Boating Safety

Report:  Work Still Must Be Done On Boating Safety........

Last week, the U.S. Coast Guard released the 2015 Recreational Boating Statistics report, which reveals some positive improvements in boating safety, but some setbacks as well.

During 2015, boating deaths increased by 2.6% to 626, up from 610 in 2014.  The total number of accidents rose 2.3%, from 4,064 to 4,158.

Boating injuries during 2015 decreased by 2.4%, from 2,678 to 2,613.  2015's 626 boating deaths is still the third lowest amount on record........

Missouri River Shipping

Shipping Renaissance Occurring On The River........

Slowly, the Missouri River is beginning to return to it's roots as a transportation corridor for commodities, like grain, fertilizer, and scrap metal.  Barge industry insiders note they are working against the belief that the Missouri River is not reliable enough to be profitable.

While some small private barge companies didn't stop using the Missouri River, during the late 90s and early 2000s, many public ports along the 760 mile stretch between Sioux City, Iowa ad St. Louis shut down due to a combination of drought, low commodity prices, the economic recession, and politics caused shippers to ship by rail and trucks.

After the droughts eased, and commodity prices stabilized, interest was renewed in reopening a few public ports.  Last August, the Woodswether terminal port in Kansas City reopened.  It was the first since 2007.  The St. Joseph Regional Port Authority is currently improving their infrastructure, and hopes to attract barge traffic within the year........

Boating Safety

Keep Safety In Mind When On The Water........

Before hitting the water, boaters need to make some preparations before unloading their boat from the trailer for a little fun in the sun.

According to Fondulac Park District Police Chief Michael Johnson, his crews are called out to about 15 incidents on the Illinois River each year, which include boating accidents, and those that fall into the water.

Communication when having a problem on the water is critical, as it determines how responders respond to your call.  Making sure life jackets are in use, the vessel's lighting operates, and making sure the boat isn't overloaded is critical as well........

Mississippi River Journeys

Veteran Preparing For Paddle Down The Mississippi River........

Bernie Giles, a retired Army Veteran from Clarksville, Tennessee, is planning on paddling the length of the Mississippi River in a canoe for personal growth, as well as a way to raise funds for fellow Veterans.

Giles intends to launch his canoe in Minnesota's Lake Itasca during the first week in June.  The trip will help raise funds and awareness for Homes for Troops, a group that builds homes for wounded Veterans.

Giles says that he lost the brotherhood that he found in the Army, and hopes the trip will be similar to boot camp, in that he will be broken down, and rebuild himself better over the journey........

Historic Shipwrecks

If Captain Cook's Ship Is Located, Who Owns It?

If the ship the celebrated explorer Captain James Cook sailed around the world is located, the state of Rhode Island will own the shipwreck outright.

Back in 1999, the state petitioned the federal court to secure shipwrecks on the bottom of Newport Harbor, and name Rhode Island the owner.  The court agreed.  Researchers think that Cook's ship, the Endeavour is located on the harbor bottom.

The researchers are thinking that the Endeavour is one of thirteen ships scuttled by the British during the Revolutionary War in 1778 to blockade the harbor........

Missouri River In Boone County, Missouri

Flooding Along The Missouri River Causes Trouble Over The Weekend........

Over the Memorial Day Weekend, plenty of people across Mid-Missouri had a change of plans on account of flooding along the banks of the Missouri River.

On Friday, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency in anticipation of severe storm warnings.  Nixon's biggest concern was flooding along the Missouri River.

By Sunday, the Missouri Department of Transportation reported some road closures in Saline and Johnson Counties.  MoDOT did not mention road closures along the river, however........

Officials Warn Toxic Algae Appearing On Lakes, Waterways........

Illinois officials are warning people spending time on Illinois lakes and waterways to keep an eye out for a kind of rapidly growing algae that could cause illness and other health issues.

The Illinois Department of Health and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency are saying that the blue-green algae blooms are starting to appear on ponds and lakes across the state.

Some of the algal blooms can produce toxic chemicals that can cause vomiting, rashes, wheezing and coughing in humans and animals.  The young, elderly, or those with compromised immune systems are particularly susceptible........

Mississippi River At New Orleans, Louisiana

Parts Of New Orleans Sinking Into The River........

NASA recently discovered that the city of New Orleans is peppered with subsidence, and at levels worse than previously thought.  Parts of the city are sinking at a rate of two inches per year.

The space agency studies the earth using satellite images as well as airborne radar, and has found the issue is not only due to the city's geology, but also industrial processes.  In recent years, sinkholes have been appearing across the city.

Reportedly, the highest rates of subsidence, or sinking, were found along the Mississippi River near the major industrial areas in Norco and Michoud, with up to two inches of sinking each year.........

Fire Fighters Save Kayakers From Raging River........

On Saturday, a couple from St. Francois County were kayaking on the Big River in the St. Francois State Park, when they were overwhelmed by the river's raging current.  Big River Fire Chief David Pratte says that the couple had never been kayaking before.

Reportedly, the man got himself caught in a tree limb, and was hanging on for his life.  The woman, however, continued to be swept downstream by the rough and swiftly moving water.

The man was able to call for help on his cell phone, and responders with the Big River Fire Department and the Bonne Terre Fire Department were able to save the couple from the river........

UPPER MISS RM 203.0 CHANNEL CONDITIONS/AIDS TO NAVIGATION
Due to shoaling in the vicinity of Mile 203.0, there has been a significant change in the navigation channel. Mariners who are unfamiliar with the area or that have not transited the area recently are urged to exercise caution in the area.

MILE 287.5 - CONSTRUCTION
Continuing until approximately April 2017, Ted Shanks Conservation Area is conducting construction operations in the vicinity of Mile 287.5, RDB. Mariners are requested NOT to hold up in this area while construction is ongoing. Mariners are urged to exercise caution in the area.

MILE 301.2 - VISIBLE OBSTRUCTION

Flood Concerns Prompt State Of Emergency Declaration.........

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has declared a state of emergency in preparation for more flooding brought about by a series of storm systems moving across the state.

High winds, heavy rains, flooding and flash flooding has been occurring across Missouri since Tuesday, and additional storms are forecast over the weekend.

Governor Nixon said that the regions surrounding the Missouri River, and it's tributaries in west-central Missouri are particularly troubling, as additional rain may cause some levees to be overtopped.........

News Release........

Enjoy America’s Waterways, Play It Safe and Return Home Alive

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Before you head out for a day on or near the water, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, encourages you to make sure you have life jackets for everyone and that you wear them.

In the last 10 years, 88 percent of all public water-related fatalities in Corps’ bodies of waterwere men and 68 percent were between the ages of 20 and 60, according to data compiled by the Corps’ National Operations Center for Water Safety. The center also reports that 84 percent of all public water-related fatalities involved people not wearing life jackets and found that the greatest number of water-related fatalities involved people swimming in areas not designated for swimming.

Swimming in natural waters is not the same as swimming in a pool. Regardless of how strong of a swimmer you are, you can get into trouble and be gone within seconds. It takes an average of 60 seconds for an adult to drown and just 20 seconds for a child to drown. Swimming ability also decreases with age.

Swim in designated areas which have been inspected to provide a safe swimming environment. At all Corps’ beaches, you swim at your own risk. Adults please watch your children. Most people drowned within 10 feet of safety. Many shorelines have drop offs and you can instantly be in water over your head or pulled under by the current.

Cold Water: Even a strong swimmer can drown from a fall into cold water, because it causes an involuntary gasp reflex. A life jacket can help save your life by allowing time for rescue. Some researchers believe cold water is anything lower than normal body temperature of 98.6°F.

Life Jackets Worn…Nobody Mourns. Always wear the right size and type of life jacket to help ensure that you return home safely. Learn more at PleaseWearIt.com.

BoatUS, NMMA Warn Against Misfueling........

The Memorial Day Weekend is upon us, ushering in the start of the summer boating season, and the National Marine Manufacturers Association and Boat Owners Association of the United States is reminding boaters to be vigilant when fueling their boats.

The federal government is raising their Renewable Fuel Standard, which means that increased amounts of biofuels, including corn ethanol, must be entered into the U.S. fuel supply each year.

BoatUS President Margaret Podlich says that boaters cannot assume that all fuels sold at gas stations will work in marine engines, as boats are designed to run on fuels containing no more than 10% ethanol........

Two Rivers Prepping For Summer Habitat Management........

This time of year, waterfowl, including ducks and geese are spending their time in their breeding grounds, but in the meantime, the crew at Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge is working to prepare habitat for the fall and spring migrations.

Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge crucial food and shelter for hundreds of thousands of waterfowl during their migrations.  During the fall, the birds rely on energy-providing plants for their trip south.  During the spring flight north, wetlands insects provide nourishment guaranteeing that they can continue to the breeding grounds in the Upper Midwest and Canada.

Crews will slowly remove water from the wetlands, gradually exposing the soil, making sure plants can grow.  This drawdown will happen in the refuge's Swan Lake in Calhoun County, Gilbert Lake near the Brussels Ferry, and Prairie Pond in Batchtown, Illinois........

High River Levels Will Affect Memorial Day Plans........

People that are planning on heading out on the Current River over the Memorial Day weekend will likely not get to use a canoe or raft, as officials have shut down the waterway to non-motorized vehicles.

Lindel Gregory, the Lower Current District Ranger for the Current River says that Memorial Day is their big start to the summer season, however, this year will be slow due to rain and high water.

Gregory adds that any weekend that people can't float, the local businesses are affected, as they depend so much on those summer weekends that it is difficult for them to recover........

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

Proposed Riverfront Plans........

Friday, May 27 is the deadline for offering public comments on the proposed Hannibal riverfront renovation plans.  The deadline is coming just over two weeks after two proposals for Hannibal's riverfront were revealed to the public.

The proposals are virtually identical, with the exception that one plan retains the marina, and the other proposal sacrifices the marina for more park space.

During the May 19 meeting of the Park Board, Andy Dorian, director of the Parks & Recreation Department, said that 70 responses favored filling in the marina, and 35 favored keeping the docking area........

Reader Commentary

Mississippi Riverfront at Hannibal, Mo

A Call To Arms

We need your help my river friends from near to far! Our city of Hannibal Mo is looking to rehab our riverfront area and make a port for multiple cruise ships to be able to stop at one time in our amazing riverfront. This is a wonderful thing for our community and much needed to bring extra tourism and dollars to our downtown area. However in doing this there is two plans to accomplish this. Plan A removes our harbor and replaces it with grass and concrete leaving only a boat ramp and small courtesy dock. Plan B leaves our harbor and yet still accommodates the large cruise ships. Plan B costs more money and it looks as thou our community leaders are leaning towards removing the harbor. This would be detrimental to our boating community as safe harbors are becoming more and more scarce along this amazing river. So I ask for your help in our effort to keep our public marina alive by contacting our city leaders in a calm and productive manner. Hannibal city hall, board of parks and recreation, city council, the mayor James Hark 573-221-0111 ext. 202, city manager Jeff LaGarce 573-221-0111 ext. 202 , George Walley economic development 573-221-1033 and Northeast Missouri Economic Development Council.

Boating Safety

Boating Season Has Started........

It's National Safe Boating Week, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources has a few tips to help boaters enjoy being on the water this summer.

Chris Young, spokesman for the IDNR reminds boaters that Illinois laws apply to boaters as well.  The Illinois Conservation Police will be out on the water looking for drunken boaters.

While it is recommended that anyone on the water should be wearing a life jacket, anyone on a personal watercraft must wear a life jacket........

Nautical Oddities

19th Century Vessel Found Under Home........

Crews working to raise a waterfront home in New Jersey made an odd nautical discovery.  They found a 44 foot wooden vessel, dating back to the 19th century.

The fully intact vessel was found under Eileen Scanlon's bungalow on Wednesday.  The 12 foot wide boat was likely used to transport coal and other goods along area waterways.

There had been rumors about the existence of the vessel circulating for years, and Scanlon said she had caught a glimpse of the boat in the crawlspace shortly after buying the home........

Missouri Waterways

A Few Missouri Rivers Reaching High Levels........

Officials are keeping tabs on the high water levels along the Current and Jacks Fork Rivers in the southwestern portion of Missouri in order to determine whether if portions of them need to be closed to paddlers over the Memorial Day weekend.

Dena Matteson, spokeswoman for the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, said that it is difficult to determine whether rivers will reach flood stage several days in advance.  Both rivers can rise quickly.

Matteson added that they close sections of the rivers when they rise above flood stage.  A portion of the Current River had been closed Wednesday due to storms that occurred on Tuesday........

National Safe Boating Week

Coast Guard:  Get Vessel Safety Check Before Departing........

The U.S. Coast Guard is advising boaters to have a free Vessel Safety Check, prior to shoving off for a trip, not only during National Safe Boating Week, but also during boating season.

A courtesy Vessel Safety Check may be performed wherever the vessel is located, whether it is in a slip, at the boat ramp, or in your driveway.

The inspection can be performed by a certified member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, or a Power Squadron Vessel Examiner in about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the boat........

No Flooding In The Forecast........

Over the past several weeks, the Midwest has seen several storms roll through the region, and the next week will bring the possibility of more rainfall.

So far, there are no forecasts for the Missouri River to flood, however, flooding is likely for the tributaries that empty into the Missouri River.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon said that he is concerned, and the state emergency management office will be keeping tabs on the Missouri River levels.  Nixon adds that they are prepared to respond if necessary........

Amren:  No Plans To Lower Lake Level,  No Flood Concerns........

While the National Weather Service has forecast daily chances for rain beyond Memorial Day, Ameren Missouri has said that they are not concerned about potential flooding at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Lakefront homeowners are concerned, as they watched the lake creep into their backyards, and into some homes, twice during 2015.  Lakefront business owners are not only concerned about property damage, but economic losses during the "busy season".

There are some that are calling on Amren to start lowering the levels of the lake, which is currently at 659 feet, in anticipation of rain.  Full pool on the Lake is 660 feet.  Amren says that they have no intention of lowering the Lake over the next several days........

Meramec River At Arnold, Missouri

Park Damaged By Floods Reopened For Repairs........

Late last year, and early this year, flood waters from the Meramec River caused heavy damage to Arnold City Park, closing it down for several months.

Recently, the park was reopened so that repairs could be made.  Last week, Arnold's City Council approved a bid for nearly $90,000 submitted by Eureka-based Gershenson Construction Co. for the repairs.

Work will include an asphalt overlay to complete the park's trail, do repair work around the pavilion, and make repairs and pave the road between the pavilion and the dog park........

Des Moines River At Des Moines, Iowa

Bridge To Be Raised To Meet Flood Standards........

This winter, the historic Red Bridge spanning the Des Moines River, which is a tributary of the Mississippi River, will be closed down, so that crews can raise it to meet updated flood guidelines.

Back in 2011, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers revised their flood rules for the Des Moines River, and as a result, the span is too low.

The city of Des Moines will spend $2.5 million raising the bridge four and a half. feet.  According to Pam Cooksey, Des Moines City Engineers, raising the bridge 4 1/2 feet will gain 6 inches upstream, meaning there will be no need to reconstruct nearby levees and floodwalls........

Lower Mississippi River

The River Levels Are Poised To Fall........

Back in February, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closed the Bonnet Carre Spillway, and ever since, the Mississippi River levels have been neither too high, nor too low, but rather, just right.

Soon, however, anglers will need to start paying attention to river levels, as the forecast is that they are going to be falling in the near future.

Jeff Graschel, river forecaster with the National Weather Service says that typically, between March and May, the Mississippi River sees it's seasonal highs, and that is occurring now.  He adds that toward the end of the month, the river should start falling........

We had the pleasure of taking a cruise on the 85 foot HMS Destiny on Sunday from Alton Marina to the Loading Dock and back. Henry, the owner, was an amazing host and Captain Glenn Sadowski showed some fine boat handling skill. Attached is a picture of our group after disembarking at the Loading Dock in Grafton taken by Glenn and a pic of the yacht at Alton Marina. We also witnessed a "Shark Attack" on the Mississippi while at Grafton. I've uploaded some videos to YouTube and Maureen has posted some pictures on facebook. Feel free to use any way you wish.

Yesteryear's Pictures of the Day in 2007.... were from Captn. Greg Jost

1929 on the Mississippi River

Greg wrote in his letter;

Hello Bill,
These are the pictures I have told you about. They were taken in the Summer of 1929.  The one on the beach (top) was taken right across from what is now the Duck Club, facing down towards Grafton.  You can see the bluffs in the distant background.  The second guy from the right (sitting down) is my grandfather, Earl Gruenenfelder.  It was his boat.

The second picture(bottom), with the boat running, has my grandfather sitting up with my great-great grandmother towards the front, my great grandfather, Edmond Gruenefelder is in the middle wearing a hat, and my great grandmother in the rear.  It was taken in the little slough below the Duck Club.  They had a club house below North Shore from the late 20's that was eventually destroyed in the flood of '93.    I still have the anchor of this boat in my living room.

Hope you enjoy these,

Greg Jost

Mississippi River

UPPER MISS RM 203.0 CHANNEL CONDITIONS/AIDS TO NAVIGATION
Due to shoaling in the vicinity of Mile 203.0, there has been a significant change in the navigation channel. Illinois River

MILE 40.1 - CHANNEL CONDITION/USACE ADVISORY

MILE 3.0 - BRIDGE MAINTENANCE

BoatUS, West Marine Offer Boating Safety Initiatives........

As part of National Safe Boating Week, which will run through Friday,  BoatUS and West Marine have come up with a few safety initiatives.

BoatUS recommends choosing a life jacket that you will wear, take a free boating safety course, and file simple float plans when you hit the water.

West Marine is hosting a week-long, safety oriented fundraiser in stores across North America, as well as on westmarine.com.  Through Friday, West Marine will donate $5 from each lifejacket purchase (up to $30,000) to their not for profit BlueFuture Fund, that supports getting youth on and around the water........

VHF-FM Radios Suggested For Boaters In Distress........

Given the popularity of cell phones these days, many boaters are quite comfortable hitting the water with only a phone for emergencies.

The U.S. Coast Guard actually recommends equipping your vessel with a VHF-FM radio, which is intended primarily for short range communications, typically 5 - 10 miles, and up to 20 miles to a Coast Guard station.

In the event of trouble, boaters are encouraged to stay close to the radio if possible, even if the message has been received.  The reason is the Coast Guard can locate you quickly, if you are able to transmit a signal that rescue vessels or aircraft can pick up........

Town Turns To Crowdfunding To Pay For Levee Accreditation........

The historic Village of Prairie Du Rocher, Illinois is looking to a modern form of fundraising in order to help pay for new FEMA certification for the 16.5 mile long levee protecting the town.

Stephen Gonzalez, the levee commissioner, says that as of 2004, the levee was accredited to FEMA standards for a 100 year flood.  This effort took 20 years, and millions of dollars in improvements.

Following Hurricane Katrina, FEMA revised their levee accreditation standards, meaning that Prairie Du Rocher must again recertify the levee.  To Fund the changes, the town has set up a GoFundMe page........
