Boat Propulsion Manufacturer

Torqeedo Powering Vessel For Amazon River Documentary........

Torqeedo, a manufacturer of electric marine propulsion systems, is powering a vessel for the British Broadcasting Corporation's natural history documentary on the Amazon River.

The BBC crew filmed pink river dolphins in the Amazon River, and jaguars along the shore as part of their Planet Earth II series, which will be presented by Sir David Attenborough on BBC One this month, and BBC America in late January.

While gearing up to film the documentary, BBC contacted Torqeedo, noting they were concerned with preserving the environment without disturbing the animals........

Dogtooth Bend Region of Southern Illinois

If Left Alone, The River May Isolate Farmland........

If left to it's own devices, the Mississippi River in the Dogtooth Bend region of Illinois may change the peninsula into an island, causing approximately 15,000 acres of farmland to become inaccessible, except by boat.

A University of Illinois study revealed that each successive flood deepens the channel across the narrow peninsula, which may permanently alter the course of the Mississippi River.

According to University of Illinois researcher Ken Olson, the landowners and farmers in the Dogtooth Bend region, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, members of the Len Small Levee and Drainage District, and state and local leaders need to make some difficult decisions about repairing the current landscape and preparing for future flooding events........

Mississippi River At Davenport, Iowa

City Council Looking For Other Riverfront Options........

After reviewing Restoration St. Louis' proposal for the barge and porte cochere on the Davenport riverfront, the City Council decided that they need to look into more land-based riverfront development, as the proposal lacked the impact the city was looking for.

Alderman Kyle Gripp, at large said that he wanted to be "wowed" by the proposal, as the barge wasn't included in the RiverVision, so if the barge was to remain, the proposal had to be good enough to keep it.

The City will be looking into having the existing barge and structures removed from the riverfront.  This decision by the City Council wraps up a process started back in August on determining how to move forward with redeveloping the riverfront........

Boat Gas News

EPA Increases Ethanol Volume For 2017........

Last Wednesday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that they have raised their corn ethanol mandate for 2017 to levels determined by Congress in the 2007 Renewable Fuel Standard.

In the EPA's final volume rule, they will be requiring 15 billion gallons of conventional biofuel be mixed into the nation's fuel supply, an increase over the 14.8 billion gallons the EPA proposed back in May.

Thom Dammrich, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association said that the EPA's decision threatens the safety of millions of American boaters.  Dammrich adds that the EPA ignored considerable evidence presented by the boating industry that higher ethanol levels cause damage to marine engines........

Bayliner's 60th Anniversary Next Year........

As the calendar is creeping toward 2017, Bayliner will be celebrating their 60th anniversary.  Back in 1955, Bayliner's roots were planted in a Seattle parking lot when J. Erin Odson founded Advance Outboard Marine.  In 1957, he sold the first Bayliner boat.

Current Bayliner Brand Manager Mike Yobe said that the company has always focused on quality and affordability.  The best example of this philosophy was the introduction of the Total Value Package in 1982, which bundled a Bayliner 1600 Capri, an 85 HP outboard engine, and a trailer for $6,295.

Bayliner was the first brand in the United States to bundle together a boat/motor/trailer package at a very competitive price..  The Total Value Package caused the brand to catch on.  By 1986, Bayliner was selling 43,000 boats per year.  1986 also happens to be the same year that Brunswick purchased the company........

Phase One Of Mussel Relocation Completed........

Crews recently wrapped up the first phase of relocating freshwater mussels as part of the construction of the new Interstate 74 Bridge spanning the Mississippi River between Illinois and Iowa.

This initial phase began back in August, and wrapped up earlier this month.  Teams of divers collected mussels from the bed of the Mississippi River, identified them, tagged some for future identification, and relocated them to another part of the river.

According to Heidi Woeber, a fish and wildlife specialist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, over 140,000 mussels were relocated, including nearly 900 that are federally protected........

K.C. Sees More Cargo Moving Through Their Port........

In 2015, Port KC reopened the public port, which had shut down in 2007, with the hopes that the Missouri River would be able to overcome it's reputation for being unreliable for navigation.

Kansas City's Woodswether Terminal has seen the final barge of the year, and it appears that 2016 has been a successful year.  Port KC says that some 45,000 tons of cargo passed through the port, close to three times the volume as in 2015.

While private ports may continue to operate during the winter, Port KC doesn't expect to see barges at their public terminal until April of 2017.  Port KC believes that they will see 70,000 tons of cargo during the 2017 shipping season........

Nutrient Levels In River Remain High....  Gulf Dead Zone Still Large....

Fifteen years ago, 12 states in the Mississippi River Basin set an objective of decreasing the size of an oxygen-starved region in the Gulf of Mexico to 1,900 square miles, however, it is still several times larger.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the Gulf Coast Dead Zone is a low oxygen area in the Gulf that is inhospitable to fish and marine life.  The EPA calls it Gulf Hypoxia, in reference to the scientific term for low oxygen area.

In 1997, Missouri, Illinois and 10 other states have been looking for ways to reduce their contribution to the hypoxic zone, as part of the EPA's Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Hypoxia Task Force........

Mississippi River At Davenport, Iowa

The Former Rhythm City Casino Riverboat's Departure Delayed........

Friday evening, better than 50 people braved the cold and headed down to the Davenport riverfront in order to see the former Rhythm City Riverboat Casino depart, however, it never left.

According to William Lozier, owner of Memphis Riverboats, it isn't likely that the vessel would depart until after the U.S. Coast Guard has had an opportunity to complete a walk-through.

Originally, the vessel was set to depart at noon on Friday, and a problem with personnel pushed that departure time back to 8 pm.  After 8 pm rolled around, there was some movement from the vessel, but it would just as quickly return to it's mooring spot........

It was a severe scour issue associated with the Lock and Dam 25 Overflow Dike. The Overflow Dike was under an
imminent threat of failure due to uncontrolled underseepage.
Sand was dredged into the scour hole and the river bank line was re-established with stone revetment. The newly placed dredge material was covered with a layer of bedding stone and topped with larger stone.

IDOT:  Memorial Bridge Plans Up For Review........

On December 8, officials with the Illinois Department of Transportation will be hosting a public meeting to discuss alternatives for the replacement of the Quincy Memorial Bridge.

While there will be exhibits, maps, and aerial photography of the current proposals on hand, there will be no formal presentation made.  This meeting is intended to allow the public to offer feedback to the study team as they analyze other options.

Officials still maintain that construction work on a new bridge is still many years away.  IDOT has no concrete cost figures, but they estimate that the cost will likely top $100 million........

The Picture of the Day....

On a recent road trip to northern Illinois, we followed the Mississippi River on the way home and stopped at various places.  One of them was the South Side Boat Club in Keokuk, Iowa located just down river from the Keokuk lock and dam.

Out on the boat club's deck over looking the river, was Catfish Charlie. Charlie is a metal sculpture replica of a 120 pound, 5' 6", 20 year old catfish that was pulled from the Mississippi River in that area.

Thought I would share a picture of Catfish Charlie with everyone.

The New Madrid Fault Is A Sleeping Giant........

On Wednesday, the Center for Earthquake Research and Information announced that a minor earthquake was reported in the Missouri bootheel region along the Mississippi River.

While this quake only measured 3.3 in magnitude, it was one of the largest to occur along the New Madrid fault in the past six months.

For the better part of the past two centuries, the New Madrid fault has been fairly quiet, however, experts say that there is a possibility that the fault may reawaken as it did in 1811........

MDC Spending Millions To Save Niangua Darter........

The Missouri Department of Conservation is spending millions of dollars to save the Niangua Darter, a small fish listed as State Endangered and Federally Threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

So far, the MDC has spent more than $2 million to build more fish friendly bridges across the central portion of Missouri, with at least another million planned.

The Niangua Darter is native to Missouri, and is not found anywhere else in the world.  Nowadays, there are only eight populations surviving, and only in northern flowing tributaries in the Osage River Basin........

Invasive Mussels Detected In River........

Montana state officials have stopped short of announcing that the destructive, invasive zebra and quagga mussels are present in the Missouri River, evidence collected so far does not look good.

A sample of water taken from the Missouri River south of the Canyon Ferry Dam has been tested by two independent laboratories, who confirmed the presence of mussel larvae.

Ron Aasheim, an administrator with the Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Park's Information and Education Division says that they found one veliger, or larval mussel, in a water sample taken from south of the Cannon Ferry Dam........

Aging Locks Are Choke-Points For Shipping.........

37 year old Luther Helland is the master of Lock and Dam No.52 on the Ohio River near Brookport, Illinois.  He is responsible for billions of dollars of cargo, and by extension,  the operation of many factories, farms, refineries and power plants.

Lock and Dam No.52 was built in 1929, and is the busiest location on America's Inland Waterways.  Over 80 million tons of coal, grain, fuel and other goods pass through this lock each year.

New Cruise Ship Laid Up With Repairs........

The newest cruise ship along the Mississippi River, French America Line's 150 passenger Louisiane has had to cancel her November and December cruises on account of needing mechanical repairs.

A spokesman for French America said that the required repairs necessitate newly fabricated parts, meaning she won't be ready for cruises in December.  The vessel will also receive upgrades that were originally planned for it's winter layup in January.

The Louisiane was constructed with an upscale French theme, and was originally intended to debut in late August, however, flooding in Louisiana pushed that date back to October 18........

Pictures and Reader Commentary

Army Corps of Engineers Meeting

Click pic to enlarge

The Pictures and Commentary of the Day.....  were sent to us by Susan Bullington

Bill,

I went to the Annada Corp of Engineers open house Tuesday evening. It was not a disappointment. The Clarence Cannon Wildlife Refuge is beautiful. On hand were representatives from many of their departments. Shame on all the complainers about the Corp of Engineers who did not bother to come!

They explained during their slideshow about how they manage the "drawdown" at the Mel Price Lock and Dam to keep the "hinge point" which is at Grafton at a certain level. Thru the slides you could see that there is a steep drop at the Lock. When they let water thru it affects the Alton area much more so because of the location. The representative said there had been a lot of complaints this year from the Alton Marina area regarding the depth. The "hinge point" had been kept well so not many complaints from that area. Maybe the Alton Marina should have did a little more homework before they built?

There was a biologist available. I was able to discuss the foamy material on the water that usually appears the first week in July.

Conservation was there and I was able to discuss the quality of the water and how they monitor the Nitrogen runoff. The Nitrogen runoff is the cause of the "dead zone" at the mouth of the Mississippi. They have to monitor it from all aspects of the river to figure out where the greatest amounts are coming from to stop it. the grasses are a barrier between farmland and the river and are a natural detox for fertilizer etc.

They stressed they "manage" the Mississippi not "control" it. You can't control Mother Nature.

I scared deer off everywhere I went. The deer are so fast I couldn't get a picture. There were ducks everywhere. Once again too fast for me. I will go back on a sunny winter day and enjoy their hiking trails. Maybe I will see eagles. This treasure is underutilized!

Bluff Fires on 11-22-16

Bill Simon wrote the following commentary about the fires on the bluffs that were posted in RiverBills Boater's Group:

"The bluffs there are owned and part of the Principia college campus. The fire was between the Observatory (Formerly the President's home), which is the greenish lg building across from the Our Lady of the Rivers Shrine, and the current President's home which is the lg house across from Liberty Harbor's entrance. There are some campus/subdivision housing further northeast but quite a ways from the area that was burning."

City To Review Riverfront Plan........

The City of Davenport recently released to the public a copy of the redevelopment proposal for the city's riverfront.  The Davenport City Council will be reviewing the proposal prior to determining the direction the redevelopment will take.

U.S. Inland Marine of Muscatine and Restoration St. Louis were the only ones to submit proposals for the former Rhythm City Casino barge and porte cochere prior to the city's November 1 deadline.

Mayor Frank Klipsch announced last week that only one of the proposals met criteria set by a review committee, and half of the committee members felt that it met the long term vision for the riverfront.  That proposal was submitted by Restoration St. Louis........

Mississippi River In The Riverbend

Can River Culture Survive Flooding?

Is it possible for people who lose everything in a flood to preserve their culture for themselves, and their children?  Should communities be relocated with the federal government picking up the tab?  Is river culture able to be preserved away from the river?

On Tuesday, November 29, from 6:30 -8 pm, Jill Lane, Dean of Transfer Programs with the Lewis and Clark Community College, will be moderating a discussion about the effect the Mississippi River system has on people that live near it.

Alton Mayor Brant Walker and Grafton Mayor Tom Thompson will both be on hand for the discussion.  Alton and Grafton are river towns that have been flooded time and again over the years, and changed as a result........

Displeasure That Plan D Went Through For Marina........

Last week, an announcement made that the Hannibal City Council approved Plan D for the renovation of the City's riverfront, which includes a new marina located in Nipper Park.

Klaus Stendeback, a former harbormaster penned a letter expressing dismay that the City chose Plan D, adding that he supported the $6.3 million Plan B, with a few changes.

Stendeback claims that he could reduced costs on the project by $1.8 million, while reducing maintenance costs by 98%, all while retaining dock space for all incoming vessels........

River History....

Towboat America being pushed down the Mississippi River on Nov 23, 2004

Towboat America at it's mooring site, where it sat for years,  just down river from Winfield Dam.

23 November 2004 in River History

The rusting hull of the Towboat America was moved from it's mooring site just below Winfield Dam on the Mississippi River to a new mooring site on the Illinois River near Kampsville, IL.

A bit more history about the Towboat America.....

The Towboat America had a sister boat named UNITED STATES. These were two of the first "Super Towboats" used on the lower Mississippi River. They both had four engines and regularly pushed 40 barges up and down the river. She is huge! 184' by 58'. She had Cooper-Bessemer diesels, which provided 9,000 horsepower, and a quadruple screw. St. Louis ship built her in 1960 for Federal Barge Line, which sold her to Logan Towing in 1980. In the 1985 Inland River Record it says, 'taken back June 1984 by Hibernia National Bank, New Orleans; sold at public auction April 1985. After removed from service, the interior was stripped and made into a floating restaurant/showboat for use at St. Paul. This did not fully materialize and the boat was later sold to the Goldstein interests of Davenport, Iowa, to be made into a landing boat for one of their casinos in the area. This again did not prove fruitful. The boat was moved to Wood River, IL, at Economy Boat Store for a year or so, then up to Batchtown, IL

Work on another major portion of the Gateway Arch Grounds renovation project, and on Tuesday, the 7 1/2 acre event and recreation space located on the north end of the National Park was opened to the public.

Bill,

I’m sending one in from the upper pool, the Army Corps of Engineers pumped up some beautiful sandbars this summer.

This picture is off my son, Grant, reading a book on the sand bar, it was actually part of his homework.

We came out in the jon boat for this trip.

This was late August, water quality was great this year. The sand bars are up by Elsberry, MO

Bryan from the upper pool.

Mississippi River Near Memphis, Tennessee

The Mississippi River Reopened, With Restrictions........

On Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard announced that the Mississippi River has been reopened between Mile Marker 771 and Mile Marker 750 to vessel traffic restrictions north of Memphis, Tennessee.

This section of the Mississippi River is now open to one-way traffic to vessels travelling downstream.

The Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River says that 38 of the 42 barges that broke free Saturday have been secured.  The remaining 4 barges are awaiting lightering operations, which is restricting the river........

Trooper's Trial Date Set In Drowning Death........

On Monday, a July 10 trial date was set for Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper Anthony Piercy, who has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the drowning death of Brandon Ellingson on the Lake of the Ozarks in May 2014.

The trial date was announced only a week after the State of Missouri agreed to pay $9 million to Ellingson's family.

Trooper Piercy had pulled over the 20 year old Ellingson on suspicion of Boating While Intoxicated.  Ellingson at some point fell into the lake, while he was handcuffed and wearing an improperly secured life vest........

Missouri River Floodplain Opinions

Maryland Heights Encouraging Development In Floodplain........

Instead of using tax money for schools, city roads, and fire districts, the City of Maryland Heights wants to use it for developing projects in the floodplain of the Missouri River.

Hundreds of houses, a Walmart store, and a soccer stadium are among the projects that Maryland Heights has supported building in the floodplain while offering tax breaks for big developers.

Earlier this month, city officials said that they were working with the levee district to find funding for stormwater infrastructure needed prior to breaking ground on any project.  Greg Poleski says that developers should be paying their own way if they want to develop the floodplain........

Missouri River Floodplain Opinions

Guarantee Responsible Stewardship Of The Floodplain........

After Stan Kroenke backed out of a proposed development in the Missouri River floodplain in Maryland Heights, the city has officially stopped development of the floodplain.

It is possible, however, that Maryland Heights' sudden shift to responsible stewardship of the floodplain could be short lived.  People in the region need to work to guarantee that future stormwater improvements are made to benefit the region, as well as preserve the floodplain, and habitats.

It is fairly obvious that the development choices in the region, and overreliance on levees have caused flooding to be worse.  The region needs more stringent rules for floodplain development to discourage development in those areas........

Missouri Department Of Conservation

Eagle Days Events Are Coming Up........

The Missouri Department of Conservation is encouraging the public to discover nature via MDC's Eagle Days events across the state, or enjoy eagle watching their own.

Thanks to Missouri's large rivers, lakes and abundant wetlands, the state is one of the best states in the continental United States for eagle watching.  Each year, thousands of bald eagle migrate south, and take up residence where they find open water and plenty of food.

There are several MDC Eagle Days events offered across the state from December through February, including at St. Louis, on Saturday and Sunday, January 14 - 15 on the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, and at Clarksville, on Saturday and Sunday, January 28 - 29, at Lock and Dam No.24, and the Apple Shed Theater........

Fishy Tales From Seattle, Washington

Six Foot Sturgeon Saved From Water Pump........

Recently a six foot long, 100 pound white sturgeon was rescued while water was being pumped from the Ballard Locks at Lake Washington.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers staff and others work to rescue fish when the locks are drained, which happens during low tide.  Some fish end up being captured after the lock's gates are closed.

The crew must capture fish under the Endangered Species Act, and guarantee their safety.  They called in a sturgeon expert to verify that the fish was a white sturgeon.  Rescuing the fish took about an hour........
