Span Still On Schedule........

According to Judy Wagner, the area engineer with the Missouri Department of Transportation, the contractor working on building the new Highway 47 Bridge over the Missouri River at Washington, Missouri is working hard to stay on schedule.

Wagner said that the General contractor, Alberici Constructors Inc. is working as much as necessary , including some longer hours and some Saturdays in order to stay on schedule.

At this time, all of the work is focused on the northern end of the span, where crews are working on the northern land bents, which are bridge foundations constructed on land.  Bridge supports built in the river are known as piers........

Corps Planning Habitat For Fish And Birds........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has proposed new Missouri River habitat for the endangered pallid sturgeon as well as construction of two sandbars for two endangered bird species.

The plan was hatched after three years worth of study by hydrologists, scientists and other specialists.  Over the next 15 years, the plan is intended to help the recovery of the pallid sturgeon, least tern, and piping plover, using the latest scientific data.

There are some stakeholders that are familiar with the plan, who say that these recommendations are not necessary.  According to Bill Beacom, member of an advisory group that consults with the Corps, the Missouri River Recovery Implementation Committee, the tern and plover populations are recovering on their own........

Runoff Into The Missouri River Expected To Be Normal........

With winter just starting, the spring run-off season is still quite a ways off into the future.  Forecasters, however, are looking ahead to what the run-off season could bring.

Doug Kluck, central region climate service director for the National Weather Service said that initial indications are that the runoff into the Missouri River Basin shouldn't be an issue.

The U.S. Amy Corps of Engineers has announced that the six main stem reservoir along the Upper Missouri River should have the full 16.3 million acre feet of flood storage available in the spring........

Fishy Tales From Ohio's Chagrin River

Anglers Catch A Frozen Constrictor In The River........

While fishing in the Chagrin River, two fishermen came across something quite unexpected, a frozen sixteen foot constrictor half in the water.

Sam Lincoln, and another man were fishing a run, when they spotted the constrictor wrapped around a log, and half in the freezing water.  Lincoln said that it took them awhile to free the snake up and pull it onto the riverbank.

According to Mike Durkalec, an aquatic biologist with Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, he has had two incidences where constrictors were found dead along the waterways this time of year.  He added that they were likely pets that were released when they got too big.......

During this year's New Year's Eve celebration at Captain Ron's, the crowd will be celebrating more than just the end of 2016, they will also be celebrating the 10th anniversary of Captain Ron's.

Initially, Ron Duggan and his wife Nicole were picturing condominiums when they saw the property at the 34.5 Mile Marker on the Lake of the Ozarks, but that vision evolved into a resort and entertainment destination.

Duggan took a neglected property, and transformed it into the event hotspot on the lake.  For 2017, Captain Ron's will be hosting a 2,000 person May wedding, a new Crappie Tournament in October, and the Gypsy Rose will be sailing again as well........

Lake Shelbyville Christmas Tree Recycling Program for Fish Habitat

Don’t let your Christmas tree go to waste this year after the holidays. Extend your tree’s life by donating it for Fish Habitat Improvement Day at Lake Shelbyville. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources will place the discarded trees into Lake Shelbyville to enhance the fisheries for years to come. Donated Christmas trees are bundled together in small groups and submerged in the lake at select locations. These structures provide fish with breeding areas and escape cover, proving invaluable to not only the fisheries but to anglers as well. New trees are added to sites each year to maintain suitable cover.

IDNR Reminding Anglers of the Importance of Safety When Ice Fishing

Being prepared could save your life

SPRINGFIELD, IL – As the temperatures drop in Illinois, those who enjoy year-round fishing may start heading to their favorite location to participate in ice fishing.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is reminding anglers that heading to their favorite frozen fishing holes does come with risks this time of year.

“The IDNR cannot stress enough the importance of safety when ice fishing. Ice fishing can be a great and fun time, but can change into a dangerous situation in just seconds. Being prepared and ready for anything can save your life,” said IDNR Conservation Police Chief Rafael Gutierrez.

Those planning to ice fish should stay off of ice that is less than 4 inches thick. It is recommended anglers carry a rope or floatation device with them to help assist if someone falls through the ice. Wearing a life jacket/personal floatation device (PFD) is always recommended when fishing offshore, including when ice fishing.

For additional information on ways to make your next ice fishing trip a fun and safe one, visit the “I Fish Illinois” website at http://www.ifishillinois.org/programs/ice.php.

Missouri River At St. Charles, Missouri

Horse Drowns In The River After Being Spooked........

Wednesday night, a startled horse pulling a carriage dashed into the Missouri River along the St. Charles riverfront, and drowned in the icy water.

The 13 year old horse, named Cash, was spooked shortly before 10 pm, when his handler with the St. Louis Carriage Company removed the blinder from the horse's eyes prior to loading him into a trailer.

Cash took off running dragging an empty carriage behind him, striking and damaging several vehicles near the Lewis and Clark Boat House, prior to heading down the ramp into the river........

MDC Seeking Used Christmas Trees To Recycle........

After the Christmas holiday has passed, the Missouri Department of Conservation will be accepting used natural Christmas trees to create new fish habitat in Lake 33 on the August A. Busch Conservation Area and in Creve Coeur Lake.

The MDC fisheries biologists sink bundles of used Christmas trees to create cover and habitat for fish.  Kevin Mereau, MDC Fisheries Management Biologist says that many of the lakes they work with are man-made, and do not feature much cover.

Meneau adds that the trees offer woody cover that creates the perfect habitat for invertebrates, which are a good food source for smaller fish, who then bring in larger fish, boosting the lake's food chain........

Winter Solstice

by jalsails

Hi,

After a rather long Sabbatical from my Jalsails Blog it's time to mull over the seemingly endless connections between seemingly unconnected things in the world. 12/21 is the Winter Solstice of 2016. It's been a long year with an equal number of long days and long nights, short days and short nights. Some were better than others!

If you have time during this longest of 2016 nights - take a moment to read -

Warmly as a I return to my wrapping and working -
Jeri

Sunrise @ The Nest over Inter Coastal Water Way, Indian Rocks Beach, FL

Solstice means, sun standing still. Or so it seems when our very own stellar wonder rises over the horizon at Stonehenge, triumphs over darkness and blesses day with light. 12/21 (a mathematical palindrome!) is the shortest day of 2016. It is exactly 7 hours, 49 minutes, and 41 seconds, shorter than the June Solstice. This means we have about 8 extra hours of darkness to snuggle by the fire, wrap gifts, and binge watch Netflix.

Today is the start of the solar year. It’s time to honor an ancient celebration of light and rebirth of the sun. The sun in its annual infancy, it’s weak and can’t produce much warmth or stay up very long. The parallels between honoring sun and a Son every December are obvious, but for the moment let’s focus on a star that’s 93 million miles away.

The longest night affords us time to look deeply into the tiny wonders of our lives. The Druids believe Solstice is a time to feel at home in the world and to be just where you belong. That’s rather Zen as it tells us to be mindful of who we are and what we are doing on this very short day. At the same time, the Druid challenge is to honor Solstice by taking a long look at whether or not our actions are just. The Druids mulled over this existential notion by slaughtering cattle that could not be fed over the long winter but could feed the entire village. Living for others is a cow’s destiny. They also celebrated the Solstice for signaling that the wine and beer brewed during the harvest were finally fermented and ready to drink. Headaches during the short days that followed appear to be one of the many the perils of winter.

SunRise July Solstice, Jamestown, Rhode Island.

Let’s think about just being where we belong. Just what? Naughty or nice? Is being just the same as being good? Defining good is something that has deeply divided us but I’ve got a handful of notions about good.
1.Wheels are good, as are propellers and sails. They help us get from here to there without wearing out our shoes or fins. There are wheels inside wheels and we need to roll with them because not even the sun can stand still for long. If what goes around comes around it’d better be good less the wheel gets a flat and we go nowhere.
2.Evergreens and mistletoe are good. They remind us of everlasting life and at least one of them smells good while the other draws kisses from those we hope smell good. Lighting up a Christmas tree reassures us that the sun will keep it’s promise to spend more time growing daylight.
3.Long winter nights are good for quieting one’s soul from all the glare of days too crammed with “gottas” and Do Lists.
4.Short days are good because they seed a hope that the future will be brighter. They caution us not to hope the days will be so much warmer that we fry the planet. Life is short and we’d best take good care of it and our home.
5.It’s good to feel at home and be just where you belong. Home is where most of us, most of the time, feel loved and can love in return. That’s part of being just. We could all do well to end this year trying to be fair and reasonable, unprejudiced, and even-handed.

In fact, it would be really nice if just for today – and it’s a very short day – we could practice being just nice. Maybe if we try again tomorrow, and the day after (because after all, He knows if you’ve been a wicked pain in the celestial butt of creation or a joy to behold) being nice will become a habit. Today Earth is 3 million miles closer to the sun than we are at the June Solstice. It’s not our proximity to each other that keeps us warm, it’s the love we share wherever we are.

Same Sun Rise - a moment later.

Levee Nearing 100 Year Flood Protection Level........

So far, crews working for the Southwestern Illinois Flood Prevention District Council have completed about 85 percent of the work needed to bring the Metro East Levees up to a 100 year flood protection level.

Outside Cahokia, crews are using heavy equipment to install a 2,000 foot long pipe that will direct water away from nearby properties, and into Dead Creek, which empties into the Mississippi River.

According to Randy Cook, engineer for Amec Foster Wheeler, the lion's share of the improvements being made to the levees are to combat underseepage........

The National Weather Service recently issued a Flood Warning for the Mississippi and Elk Rivers near the city of Elk River, as ice jams are causing the rivers to rise out of their banks.

At least one home has been affected by the flooding.  Reportedly, water seeped into the home and froze, and is affecting the home's foundation.

The City of Elk River is providing sandbags to homeowners that may be concerned about the rising water.  John Cunningham with the Elk River Fire Department stated that they will continue to monitor the situation........

At around 11:50 pm Tuesday evening, the Rock Island County Sherriff's Office and the Moline Fire Department were called out to the Rock River for reports that a man had fallen through the ice.

According to Lieutenant Jens Lape, it seems that the man, who was accompanied by another man, went out to check the thickness of the ice, and "went a little too far out".

The conditions of the ice, and the overall unstable environment of the Rock River have caused the search efforts to be suspended.  Lape added that the efforts have shifted to a recovery mode........

Hi Bill,

By the time everyone reads this:
At 4:44am CDT today the winter solstice occurred. Our Sunshine began its journey back to us to warm our beaches for the 2017 season. A beautiful end to its certain return. I was sitting on shore next to the ice for these pictures. It was a night that it just kept getting better.

One thing stuck out last night:
The silence!
Natural Therapy!

Improvements To The River Can Start Right Away........

According to a River Action report released on Friday, there are several steps that can be taken to start improving the Mississippi River's future, based upon input from the Upper Mississippi River Conference in October.

During this year's conference, the goal was to raise the assessment of the Mississippi River Watershed by the America's Watershed Initiative, who had scored the Mid-Mississippi River with a C.

Environmentalists and scientists teamed up with businesses and governmental representatives to develop seven long term objectives for the Mississippi River, each with goals that should be attainable over the next few years........

Judge:  EPA Doesn't Need To Mandate Fertilizer Limits In The River........

For many years, fertilizer that runs off farmland across the South and Midwest and into the Mississippi River has been blamed as the main contributor to the Gulf of Mexico Dead Zone.

As a result, environmental advocates have been pushing the federal government to directly regulate nutrient pollutants, claiming that the feds simply supporting individual states' efforts to have farmers voluntarily reduce fertilizer runoff isn't working.

Recently, a federal judge in New Orleans ruled that the federal government does not need to impose mandatory restrictions, and that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency could continue to help states run voluntary programs........

Missouri River Management

Corps Hosting Public Meetings........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City and Omaha Districts will be hosting six public meetings in order to discuss the draft Missouri River Recovery Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement.

The Kansas City and Omaha Districts, in conjunction with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service developed the draft MRRMP-EIS, which is a programmatic assessment of the Missouri River Recovery Program.

The MRRP includes crucial federal actions needed to comply with the Endangered Species Act, by avoiding a finding of jeopardy to three federally listed endangered and threatened species, the pallid sturgeon, the interior least tern, and the Northern Great Plains piping plover........

Arch Grounds Work Seems To Be Progressing.... Slowly....

Progress is being made on the $380 million Arch Grounds project to expand the museum and renovate the Arch Grounds, however, work seems as if it were moving at a snail's pace.

On Tuesday, Western Specialty Contractors announced that they had completed their task of restoring and waterproofing the roof of the subterranean museum below the Arch.

Work on the 100,000 square foot roof over the Museum of Westward Expansion required crews to strip off sod and dirt, 10 - 28 inches of synthetic fill, and the old waterproofing membrane.  Then they repaired the roof leaks, installed multiple layers of waterproofing material, and a few leak detection systems........
