The Pictures of the Day.... were sent to us by Mark the Shark who hails out of Portage des Sioux, Mo....

Heya Bill,

Can't believe what a great day it is (Saturday). I'm out kayaking with several sailboats. It's so beautiful and we are even getting several fly-bys from WW2 aircraft. The trees are changing color, and water is reflecting the blue sky. Life is good living on the river!
Hard to believe it's the end of October.

Am still waiting for those boatrides.

Miami Boat Accident Update

Pitcher Legally Drunk, Cocaine In System At Time Of Accident........

Jose Fernandez, a dominant baseball pitcher with the Miami Marlins, was legally drunk and had cocaine in his system at the time of a late September boat crash, which took the lives of Fernandez and two others.

Fernandez and two other men died in the early hours of September 25, when their 32 foot boat struck a rock jetty off the coast of Miami Beach.  The U.S. Coast Guard repotrs that it is not certain who was piloting the vessel.

On Saturday, an autopsy and toxicology report was released, showing Fernandez had a blood alcohol content of 0.147, which is nearly twice the legal limit of 0.08.  He also had cocaine in his system........

River History....

Oct 31, 1837 in River History

The steamboat Monmouth was heading up the Mississippi River just north of Baton Rouge, Louisiana on a pitch-dark night and crashed into another boat coming the down river. The Monmouth was overloaded with hundreds of Native Americans that were forcibly being made to move to the Western prairies of the United States. More than 300 of the Native Americans drowned when boat broke apart and they were hurled into the cold, dark water.
The crew may have been intoxicated as they reportedly tapped into whiskey barrels at the back of the boat and had been drinking from them all day..
During those days the steamboats were totally unregulated and very dangerous. There were not even any laws requiring steamboats to have lights when they were traveled at night.
The 300 Native American that drowned were reportedly burried in a mass unmarked grave.

Mississippi River History

A Look Back At Possibly The Final Riverboat Race........

On September 5, 1923, The Capitol left Cape Girardeau, heading for Chester, Illinois.  Later that evening, one of the oldest riverboats, The Bald Eagle left Cape.  Approximately one mile upriver, the vessels passed, with a lot of whistles and shouting.

Around midnight, The Bald Eagle encountered fog, and tied up for the night.  Once the fog lifted on September 6, The Capitol passed by, and someone on The Bald Eagle shouted at the crew to get up, they were having a race.

Even with an unscheduled stop to pick up some animals, The Bald Eagle was able to get ahead of The Capitol, arriving first at the wharf in Chester, Illinois, ending perhaps the last unplanned, unscheduled riverboat race along the Mississippi River........

Mississippi River Cruising

A Cruise Aboard The Queen Of The Mississippi River........

Prior to her trip aboard the Queen of the Mississippi, the only experience travel writer Sherry Kennedy had on an old fashioned paddlewheeler was the Liberty Belle at Liberty Square in Disney World.

Kennedy decided to take a seven day Mississippi River cruise to take in the history of a bygone era.  She describes the ambience and decor of the Queen of the Mississippi, noting that the mid-19th century styling offers passengers an additional way to step back in time.

The itinerary had the Queen of the Mississippi making stops between New Orleans, Louisiana, and Memphis, Tennessee.  The cruise offers passengers the chance to tour plantations, Civil War battlefields, and the towns that grew up along the Mississippi River........

Hi Bill,

Last week Jerry Groeblinghoff and I went to our boat where it was docked at Eastern Shore Marina in Fairhope AL. It is a beautiful town and nice marina until the wind blows from the north. When it does, much of Mobile Bay leaves for the gulf leaving small water to navigate within. Linda and I were disappointed a few times last year.

Jerry and I had a great sail south to the intercoastal then east past Lulu's marina (Jimmy Buffetts sisters place) and on to beautiful Barber where we will keep her for the next year.

Mississippi River At Rock Island, Illinois

A Look At The Swinging Government Bridge........

High above the center of the swing-span Government Bridge linking Davenport, Iowa and Rock Island, Illinois is a 22 by 22 foot control room.  It's oversized windows offer a 360 degree view, making it seem as though the tower is floating on the river.

Located in the center of the tower is the bridge's original 120 year old drive gears, which are the size of ship's wheels.  They are still controlled by hand.

Tower operators control the speed at which the swing span operates, using line of sight to perfectly allow passage of tows, barges, and pleasure boats into and out of the locks, before swinging the span back in line with the bridge........

Boat Manufacturer

Brunswick's Revenue's Grow, But Less Than Expected........

During the third quarter of 2016, Brunswick Corp. reported revenues of $1.09 billion, but they missed their goal by approximately $20 million.  This is attributed to integrating an acquisition in the fitness segment, and slower international sales in the engine segment.

Analysts report that investors overreacted to the news, as Brunswick stock fell by 7% on Thursday.  It closed at $43.15 per share.  The overreaction was attributed to decreases in vehicles such as off road vehicles and motorcycles, which the boating industry has been largely insulated from.

Brunswick's CEO, Mark Schwabero said that their overall growth in revenue was strong, but lower than they expected, partially due to the fitness segments.  The marine businesses also saw weaker demand within some international markets........

COAST GUARD RECOMMENDED SAFETY STEPS FOR DUCK HUNTERS, RECREATIONAL BOATERS

DETROIT — The Coast Guard recently responded to several cases in which boaters and their vessels were not adequately prepared for the elements.
As the fall progresses, air and water temperatures are dropping steadily.
These temperature changes have an immediate and drastic impact on survival time. In order to ensure their safety, recreational boaters should remember to do the following:
-Check the forecasted marine weather prior to getting underway. Compare the expected sea state (wind and wave heights) to the capabilities of your vessel. Dress appropriately for the water temperature, because cold water lowers body heat dramatically faster than cold air. Even if you are not planning on entering the water, the possibility of that happening is very real. An unexpected fall overboard is one of the leading factors in boating deaths.
-Wear a life jacket. While there are many factors that can contribute to boating accidents, a life jacket can save a life even after an accident has occurred. Federal regulations require a life jacket onboard for each person on the boat, but the Coast Guard recommends that you wear your life jacket at all times when boating. If you do find yourself in trouble and in the water, stay with your vessel for as long as possible, even if capsized. Do not try to swim for shore.
-Maintain safety gear onboard your vessel. This should include a VHF radio, a fully charged cell phone with an extra battery (if possible), distress flares, an emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB), and extra fuel.
-Let friends and family know where you are going and how long you plan to be out on the water. In the event of an emergency, this information is crucial to providing a timely, efficient, and effective response. Family members should not hesitate to contact the Coast Guard once boaters have surpassed their planned return time and can’t be reached. Timely notification is crucial and key in how long boaters are exposed to the harsh elements.
If you or a family member is in distress on the water, contact the U.S. Coast Guard on VHF-FM channel 16 or (313)568-9560 immediately.

A Look Back At The Gateway Arch Construction........

The final piece of the Gateway Arch was set into place on October 28, 1965.  While it's design is fairly simple, it's construction was anything but simple.

The 630 foot tall arch is firmly anchored into limestone bedrock, and sits upon foundations constructed with 26,000 tons of concrete.  The first 312 feet of the arch has steel reinforced concrete poured between the carbon steel interior walls, and the stainless steel outer skin.  Welds secure the arch pieces, called cans, the rest of the way to the top.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch has compiled a photo gallery featuring scenes from the construction of the Gateway Arch.......

Flooding In The Riverbend

Presentation Looks At The Archaeology Of Floods........

Natural disasters leave behind evidence of their occurrence in the archaeological record, and on Thursday, November 17, the Jacoby Arts Center will be hosting geoarchaeologist Gregory Vogel, who will be discussing the prehistory and history of human interactions with rivers and water, as well as the Piasa Bird.

The rivers are constantly changing in response to climate shifts and man-made diversions.  Archaeological and geological records offer a look back at history that has affected the Mississippi River, including the New Madrid quakes from 1811 to 1812, which changed the course of the river, and the Great Flood of 1993.

The Archaeology of Disaster:  Floods in the Confluence Region Past and Present is offered in conjunction with the exhibit Running Water:  Riverwork Project and Watershed Cairns, which will be on display through November 19........

Mississippi River Art

Deadline Nears For Art & Photography Shootout........

All photographers and artists have been invited to take part in the Mississippi River Art and Photography Shootout, which is a juried exhibition intended to interpret, document, and celebrate life along the Mississippi River, and the river itself.

The subject matter of the artwork can be of anything, however, it must have a direct relationship to the river.  The artwork submitted must be original, and created within the last three years.

There will be two categories for judging, photograph, and works of art, both two and three dimensional.  There will be a variety of prizes up for grabs, including monetary prizes of up to $100........

Mississippi River At Muscatine, Iowa

Amount Of Sodium Hydroxide Spilled In The River Unknown........

Iowa Department of Natural Resourced officials are saying that an unknown quantity of sodium hydroxide spilled into the Mississippi River near Muscatine.

According to the IDNR, the chemical, also referred to as caustic soda, or lye, sprayed onto the Mississippi River while being transferred from a barge to K.A. Steel Chemicals.

The leak was discovered at around 1 pm after the transfer had been completed.  Workers stopped the leak around 3 pm, after workers reconnected a hose to the barge, which let excess chemical drain back into the barge........

Mississippi River Cruising

Cruising Competition Increasing ........

The Mississippi River has offered an old fashioned form of river cruising for many years, and the old-timey feel of paddlewheel power has been a significant part of it's allure.

The U.S. river cruising industry benefits from a growth in popularity, as a new generation of Mississippi Riverboats is working to modernize the experience of the Mississippi River.

The Mississippi River cruising renaissance is being led by the American Queen Steamboat Company, which recently released specifics on a series of loft suites that will be installed aboard the American Duchess........

Study Assesses Effects Of Major River Lock Closure........

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently looked at the economic effects of a hypothetical closure of locks along the Upper Mississippi River and the Illinois River.

The executive director of Soy Transportation Coalition, Mike Steerhoek stated that these situations highlight the ways a lock failure could negatively affect the profitability of U.S. farmers.

This study was commissioned by the U.S.D.A., and performed by the University of Tennessee.  It focused specifically on the way that corn and soybean stakeholders could be affected........

Miami Mayor Supports Marine Stadium Renovation Plans........

The administration of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado is supporting a $45 million bond issue that would finance the renovation of the historic Miami Marine Stadium, a landmark on Virginia Key that had been closed and deteriorating since 1992.

The Miami International Boat Show has a five year agreement with the city to hold their annual expo at the venue, but the city must develop a clear use or operating plan for the facility.

The City of Miami had spent $18 million repaving parking lots and installing new utilities to accommodate the boat show, which made it's debut at the Marine Stadium in February........

Brunswick Announces Sales Up Ten Percent........

Brunswick Corp. has announced that for the third quarter of 2016, net sales increased by 10%, with strong growth across all segments.

In Brunswick's boat segment, sales were up by 13%.  Their engine segment saw an increase of 6% in parts and accessories, and outboards, which offset decreases in sterndrive sales.

Brunswick Chairman and CEO Mark Schwabero said that the U.S. marine market was outpacing the market growth rates in the States, as well as in Europe.  Canada, however, is still showing weakness........

News Release From BoatUS

The Boat Thieves Want to Steal
5 Tips to Stop Yours From Being Taken This Winter

ALEXANDRIA, VA, October 26, 2016 – Is your boat less than 26 feet? Does it have outboard motor power and rest on a trailer? If you said yes, beware – you’re a big target for theft. A newly released study that looked at five years of BoatUS Marine Insurance claims files shows that 75 percent of all boats stolen matched this description. With the long winter lay-up period nearing, BoatUS has five tips to make your boat harder to steal.

1. Just one lock? Try another, and another. You simply can’t have enough. The whole goal is to make someone else’s boat more attractive than yours, so the more locks a thief sees on the trailer tongue, outboard engine, or used with chain around the trailer wheels the better the chance he’ll move on.

2. Don’t leave the key on a stored boat. Never assume your key’s hiding place is so good that thieves won’t find it. Remember, that’s what these people do for a living.

3. Make the trailer impossible to move. A removable tongue hitch, or, better yet, removing the trailer tires if the boat’s going into long-term storage turns your rig into 1-ton dead weight. The little things can help, too, such as not parking your boat in the driveway with the hitch facing the street. Consider using removable trailer lights – with most thieves working the nightshift, they want to avoid attracting the attention an unlit trailer would cause.

4. Don’t stick out. You may want to think twice about hanging a “for sale” sign on the side of your boat. Use a full winter cover to hide attention-getting, splashy graphics. Store all valuables, removable electronics and paperwork at home during the off-season.

5. Check out new anti-theft technologies. Devices that send alerts to your cell phone, take photos/video, provide tracking, or kill the motor if your boat moves from its virtual boundary can stop a theft in its tracks. Once a boat is gone, the BoatUS study finds that only one in 10 vessels are ever fully recovered.

To see a series of boat theft topics including the BoatUS Marine Insurance Theft Study, more on theft prevention, and a look at the newest boat theft-prevention systems, go to BoatUS.com/Boat-Thefts.

Fishy Tales Near St. Louis, Missouri

Report:  Great White Sharks Spotted In The Mississippi River?

Recently, a report has been circulating the interwebs that a mating pair of great white sharks have been spotted in the Mississippi River near St. Louis, Missouri, and that the Missouri Department of Conservation has been dispatched to round them up.

According to Dan Zarlenga, the St. Louis regional media specialist with the MDC, great white sharks live in marine environments, and are not very tolerant of brackish waters, much less fresh water like the Mississippi River.

This story has been debunked as a false news story, as the reporting website's homepage, react365.com, displays a banner stating "Prank Your Friends With Fake News!"........

Marine Products Corp. Releases 3rd Quarter Results........

Marine Products Corp., the parent company of Chaparral and Robalo boats, posted higher sales for the third quarter of 2016, based upon the increased unit sales of their SunCoast deck boats, Vortex jet boats, and Robalo outboards.

For the quarter, which ended on September 30, Marine Products reported net sales of $55,361,000, a 17.7% increase over last year;s $47,038,000.  The increase was due in part to a 12.5% increase in unit sales, and a 1.7% increase in the average selling price per boat.

Gross profit for the third quarter of 2016 was $11,768,000, a 19.2% increase over last year's $9,874,000.  Operating profit was up as well, increasing 22.6% to $5,461,000, compared to $4,454,000 during the third quarter of 2015........

Missouri Fishing News

Winter Trout Season Opening Soon........

Currently, the Missouri Department of Conservation is stocking 73,000 rainbow trout in 32 lakes in urban areas across Missouri for the winter trout season, which will begin early next month.

Many of the lakes will allow fishermen to keep the trout as soon as they are stocked, but the remainder will be catch-and-release until February 1.

Andrew Branson, MDC Fisheries Programs Specialist said that stocking trout in ponds and lakes across the state gives anglers close-to-home trout fishing in places that trout are not normally found........

Carl, Mary and myself visited Lock and Dam 19 at Keokuk, Iowa last weekend while on a road trip to northern, IL.  Here are a couple of shots of  the locks, The Keokuk power plant and a tow leaving the lock.

This lock has a lift of just over 38 feet.

Some Lock and Dam 19 facts from Wikipedia Encyclopedia:

Construction of the dam began in 1910, and was completed in 1913.

The lock is owned and operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The dam is owned and operated by Ameren Missouri.

The main lock was constructed from 1952 to 1957 and is 1,200 feet (366 m) long and 110 feet (34 m) wide with a lift of just over 38 feet (12 m) and large enough to handle a full-length tow of barges. It was put into operation in 1957 at a cost of 13.5 million dollars. The 1957 lock replaced a 1910-1913 lock.

Construction of the powerhouse began in 1910 and when completed in 1913 it was the largest capacity, single powerhouse electricity generating plant in the world.  In the 1930s, Union Electric Company purchased this 25 Hz power for Streetcars in St. Louis, Missouri. This 25 Hz power configuration is still used for Amtrak's 25 Hz traction power system in the Northeast Corridor.

Alton Water Ski Club Update

RiverBill,

Thought I would give you an update on the Alton Water Ski Club. We hope the COE starts the Piasa Island dredging project next year. This should open up  our existing ski site that is now silted in so bad it is not  usable. It should also open up the area just up river from Piasa Creek where a nice little park like setting owned by Great Rivers Land Trust is. I heard we may be able to use that area as new ski site. It sits higher and is far away from the highway. Either way we need the dredging project to open the side channel of the river that used to be the best place to ski in the area.

We have put our clubhouse and pole barn up for sale with Market Pro Reality and the MLS number is 16024533 if anyone is interested. It sits at the intersection of the Great River Road and Clifton Terrace in Godfrey IL. but we are not selling our private beach and boat ramp with the club house.

The club has been around since 1956 and we hope we can keep it going. If we sell the club house that will help get us through this tough time and hopefully get back on the River within 2 years.

Thanks for your support of the club and your awesome website.

Hannibal Marina Plan Endorsed By Park Board........

Just over four months after the Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department approved a riverfront revitalization plan that would eliminate the marina, they recently endorsed a revised riverfront proposal, Plan D.

The plan approval comes with two stipulations:  the marina must be constructed with space for 48 slips, and the addition of the marina must not increase the overall cost of the project.

Plan D essentially gives marina supporters all they were looking for, however, the plan may not make everyone happy.  Kevin Rushing predicts that there could be complaints over the distance between the marina and available parking........

Riverside Flea Market Ends Season With A Full House........

Every fourth weekend of each month between April and October, The Loading Dock in Grafton holds the Riverside Flea Market.  This past weekend marked the final flea market for the year, and many reported that it was the busiest of the year.

Sunday's attendance was estimated to be in the thousands for the flea market's final day until April 2017.  Flea market organizer Trudi Allen said that the weekend was huge, as was April.  She added that each month, there was a waiting list for flea market vendors.

Allen said that the City of Grafton, and it's residents were very welcoming, and they are grateful that people head to the flea market, and then venture out to the shops around town.

The Loading Dock's ice skating rink is slated to open in the building on November 15th........

Missouri River Near Spanish Lake, Missouri

Columbia Bottom Boat Ramp Repaired, Reopened........

Last month, the boat ramp to the Missouri River at the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area in Spanish Lake reopened to the public after extensive repairs were made.

Columbia Bottoms is located near the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.  Late last year, heavy rains swelled the Missouri River, causing it to breach a levee protecting the conservation area.

The most damage occurred at the boat ramp, which suffered significant scouring.  The boat ramp slab was severely undercut below the staging/turnaround area next to the boat launch area.  The connector road and the main road to the boat ramp were heavily damages as well........

The Delta Queen's Headquarters, Restaurant Opened........

The Delta Queen Steamboat Co. has opened their world headquarters and a restaurant in Kimmswick, Missouri, however, the Delta Queen still cannot carry overnight passengers along the Mississippi River until Congress takes action.

Congress will have to grant the Delta Queen an exemption to the Safety of Life at Sea Act, which is a federal law barring overnight passenger excursions aboard wooden vessels before she can carry passengers.

The 285 foot long Delta Queen had held the exemption for around 40 years prior to it's expiration in 2008.  The current owners of the Delta Queen purchased the vessel in early 2015 with the intention of restoring her, and returning her to overnight cruise service........

Army Corps of Engineers waives day use fees ........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announces the waiver of day use fees for veterans, active and reserve component service members, and their families at the more than 2,800 USACE-operated recreation areas nationwide on Veterans Day, November 11.
The waiver covers fees for boat launch ramps and swimming beaches. The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services, or fees for specialized facilities such as group picnic shelters. Other agencies that manage recreation areas on USACE lands are encouraged, but not required, to offer the waiver in the areas that they manage.
“We began this initiative in 2006 to support and honor the men and women who have served the nation and the armed forces,” said Maj. Gen. Ed Jackson, USACE Deputy Commanding General for Civil and Emergency Operations. “This Veterans Day we invite our veterans, active and reserve service members, and their families to visit one of the thousands of USACE recreation sites throughout the country and enjoy their favorite outdoor activities, free of day use charges.”
USACE is one of the nation’s federal leaders in providing outdoor and water-based recreation hosting millions of visits annually to its more than 400 lake and river projects. It’s estimated that 90 percent of the USACE-operated recreation areas are within 50 miles of metropolitan areas offering diverse outdoor activities for all ages close to home.

Mining Co. Intends To Release Saltwater Into The River........

NioCorp Developments Ltd. wants to mine for rare metals in southeastern Nebraska, and they plan to release naturally occurring saltwater into the Missouri River.

NioCorp would be mining niobium, which is used in processing steel to make it harder, and more heat resistant.  The location of the mine will require the company to continuously drain the saltwater from the surrounding bedrock in order to keep the mine from flooding.

The salt content of the water is approximately half that of sea water.  NioCorp says that once the saltwater mixes with the Missouri River, it will be diluted to freshwater-quality water within 5,000 feet of where it will be released........

Mississippi River At Memphis, Tennessee

Pedestrian Crossing Opened, Linking Memphis And Arkansas........

The Harahan Bridge spanning the Mississippi River at Memphis, Tennessee opened to traffic in 1916.  It was the first of it's type, built to accommodate rail traffic, but car and truck traffic as well.

Pedestrians have not legally set foot on the roadway since 1949, but with the completion of an $18 million project, that has changed.

The owner of the span, Union Pacific nearly stopped the project, as they believed that the pedestrian bridge was a bad idea.  Union Pacific officials worked with designers, and got them to include a 15 foot high fence between the pedestrian path and the working rail lines........

Mississippi River Near Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Stalled River Diversion Plan Back Under Consideration.......

Recently, Louisiana Congressman Garret Graves spoke in an LSU auditorium filled with researchers studying the August flooding and said that the long-stalled Comite River Diversion Canal needs to become a priority as the region looks at ways to protect the Baton Rouge area.

Graves said that the diversion canal is a make or break deal for many home and business owners, as they won't return to their homes because the costs involved in raising the homes is too cost-prohibitive.

The $245 million project was originally designed following the great flood of 1983, however, the cost-benefit ratio has been too low to make the project a priority........

Disagreements On Riverfront Fate Cools With Compromise........

The Hannibal Marina is located at the foot of Center Street, and under a proposed riverfront beautification project, the marina would be removed.

Saving the Hannibal Marina is a passion of Alan Bowen, who founded the group Save Hannibal's Marina.  The group spent quite a bit of time gathering signatures from people wanting to save the marina.

After Bowen presented the petition to the City Council on October 18, Hannibal Mayor James Hark unveiled the final riverfront proposal, which places the marina into Nipper Park........

Big Project Seeks To Make Streets Eco-Friendly........

Thousands of people gathered in downtown Peoria to check out the first all-green streets in the city.  These streets are intended to make the river city more eco-friendly.

According to Stacy Peterson, spokesperson for the city, the project will take waters away from their infrastructure, and be more absorbent.  She adds that people will be able to see things like rain gardens and perviable surfaces.

This project is a portion of the unfunded mandate coming down from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency intended to fix the problem of rain water dumping into the Illinois River........

Fall Means Removing Docks From The River........

As fall is in full swing, boaters along the Upper Mississippi River Basin have been working on removing their docks from the river.  Some opted not to handle the job themselves, and instead, hired a company to do the work for them.

College students from St. Cloud, Minnesota signed on with Westre's Marine & Sports dock and lift services to help remove the docks.  The company figures to remove 55 docks form the river this year.

Average time per dock is about 90 minutes.  The fastest time for removing a dock is 30 minutes, and the longest, which included the removal of a 300 foot dock and three lifts, took 4 hours........

Lund Reveals 2017 Renegade Series........

Fishing boat manufacturer Lund is revealing their 2017 Renegade series, which is a Mod-V fishing boat equipped with Lund's IPS hull.  The Renegade is offered in two versions, the 1775, measuring 17 feet, 9 inches, and the 1875, which measures 18 feet, 9 inches.

The feature-filled 2017 Renegade offers plenty of storage, live well space, and can be equipped with 90 or 115 horsepower outboard engines.

These vessels are designed to handle abrupt movements and weight shifts from multiple fishermen, as Lund's patented IPS hull has reverse chines, so the vessel doesn't pitch wildly form one side to the other when weight is moved around onboard........

Study Assesses Effects Of Possible Lock Closures.........

This week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released a report on the possible economic effects of a hypothetical closure of locks along the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers.  The study was conducted by the University of Tennessee.

The study, Economic Impacts Analysis of Inland Waterways Disruptions on the Transport of Corn & Soybeans looked at the effects on stakeholders in the event locks were closed for a lengthy period of time for major repairs.

The report reveals that if Mississippi River Lock and Dam No.25 is closed for the fall quarter, corn and soybean exports at the Gulf of Mexico's ports would be reduced by as much as 9%, or 5 million tons........

Coalition Calls For E15 Labeling Plan........

The NMMA says that data shows that the American public is not aware of E15, nor it's harmful effects on small engines.  They add that more needs to be done to prevent consumers from damaging recreational vehicle engines by the accidental use of E15.

The American Petroleum Institute intends to lobby Congress to make changes to the federal Renewable Fuel Standard when legislators return for their 2016 Lame Duck session following the November 8th election........
