We were at Port Charles on Tuesday had to fly over to 521. Looks pretty lonely out there. Did get close to a flock of white pelicans at about 50 seconds of the video.

U.S. Waterways

Stunning Visualizations Of U.S. Rivers........

Over 70 percent of the Earth's surface is covered in water, and oceans make up the vast majority, with the remainder found in smaller seas, lakes and rivers.

In the United States there are millions of miles of streams and rivers collecting water, and funneling it towards the sea, all hidden within 3.8 million square miles of land.

According to American Rivers, the United States has over 25,000 rivers, traveling a total of 3.5 million miles.  Recently, a few maps have been developed to illustrate just how much water flows throughout our country........

Mississippi River Reading

Well Known RiverBend Musician, Pat Liston, Releasing A Book........

Mama's Pride's Pat Liston will be releasing his long-awaited book, 13 Notes to Life:  A Life of Poetry and Melancholy Rhyme, on Saturday during a book release concert at the Pageant, from 7 pm to 11 pm.  First edition books will be available for purchase at the show.

In 13 Notes to Life, Liston discusses his life from the founding and time with Mama's Pride to the present time, and his plans for music in the future.  He takes the reader on a voyage through some of the highs and lows he encountered during his career, but with an amusing approach.

Liston says that 13 Notes to Life has been not only a work of joy, but a process of healing as well.  He resides in Madison County, Illinois, where he has remained a fixture in the music scene, with a huge following.  Liston can often be found performing at venues like The Boathouse along the Mississippi River........

Mississippi River Health

Fibers Polluting The River........

In recent years, environmentalists were concerned about the effects of microbeads ending up in rivers and lakes, however, a greater threat to the health of the Mississippi River may lay with our clothing.

Earlier this fall, Friends of the Mississippi River and the National Park Service released their State of the River report, which found that phosphorous had been reduced, however, road salt and nitrates have increased.

The most surprising finding is the tiny plastic particles that have turned up in water samples, as well as in mussels and fish.  The majority of the particles are fibers from nylon fabrics and polyester fleece........

If Carp Arrive In The Great Lakes, What Next?

Recently, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources conducted an online survey of more than 2,000 Michigan residents, looking to determine how far the state should go to prevent Asian Carp from entering the Great Lakes.

Tammy Newcomb, senior water policy adviser for the DNR, said that they were looking to determine what the public knew about the risk Asian carp poses for the Great Lakes.

Michigan State University professor Meredith Gore says that the Michigan DNR has been a leader in discussing carp management.  Gore is hoping that at least 1,000 people respond to the online survey........

The Mackinaw is also participating in the annual aids-to-navigation mission as part of Operation Fall Retrieve.  The annual project affects more than 1,233 lighted and unlighted buoys and beacons across the Great Lakes.

The 1,233 navigational aids are taken out of service during the winter months as there is less vessel traffic.  The aids are replaced with smaller, more buoyant buoys called ice hulls or wintermarks........

Meramec River Near Eureka, Missouri

A Look Back At The Former River Town Of Times Beach........

More than 30 years ago, toxic waste forced the evacuation of the Meramec River town of Times Beach, but the former Mayor, Marilyn Leistner and some 2,500 former residents are working to keep the town's memories alive via social media sites and reunions.

The site where Times Beach was located has been occupied by Route 66 State Park since 1997.  The park's visitors center features memorabilia from the iconic Route 66 that draws in visitors from around the world.

Times Beach came into existence due to a promotion run in the early 20th century by the St. Louis Times, who offered readers a 20foot by 100 foot plot of land along the Meramec River as an incentive for purchasing a six month subscription.  Many people bought 2 subscriptions, as a single lot wasn't suitable for building.  Many of the roads in Times Beach weren't paved, which led to the town's demise.

In order to keep the dust down, the city hired contractor Russell Bliss to spray the streets with oil, which happened to be laced with dioxin.  Dioxin is the compound found in the defoliant Agent Orange.

In December of 1982, officials had just completed tests finding that dioxin posed significant health risks when the Meramec River crested, forcing the evacuation of Times Beach.  The tests found extremely high levels of dioxin, and the Times Beach residents never returned........

News Release From BoatUS

Leaders Gather for BoatUS National Advisory Council

Annual forum looks at recreational boating issues

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga., December 5, 2016 – A panel of 11 distinguished national boating leaders who serve as a sounding board for Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) gathered last week with the senior BoatUS leadership in St. Simons Island, Georgia, to discuss key issues impacting recreational boating.

The 11 volunteer leaders of the BoatUS National Advisory Council attending the annual meeting included 1. Kris Carroll, president, Grady-White Boats, Inc.; 2. Lenora S. Clark, former California Boating and Waterways commissioner and former Recreational Boaters of California (RBOC) president; 3. Dean Travis Clarke, former executive editor, Bonnier Marine Group; 4. Thom Dammrich, president, National Marine Manufacturers Association; 5. Chuck Hawley, former director, US Sailing; 6. Jim Ellis, National Advisory Council chairman and former president, BoatUS; and 7. Bob Adriance, former editor, Seaworthy.

Joining the Council this year, new members included 8. Robert Baldridge, immediate past chief, United States Power Squadrons; 9. Peter Robertson, president, RBOC; 10. Mark Simoni, immediate past commodore, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary; and 11. Stephanie Weatherington, president, National Association of State Boating Law Administrators.

BoatUS leadership included CEO Kirk La, BoatUS Foundation President Chris Edmonston; BoatUS Foundation Vice President Susan Shingledecker; BoatUS Vice President Heather Lougheed; Government Affairs Senior Program Manager David Kennedy; and Vice President of Public Affairs Scott Croft. Joining the group was Beth Newburger Schwartz, president, Epoch Communications and wife of late BoatUS founder Richard Schwartz.

Topics of the daylong agenda included a discussion on the future and direction of recreational boating as well as a look at the post-election political landscape in Washington, D.C., and what it means for recreational boaters. High on the list of federal legislative issues was the Renewable Fuel Standard (changing the government’s ethanol fuel mandate), Magnuson-Stevens Act Reauthorization (support for national saltwater recreational fisheries policy), the Florida Everglades algal bloom issue (addressing phosphorous and nitrogen runoff), and recreational fishing policy in marine protected areas.

On the boating-safety side, the group also looked at the vulnerability of the GPS system, new emergency signaling devices/flares, and discussed the changes in vessel stability and capacity plates. State docket issues included Hudson River Anchorages and Florida anchoring policy, boater education programs and the changing nature of government policy on anti-fouling paints.

Corps Hosting Meetings On River Ship Channel........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District announced that they will be hosting public meetings, during which they will be providing updates on the draft integrated General Reevaluation Report and Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement, entitled Mississippi River Ship Channel, Gulf to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The study is intended to assess alternative plans for the next phase of construction, which will deepen the Mississippi River Ship Channel from the current depth of 45 feet, to a depth of 50 feet.

The MRSC's current depth results in the need for tankers and bulk carriers to "light load" in order to be able to navigate the channel and reach to ports, increasing transportation costs........

Mississippi River Near Ste Genevieve, Missouri

More Information On Body Recovered From The River........

Investigators with the Ste. Genevieve County Sheriff's Office report that they are laboring to identify the body of a man that was recovered from the Mississippi River with a gunshot wound.

The Sheriff's Office reports that Saturday afternoon, a tugboat captain spotted the body while tending a fleet of barges.  The Captain alerted the U.S. Coast Guard, who in turn called out the Sheriff's Office.

Responders turned out to search for the body, but it was called off after three hours.  Later Saturday evening, the Coast Guard again contacted the Sheriff's office to advise them that the body had been spotted some 15 miles downstream.

The responders resumed their search Sunday morning, and after a few hours, recovered a body.  After an autopsy, the coroner said that the body is that of a Caucasian male, aged 20 to 40 years old, and approximately 5'10" tall.  It is believed that the man has been dead for at least a month........

Hey, Bill,

Friday we took the Y2Katy out for fuel and one last cold ride before winterizing. Pete Tully himself gassed us up at Polestar. Then back to Lake Center to finish. We were cold and hungry when we got done, so off to Massa's for dinner. As you can see we ran into Paul Grubbs of Lake Center fame and his beautiful bride, Stephanie. Good food and good company on our last day of 2016 boating.

See you on the river, buddy!

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in 2012......  were sent to us by Capt'n Mike Costello

Saturday we put together 9 sailboats and sailed from Palisades to Grafton. We had Lunch at the Ruebel Restaurant. They have great food and a restored bar from the 1904 World's Fair, very impressive. Grafton is always fun and all the restaurants and stores always appreciate the business. After that we strolled down and got an ice cream before we headed back to our boats. Yes, eating ice cream in December on the streets of Grafton, sweet. It was 72 degrees. The breezes picked up considerably on the way back and we all rolled into our harbors about dusk. It was a great day.

Thanks Barry for putting it together for us. Sandy Costello snapped the photos of Matt Flerlage’s boat, Tuesdays Child with the colorful genoa. Denny Swandt is crewing for him.

Boating season may be over, and as Christmas time draws near, many people are wondering what to get their boater for Christmas.

Water toys are always a good option, and a floating beverage cooler will be a big hit.  Another option is the WOW, or Walk on Water Pad, which ties to a boat's stern, and provides a nice raft to swim to.

Gift certificates for safe boating courses are another nice option, as are updating safety equipment........

Mississippi And Missouri Rivers

Guides To Both Rivers Launched........

A pair of interactive maps of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers were recently released, and they have proven to be quite popular with recreational boaters paddlers, and anglers.

The Mississippi River Geotourism MapGuide developed out of a partnership between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and National Geographic Maps.  The MapGuide took two and a half years to assemble and execute, and is a considerable asset for anyone planning on visiting the 10 Mississippi River states.

The Missouri River Outdoor Recreation Access Guide showing 164 public access sites for boating, paddling and fishing along the 400 mile path of the Missouri River between Missouri and Nebraska.  This guide is also a source for navigation information along the river, including river mile markers and boat ramps........

05 December, 1963 in River History

Three painters from the Star Sign Co. began painting their version of the Piasa Bird on a bluff that overlooks the Mississippi River above Alton. A few weeks, prior, crews from the Hellrung Construction Company worked to prepare the bluff for paint. They had to remove close to a half ton of rock from the surface of the bluff, and then the 2,500 square foot area received a base coat. The painting replaced a previous duplication of Piasa Bird that had been removed during the construction of the Great River Road........

It was repainted on a steel plate in 1984 and hung from the bluff like a sign.

The current version of the Piasa Bird was painted on bluff in 1999.

Boating Safety

Boating Tips That May Save Your Life........

While many boaters have put their boats away for the season, there are many die-hard boaters and anglers that will still be hitting the water in spite of the chilly temperatures.

Fall and winter boating seasons are quite different than boating in the spring and summer, and as a result, boaters need to practice safe boating habits.

Officials recommend wearing a life jacket, remaining sober while boating, keep the running lights on when operating a boat in darkness, file a float plan with family and friends, and keep a cell phone in a secure, dry space........

Iowa DNR Studying Rarely Seen Salamanders........

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources in conjunction with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and a Minnesota Herpetologist are studying the mudpuppy, which is a rarely seen salamander.

The group is in the second year of studying the mudpuppy, who are a protected species, and are considered to be threatened in Iowa.

IDNR fisheries biologist Kevin Hanson traps the mudpuppies in pool 11, weighs and measures them, and determines their sex.  Hanson then takes a skin sample for genetic analysis, and implants an electronic tag, that will help track the salamander's movements........

Corps Blocks Dakota Access Pipeline At The Missouri River........

On Sunday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that they will not grant an easement for the Dakota Access Pipeline in the southern portion of North Dakota.

Opponents to the four state, $3.8 billion project claim that the project threatens a water source and cultural sites.  The project is mainly complete, with the exception of the now-blocked section that was to have passed under Lake Oahe.

Assistant Secretary for Civil Works Jo-Ellen Darcy announced in a news release that her decision was based upon the need to explore alternate routes for the pipeline's crossing........

Coast Guard Christmas Ship Delivers Trees To City........

On Saturday, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw delivered 1,200 Christmas Trees to Chicago's Navy Pier, continuing a tradition to donate the trees to families in need.

While the Mackinaw has been making the annual trip since 2000, this tradition goes back to the late 1800's, when a northern Michigan family started delivering Christmas trees to Chicago aboard what was known as the "Christmas Ship".  In 1912, the "Christmas Ship" sank, taking all hands with it.

This year, the great granddaughter of the originator of the Christmas Tree Ship was on hand, proudly watching the trees being unloaded........

Rail Project Will Allow More Fresh Water Into Bayou Lafourche........

A project to replace an earthen levee with steel spans across Bayou Lafourche will offer not only a way for railroad cars to cross the waterway, it will also eliminate an obstacle for getting freshwater from the Mississippi River into Bayou Lafourche.

For years, water from the river could only reach the bayou through two culverts in the earthen levee.  The rail tracks ran on top of the levee.

This project is intended to increase the amount of fresh water into the bayou from 400 cubic feet per second to approximately 1,000 cubic feet per second.  A pumping station will be added in the future to help reach this goal........

Corps Winding Up 2016 Navigation Season........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District is preparing for the end of the 2016 navigation season along the Upper Mississippi River.

On Saturday, the St. Paul District will be closing their locks to all navigation, and as such, all vessels will need to be downstream of Lock and Dam No.10 at Guttenburg, Iowa.  This will allow the vessels sufficient time to make it through the Rock Island District locks before their scheduled winter maintenance.

The Corps' Rock Island District will be performing maintenance work on Locks No. 15, 16, and 17 over the winter.  The locks are set to close on December 13, and will reopen on March 3........

EPA Called On To Deny Ethanol Change Request........

Oil and biofuel interests have formed an unlikely alliance to fight a law mandating biofuels in the fuel supply.  In a historic first, the coalition of energy associations is calling on the Environmental Protection Agency to deny requests to shift the "point of obligation" for ethanol to wholesalers and retailers.

A group of refiners known as the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers filed a petition with the EPA to move the "point of obligation" under the Renewable Fuel Standard away from refiners.

The EPA has released a document saying that they should reject the petition, but the Obama administration has chosen to give a 60 day comment period on that decision.  This prompted the formation of a coalition of groups with opposing viewpoints on the RFS to come together and oppose the changes that the petition requests........

Bill,

Right before the big cold snap a few of the sailors had a race up to Grafton. Not quite America's Cup excitement but a good time had by all. If not for the voracious seamanship displayed by our captain, "Bloody Bruce" (alias "Hot Foot") and excellent crewing by "Magnificent Mary", we would not have won the heart pounding photo finish. We had to celebrate by putting up the spinnaker on the Aguila while Dynamite Debbie Dibella took the award winning picture.

Blue Skies,
Dr. Denny

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

After The Season's End, Another "Riverboat" Stops In Hannibal........

Several months ago, the 2016 riverboat season wrapped up in Hannibal, but on Wednesday, a riverboat-like vessel appeared along the Hannibal riverfront.

Megan Rapp with the Hannibal Convention and Visitors Bureau happens to be a river-watcher, and she stopped by the riverfront prior to heading into work Thursday morning.  Rapp noticed were what appeared to be doors and windows were painted on the vessel, prompting another onlooker to state it looked like "the riverboat from hell.

Rapp took a closer look at the vessel, noting the name, the Treble Clef, meant that the vessel was the former Rhythm City Casino boat from the Quad Cities.  Rapp had been advised that the vessel was making a short layover in Hannibal, prior to heading to Memphis to be converted into an entertainment venue........

Norman Rockwell "Tom Sawyer" Painting Returning To Maine........

Since 2010, the original Norman Rockwell painting depicting the fence whitewashing section from "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" has been on display at the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum in Hannibal, Missouri.

The painting, which had been on loan from the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine, will be returning home on December 6.  It original loan period was only for six months, but due to the painting's popularity, the loan period was extended several times.

Back in 1935, the publisher of the Heritage Press and Limited Editions Club had asked Norman Rockwell to illustrate various scenes from Mark Twain's "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and "the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn".  The Limited Editions Club released special illustrated book editions for their subscribers.

Twain's books had been illustrated before, but Rockwell discovered that none of the artists visited Hannibal before.  Rockwell decided that he would visit Hannibal to pick up some authentic details for his illustrations........

USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service

Funding Available To Protect Missouri Wetlands........

The USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service has $9.5 million set aside to assist landowners in Missouri restore wetlands, and an additional $360,000 on hand for easements that would prevent agricultural land from shifting to non-agricultural uses.

The funds are part of a nationwide effort by the USDA to restore and protect key wetlands, farmlands, and grasslands via the NRCS' Agricultural Conservation Easement Program.

Wetlands are regions that remain saturated by water for most of the year.  They are often referred to as "Nature's Kidneys", as wetlands filter contaminants from water naturally.  Wetlands reduce flooding and soil erosion, support a variety of fish, plants, and wildlife, offer recreational opportunities, and recharge groundwater.

J.R. Flores is a State Conservationist, and he said that Missouri landowners need to apply for the program by Tuesday, January 6, 2017 in order to be eligible for the current round of funding.  Last year, landowners participating in the program restored over 1,700 acres of wetlands in Missouri, mainly along the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers........

Man Catches Near Record 112 Pound Catfish........

The day before Thanksgiving, Riahn Brewington was fishing along the northeastern Cape Fear River in North Carolina, when he reeled in a 112 pound catfish, just missing the state record by 5 pounds.

Brewington said that in the water, the fish felt like it was pretty big, but he didn't realize just how big the fish was until he got his arms around it.

He took plenty of photos of himself posing with the fish, prior to releasing it........

River History....

2 December 1967 in River History

The famous River Queen steamboat sank on the St. Louis Riverfront on this day in 1967. High water, ice and other problems made saving the sinking vessel impossible. The steamboat quickly brokeup and the city of St. Louis brought in a scoop shovel to demolished what remained her, leaving behind only the steel hull.

It was indeed a famous riverboat, as it was used in the movie.. "Gone With the Wind."

The River Queen started her life in 1923 as the Eagle Packet Company steamer named the Cape Girardeau and later it became the the Greene Line's tourist steamboat, the Gordon C. Greene. She was the last packet boat built by the Howard Shipyards at Jeffersonville, Indiana and ran the rivers until 1952 when she was converted to a hotel, restaurant, bar/museum and gift shop under the names of Sarah Lee, the Sternwheller and then the River Queen.

Mississippi River At Davenport, Iowa

Loss Of Casino Boat May Mean Loss Of Fishing........

Last week, the former Rhythm City Casino riverboat departed from the Davenport riverfront, not only marking an end to riverboat gambling in the Quad Cities, but possibly marking an end to fishing in the calm waters around the casino facility.

Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say that the boat and barge created an area of calm water in the choppy river, offering a quiet spot for bait fish to rest, which creates a spot for larger fish to feed on the smaller ones.

On November 17, the father and son team of Eric and LeRoy Schwenn headed out to their go-to spot near the riverboat's paddlewheel for one final chance to fish at their hot spot........

Illinois To Eliminate Conservation Police Positions........

The State of Illinois has revealed that they are going to be eliminating the jobs of more than 30 Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police.

The state has sent out notices to 32 officers and recent graduates of their conservation police academy.  The cuts are set to take place on December 31.

There is a possibility that the jobs could be saved, as similar notices were sent out last year and suspended the layoffs at the last moment........

LL&W Founder Has Vision For Davenport's Riverfront.........

Chad Pregracke, founder of Living Lands & Waters says that he respects Davenport's process of requesting proposals for revitalizing the city's riverfront, however, he has come up with a plan of his own in case the city wants to go in another direction.

Davenport has received two proposals for the barge and porte cochere and barge along their riverfront, however, a review committee determined that one of the proposals did not meet their criterion, and the other met with little enthusiasm.

Pregracke has envisioned a floating park, based on Philadelphia's Spruce Street Harbor along the Delaware River waterfront.  He says that while others see ugliness at the former casino site, Pregracke sees the barges, and what could be........

River History....

This Week in 1982 River History

There was big news on the Rivers around St. Louis during the first week of December in 1982.

Over 10 inches of rain fell in the area, and the Mississippi River crested 9 feet above flood stage. The Meramec River had a record crest that wiped out portions of Arnold, Eureka, and Valley Park.  This flood, along with dioxin-tainted soil brought about the demise of Times Beach, Missouri.......

Koester says that the otter flopped into the front of the boat, rolled about, nibbling on shoes, scratching his belly, and ears.  He adds that the otter appeared to be enjoying itself........
