ABYC Revises Boat Capacity Standards........

Recently, the American Boat and Yacht Council made updates to their Standards and Technical Information Reports for Small Craft, in order to reflect advancements in technology and industry best practices.

The ABYC says that the revisions to the boat capacity standards was in response to high profile incidents, where overloading of vessel's upper decks led to fatalities.

The standards have been amended to include an upper deck weight capacity, regardless of the vessel's length.  Other changes include new battery testing and restraint requirements........

EPA Looking For Comments On Antifouling Paint Testing........

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently released what the National Marine manufacturers Association calls a critical testing method that will benefit boaters and marinas faced with strict rules of copper-based antifouling paint.

The EPA is looking for public comments on the new method, the saltwater biotic ligand model, which is of particular interest to Californians, as the state has set strict rules for dissolved copper in some of the basins.

The NMMA says that the model, if approved, would offer a cost-effective, scientific tool for determining copper toxicity in specific locations........

Lake of the Ozarks -- Shootout Boat Race Information

Captain Michael A. Turner, commanding officer, Troop F, Jefferson City, would like to remind boaters of the upcoming Lake of the Ozarks Shootout boat race event being held near the Hurricane Deck Bridge on Lake of the Ozarks. The event will take place from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Saturday, August 27, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Sunday, August 28.

On Saturday, August 27, boating traffic will be restricted to no wake, idle speed from the 31.5-mile marker to the 36-mile marker of the main channel due to the event. The no wake, idle speed restriction will begin 30 minutes prior to the event start time.

On Saturday only, the no wake zone will be extended to the 30-mile marker from 3-6 p.m. The extended no wake area and time for Saturday were implemented to help facilitate a safer environment on the lake as people leave the event.

On Sunday, August 28, boating traffic will be restricted to no wake, idle speed from the 31.5-mile marker to the 36-mile marker of the main channel. The no wake, idle speed restriction will begin 30 minutes prior to the event start time and will continue to be enforced up to 30 minutes after the last race on Sunday. The race course itself will stretch from approximately the 33-mile marker to the 34.7-mile marker on the southwest side of the main channel. There will be a 400-foot buffer zone between the race course and the designated spectator area.

Boaters wishing to enter or exit coves blocked by the race course during the event will be allowed to do so upon the signal of Missouri State Highway Patrol marine operations troopers, or other authorized event personnel, at the earliest and safest opportunity. Every attempt will be made to minimize inconvenience to boaters navigating in the area.

Anchoring will be allowed in the designated spectator area on the northeast side of the main channel. There will be event volunteers on the water to assist spectators in locating the designated spectator area and to assist with safely anchoring vessels. Boaters are encouraged to use caution while traveling to and from the event, since a large turnout from the boating public is expected.

Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others: Share the waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Wear It!!

Responders Staff Advanced Life Support Watercraft........

Every weekend, a medical transport crew parks their truck and hops aboard Illinois' first, and possibly only, Advanced Life Support transport watercraft.

The primary mission of the Advanced Life Support watercraft is to provide medical care along the river and shoreline in the event of boating or skiing accidents.  The vessel also offers support to other agencies, and is on duty for events on the water........

Recycled Mississippi Crew Arrived At New Orleans Sunday........

On Sunday, the six man crew of Recycled Mississippi docked in New Orleans, after spending the last 50 days traveling down the Mississippi River aboard a vessel made of trash.

Project leader Dan Cullum said that their vessel is constructed from 90% recycled and repurposed materials.  The wood was sourced from an old dock, and the bottles were picked up from the curb.

The international group left Minneapolis on June 19, and have been filming their journey to be released in a documentary later this year........

Annual Redneck Fishing Tournament Held Over The Weekend........

This weekend, the City of Bath, Illinois hosted the 11th annual Redneck Fishing Tournament along the Illinois River.  The tournament's goal is to remove as many Asian car from the river as possible.

The tournament uses the carp's tendency to leap from the water against them.  Participants use boats to stir up the carp, who are then plucked from the air with nets.

While thousands of Asian carp are removed from the Illinois River during the Redneck Fishing Tournament, reportedly, this doesn't even put a dent in the population........

Boat Maintenance

Midseason Boat Maintenance

Boating Magazine recently posted a few tips on midseason boat maintenance.  These tips are obviously not a substitute for any of the factory recommended services, however, they are a sample of the routine maintenance that are a good idea for any vessel........

Illinois Waterways

Illinois Seeks To Resurrect Ancient, Ugly Fish........

A freshwater fish so despised by sportfishermen, that they used to deliberately kill instead of releasing them is getting a second chance at life within the waterways of Illinois.

The alligator gar was forced out of the Upper Mississippi River basin, as it's habitat was destroyed, however, it has survived in dwindling numbers in the waters of the Gulf states.

While Illinois had gotten it's first shipment of alligator gar fry in 2010, the project was mothballed in 2014 due to administrative problems.  Biologists revived the program this summer, and hatcheries are raising new batches of young fish........

LITTLE JOHN'S MOTORSPORTS RUNS A PERFECT PASS IN KENTUCKY

Little John's Motorsports Update

Drag Boat Racing at Pisgah Bay, Kentucky Lake

Bill,

Kind of a crazy day here. We are playing with the new tune up and new setup, trying to go faster.  Well, it didn't work like we were hoping.  We are frustrated, only ran an 8.6, but over 140 MPH. The boat is fast enough and way to fast for some things, but our timing was way off.

To make things work for the race, we put the boat back like it was. There were nine boats in our class (9 second) and the number one qualifier had already run an .01.  There was also an .03 and a .04.

We put our boat on the track and ran 9.000.  A PERFECT PASS !  That makes us the #1 Qualifier for Sunday !

We learned a lot today and know a few things that we have to do now.

Full Shipping Season For The Missouri River........

Even though runoff into the Missouri River system was at 2.3 million acre feet during July, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers say that they have adequate water for a full shipping season along the Missouri River.

The Corps is also anticipating being prepared for 2017 runoff and precipitation, with the full flood storage capacity available.  Jody Farhat, chief of the Corps' Missouri River Basin Water Management Division says that the water currently stored in the upstream reservoirs will be released during the remainder of the year.

Farhat adds that this water will be able to serve navigation, water supply, and other downstream purposes, and be gone in time for the beginning of next year's runoff season........

This is a follow up on the Bald Eagle that Dave and Carrie Clay Ash found in the Two Branch area and then arranged a rescue of it about a week ago.

Darryll Weil

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update on the Eagle:
It has a very bad infection in its elbow (wing) and is still in grave danger. It is on two different antibodies, had fluid removed yesterday from its wing, and has a lot of swelling. It will get a Radio Graft today (they made that sound like it is an x-ray) to see what if anything is broken or just punctured.
This best news is the Eagle is eating. Roger at the Wild Bird Sanctuary said it was getting its sass back. Sounds like this place is incredible. http://www.worldbirdsanctuary.org I cannot thank Jon Kercher and his friend Randy Olson for their help rescuing the bird. Jon is also the one that rushed it to the Wild Bird Sanctuary. Thank you again Jon Kercher.
Corps Commissions Crane Barge For New Lock And Dam........
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently awarded a contract to Conrad Shipyard for the construction of a crane barge that will be used on the Olmstead Locks and Dam Project.
The crane barge will be used to perform maintenance, as well as operate the dam's steel wickets.  The raised, the wickets block water, shunting it to the adjacent locks.
According to Johnny Conrad, President and CEO of Conrad Shipyard, the company has had a long history constructing vessels for the Corps, and the awarding of this contract is a testament to the quality and craftsmanship that Conrad delivers........
Great River Ski Team Hitting The Water........
For the past three years, high water along the Mississippi River has kept the members of the Great River Ski Team off the water, but this summer, the river cooperated, and they have been able to practice again.
The members of the Great River Ski Team are going to show off what they have been practicing during the past two months during their only show of the summer, which will be held on Tuesday, at 6:30 pm.
Ski club organizer, Brenda Vandament, says that while there will be some barefoot and trick skiers, the show will be different from the shows that people remember.  She adds that it will be more like a dance recital....  except with people skiing on the water....
Mississippi River History
A Look At How The River Evolved........
Last month, Beth Johnson, a teacher in the Department of Geography and Geology at the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley, discussed the evolution of the Mississippi River during a meeting of the Port Byron Historical Society.
Johnson discussed how glaciers altered the course of the Mississippi River.  She says that at least two million years ago, the Mississippi River flowed east of Peoria, Illinois.
Geologists call the former course of the river the Ancestral Mississippi River, and about 200,000 years ago, major changes began shifting the flow westward, toward it's current location.........
Hey Bill,
Woke up to my cove full of dead fish. (Wed, 08-03-16) Even though it's been one of the wettest Julys on record, somehow the Army Corp. has chose to keep the Alton pool extremely low this summer. I'm sure it's not just to mess with the marinas' business. Just because the Corp. is a giant waste of money and the marinas bring in a lot of tax dollars. Not to mention how much nicer downtown St. Louis would look if it had marinas instead of the nasty barge parking lot that's there now.
River Bill:
We had a great Saturday on the Mississippi! We participated in the My River Home Poker Run and had a great time! We started at MRH for the Bloody Mary breakfast, headed to Alton Marina for the wild card, made a "shot stop" at the island, visited Kinder's for a peach daiquiri, ate lunch at Cedar Hill, went to Boathouse for live music, and ended back up at MRH for the BBQ dinner. We covered a lot of water for the crummy cards we were dealt, but can't complain because the company was great! Now, we're looking forward to The Blessing, the scavenger hunt, and Hogback!
Kinder's Restaurant
For Sale
Hi everyone! Just a little information to share. Kinder's first opened somewhere around 1939. Grandma (Annie Kinder) worked here until she passed away. Mom (Ida) and dad(Hank) then bought it and opened in March 1971. Jeni and I (Carol) have each worked here for over 40 years. We have met so many wonderful people over the years and always reminisce about the numerous amount of friends we have made. This has been the best job we could have asked for. We had winters off and had the opportunity to participate in all our kids school functions. Summers were usually pretty hectic and can not believe how fast they went by. I retired in 2014 and Jeni will be retiring in a year or so. We both would like to spend more time with our families and grandkids. We each babysit (and are so happy we have the chance to do this). So it is with mixed feelings that we have decided to put Kinder's Restaurant up "FOR SALE". If you wouldn't mind spreading the word we would very much appreciate your help. As of now the business hours are still the same. May God bless you all, as He has so truly blessed us.
Illinois Intends To Restock Alligator Gar........
Illinois' plans for restocking the once abundant alligator gar has less to do with fighting the invasive Asian carp, and more to do with improving habitat and improving sportfishing opportunities in the state's waterways.
Dan Stephenson, the chief of fisheries at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources says that the program will not cost the state's taxpayers any extra money.
Stephenson said that the most significant thing they are trying to do is bring back a species that is not extinct, but no longer found in Illinois' waterways........
Pictures of The Day..... were sent to us by Capt'n Tim Crawford
July 12th Lori was searching thru the water at the small island by Portage Island which we call "Stop N Spot" when she yelled out, "I think I found a ring". It was so encrusted in a black hard substance that it was hardly recognizable as a ring. After much cleaning we saw it was a class ring from Hotchkiss school in Connecticut, and was engraved DRT 77. Lori contacted the school and they found a match. They put her in contact with David Townsend of Michigan. He was shocked to say the least. He told Lori he was at that small island water skiing, took his new class ring off and set it on his towel on the island for safe keeping. Upon returning to the island he grabbed the towel to dry off, forgot about the ring and it flew into the river. That was 37 years ago!
David told Lori that he and his friends were very upset about the loss. His mother had given him the ring for graduation. She passed away 3 days before Lori found the ring. The ring is now reunited with its owner and David is going to send a donation to Border Collie Rescue, Lori's favorite charity.
While the aging LaGrange Lock and Dam along the Illinois River near Versailles still is operating, the deteriorating facility is in dire need of maintenance to avoid a major failure.
The Mississippi River's Power
When you are on the Mississippi River, it's current makes the decisions.  You can see it's effects, and you know it is there.  But, without your input, your kayak will go where the river tells it to go.
Henry David Thoreau understood the importance of the Mississippi River, as it influences it's surroundings.  Blogger Steve Meurett believes that the Mississippi River takes him back in time, and when he is riding the current, he is one with all who have navigated the river........
Responders Search River For Missing Teen........
Tuesday evening, emergency responders were searching the Mississippi River for a teen that was swept away.  The search was called off at about midnight Wednesday morning, but was set to resume at 8 am.
Reportedly, 14 year old David Dunn was hiking with family in Shelby Forest, when he was swept away by the river near the boat dock.  He had been playing along the bank, slipped on the mud, and fell into the river.
The chief deputy on scene said that the river is up right now, and that the undertow is quite strong.  He adds that they have some swift boat operators on the river, and they say conditions are very dangerous now........
Reservoir Drawing Down For Dam Maintenance........
Crews are working on drawing down the Missouri River reservoir above Black Eagle Dam near Great Falls, Montana, so that they can perform some maintenance on the dam.
The 13 foot high, 849 foot long dam was originally built in 1890, and features three powerhouse turbines capable of producing 18 megawatts of electricity.
According to Jeremy Butcher, Great Falls hydro operations and maintenance supervisor for NorthWestern Energy, the level of the reservoir is being dropped to allow crews to replace deteriorated flash boards on the face of the dam........
Crews Relocating Mussels From Bridge Site........
On Tuesday, crews from Ecological Specialists Inc. were working on relocating a large mussel bed made up of around 450,000 mussels, in order to make way for the new Interstate 74 Bridge in Moline.
As the mussels arrived on shore, over a dozen people went to work sorting the mussels by species, and marking them.  Shortly thereafter, the mussels would be back in the river, in their new location.
This process will be repeated numerous times over the next several months.  Federal and state officials say that by October, some half a million mussels will have been relocated........
A Look Back At The Flood Of 1993........
During the Great Flood of 1993, the Mississippi River crested at a historic 49.58 feet.  The floodwaters ripped through a levee and destroyed a farm home near Columbia, Illinois.
The footage of the historic flooding was watched across the globe, and became a lasting image of the destruction wrought by the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers during that summer.
At the end of July, 1993, the swelling Missouri River broke through the levee protecting Chesterfield, leaving it's sprawling commercial district mired in a muddy soup........
Family Movie Screening At The Amphitheater........
On Friday, August 5, at 8:30 pm, the Liberty Bank Alton Amphitheater will be screening a free movie on a 30 foot inflatable screen.  The feature will be Zootopia.
Alton Mayor Brant Walker says that the Amphitheater, which is just a short stroll from the Alton Marina, is an excellent place to show an outdoor movie, as the venue seats 4,000 and offers amazing views of the riverfront.
There will be concessions available at the Amphitheater, and blankets and lawn chairs are recommended.  Parking will be found at Riverfront Park, in the East Broadway area near the pedestrian bridge, as well as downtown........
Hundreds Turn Out To Tour Corps' Tow........
On Tuesday, the residents of Davenport headed to the riverfront to take tours of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' flagship, the M/V Mississippi, and mingled with her crew.
There was quite a lot of history on display, and the Corps is celebrating their 150th anniversary.  The crew members were eager to show off every part of what the Corps affectionately calls the largest towboat ever built.
The five story, 241 foot long M/V Mississippi was built in 1993, and according to Captain Lee Hendrix, she serves several missions, one of which is carrying the Mississippi River Commissioners on the annual inspection trips........
