American Boating Congress Opened Monday........

On Monday, the American Boating Congress opened their annual three day event in Washington D.C..  The ABC event will bring together over 250 recreational boating industry stakeholders to lobby on behalf of marine businesses.

The advocates will be discussing issues such as the increasing ethanol blends in gasoline, recreational fishing, public access to waterways, invasive species in waterways, as well as trade.

Something new for this year's ABC is the MRAA's workshop on the workshop shortage in the industry.  A survey reveals that there is a considerable shortage of technicians in the dealer's service departments.........

A RiverBills Sticker Sighting.... was sent to us by Capt'n Greg Sadowski who hails out of Woodland Marina, but has been hanging around the Bahamas a lot of late....

Bill,

I'm still here in the Bahamas at Little Farmer's Cay.

Here's today's bumper sticker sighting. It's on a Cuban refugee boat that landed here with 12 Cubans. Notice the diesel truck engine and flour sack sails.

Setting foot on land in the US, they get to stay, but in the Bahamas they are sent back. If these Cubans would have had all the information on Riverbills.com and a GPS, they would have had a much better chance

The shark pictures were taken in Highborne Cay. Mostly nurses with a few bulls there.

The Future Of The Hawg Pit Is Uncertain........

The Hawg Pit's new proprietor has said that it will be impossible to effectively host music at her bar without the use of city-owned lots.

Adrienne Hayn, the new owner of The Hawg Pit in Grafton, said that the previous owners had used adjacent city-owned lots at no charge.  She added that she is willing to pay the city for their use.

Hayn is interested in relocating the live music from the front of the building to the side as there were some noise complaints made.  A special meeting was called to discuss the use of the adjoining lots, however, the proposal was voted down........

Corps Reduces Missouri River Releases.........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently reduced the amount of water being released from the upstream reservoirs in order to reduce the risk of flooding downstream following recent heavy rains.

The Corps reduced the amount of water being released from the Gavins Point Dam from 14,000 cubic feet per second of water to 21,000 cfs.

Jody Farhat, the Corps' water management chief said that the reduction of the releases will lower the risk of flooding downstream, but not eliminate it........

Man Commutes To Work....  In A Canoe....

While the vast majority of us line the roadways in an attempt to arrive at work on time, there is a man on the Upper Mississippi River that has the entire river to himself, during his commute.

Dr. Alex Schad. a nephrologist at St. Cloud Hospital has been paddling his canoe to work for the past five years.  Schad says that it takes about 10 minutes to paddle to work, and about 20 to paddle home.

He adds that he has been paddling that portion of the river since he was a kid, and that not having to find a place to park, nor use gas is just a side benefit........

Lower Mississippi River Basin

Asian Carp Invading Southern Louisiana Waterways........

Anglers on the waterways of southern Louisiana are saying that it is getting more dangerous to be out on the water, and the reason is Asian carp.

After the carp escaped into the Mississippi River, they have become the target of multi-million dollar efforts to keep them out of the Great Lakes.

Now it seems that the carp problem is expanding to the southern portions of the Mississippi River basin, and studies performed a few years ago indicate that they are reproducing in the Mississippi, Red, Atchafalaya, and Ouachita Rivers........

The Illinois Waterway

Wide Variety of Activities and Landscapes Along The Illinois Waterway........

Back in 1763, Louis Joliet and Father Marquette used the Chicago Portage across the wetlands of Mud Lake, which was a ridge separating the Chicago River, that flowed north to Lake Michigan, from the Des Plaines River, that flowed south to the Illinois River.

These days, the Chicago Ship and Sanitary Canal links the Chicago River and the Des Plaines Rivers, allowing recreational and commercial vessels to use the Illinois River to get from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River.

The 336 mile long Illinois Waterway is a river system featuring 8 locks and dams, and offers travelers a wide variety of landscapes and activities........

Yesteryear's Picture on this Day in  2015...... was sent to us by Capt'n Ken Longar who hails out of the Yacht Club of St. Louis

Bill,

I just spent the afternoon riding up and down the river with my son. It put me in a reminiscent mood. This old photo is of my Dad, my Uncle Pam (Elsworth Black) AKA Blackie and I believe the guy on the left is Harvey Hatfield of Elsberry, MO- a true river rat. Harvey took his living from the river in a little fishing camp just out of Elsberry. My uncle Pam (Blackie) had a cabin just down stream from Hatfield's place that we got to in our old wooden boats with 5 HP or maybe a 7.5 HP outboard. As a little guy I thought it took for ever to get there.

The fish were one nights work with the trot lines. You know the type, free floating three bricks and oil can floats on one end. This photo pre-dates me I believe this was 1938-1940 but don't know for sure. I spent a lot of weekends playing on the bank, or in the river, It is where I learned to fish, swim, run a boat and most of all to love the Mississippi. I owe a lot to guys who worked harder on weekends than they did all week, just for the fun of it. When you think of a River Rat you just think of guys that look like these.

Ken

ERDC Working On Containing Carp........

About thirty years ago, the invasive Asian carp entered the Mississippi River Basin, and are now found in the lower and middle Mississippi River, as well as the Illinois River.

Now, scientists with the U.S. Army Engineering Research and Development Center in Vicksburg, Mississippi are working on containing and removing the carp from the areas that they have congregated.

The ERDC's Aquatic & Wetlands Ecosystems Research and Development Center had developed the electrical barriers in use in the Chicago Area Waterway System.  Now, they are working on another process for containment, controlling the force of the water's current to contain, or force them away from certain areas........

Officials are working to handle several wildlife issues that could possibly delay the demolition of the Old Eggners Ferry Bridge, which spans Kentucky Lake near Benton, Kentucky.

Reportedly, the contractor had been working to keep ospreys from nesting on the old bridge's trusses.  Several eggs were laid directly on the steel trusses without nests.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District Chief Engineer Mike McGregor says that they are also concerned that grey bats may be nesting below the deck of the old span........

A Tennessee man decided to go fishing in a small pond on private property in Cayce, Kentucky, and ended up fishing for his own truck instead of fish.

When the driver of a 2000 Cadillac Escalade got out his truck, he apparently forgot to put it in park, and the truck rolled into the pond, coming to a stop about 35 feet from shore in six feet of water.

It turns out that the fishing trip wasn't a total loss, since there was a fish on the truck's floorboard when it was retrieved from the pond.  Reportedly, the catch and release policy was carried out........

Yesteryear's Picture on this Day in  2008....... was sent in by BajaKelly

Hello Bill,

Just thumbing through some pictures this morning and came across this one taken @ "Condo Beach" behind Two Branch Island late last summer. It really brightened my day with how the river is treating us this year. That would be my 16 year old daughter, Abigail, in the back of the boat obviously wishing she was at the mall instead.

Thanks for the site.

Missouri Department Of Conservation

MDC Will Be Studying 84 Pound Carp........

Recently, the Missouri Department of Conservation caught an invasive carp while conducting paddlefish research on the Mississippi River.  The carp tipped the scales at 84 pounds.

The MDC decided to keep the huge fish so that they may examine it's age, reproductive health, and diet.

This huge specimen demonstrates why the fish native to the Mississippi River are having such issues competing against these large and abundant invasive fishes........

Thousands Of Gallons Of Sewage Released Into The River........

As a new sanitary sewer system in Burlington is being connected, hundreds of thousands of gallons of untreated wastewater will be released into the Mississippi River.

This project involves separating the previously combined sanitary and storm sewers in Burlington.  While the connections of the new system are being made, approximately 700 gallons of untreated wastewater will be released into the Mississippi River each minute.

Vintage Base Ball Coming To Lewis & Clark Site........

On Saturday, May 7, the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site will be hosting a vintage "base ball" game, as it was played 150 years ago.  Visitors are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs to the free event.

The game will be played by the rules from the 1860's.  At that time, the base ball was pitched underhand, and the batter was called a striker.  Balls caught on the first bounce, as well as those on the fly are outs.  The pitcher is only 45 feet from the batter, unlike the modern 60 feet, six inches.

The Lewis and Clark State Historic Site is where the Corps of Discovery spent the winter, prior to launching their historic journey up the Missouri River, en route to the Pacific Ocean.  The site is Site Number One on the National Lewis and Clark Heritage Trail, and it features an Interpretive Center that discusses Illinois' role in the expedition........

Last Friday, Mississippi River Lock and Dam No.4 at Alma, Wisconsin was open to the public as part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Paul District's  150th anniversary celebration.

According to Patrick Moes, the deputy chief of public affairs for the St. Paul District, it isn't often that Lock and Dam No.4 is open to the public, mainly due to safety concerns and logistics.

Lock and Dam No.4 is unique, in that Pool 4, the section of the river upstream of the dam, is the largest along the Upper Mississippi River, at 44 river miles........

Mississippi River At St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis Underrated As A Logistics Hub........

The St. Louis Metro Region is the northernmost point on the Mississippi River barges can travel before encountering locks and dams.  The area also features two international cargo airports, four interstates, and six Class 1 railroads.

Mary Lamie, executive director of the St. Louis Regional Freightway, which officially launched Wednesday, says that a better job must be done in letting people know what the Metro region has to offer.

The purpose of the St. Louis Regional Freightway is to coordinate projects and planning for the area's freight and shipping infrastructure, expand the industrial business on both sides of the river, and create public-private partnerships........

Woman Found Dead In River Abandoned Child On NY Subway........

At around 2 pm Wednesday, St, Louis firefighters pulled the body of 22 year old Frankea Dabbs of Opa-locka, Fl. from the Mississippi River, south of Arsenal Street.

Police have called Dabbs' death suspicious.  Medical examiner Dr. Michael Graham said that the cause of her death had not been determined, but she was identified by fingerprints.

In July 2014, Dabbs was arrested and charged after surveillance video showed her abandoning her daughter on a subway platform.  Her relatives are unaware of any connection Dabbs had with the St. Louis region........

River History....

May 3, 2013 in River History

Approximately 300 gallons of crude oil spilled into the Mississippi River near Alton, Il when a vessel struck a fleeting area, causing fourteen barges to break free. The run-away barges hit dry docks, numerous other facilities and then another barge causing the oil spill.

Missouri State Highway Patrol

May 21-27 Is National Safe Boating Week

Colonel J. Bret Johnson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, would like to make the public aware of National Safe Boating Week, which takes place May 21-27, 2016. As Missouriís weather warms, water enthusiasts will converge on the stateís many beautiful waterways. Safety should always be included in those plans to insure a wonderful day on the water is not interrupted by an unfortunate accident, injury, or something worse.

The National Safe Boating Week occurs just prior to Memorial Day weekend, which many people consider the kickoff to the boating season. A thorough inspection of your boat is recommended prior to taking it out on the water. Weather, time, and other elements may affect the readiness of your boat. The Patrolís marine operations troopers are available to inspect the required equipment on your boat and, at your request, to make sure youíre in compliance with state law.

Boat equipment inspection stations currently scheduled are as follows:

In the St. Louis / Hannibal area:

TROOP B -- From 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2016, Ray Behrens boat ramp; from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2016, Hannibal Marina boat ramp on the Mississippi River.

TROOP C -- From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2016, George Winter Park on the Meramec River and St. Louis Yacht Club on the Mississippi River.

Officials Look At New Bridge Possibilities........

On Monday, as the Quincy aldermen said goodbye to fiscal year 2015 - 16, and hello to fiscal 2016 - 17, they took an unofficial look at possible alignments for a future replacement for the Quincy Memorial Bridge.

The Quincy City Council convened for two routing meetings, but before and after, aldermen were able to check out a large map with possible configurations for a new east bound bridge spanning the Mississippi River.

Chuck Bevelheimer, the director of the Department of Planning and Development discussed the three preferred bridge routes, which were determined during a meeting hosted by the Illinois Department of Transportation........

Mike and Rosie's Swing Set Blog

We Needed a Holly-Day

We've been really busy since the last blog post, but our focus has been more on our new digs than on Swing Set. We did have a couple of issues and I'll share them here for whoever it may apply to.
The first thing was that even here in sunny Florida, pollen season manifests itself by way of a film of green "dirt" that builds up on the boat surface almost daily, making each visit to the boat a minor chore because we can't stand a dirty boat. The other boat owners in our marina who aren't bothered by filth, over time, will have a harder job of getting their boats clean because with the buildup of pollen comes mold that seems to attach to the gelcoat as a permanent fixture, requiring an acid to take it off. We wax too much and don't use acid unless absolutely necessary. But pollen season it over. When we visited Swing Set yesterday, it was as clean as it was when we left last Sunday. Happy.
Another thing that had us stumped was that the sea gulls, and other birds of this region, like our swim platform, but they don't like it enough to refrain from crapping on it. I don't know what these birds eat, but their droppings are like concrete. Maybe that's what is in Super Glue. At any rate, the stuff is so hard to get off, hull cleaner hardly fazes it. I resorted to using Soft Scrub with bleach, and a green pad to remove it every time we came to the boat. I needed a solution, (a legal one), but one that didn't require placing netting over the stern every time we left. What's interesting is that the bow and the upper areas of Swing Set aren't as attractive to the avian life around our marina. I owe some of that to the wind generators on the radar arch, but those are an expensive deterrent.
Now, when I say a "legal" method to discourage the birds in their desire to nest on the swim platform, I will admit that I considered getting a "soft pellet" pistol to ride herd over the feathered miscreants, and even browsed through a local Bass Pro Shop looking at "firearms", until Rosie sweetly reminded me of the water blaster I bought from Amazon while we were in Marathon, that had only been used one time to thwart the pelicans from a similar dastardly deed, and now sits in the bottom of one of the lockers on the flybridge. The seals are probably too dry to make the water cannon useful at this point. As usual, Rosie's reminder that I have a knack for "over engineering" some of my solutions made me give up using an offensive approach to a sea gull deterrent. I wanted a passive approach, one that required as little energy on our part as we could get by with.
We were back in Missouri recently, and a visit with a good friend, one who spends lots of time in the country, came with the answer to our problem. Rubber snakes!

For better than 50 years, the ferry City of Baton Rouge took passengers across the Mississippi River from Port Allen, Louisiana and back.  Once Interstate 10 opened however, she became obsolete.

Since 1987, the City of Baton Rouge has been in LeClaire, Iowa, without her engines or paddlewheel, serving as a dock boat for the Twilight riverboat on the Mississippi River.

This year, the City of Baton Rouge will be celebrating her 100th birthday, and her owners will be honoring the former ferry boat with tours, speeches, a rechristening, and a plaque detailing her history........

Hi Bill,

I got lucky and got this shot!! It only lasted a minute or so.... but it just so happened that a john boat floated up, almost to our shore during the pouring rain / storm. When the rain slowed Mary Beth and I walked out to the ramp to see if we could pull the boat ashore and all of a sudden a rainbow was literally coming out of the river!!! Had we not tried to save the boat, we would have never seen such a sight. It was so beautiful I was kinda shaking!!! It was right in front of Grafton Ferry ramp. We couldn't get the boat, but sure saw something quite special. Always finding beauty on the Mississippi!

Authentic Steamboat Getting A Makeover........

The authentic steamboat Julia Belle Swain, formerly based out of LeClaire, Iowa, is in La Crosse, Wisconsin, where extensive renovations have been performed.

The vessel was constructed at the Dubuque Boat and Boiler Co. in 1971, and her engines came from the City of Baton Rouge ferry, which was built in 1916.

The Julia Belle Swain was in dry dock for seven years prior to getting her hull repaired in Dubuque.  The 100 year old engines were in good condition, so they will be retained to drive the stern wheel.  She will be outfitted with a new steam boiler, and diesel generators........

Outboard Engine Sales Increase With Pontoon, Saltwater Fishing Boat Sales........

As the economic recovery continues, the pontoon boat segment was the first to recuperate, focusing on performance oriented boats that can be equipped with greater horsepower.  The growth in pontoon sales corresponded to an increase in outboard engine sales.

The large saltwater fishing boat market has rebounded as well, with significant double digit increases in sales each year.  There was also a corresponding spike in outboard engine sales as well.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association reports that the wholesale and retail sales of outboard engines showed impressive year-over-year growth through the end of 2015........
