Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

Towing Company Voices Concern Over Riverfront Plans........

During the last meeting of the Hannibal City Council, plans for rehabilitating the city's riverfront were discussed, and the plan chosen by the council will see the marina removed.

The future of another riverfront fixture, the Canton Marine Towing Company, has yet to be determined.  During last night's City Council meeting, Casey Herschler, an employee of Canton Marine, spoke before the council to defend his company's presence on the riverfront.

Herschler says that Canton Marine provides valuable services for the region, as they assist small vessels in distress, help deflect vessels away from the Mark Twain Riverboat, and they also offer a significant economic impact on the City of Hannibal........

Paddlers Shove Off For The MR340........

Early Tuesday morning, paddlers took to the Missouri River at Kansas City, Kansas for the start of the Missouri River 340 race.  Starting at 7 am, solo canoes departed, and at 8 am, all the other canoes left.

The MR340 is a canoe and kayak race that takes place over the 340 Missouri River miles between Kansas City and St. Charles, Missouri.

The racers will have 88 hours to complete the race.  Scott Mansker, the race director says that some of the racers will sleep some during the hottest portion of the day, and paddle during the cooler times........

Mississippi River Near West Alton, Missouri

Residents Working To Thwart Future Flooding........

Over the past winter, the residents of West Alton, Missouri were threatened with flooding, and now many of the residents are working to combat future floods, by raising their homes.

West Alton is located right on the Mississippi River, in an area prone to flood.  According to resident Frank McGhee, over six homes have been, or will be raised.

McGhee noted that the floodwaters in December receded within a few weeks, and only a handful of homes had to be condemned........

Asian Carp Update

Budget Woes Place Carp Control Project On Hold in Missouri........

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon recently cut $115 million from the state's $27 billion budget, meaning that plans for controlling the invasive Asian carp are on hold.

The University of Missouri's Fisher Delta Research Center had been expecting $250,000 in funding that would help finance a start-up company that intended to catch the Asian carp for consumption.

Without the funding, the project, and the approximately 50 jobs the project would have created has been placed on hold.  Research chief Trent Haggard said that the lack of funding will delay a project that is beneficial to the region........

The Recycled Mississippi Crew Reaches Cape Girardeau........

Currently, six people from all over the globe are taking a trip down the Mississippi River aboard a vessel constructed out of ninety percent recycled materials.

The Recycled Mississippi crew recently docked their unique vessel in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.  Their goal is to get the word out on recycling, as well as demonstrating what can be done with items most people simply throw away.

At one time, the Mississippi River was one of the most polluted rivers in the world, but it has been cleaned up significantly over the past 30 years, and Recycled Mississippi intends to get the message out to keep waterways clean for future generations........

News Release From BoatUS

Celebrating 50 Years, BoatUS Hosts Member Appreciation Event July 28 in Chicago, IL

CHICAGO, IL, July 19, 2016 – It was 50 years ago that Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) got its start as the result of one man’s desire to make recreational boating better for boaters, sailors, and anglers. To celebrate this milestone, the nation’s largest recreational boat owner advocacy, services and safety organization announced today the fourth in a series of local celebrations to say thanks to its over half million members.

A BoatUS “50th Anniversary Member Appreciation Event” will be held Thursday, July 28 at River Roast Social House, 315 N. LaSalle St., Chicago, IL. Members and friends of the association are invited to stop by anytime between 6:00PM and 9:00PM. BoatUS President Margaret Bonds Podlich will hoast the informal celebration with hors d’oeuvres and prizes – including a Star Clippers cruise for two. “It’s a way to gather and thank our BoatUS members for their continued support over the years, and to get with other boaters to talk boating,” said Podlich. Local TowBoatUS Captains will also attend.

All event details and history information is posted at BoatUS.com/50.

RiverBill:

We couldn't make it out in time to go to the Blessing of the Fleet Fundraiser on Saturday, so we took a cruise up river and back. We didn't expect to see a ship like this on our drive home! It's the "Queen of the Mississippi". I looked it up online and it's pretty neat! It has bedrooms, a putting green, a restaurant, and a few lounges. People can go on cruises for 5-20 days at a time. I'm not looking to leave our pool anytime soon, but it could be a fun getaway.

The summer is going by way too fast! Let's all make the most of it!

YesterYear's Pictures of this Day in 2005 ....  were taken by RiverBill

I stopped in and chatted with Captain Jack and Denise at Captain Jack's Bar & Grill on Dardenne Slough on this day in 2005.  The following was the update about the on-going construction:

A fence has been put up around the outside tiki bar area and some really good looking fiberglass palm trees are in place with water misters to help keep everyone cool. The entire tiki bar will be covered with sand before the opening. They are moving right along with the renovation and improvements on the bar and restaurant as well as the entire harbor. Could be open for business in a couple of weeks !

Jack told me an interesting story that he wants to share with everyone. The bar / restaurant building originally had a screened in porch that they decided to improve by replacing the screens with glass windows. Jack found out that because the building is in a floodplain he needs a "waiver" from the Core of Engineers stating that the new windows will not impede the flow of the Mississippi River !

Corps Closing Minneapolis Locks Due To High Flows........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District has announced that they have closed their Minneapolis locks to recreational vessel traffic on account of high river flows.

On Saturday, the Lower St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam No.1, located near Minnehaha Falls, saw flows of 30,000 cubic feet per second.

The Corps' Mississippi Valley Division lock and dam regulation manual requires that the locks be closed to recreational traffic when water flows reach 30,000 cubic feet per second, as high flows are not safe........

Funds Raised To Save Route 66 Bridge........

This year, there has been a renewed effort to save the Route 66 State Park Bridge over the Meramec River in Eureka from being demolished.

If enough funds are raised by the end of 2016, the Missouri Department of Transportation may spare the span.  Bill Hart and Ruth Keenoy of the group, Save the Meramec Route 66 Bridge want the span restored for pedestrian and cyclists to use.

The Route 66 State park Bridge is part of the iconic Route 66, and it once linked both portions of the park over the Meramec River.  MoDOT had deemed the span dangerous seven years ago, and removed the road deck in 2012........

Alton Man Participating In MR340 Race........

On Tuesday, July 19, Alton resident Logan Sims will be competing in the MR340 River Race, which is an 88 hour endurance race on the Missouri River, between Kansas City and St. Charles.

Sims had competed in last year's race, but this year will be special, as he is going to be paddling to raise money for St. Louis-based charity Friends of Kids With Cancer.

He notes that paddling a canoe or kayak along the Missouri River is not like a float trip, as the river is running about 3.5 miles per hour.  He adds that some of last year's MR340 winners were averaging around 10 miles per hour........

This week, the Missouri River Academy, sponsored by Missouri River Relief, is giving teens an opportunity to learn about a waterway that they see all the time and take for granted.

Every day, campers get the chance to see a different portion of the Missouri River ecosystem, as well as learning ways to preserve it for future generations.

According to Missouri River Relief education coordinator, Kristen Schulte, they have offered similar lessons on the river before, however, this is the first week-long program they've tried........

News Release From BoatUS

Pokémon Go and Boating: Three Tips from BoatUS

ALEXANDRIA, VA, July 14, 2016 – The reality-game-meets-exercise app currently taking the nation by storm, “Pokémon Go,” now has 21 million users every day – reportedly the most successful mobile game ever in the US. The game features characters called Pokémon that players capture in the real world using a combination of GPS and augmented reality. That also means that Pokémon-mania has also come to the water and with it, BoatUS, the national boating advocacy, services and safety group has three tips for playing Pokémon Go while boating:

1. Be aware: The US Coast Guard reports “Operator Inattention” as one of the five main primary contributing factors in accidents. When searching for a “water type” Pokémon such as “Magikarp” on a waterway, let the first mate or friend handle the cell phone while the captain keeps a safe lookout.
2. Watch cell phone battery use: Users report the game eats up a smartphone’s battery charge. With many recreational boaters today relying on their cell phones for communication, it would be wise to bring along a spare charger, or use battery saving mode. BoatUS also reminds boaters that only a VHF radio can summon emergency help from the closest rescuers, ensuring the fastest response.
3. Have fun: The BoatUS National Headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia offers a Pokémon “gym” located next to the iconic BoatUS Buoy at 880 S. Pickett Street. At lunch, some BoatUS employees can be seen playing the game. (Insider’s tip: The yellow Pokémon Go BoatUS Marine Insurance underwriting team often battles other BoatUS departments, and for a limited time, free boat insurance quotes will be available to all players.)

This press release reprinted by permission of Scott Croft of BoatUS.

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

Recycled Mississippi Crew Is In Alton........

On Tuesday, the Recycled Mississippi crew stopped off at the Alton Marina to take a short break before resuming their 1,816 mile journey down the Mississippi River, from Minneapolis to the Gulf of Mexico.

The Recycled Mississippi expedition is made up of six men, four of which are from overseas.  According to expedition leader, Dan Cullum of New Zealand, the crew has undertaken this journey to encourage recycling, and eliminate all single-use plastic.

The crew constructed their wooden-decked pontoon boat using recycled materials.  They built floats using plastic containers, secured with chicken wire.  The repurposed plastic bottles are visible as the vessel heads down river.  The pontoon boat features an outboard motor for propulsion, and is also equipped with a transparent sail harness for wind power........

Responders Rescue 8 From Beached Boat........

Wednesday afternoon, the Hannibal Fire Department rescued eight people after the boat they were aboard ended up stuck on a Mississippi River sandbar.

Assistant Fire Chief, Jeff Frame says that the rescue boat was sent out as a storm was leaving the area.  He added that the people were out on the river during the storm.

The vessel reportedly ran aground after it's operator attempted to cut around a sandbar too quickly.  The boat was found south of Hannibal, approximately a half mile below the cement plant........

News Release From BoatUS

BoatUS Delivers Over 24,000 Boaters' Comments Urging EPA to Stop Adding More Ethanol to the Nation's Gasoline Supply

Washington DC, July 13, 2016 – On July 11, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) President Margaret Podlich (L) and Government Affairs Manager David Kennedy (R), delivered over 24,000 comments from recreational boaters to EPA Headquarters in Washington DC to urge the agency to stop adding more ethanol to the nation’s gasoline supply. BoatUS had asked the boating public to add their voice to a proposal to increase the amount of ethanol that must be blended into the nation’s gasoline supply for 2017. If adopted, these proposed levels will require the use of a record amount of ethanol, forcing higher-level ethanol fuel blends (including E15 or 15% ethanol) into gas pumps and at more gas stations.

“A sticker on the pump mixed in with all the other labels may be the only warning for E15 gasoline,” said Podlich. Most marine engines are built to only work with up to 10% ethanol, and it is illegal to use gas containing more than 10% ethanol in any marine engine. The national boating advocacy, services and safety group has voiced its concern for the significant potential for misfueling, putting boaters at risk by using fuel that will damage their engines.

Boat Sales

Analyst Increases June Sales Estimates........

A marine industry analyst with Wells Fargo has saying that retail sales in the main powerboat segments likely saw an increase of 6 - 8 % during June, up from prior forecasts of a 4 - 6 % increase.

The increase in projections came after senior analyst Timothy Conder conversed with industry lenders.  Reportedly, the strong late May retail trends continued into the first half of June.

Conder said that June's retail rhythm was influenced by more difficult comps as the month continued, as well as a reduction in inventory as model year 2016 wraps up........

River Dog Likely Killed By Blue-Green Algae........

Over the Fourth of July Weekend, two year old river dog Rhone died shortly after spending several hours playing in the Mississippi River.

Rhone's owner Jackie Hayes said that Rhone laid in the sand in a rather awkward position, and 30 minutes later, she was vomiting.  By the time her owners were able to get Rhone to a vet, she was having seizures.  She died three hours later.

The veterinarian that treated Rhone said that he could not say for certain that blue-green algae caused the dog's death without an autopsy, however, the symptoms seem to point in that direction.........

The Picture of the Day.....  was sent to us by Bill Tullock & Kim Barrett..

Bill,

James is a wonderful Chef. Recently hired. This delicious dish he asked us to try is thick shell rolled pasta, seasoned properly, 3 cheese, with bacon! I took a go box back! I could not stop myself! He adds something new weekly! He is truly amazing, and I am not one to give reviews, but James is AMAZING...

Bill Tullock & Kim Barrett..
Sincerely signed

PS: He's our new Chef at the YCSTL. He's a great Chef!!! Smiles all the time is proud of his work

RiverBill says.... RiverBill needs to work on his spelling.  I identified "Chef James" as "Chief James."   So sorry James.
