Above are a the "Follow Me" boats and a few of the decorated boats in yesterday's Blessing of he Fleet Parade.

We had a great turn out for Saturday's Blessing of the Fleet Parade and exceeded the 2015 numbers by a "mile of boats."  The official count will be out in a few days. (Someone didn't get the clicker out and assign a boat counter.... Ha)

Not a lot of the boats were decorated, but the ones that did decorate went over the top. A lot of boats had an Olympics theme, plus there was a Sport Illustrated, Lets Fish and the Duck Hunters.

Good job Captains and Crews !

Keep your anchor right here for more pictures in the next few days.

NEXT YEAR IS

Park Board Challenged Over Marina Plan........

Nearly two months ago, the Hannibal Park Board advised the City Council to choose a riverfront renovation plan that would eliminate the marina.  Thursday evening, their 7 - 0 vote was challenged during their meeting.

Rob Myers, leader of an effort to save the marina says that the 7 - 0 vote was a bit short sighted, and not representative of what the majority of Hannibal residents wanted.

Park Board member, Dr. Edward Cline questioned why Myers was bring his argument before the park board, as the decision of whether the marina stays or goes lays with the City Council........

Crews with the Metropolitan Sewer District are making progress on restoring the ultraviolet light disinfection treatment process at their Fenton Wastewater Treatment Plant.  This treatment is required during the recreation season.

Following the heavy rains on Monday, a temporary chemical process was instituted, and MSD has issued a warning for the public to avoid contact with the Meramec River from Fenton to the Mississippi River.

Before this advisory can be lifted, MSD will be conducting testing to make sure that the chemical process is operating as intended, and the treatment plant is meeting required standards........

Mississippi River Rock Island, Illinois

Shipwrecks Litter Mississippi River Bed........

Rocks protruding from the banks of the Mississippi River between LeClaire and Davenport formed the Rock Island Rapids.  The Rock Island Rapids ended up being covered up after the Locks and Dams system was created.

The region was so treacherous, that most steamboat pilots had an exemption on their license indicating they were not licensed to pilot vessels on the rapids.

Even with specialists piloting the steamboats through the rapids, many of the vessels didn't make it, and ended up sinking.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers commissioned an archaeological survey of submerged objects, and listed the historic wrecks that might still be submerged........

Officials Ease Rules For Rebuilding In Floodplain........

Thursday night, the Arnold City Council unanimously approved an amendment to the city's floodplain building code, which will ease restrictions on homeowners that are attempting to rebuild after the winter flooding.

The existing code requires that residential structures have their lowest floor, including basements, three feet above base flood elevation.

The rules are no problem for new construction, however, when making repairs to existing structures, this proves to be more difficult.  The changes will allow the lowest floor elevated to base flood elevation or higher........

Zebra Mussels Found All Over Truman Lake........

Mike Bayless, fisheries management biologist for the Missouri Department of Conservation reports that the harmful invasive zebra mussels are now present in all of Truman Lake's arms.

For several years, there has been evidence that the zebra mussels were present in Truman Lake.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently determined that the mussels were fairly prevalent in the lake.

The Missouri Department of Conservation is encouraging boaters to help avoid the transfer of non-native species by thoroughly draining, cleaning and drying boats when moving them between waterways........

Mississippi River Opinions

Senator Kirk Is Looking Out For The Mississippi River........

A group of southern Illinois residents headed to Washington D.C. last month to express their dismay with the proposed New Madrid Levee Project.

The $165 million project was proposed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and involves draining a sizable amount of wetlands, and would eliminate one of the most important backwater fisheries habitats in the Mid Mississippi River Valley.

The proposal would also likely increase the risks of severe flooding in Mississippi River communities in Missouri, Illinois, and Kentucky.  These scenarios prompted Senator Kirk to request that the Corps stop the New Madrid Levee Project........

Lawsuit Pushes EPA To Question Boat Manufacturers........

Increased regulations may be coming to the boatbuilding industry, thanks to a lawsuit filed by environmentalists against the Environmental Protection Agency.

The suit alleges that the EPA failed to review emissions standards set in 2001, and as a result, the EPA has contacted nine boatbuilders to execute the second portion of the Clean Air Act's Maximum Achievable Control Technology Standards.

The MACT standards were finalized by the EPA in 2001, and required boat manufacturers to alter their manufacturing processes.  The second portion of the MACT involves "residual risk" in regards to styrene emissions........

Currently, "Dinghy" Dave Pike is boating the 6,000 miles from his home in Michigan to Key West, Florida.  Along the way, he is stopping in a few locations to play the badminton-like sport called pickleball.

On Tuesday, Pike arrived in Cape Girardeau to anchor his boat and camp, and by 8:30 am Wednesday, he was playing pickleball with the local club.

REVISED PARADE ROUTE:

Blessing of the Fleet / Parade of Boats route change.

Due to a new wing dike in the cut from the Mississippi into the Illinois and subsequent silting in we feel it is too risky to bring a long parade thru there. Thus, we will go back to the old route for the Upper Pool Parade starting at Yacht Club of St. Louis at 1 PM, proceeding downstream in the Dardenne Slough and then continuing on downstream in the Mississippi River to get Blessed at the Our Lady of the Rivers Shrine at 2:15 PM.

As always, all boaters are welcome to join the Parade anywhere along the route. Grafton Harbor boaters can meet us at the Confluence Buoy as the Parade passes. We are very sorry to have to make this change and will see if we can do something else next year.

Darryll Weil

President, Blessing of the Fleet.

The "Lower Pool" Parade of Boats heading upstream will be lead by Captain John Bloch in the "Follow Me" boat "Audy B II" will begin at 1 PM in front of Alton Marina by the Alton Bridge heading upstream.

Both of these parades will merge just below the Statue with the Antique and Classic Boat group and will pass the Shrine for the Blessing at 2:15 PM.

Gar To Come Back, Won't Affect Asian Carp Population........

While it has been 50 years since an alligator gar was caught in Illinois waters, the fish should be making a comeback, with the help of the Illinois Fish and Wildlife Service.

Recently, there had been stories circulating that the re-introduction of the alligator gar would help control the Asian carp population.  The chief of fisheries of the IFWS, Dan Stephenson says that those stories are not true.

Stephenson said that when the discussions on re-introducing the gar happened, there was no mention of Asian carp.  He adds that there will be so few gar stocked, they will have no effect on the carp populations........

The shipwreck is that of the Washington, which was an American-built, Canadian owned sloop that sank during a storm in 1803.  The vessel was discovered in deep water off Oswego in Central New York.

The Washington was built on Lake Erie in Pennsylvania in 1798 to transport passengers and goods between Ontario, Western New York, and Pennsylvania........

Boat Sales

Sales Fall During July........

July was a rough month for recreational boating, as boat sales fell across most major marine industry categories, including the reliable aluminum fishing and outboard fiberglass segments.

In the main powerboat segments, sales decreased by 7% to 12,459 boats, and industry-wide, sales decreased by 5.7% to 23,296 compared to July 2015.

Sales were slow in January, with sales increasing in February and March, remaining steady in April, and increases in May and June.  Ryan Kloppe, Statistical Surveys' sales director says that it is difficult to determine why sales have been so choppy this year........

The name of the festival comes from the city's original name, Les Petites Cotes.  The city was originally founded by Louis Blanchette in 1769, and named for the hilly landscape along the Missouri River........

Missouri River In Iowa

Boaters Warned About Zebra Mussels........

Officials say that the zebra mussels are now found in all portions of the Missouri River between Iowa and Nebraska.  According to Dave Tunick of the Nebraska Game and Parks Division, zebra mussels are hard to kill, but they can be controlled.

Tunick said that the biggest problem with the mussels is their effects on infrastructure, as they attach themselves to water intakes, boats, docks, and even native mussels and crustaceans........

Reader Commentary

Pool 26 Boat Picture - 1966

Ahoy Bill,

Hope all is well, plenty of water under my keel. Enjoyed the story of the Pool 26 boat, reminded me of my parents boat. They had a 15' Crownline we launched at Dardenne Slough, 5 of us with food and camping gear for the weekend. It was either Bolter or Turkey Island loaded to the gunwales, not much freeboard. The early 60's are found memories and molded my last vw of the water.

See you around the bend.

Arlie

Boating on Pool 26

1966

Click pic to enlarge

RiverBill –

This Pool 26 Boat photo was taken from the dock at Hideaway Harbor in August of 1966 and that was my dad - Stewart Koenemann at the helm of our 14’ runabout getting ready to take some family friends for a ride on the River.

We were regulars at Hideaway Harbor on Sunday afternoons back then and this photo brought back fond memories of water skiing, swimming in the River and picnics under the big shade trees. The view across that part of the River hasn’t changed much over the past 50 years but the looks of our boats sure have.

You may be able to see the “tail-lights” on the back of the boat in the photo. They connected to the hitch with wiring at the bow to control the lights on the transom as stop and turn signals for trailering.

I was very fortunate to have a father that introduced me to the fun of boating on the River. If your dad is still around and has done the same for you, be sure to thank him!

Happy and Safe Boating!

Kent Koenemann of “Sara Smile”

Meramec, Kaskaskia and Big River River Flooding

Flood Forecasts Have Been Revised........

Thanks to where and how the heavy rainfall came down, the flooding predictions for the Meramec River Basin have been significantly reduced.  The flood warnings have been cancelled as well.

The Big River, however, is the exception, as moderate flooding is expected in Byrnesville an 5.8 feet above flood stage.........

Boat Sales

Analyst:  Flat Boat Sales For July........

Well Fargo marine industry analyst, Tim Conder said that powerboat sales during July were likely flat in a year over year comparison with 2015.

Conder reports that the slowing of recent trends is on account of there being fewer non-holiday weekends during July 2016, which had 20, compared to 22 during July 2015.  He adds that holidays are when dealer payoffs and state registration usually takes place.

The good news is that year to date trends are continuing, as broad based gains are being realized across all categories, with aluminum fishing boats, pontoons, yachts, ski and wake boats, and runabouts leading the way........

River Mussels Moving For Bridge Project........

This month, divers have been removing mussels from their beds at the bottom of the Mississippi River, to make way for the new Interstate 74 bridge, that will cross the river between Moline and Bettendorf.

There are several varieties of the mussels that are listed on federal and state endangered to threatened species lists, so they must be relocated to mussel friendly locations.

Since visibility is poor on the bottom of the Mississippi River, divers brought up the endangered, and more common species at the same time.  They ended up being sorted, and invasive species, such as the zebra mussels were removed........

According to Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, better than 10,000 people were housed in shelters in the Baton Rouge region.  Edwards added that the flooding is historic and unprecedented.

Edwards went on to say that the flooding event is not over, and the water will be rising in several areas.  The Edwards family even had to evacuate the governor's mansion due to flooding........

Levee Stakeholder Summit Coming Up.........

Michael D Klingner, chairman of the Upper Mississippi, Illinois and Missouri Rivers Association says that the tri-state region is still at risk for flooding like was experienced in 1993 and 2008.

During the 1950s and 60s, the U.S. Army Corps of engineers made upgrades to the 1880 - 1920 era clay levees, making them taller to compensate for the lock and dam navigation pools.  Since that time, there have been no major upgrades done on the levee systems.

Stakeholders are interested in making improvements to the levees, and on August 22, the Upper Mississippi, Illinois, and Missouri Rivers Association will be holding a Levee Stakeholder Summit at Hannibal-LaGrange University with General Michael Wehr, commander of the Mississippi Valley Division........

Corps And Conservationists Reviving Wetlands........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has adopted a practice known as "environmental pool management", which helps habitat flourish along the banks of the Upper Mississippi River, which are essentially a series of artificial pools.

Gretchen Benjamin, the associate director of water resources for the Nature Conservancy says that if they don't do environmental pool management, the riverbanks will essentially be barren.

The project involves keeping water levels low enough in the pools between the locks to facilitate growth of water plants, while allowing barges to move their goods........

The construction of the Bagnell Dam completely transformed a few rural enclaves located in the foothills of the Ozarks into the tonw of Lake Ozark we can recognize today.

The town grew out of necessity to serve the growing population of workers and officials overseeing the dam project.  It was known by a variety of names until the U.S. Postal Service designated it Lake Ozark.

Over the weekend, the City of Lake Ozark celebrated it's 50th anniversary with a variety of activities along the Strip, including entertainment, food, shopping and music........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Celebrated 50th Anniversary........

Fishy Tales From Lake Tahoe

Responders Rescue Tourists Whose Boat Sank........

Firefighters report that a group of tourists had their speedboat sink in Lake Tahoe at night, and were able to survive by clinging to an ice cooler and a seat cushion.

According to Eric Guevin with the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, four men rented a boat that began to take on water late Saturday night.

The men were approximately three miles from shore when the vessel sank, with only partial moonlight for illumination.  Reportedly, it was quiet enough for people on shore to be able to hear the men's cries for help........
