Mississippi River Paddler and Adventurist

Henk van der Klok

Where in the heck is Henk at Now ?

I sent my friend,  Henk van der Klok, and email to see what is up to these days.   Henk is a Dutch adventurist who paddled the length of the Mississippi River in 2013 by himself.  We got the chance to meet him when he stopped in St. Louis for a few days.

Henk wrote:

Hi Bill,

Great to hear from you! I'm doing very well.

I spent the past 7 months living a semi-settled life in New Zealand. During this time I was a vineyard worker, a winemaker, a cherry picker, a cruise ship entertainer and a pizza baker.

I just moved over to Australia where I'm working producing olive oil. A couple more weeks to go and then I'm off to visit my family in Holland because earlier this year I became an uncle :)

Things have changed a bit for me and I'm nearing the point where I want to settle down. I'm going to do one more big trip and than give settled life a go. The way it looks now I'll move to Brighton, England. This is only a few hours from my family in Holland, so it's great. Plus I get to speak English there, which I love.

The adventure I'm planning is to walk to Jerusalem with a donkey, and without money. It's kind of a final attempt to prove for once and for all that the world we see on TV is not the real world. The real world is filled with kindness.

Part of this strong belief comes from all the kindness you all showed me on the Mississippi, and with this last trip I want to show that this is true around the world :)

How are things for you? What's happening? How are you spending most of your time these days? How are all the great people in and around pool 26?

Wishing you all the best!

Henk

LL&W Helps Elkay Employees Clean Up The River........

On May 13, thirty five employees with Elkay Manufacturing in Savanna and Lanark volunteered to help the efforts of Chad Pregracke, and Living Lands & Waters as they worked to clean up the Mississippi River.

Pregracke has been an ardent supporter of Elkay's efforts to reduce pollution with their bottle filling system.  Last year, the company donated one of their EZ H2O filling systems for use on the LL&W barge.

LL&W has participated in cleaning up 23 rivers across 20 states, since it's inception in 2010.  For 2016, the LL&W team will be participating in their 1,000ht clean up event........

Meriwether Lewis arrived in St. Charles from St. Louis in preparation for their expedition, not by boat as William Clark did a few days earlier, but instead via St. Charles Rock Road.

The building of the Delta Queen and her identical twin boat, the Delta King was completed on May 20, 1927. The construction of the boats started in 1924 on the River Clyde at the William Denny & Brothers Ltd., in California Dumbarton, Scotland and then assembled at Banner Island Shipyard in Stockton.
William Denny & Brothers Ltd., Dumbarton, Scotland built the boat's machinery. Krupp Stahlwerke AG, Germany forged the paddlewheel shaft and the cranks.

Missouri River At St. Louis, Missouri

The Secret To STL's Water Is Good Sources........

St. Louis has always had a reputation for clean and good tasting tap water, and Curtis Skouby, the Director of Public Utilities believes that the city has good water sources to start with.

The main St. Louis water treatment facility is located just south of the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, but since the rivers haven't quite mixed, the plant draws mainly Missouri River water.

Skouby says that there may be quite a lot of sediment in the Missouri River water, but there are probably fewer trace contaminants in it because they aren't drawing in Chicago's discharge, which is coming down the Illinois River........

EPA Suggests Increasing Renewable Fuels In 2017........

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has proposed raising the renewable fuel volume requirements for 2017, much to the dismay of the National Marine Manufacturers Association.

The NMMA has long opposed increased levels of ethanol in the fuel supply, on account of damage caused to engines and other boat components.

A NMMA spokesman said that the EPA's proposal raises the amount of higher blends of ethanol to record levels, pushing well beyond the current E10 blend wall

St. Paul District Celebrates Anniversary With A Some Paddling........

This summer, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, will be celebrating the district's sesquicentennial by paddling canoes along a portion of the Upper Mississippi River.

A ceremonial christening of the canoe will kick off the journey from Lake Itaska on May 20, at 8:30 am.  Each weekend, volunteers will paddle the canoe toward Guttenberg, with the goal of arriving on August 17.

This date is significant in that Major Gouverneur K. Warren, a Civil War hero and West Point Graduate, arrived in St. Paul, Minnesota, and was tasked with setting up an engineering office........

Flood Prevention

Restoration Of Prairie Grasses May Mitigate Future Floods........

Currently, scientists with the University of Missouri are looking into the possibility that the restoration of Missouri's native prairie grasses could improve the health of the waterways, and mitigate future floods.

The root systems of native Missouri prairie grasses run from 5 to 15 feet deep, which acts like a sponge, allowing for the storage of a significant amount of water.

Over the past 200 years, the plants native to the Missouri plains have, for the most part, been removed and replaced with farmland, which allows water to run off, causing waterways to rapidly rise........

Corps of Engineers asks everyone to practice smart water safety
during National Safe Boating Week

May 21-27 is National Safe Boating Week and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers wants to remind everyone to be safe as they enjoy their favorite water based activities.

If you haven’t shopped for a life jacket in a while, you will be surprised by the variety of new styles available. There are many designs that are far more comfortable than the choices in the past. Please take the time to find a jacket that is comfortable for you and make a commitment to wear it while on the water.

Here are some more safety tips:

Boaters:
· Take a safe boating course;
· Ensure all required safety equipment is onboard and serviceable;
· Wear your life jacket – don’t just carry one on board; and
· Check the weather forecast and file a float plan with a friend of family member.

Swimmers:
· Never rely on toys such as inner tubes and water wings to stay afloat;
· Don’t overestimate your swimming skills; and
· Swim only in designated swimming areas and never swim alone.

The Corps reminds boaters to exercise caution and be vigilant when boating in the area because rivers currents are strong. Submerged logs and other debris below the water’s surface can cause severe damage. Always wear your life vest, as events can happen quickly.

For more information on how to be safe while on the water, please visit: http://watersafety.usace.army.mil/

Boating Lifestyles

What Does Your Boat Name Say About You?

When boaters name their boats, often it becomes a statement on the owner's personality.  Is the owner a day trader?  Liquid Assets might be a good choice.  Like to spend your time wetting a line?  Reel Therapy would fit.  Recently divorced?  Ex's Alimony would be a fun name.

Regardless of a boater's hobbies, family situation, or career choices, naming your boat could be a daunting task.  To help out with this undertaking, Boat Owners Association of the United States has put together a list of more than 9,000 names, submitted from boaters over the past 20 years.

On Wednesday, BoatUS released their official Top Ten Boat Names for 2016.  They Are:

10  Aqua Holic

9    Blue Moon

8    At Last

7    Liberty

6    No Regrets

5    Island Time

4    Serendipity

3    Grace

2    Freedom

Mississippi River Cruising

American Queen Cruising In It's Fifth Season........

This year marks the fifth season that the American Queen has been cruising the Mississippi River.  Currently, the vessel is operating at a 95% occupancy, and the owners are working diligently to acquire another boat.

Several of next year's cruises have already sold out.  Ted Sykes, president of the American Queen Steamboat Co. says that they have been trying to raise awareness for the cruises, and now they have it.

The American Queen Steamboat Co. is on track to repay a $9 million loan from the City of Memphis up to two years early.  The loan is being paid for through the $89 landing fee assessed to each passenger........

Sterndrive Sales Growth Continues........

During April, boat sales continued to trend upward.  According to the latest Info-Link Bellweather Report, all segments posted sales increases.

Sales of all powerboats were up around 7 percent for the 12 month period, ending inn April.  The PWC and ski boat segment had the strongest growth, with ski boat sales up about 15%, and PWCs increasing just below that.

Boat Manufacturer

Bristol Harbor Boats Acquired By Vanquish........

Wednesday, Vanquish Boats announced that they have acquired Bristol Harbor Boats of Bristol, Rhode Island.  Vanquish has already started constructing a 21 foot outboard Center Console Bristol Harbor, that will be named the 21' Vanquish Bristol Harbor Series CC.

Morgan Huntley, president of Vanquish said that Bristol Harbor was a logical purchase for the company as a sister brand.  He adds that a mixture of a modern underbody with a downeast shear gives the vessels a gorgeous ride, and the traditional New England styling fits well with Vanquish sensibilities.

Vanquish has already begun working on the tooling for the second Bristol Harbor model, the 21' Cuddy, which will be introduced in the 2017 model year.  A third vessel in the series, the 21' Dual Console, is currently in the design stages........

Mississippi River

Click pic to enlarge

Yesteryear's Picture on this Day in 2010 ....... was sent to us by Mary Greenstreet and Bennie Moutray who hail out of Plattin Rock Boat Club, Crystal City, Mo..

On July 23, 2009, our boat, Kravin, (formerly known as Y2Katy) was stocked up, gassed up, and ready to go!

We set off on the adventure of a lifetime, departing Plattin Rock Boat Club, Crystal City, MO (Mile marker 149.9) for the end of the navigable channel on the Mississippi River.

At 12:05 pm on July 29, 2009, 700+ miles later, we made it as far as we could possibly go, just north of Minneapolis.

While we expected something large and exciting to mark the end of the channel, all we found was a small sign warning of the danger of going any further. Attached is a picture of Captain Bennie at our intended destination.

Round trip details:
1441 miles;
652 gallons of gas;
49 hours 58 minutes spent waiting or locking through 58 times;
The experience? PRICELESS!

Enjoy,
Bennie and Mary

Missouri State Highway Patrol

National Safe Boating Week Is Coming Up........

Superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Colonel J. Bret Johnson is advising the public that next week, May 21 - 27 is National Safe Boating Week.  National Safe Boating Week takes place just before Memorial Day weekend, which is considered to be the start of boating season.

As the weather in Missouri turns warmer, boaters will be hitting the water, and the Highway Patrol wants to remind boaters that safety should always be part of their plans.

The Highway Patrol will be offering boat equipment inspections at several locations across Missouri.  Troop B will inspect boat equipment on May 21, from 8 am to 11 am at the Hannibal Marina boat ramp on the Mississippi River.  Troop C will perform the equipment inspections on May 21, from 9 am to 11 am at George Winter Park on the Meramec River, and at St. Louis Yacht Club on the Mississippi River........

Carp Barrier Plan Held Up By Dispute........

A dispute between a key scientist and the University of Minnesota has put a plan for an invasive carp barrier along the Mississippi River near Winona in jeopardy.

Researcher Peter Sorensen has been testing sound and air bubble barriers for several years, and had been planning on requesting funding for the project from the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources.

University administrators refused to submit the proposal.  Sorensen says that he believes that the university officials did not proceed with the project because they were worried about failure........

Boat Gas News

Damage Caused By Ethanol Increasing........

According to the latest survey of Boating Industry readers, the use of ethanol is continuing to be a major cause of engine damage and other repair issues.  This is raising concerns over the increasing use of E15.

It seems that ethanol is playing an even larger role in service issues than only a year ago.  87% of the survey respondents report that their businesses have seen engine damage caused by ethanol.

This is a 73% increase in the same survey from April 2015.  The results may be a boon for business in service departments, but frequent issues could run the risk of driving people out of boating.........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

"The Captains' Return"....  Has Returned....

Back in 2006, a 9,000 pound bronze statue of Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and their faithful dog, Seaman, was installed on the St. Louis riverfront, just south of the Eads Bridge.

Two years ago, the statue, called The Captains' Return, was removed from the riverfront to be restored.  As happened several times, when the Mississippi River levels were up, the statue would be submerged, causing erosion and damage.

Harry Weber, the statue's sculptor, headed up the restoration efforts.  The Captains' Return is back on the riverfront, albeit 200 feet further south, and approximately 17 feet higher than it's former location........

Illinois River Water Quality

Nutrients Flowing From The Illinois River Decreases.........

A new study has revealed that the flow of nitrates from treated wastewater and farmland runoff into the Illinois River, anf contributing to the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico has decreased.

Researchers from the University of Illinois are thinking that the use of a newer more robust variety of corn may make the decrease a long lasting one.

The study reveals that the level of nitrates fell 10% between 2010 and 2014.  Figuring in the data from 2015, which wasn't available when the study was published, the nitrate level had fallen by 15%........

Officials Investigating Fuel Spill In Perry Creek........

At around 7:30 pm Saturday evening, the Sioux City Fire Department responded to the Missouri Riverfront for reports of fuel spilled in the river.

Responders are thinking that the petroleum product was either poured or leaked into the storm sewer inlet in a parking lot that empties into Perry Creek, and eventually the Missouri River.

Officials continue to investigate the spill, and are seeking information from anyone that may have witnessed the incident occur........

River History....

May 17, 1849 in River History

A devastating fire destroyed a significant part of St. Louis and many of the steamboats on the St. Louis riverfront. This was the first fire in United States history in which it is known that a firefighter was killed in the line of duty.

The St. Louis Great Fire of 1849 was started on the evening of May 17, 1849 by a smoldering mattress aboard the steamboat White Cloud.  The fire quickly spread to an adjoining steamboat, the Edward Bates, which burnt free of her moorings located on what is now Laclede's Landing.  She drifted downriver, spreading fire as she went.  In a half an hours time, 23 steamboats were on fire.  The Great Fire would claim 418 buildings along 15 blocks...

Fire captain Thomas Targee sent orders for soldiers to use kegs of gunpowder to blow up buildings in order to create a fire-stop. His idea worked to an extent, but he was killed in one of the explosions.

NMMA:  Cruiser Sales Decline........

During 2015, cruising boat sales decreased by 4% to 3,117 units.  This is mainly due to a drop in sterndrive cruiser sales, which decreased by 12.4% to 917 from 2014.

The sales of cruisers has fallen dramatically since 2004, when approximately 25,000 vessels were sold.

During 2015, offshore fishing boat sales continued to see gains, with total sales of $2.4 billion, an increase of 6.8% from the previous year........

Mississippi River At Rock Island, Illinois

What Is The Purpose Of The Excavator Atop The Floodwall?

People around Rock Island may have noticed an excavator parked atop the Rock Island floodwall, west of the Centennial Bridge, and pondered what it was doing there.

According to Michael J. Kane, PE, City Engineer for Rock Island, local contractors are using the excavators to remove sand dredged from the river channel by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Ronald F. Fournier, chief of corporate communications for the Corps says that the site is used by the Corps for the placement of dredged materials, and it is one of the more active placement point for maintaining the 9 foot navigation channel........

Fishing News From Lone Elk Park

Water Disappearing From Stocked Lake........

Officials in St. Louis County are working to determine why a lake in Lone Elk Park is drying up.  The popular fishing spot is stocked with bass, and is the centerpiece of a park featuring roaming elk and bison.

A few days ago, park employees noticed that the level of the man made lake was falling.  It is thought that up to seven feet of water has disappeared.

Park personnel have done some investigating, however, they are not sure why the lake is draining.  The head of park operations believes that a sinkhole may have opened up under the lake.  They may not know the cause of the problem until the lake is dry........

Mississippi River At Hannibal, Missouri

Proposed Plans For Hannibal's Riverfront Inviting........

During an open house last week, officials in Hannibal revealed two concepts for the redevelopment of the city's riverfront.  According to Parks and Recreation Department Director Andy Dorian, more than a year of discussion and planning went into the proposals, which were outlined by Klingner and Associates engineering firm of Quincy, Illinois.

One of the plans is expected to cost $5.45 million, and the other will run $6.31 million.  Both of the proposals will include two mooring locations for riverboats, bus and vehicle drop-off areas, an interactive fountain, new parking lots, lighting and restrooms.

Nipper Marina remains the difference in the proposals.  In one, the marina would be eliminated, filled in, and converted to green space.  In the other proposal, the marina will remain, however, it will require dredging, dock replacement, the relocation of the entrance to the Mississippi River, and upgrades to the crumbling rock wall........

Champ Clark Bridge Replacement Project Moving Forward........

Over the past month, the efforts to replace the deteriorating Champ Clark Bridge, spanning the Mississippi River at Louisiana, Missouri, have taken two crucial steps forward.

In April, the Federal Highway Administration approved a proposal to construct the new span 50 feet south of the existing span.  Last week, the Missouri Department of Transportation announced that the the bridge project was included in Missouri's latest five-year transportation plan.

This means that Missouri is closer to earmarking the funding for the bridge project.  Illinois, however, has already set aside funding for their share of the project........

Fuel Spilled Into Creek and Missouri River........

Sioux City Fire Rescue has reported that diesel fuel leaked into Perry Creek and the Missouri River.  Around 7:30 pm Saturday, reports were made of a fuel smell.

Officials arriving on the scene confirmed that something had been leaking into Perry Creek from the city's storm water sewer system.  Outlets empting into the creek have been shut down, and absorbent boom placed where the creek flows into the Missouri River.

Officials are not certain how long the fuel has been leaking into the creek, or how much fuel has made it into the Missouri River.  Reportedly, officials have found the source of the leak, however, they did not reveal the source........

Bill,

Compass Cay Marina is one of the prettiest on the planet!
And I've been to quite a few. There's a Riverbills sticker here now. People come here from all over the world to swim with and pet the sharks. At high tide the water is above a section of dock where the Sharks come to be petted. The entire Marina is like a big aquarium with crystal clear water, Sharks, bone fish, grouper, and sting rays. (I may send more info later), but for now need to get back to work cooking up a couple cheeseburgers.

Point Of Departure Weekend At Lewis And Clark Site........

During the Point of Departure Weekend events at the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site, re-enactors help celebrate Lewis and Clark's expedition departing from Wood River Creek in May 14, 1804.

Lewis and Clark led the Corps of Discovery westward up the Missouri River to explore the Louisiana Purchase for U.S. President Jefferson.

According to Historic Site Interpreter Pam Imes, this year's event is one of the few times that the notable date fell on a weekend, and it is one of the few times that the event was not held in the rain.  She added that the Corps of Discovery did depart in the rain........

The Rising River Is Flowing Through Lens Small Levee Again........

The river level gauge at Thebes, Illinois says that the Mississippi River is technically not at flood stage, however, it is flowing over the sand covered areas that were flooded earlier this year.

The water is entering the region of the Len Small Levee, which broke during the historic New Year Flood.  As of Saturday, May 15, the floodwaters had covered a few roads and several sand-covered farm fields.

The river gauge at Thebes was just over 32 feet, just shy of minor flood stage of 33 feet.  Water continues to flow inland due to the gaping hole in the levee........

Students Participate In Lewis And Clark's Education Friday........

On Friday, better than 800 area fourth and fifth grade students were at the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site to participate in the annual Education Day event, which is held the day before the site's Point of Departure weekend.

Pat Imes, the Lewis and Clark site's historic coordinator said that they had 32 stations set up with a variety of artisans demonstrating the activities and skills of the early 1800s.

Students learned about rope making, how to properly fold the American flag, surgical tools and techniques of the time, and toured a replica of the fort that the expedition stayed in prior to heading up the Missouri River........

Levee Work Wrapping Up, Funding Issue Inaccurate.......

While the rehabilitation project on the Metro East Levee system is wrapping up, one of the supervisors of the project is claiming that there has been some inaccuracies in the reporting on the project's financing.

A few television and newspaper accounts reported that the levee project lost over $20 million in federal funding due to a dispute over a labor agreement.

Chuck Etwert, the Chief Supervisor of Construction with the Southwestern Illinois Flood Prevention District says that this is not true, and this project will be complete and certified during 2017........

Senate Bill Bolsters Mississippi Waterways Infrastructure.........

U.S. Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi recently praised the passage of a Senate bill that provides for crucial flood control and waterways infrastructure that the President's budget intended to eliminate.

On Thursday, the Fiscal Year 2017 Energy and Water Development Appropriations Bill was approved by a margin of 90 to 8.  This measure funds U.S. Department of Energy programs and critical infrastructure projects managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Reclamation.

The appropriations bill supplies $368 million in funding for the Corps of Engineers' Mississippi River and Tributaries program.  This amount is nearly $150 million over the budget request........

A christening banquet and ball for the Santa Maria Replica Ship that was moored on the St. Louis Riverfront.

A ceremonial bottle of champagne was dropped into the Mississippi River from the deck of the ship because no one could reach the sharply sloped bow.
The banquet was held at the Mayan Room of the Bel Air East Hotel (now the Hampton Inn at the Arch). Mayor Alfonso J. Cervantes and his wife, Carmen, led everyone in dancing to "Spanish Eyes." All in attendance were named as an named an honorary admiral of the ship.

Alton Water Ski Club River Road Renegades

Looking for a New Ski Site......

Bill,

The Alton Water Ski Club River Road Renegades ski site on the river at the bottom of Clifton Terrace in Godfrey has silted in so bad that it cannot be used to have practice or ski shows now. The club was doing pretty good for a while and the ski shows were attracting a good crowd but flooding and low water conditions have forced us to search for a new ski site. We have put the clubhouse up for sale and hope to raise some funds for a new lake or river ski site that could be used by our members. We have lost members due to river conditions at our site but if we could come up with a new site I think we could build membership back up. If you know of a possible new ski site for the club please send us the info.

Thanks for your awesome website.

He enjoyed spending time with his loved ones at the river house overlooking the Mississippi river and listening to the sounds of purple martins.

Bowfisherman Breaks Own Record....  Sets World Record....

Late last month, another Missouri fish record has been broken, after a bowfisherman shot a large river carpsucker on Smithville Lake.  So far, 11 Missouri fish records have been broken this year.

On April 23, Jonathon Randall broke his own record, set in 2015, and set a world record after shooting the 11 pound, 2 ounce fish.  It was certified by the Bowfishing Association of America.

The river carpsucker measured 25 1/2 inches long, and had a girth of 20 1/2 inches.  The fish was shot in approximately 2 feet of water........

News Release

Drivers, Boaters Encouraged To Have A Safe Memorial Day Weekend!

Memorial Day weekend is the first long weekend of summer. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy visiting family or friends, go to one of Missouri’s lakes, or enjoy any number of recreation opportunities in our state. It is also an opportunity to put safety first. Know where work zones are located along your route, pay attention while you are driving, and buckle up. If alcohol is part of your holiday, make sure driving a vehicle or a vessel is not. If you are planning time on or near the water, make sure you wear a life jacket.
The Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) during the long holiday weekend. This means every available trooper will be on the road enforcing traffic laws and assisting motorists. In addition, the Patrol will assign troopers to 20-mile intervals along Interstates 29, 44, 55, and 70, and U.S. Highways 60 and 61 on May 27, 2016 and May 30, 2016. Troopers taking part in the holiday peak travel crash reduction enforcement project will be alert for all traffic offenses, and be especially vigilant to aggressive driving violations.

Motorists or boaters in need of assistance or who want to report a crime should use the Highway Patrol's Emergency Assistance number 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone. For road condition reports, travelers can visit our web site at www.mshp.dps.mo.gov and click on the Road Condition icon to view road construction areas throughout the state or call 1-888-275-6636.

Over the 2015 Memorial Day holiday weekend, eight people died and 411 were injured in 969 traffic crashes. Last year, 105 persons were arrested for DWI. This year's fatality counting period for the holiday weekend begins at 6 p.m., Friday, May 27, and ends at 11:59 p.m., Monday, May 30, 2016. Troopers will focus their attention on seat belt use, use of child safety seats, impaired drivers, and speed violations.

Motorists are encouraged to be safe and courteous drivers. Speed, inattention, and impaired driving are leading causes of traffic crashes. Please do your part. Obey all traffic laws and buckle up. The only 100 percent survivable traffic crash is the one that never happens. Make sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Every day as we travel on Missouri's roadways, we trust that every driver on the road is going to obey the speed limit, pay attention, and drive sober. "Don't Violate The Trust."

The Memorial Day weekend is also an unofficial start to the boating season. During the 2015 Memorial Day weekend, there were eight boating crashes which included one injury; no one drowned over last year’s holiday weekend. Troopers arrested 15 people for boating while intoxicated. Boating is a great pastime and troopers want everyone to enjoy themselves. Never operate a boat while you are impaired; never ride with an impaired operator. Please be courteous to others on the water, wear a lifejacket, and obey the law regarding safe operation of a vessel and no wake zones. Causing harm to another person or their property with an excessive boat wake may subject you to enforcement action or civil liability. Treat other boaters and property owners as you would want to be treated.

Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others: Share the waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. Wear It!!

“Whether you’re on the highway or on the water, be courteous and pay attention. If alcohol is part of your plan, don’t operate a vehicle or vessel. It truly is that simple. We want all of you to have a safe and enjoyable summer beginning with this holiday weekend,” said Colonel J. Bret Johnson. “Please do your part.”

Boating Safety

Sea Tow Launching Annual Safety Campaign........

The Sea Tow Foundation is encouraging boaters to be safe during this Memorial Day Weekend, through their second annual Designated Skipper Campaign.

According to a 2014 U.S. Coast Guard Recreational Boating Statistics report, alcohol use in the main contributing factor in fatal boating accidents, where the primary cause was known.

The Sea Tow Foundation lists three ways that boaters can remain safe:

○  Designate a sober skipper prior to leaving the dock

○  Know the rules of the water

○  Be sure there are enough life vests, and all passengers know where they are.
