Look for the new Blessing of the Fleet yard signs around the Portage des Sioux area after August 7th. That's when Maureen and I will be going to the church picnic. Only had a half dozen made so far. That should cover the immediate area around Portage. May get some more made up next year to post around the marinas.

Pictures of The Day..... were sent to us by Mary Tiemann who hails out of Camp Carl on Wilson Road Slough

Bill,

Met some kayakers Thursday night. They are venturing down the Mississippi river.

Three of them went to college together Eric, Johnny, Jason from Colorado & Chicago. James is from Minnesota who met them along the way and joined their crew.

The guys are all in the mid 20's. They had a great time talking and eating with us on Thirsty Thursday. Yes, they got some Patrico bread too! They camped the night on Enterprise beach.

We told them good places to stop along the way. Hoppies Marina for sure.

As I left the beach I told them safe travels and hope to hear from them when they complete the journey.

..
Hey gang the boys and I have had to separate due to irreconcilable paddling styles (they are much faster and take less breaks than me) so I'm now a solo paddler on the river. Made it as far as Alton today. Little bit worried about getting through St Louis tomorrow as everyone I meet keeps telling me about the kayaker who got run over by a barge. (Rip river man). Can anyone offer any advice on getting through the town. Is the canal or over the chain of rocks route best? Is the water height even right for chain of rocks? What do you all reckon? Anywhere good to camp in the Kimmswick area? Thanks!!

Mississippi and Illinois Rivers at Calhoun County, Illinois

Dead Rattlesnake Found By Road Crew........

Boaters in our area spend a lot of time in the Calhoun County region of Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. The county bounds both rivers from the confluence at Grafton to Clarksville on the Mississippi River and to Cliffdale on the Illinois River.

You may be surprised that Calhoun County road crews found a dead rattlesnake alongside one of their roads.

A work crew from the Pike County State of Illinois Maintenance depot discovered the 40 inch long, nine year old male timber rattlesnake last week.

The workers turned the snake in to the Illinois Department of Conservation, as the law requires.  The discovery was made along Highway 96, near the Pike/Calhoun County Line........

Missouri Dry Dock & Repair Keeps Boats Moving........

Towboats use the inland waterways to move goods throughout the heartland.  They push multiple barges, propelled by massive propellers.

The crew at Missouri Dry Dock and Repair Co. keeps these vessels moving by making repairs to damaged propellers.  The props are damaged by many different things in the river, but driftwood seems to be the most common cause.

According to Robert Erlbacher III, the vice president of Missouri Dry Dock and Repair Co., some of the props on the river have been in use since the '60s and '70s, and taking care of them is the secret of longevity........

Asian Carp Update

States Stocking Alligator Gar To Combat Asian Carp........

In several states, biologists are re-introducing the alligator gar with the hopes that they will become a powerful ally in the fight against the invasive Asian carp.

The alligator gar had been found within the Mississippi River basin, but their populations dwindled about a half-century ago in all but the southernmost portion or it's range.

Reportedly, the alligator gar have a taste for the carp, and they also dwarf the invasive fish, which can grow to 4 feet, and weigh 100 pounds.  The gar can grow over 9 feet long, and weigh in at 300 pounds........

Table Rock Lake

Young Eagle Rescued From Houseboat........

Last Saturday, the operators of a houseboat on Table Rock Lake found a young bald eagle standing on a table located on the bow of their boat.  The eagle was either unable or unwilling to fly away.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper Andy Ward was flagged down aboard his patrol boat to assist with the situation.  Ward boarded the houseboat and was able to secure the eagle in a towel.

Ward transferred the raptor to agents with the Department of Conservation, who took the eagle to Dickerson Park Zoo's Raptor Rehab Center.  The eagle has taken to rehab, but his injuries will prohibit him from being released into the wild........

Judge Tosses Conspiracy Allegations In Death Of Handcuffed Man........

On Wednesday, a federal judge dismissed conspiracy allegations against Missouri State Highway Patrol commanders named in a civil suit over the 2014 drowning death of Brandon Ellingson on May 31, 2014.

Trooper Anthony Piercy had arrested Ellingson suspicion of boating while intoxicated.  As Ellingson was being transported to shore for testing he fell from the boat.  His life vest was not properly secured to his handcuffed body, and he drowned.

U.S. District Judge Nanette K. Laughrey ruled that the Ellingson family lawyers failed to prove that 11 commanders and patrol officials conspired to cover up the cause of Ellingson's death........

President Bush signed "The Clean Boating Act of 2008," while aboard Air Force One. The law permanently re-established a long-standing exemption for recreational boats from the "permitting requirements" of the Clean Water Act. It exempted effluent discharges incidental to the normal operation of vessels, including recreational boats. This includes deck runoff, bilge water, gray water and engine cooling water.

River Boating

Rivers Pose Challenges To Boaters........

Missouri State Highway Patrol Sergeant Jacob Angle says that rivers pose unique challenges to boaters, and among them are wing dikes.

These man-made barriers are alternately submerged or sticking out of the water, dependant upon the levels of the river.  Angle says that they could be just below the surface of the water, and could cause damage to the boat.

Angle adds that boaters should be on the lookout for debris, including logs and other items that may be floating in the water.  He says that boating at night presents it's own challenges, and recommends making sure to have the proper lighting, and travel slowly........

Group Keeping River History, Classic Radio Alive........

Hannibal-based Muddy River Radio is working bringing wholesome entertainment to America's Hometown by combining local history with music, and traditional radio stories.

Local radio personality Jim Dewey said that he, Jim Waddell, and Jack Moore were inspired to perform old-fashioned radio shows before a live audience.

The group has performed comedies, a Western, and an early soap opera script.  They have also been inspired by the Mississippi River corridor, and they dedicate a portion of their hour long show to sharing stories from towns along the river........

Army Reserve Soldiers Train In Lincoln Shields Recreation Area........

One would think that building a bridge that spans a body of water in only 20 minutes would be an impossibility, however, the U.S. Army Reserve's 739th Multi-Role Bridge Company will be training this week to do just that.

Approximately 60 soldiers with the company are at the Lincoln Shields Recreation Area to train on building bridges where none exist.  The company arrived on Sunday, and will train through Thursday as part of their annual two weeks of training.

The soldiers have braved the heat and a strong storm to practice "bridging", by assembling floating platforms called bays into what is known as an improved ribbon bridge........

Mississippi River Near Grand Tower, Illinois

Levee Repairs Delayed By Weather, High Water........

Weather and high river levels have conspired to delay repairs to a nearly 70 year old levee that protects several small southern Illinois communities.  The levee reaches from Randolph County to Union County.

Metal drains below the levee have begun to erode, and are threatening the integrity of the levee.  Work began to reinforce the deteriorating pipes with liners in the levee's 21 gravity fed drains.

The project will also involve replacing a drain that collapsed in June of 2013.  That drain allows water to flow from rural Grand Tower, Illinois........

The "steamboat era" began in the city of St. Louis on July 27, 1817 when the "Zebulon M. Pike" arrived. St. Louis was quickly transformed into a bustling boomtown, commercial center, and inland port

Mississippi River At Prairie Du Rocher

Levee Decertification Could Sink Historic Village........

Prairie Du Rocher officials are in agreement that decertifying the levee protecting the historic village of 650 residents in Randolph County could be a disaster.

Back in 2004, the levee was accredited as a 100 year levee by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, following 20 years of work, and $3.1 million in upgrades.  Thanks to Hurricane Katrina, in 2006, FEMA changed the certification rules.

The village needs to raise $60,000 to fund a study for certifying the levee.  If the levee does not get certified, residents will be hit with higher flood insurance rates, and no state or federal funding for repairs........

Boat Gas News

Report Calls For Repeal Of Renewable Fuel Standard........

A recent report from the think-tank, Competitive Enterprise Institute calls for the repeal of the federal biofuels mandate, citing ethical, economic, as well as real world issues.

The report cautions that attempting to force annual increases in ethanol/oil blending may cause oil refiners to reduce the domestic supply of gasoline and diesel, causing fuel prices to increase.

Author of the report, and senior fellow with the CEI, Marlo Lewis says that Congress should repeal the Renewable Fuel Standard, so that consumer preference and competition drive what fuels succeed or fail in the marketplace........

News Release From BoatUS

8 Ways To Avoid Problems at the Boat Repair Shop

ALEXANDRIA, Va. July 25, 2016 – For over 25 years the BoatUS Consumer Protection department has helped Boat Owners Association of The United States members resolve disputes with repair facilities. The vast majority of shops do the job right, but sometimes they – or boat owners – make mistakes. To see what went wrong and to possibly learn from others, BoatUS has surveyed its BoatUS Dispute Resolution files to identify eight trouble spots that boaters needing work done should know:

1. Finding a shop: Word of mouth is still king. Having American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) and Better Business Bureau (BBB) certifications are also two good signs. Boaters can also check out the BoatUS Consumer Protection Database for complaints filed by BoatUS members.
2. Get it in writing: Get a written estimate before work begins, and remember that it is based on an approximation of how much the job will cost. If work may go beyond the estimated price, you can always direct the shop to obtain your authorization before proceeding with unforeseen repairs. Remember, if it’s not in writing, there’s no way to confirm the work was requested.
3. Is there a guarantee for the work? 30-, 60-, or 90-days are all typical. Ask if parts and labor are included. Don’t wait until after the warranty expires to check the repairs.
4. Remove valuables: Bring small electronics, personal items and fishing gear home.
5. Take photos: It’s always good to take a few “before” time-stamped photos of your boat in the shop (your smart phone may have this feature built-in or there are Apps available). Accidents do sometimes happen, and you may need before and after damage photos to show the shop damage took place and possibly file an insurance claim.
6. Languish at your peril: Avoid having your job pushed to the back burner by staying frequently informed about ongoing repairs. While there are often legitimate delays due to seasonality, parts sourcing, weather, and personnel, if you think you are getting put off, you probably are. Cut losses and find another shop. (Tip: For larger jobs, ask the shop to periodically email you pictures of work in progress. It may help keep the job on schedule.)
7. Inspect, inspect, and inspect: When picking up the boat after completion of repairs, ensure each bit of repair work matches the actual invoice. If you do have a dispute with the final bill, you’re in better legal shape if you pay it in full, preferably on a credit card, and then file a complaint with the shop and/or your credit card company.
8. A note about end of season repairs: Sea trials must take place during the warranty period, which has sometimes caused problems for BoatUS members who put their boats away for the winter before ensuring the repairs are satisfactory. Any open issues found in the springtime will likely come out of the boat owner’s wallet.

RiverBill:

Hello! I hope you enjoyed the weekend on the river!  Usually, I send you pics of beautiful sunsets or river scenery (which I've done today!).

However today, I'm sending a special thanks to Tow Boat USA!  On Saturday evening, friends and I drove pretty far up the Illinois river. It was a beautiful ride until the boat died!  We called TowBoat USA and in about 30 minutes, they were there to save the day!  I highly encourage everyone to get a membership; it's well worth the annual fee!

Until next weekend......

Above are some pictures taken by Capt'n Tony Trice in 2007 showing her traveling under the power lines at Iowa Island.  She had to lower her stacks in order to clear the lines.

Boat Handling

There Is More To Going Fast Than Just Going Fast........

While in some ways driving a boat is similar to driving a car, there are many differences, especially as the speed increases.  While driving 50 mph on the highway will get you honked at in the slow lane, running a boat at that speed feels like you're running considerably faster.

One of the reasons for this phenomenon is that the faster the vessel goes, especially if it is properly trimmed, less of the vessel's hull is in the water.  This makes the vessel seem more responsive to minor adjustments from the helm, but under less control at the onset of a turn.

Also, as the speed increases, boaters may not be used to the closure speeds that accompany it.  When you notice something in front of you, the boat will cover a lot of water before you can react, and then respond.  Another thing to consider is that boats are not equipped with brakes........

RiverBills.com contacted Citi events for more information about the upcoming party and below is the reply

.

My partners and I decided we wanted to do something different on the river and hopefully it will become an annual event. Reggae on the Reggae is like going to Jamaica but right in your backyard. We will have Live DJ and Island games and food. It's open to the public and it a bring your own bottle but drink responsibly. It is kids friendly and we invite all my boaters to join us for a day of fun and entertainment, island style.

Mississippi River Near Arnold, Missouri

A Body Was Recovered From The River........

Saturday morning, the Missouri State Highway Patrol Marine Unit was called out to the Mississippi River near near Arnold to recover a body that was spotted in the water.

It is not known if the body is that of missing kayaker, Dalton S. Bast, who fell into the river after falling from his kayak shortly before 4 am Thursday morning.

Barge workers report that 29 year old Bast was too close to tow lines, striking one prior to going in the water.  The workers tried to throw a line to Bast, but were not able to get to him........

Mississippi River History

Does The Mississippi River Really Originate In South Dakota?

What if the Mississippi River didn't actually begin in Lake Itasca in Minnesota, but instead began in South Dakota?  This question was put forth in an essay by geologist Wendell Duffield in 2012.

Duffield says that Lake Itasca is the cultural source of the Mississippi River, and makes the case that the Minnesota River, and the small town of Veblen, South Dakota is the geological source.

Duffield says that the vast River Warren that had drained part of the ancient glacial Lake Agassiz, eventually becoming the Minnesota River.  He adds that the ancient riverbed is more prominent than the Mississippi River valley as it descends form Lake Itasca........

Mississippi River Shipping

The Mississippi River Offers Efficient, But Underutilized Transportation........

The Mississippi River, and it's tributaries have flowed into the Gulf of Mexico, offering nearby residents a source of food, recreation, and transportation.

When the Mississippi River is discussed, they talk of it's effect on history, the floods, and the era of flatboats and steamboats that moved goods and people from place to place.

What isn't discussed is why the first and largest superhighway in the nation is still underutilized by companies moving goods produced in northern factories southward........

Riverfront Plan Will Leave Towboat Company Homeless........

The boaters that use the Hannibal Marina are not the only ones unhappy with the recently approved plans for revitalizing the Hannibal riverfront.

Canton Marine Towing Company has been located along the Hannibal riverfront for decades.  The newly adopted plans will leave the towing company without a home.

This week, Casey Herschler, CMT's operations/logistics director addressed the Hannibal City Council with a plan that would make room for the company on the riverfront........

Mississippi River At Minneapolis, Minnesota

Two Locks Reopened Friday....  With A Warning....

On Friday, two locks on the Upper Mississippi River in Minneapolis re-opened to recreational boat traffic after high river levels shut them down last weekend.

Last Saturday, the flow of the Mississippi River exceeded 30,000 cubic feet per second.  This prompted the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to close the Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam in Minneapolis, and Lock and Dam No.1 near Minnehaha Park.

The Corps says that the river levels are still high, and they are encouraging recreational boaters to be cautious, and on the lookout for floating trees, logs, and other debris that can damage their vessels........
