Hi Bill,

I got lucky and got this shot!! It only lasted a minute or so.... but it just so happened that a john boat floated up, almost to our shore during the pouring rain / storm. When the rain slowed Mary Beth and I walked out to the ramp to see if we could pull the boat ashore and all of a sudden a rainbow was literally coming out of the river!!! Had we not tried to save the boat, we would have never seen such a sight. It was so beautiful I was kinda shaking!!! It was right in front of Grafton Ferry ramp. We couldn't get the boat, but sure saw something quite special. Always finding beauty on the Mississippi!

See you on the River!!

PS: I haven't been able to send in pics lately for my camera is kinda foggy, and a pic must be worthy to forward to you!  But this was too cool to pass up

Heya Bill,

Saw this strange sight going up river this morning (Friday). My guess is they're dam gates, but who knows.
I've been getting out in kayak quite a few times this month, water is still a bit cool.

Public Hearing For Champ Clark Bridge Coming Up........

A public hearing has been tentatively been scheduled for June to discuss the location of a new Champ Clark Bridge at Louisiana, Missouri.

A date has yet to be determined, however, the hearing will happen after May 11, when the state will announce if funding is available for the project as part of their five-year construction plan.

The $60 million replacement for the 88 year old Champ Clark Bridge will be built just south of the current span.  The environmental studies have been completed, and have been approved by the Federal Highway Administration........

Mississippi River At La Crosse Wisconsin

Authentic Steamboat Getting A Makeover........

The authentic steamboat Julia Belle Swain, formerly based out of LeClaire, Iowa, is in La Crosse, Wisconsin, where extensive renovations have been performed.

The vessel was constructed at the Dubuque Boat and Boiler Co. in 1971, and her engines came from the City of Baton Rouge ferry, which was built in 1916.

The Julia Belle Swain was in dry dock for seven years prior to getting her hull repaired in Dubuque.  The 100 year old engines were in good condition, so they will be retained to drive the stern wheel.  She will be outfitted with a new steam boiler, and diesel generators........

Boat & Engine Sales

Outboard Engine Sales Increase With Pontoon, Saltwater Fishing Boat Sales........

As the economic recovery continues, the pontoon boat segment was the first to recuperate, focusing on performance oriented boats that can be equipped with greater horsepower.  The growth in pontoon sales corresponded to an increase in outboard engine sales.

The large saltwater fishing boat market has rebounded as well, with significant double digit increases in sales each year.  There was also a corresponding spike in outboard engine sales as well.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association reports that the wholesale and retail sales of outboard engines showed impressive year-over-year growth through the end of 2015........

Water Safety

How To Avoid Electric Shock Drowning........

Diving into the water is a normal, harmless enough event, until you are unexpectedly shocked when you enter the water.  This is called electric shock drowning, and can happen much more often that one might think.

Electric shock drowning occurs when faulty electrical wiring allows lethal amounts of electricity to enter the water undetected.  Swimmers are often paralyzed or killed instantly in water near docks or boats.

The phenomenon can be prevented with the installation of ground fault interrupters, which will cause the circuit to automatically turn off if too much current is flowing through........

Missouri River Near Malta Bend, Missouri

Group Finds Sunken Steamboat In Rural Missouri........

A group of excavators recently found the 175 year old sunken steamboat, Malta, the namesake of the rural city of Malta Bend.  A white outline, measuring 140 feet long, and 22 feet wide, marks the steamboat's final resting place.

David Hawley, leader of the group of excavators, has been searching for the wrecks of steamboats along the Missouri River for 30 years.  He has found 11 vessels, and excavated two.

The Malta sank in the Missouri River in 1841, as she was heading for Council Bluffs, Iowa.  Hawley said that earth samples reveal black and red wool and window glass.  He adds that more samples are needed to accurately determine what was aboard........

Another St. Louis area angler catches a state-record skipjack herring

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reports that Steve Wengler of St. Louis became the most recent record-breaking angler in Missouri when he hooked a skipjack herring on the Mississippi River using a rod and reel.

The new “pole and line” record skipjack herring caught by Wengler on April 17 weighed 2-pounds, 5-ounces. It broke the previous state-record of 1-pound, 14-ounces. Wengler was using two 1/8-ounce white and chartreuse jigs to catch the skipjack herring. MDC staff verified the record-weight fish using a certified scale in Defiance.

This week, two Illinois congressmen paid a visit to the Melvin Price Lock and Dam.  Mike Bost and Rodney Davis also met with local leaders and stakeholders at America's Central Port so they could discuss issues facing the nation's waterways.

The congressmen are working to get a reauthorization of the Water Resources Development Act.  Davis said that the Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment has begun the reauthorization process with hearings in which they will review Corps' projects and reports.

Back in 2014, Davis served on the Conference Committee for the last Water Resources Development Act reauthorization.  He worked to include language that created a pilot program allowing the Corps to identify 15 water resources development projects eligible for financing via public-private partnerships........

Mississippi River At Cape Girardeau, Missouri

Riverwalk Trail Extension Nearing Completion........

Wednesday morning, crews installed a 100 foot long, 38,000 pound weathered steel pedestrian bridge over Sloan Creek, linking Cape Girardeau's riverwalk with the Red Star Access.

This project has been delayed by heavy rains and unpredictable river levels throughout 2015.  Crews had to contend with high and low river stages, and then the big winter floods.

On Friday, concrete will be poured on the span, an allowed to cure over the weekend.   This reinforcement will allow the bridge to support vehicles weighing up to 10,000 pounds........

This is the best reason to be on the camera side of the Boathouse. There are our some nice Bass in the rocks and wood if the current is not to high. I work down the bank with a jig try to hit every little current break.
I love the fact that I can go to Your web sit and see the river even if like today I can't get out there. Thank you for posting it. In fact thank you for the web site.

News Release From BoatUS

Buying Boat Insurance: The Fine Print

Check Your Policy for These Six Coverages

ALEXANDRIA, Va., April 27, 2016 – As boat owners prep for the season, it’s time to dust off the insurance policy and grab a magnifying glass to read the fine print. Unlike auto or homeowner’s insurance, recreational boat insurance has distinct coverages that can perplex and leave boaters scratching their head. What do you need to know? Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) takes a look at the fine print on six of the most important coverages.

The consequential damage fine print: Half of all sinkings occur at the dock when some small part below the waterline fails. However, these parts – an outdrive bellows, for example – most often fail due to “wear, tear, and corrosion” or a lack of maintenance, so the policy won’t pay for a new outdrive bellows. But here’s the rub: as a consequence of the failed bellows, your boat is now sunk and likely a total loss. Who pays for that? That’s why you need “consequential damage” coverage that pays for losses that often start with a failed part that may be excluded under the policy. The small inexpensive part that failed may not be covered but most importantly the rest of the repairs or total loss will be. One caveat: this consequential damage coverage often applies only to specific types of losses. For example, the immediate consequential damage resulting from any fire, explosion, sinking, demasting, collision or stranding..

Boat Sales

NMMA:  Boat Exports Decrease........

During 2015, the marine industry saw their lowest export year during 2015, but saw and increase in import sales for the fifth consecutive year.

Thanks to the strong U.S. dollar, there was a spike in imports of recreational boats and marine engines during 2015.  There was a 28% increase in value, mostly driven by big inboard cruisers, personal watercraft, and sterndrive vessels.

Data released by the National Marine Manufacturers Association reveals that during 2015, exports decreased 18.5%, as the U.S. dollar reached a 14 year high........

Boat Manufacturer

1Q Results Released By Marine Products Corp........

On Wednesday, Marine Products Corp., parent company of Chaparral and Robalo announced that during the first quarter of 2016, they posted a 25.7% increase in net sales.

This increase was due in part to a 36.7% increase in unit sales, which the company is crediting to the popularity of their smaller models.

The company reports that during the first quarter, which ended on March 31, the company reported close to $36.7 million in sales, compared to just over $50.6 million during the first quarter of 2015........

Mississippi River At Alton, Illinois

Officials Tour Mel Price Lock And Dam........

The Melvin Price Locks and Dam No.26 at Alton allows transport barges to move millions of tons of freight, worth millions of dollars, by controlling the flow of the Mississippi River.

The lock and dam accomplishes all of this while operating on a shoestring budget, meaning that there is insufficient funding for infrastructure and maintenance.  Lou Dell'Orco, chief of operations for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District says that the lack of funding leads to emergency closures, and short term fixes.

Tuesday morning, Dell'Orco hosted Colonel Anthony Mitchell, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Representative Rodney Davis, R - Taylorville; and U.S. Representative Mike Bost, R - Murphysboro at the lock and dam.  Bost and Davis are members of the House committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, and were getting input on the dam needs prior to the reauthorization of the Water Resources Development Act........

Feds Intend To Spend Millions On Asian Carp Fight........

Federal agencies have announced that they intend to spend over $57 million on efforts to prevent Asian Carp from reaching the Great Lakes.

Asian carp have been steadily making their way toward the Great Lakes via Illinois' waterways.  If they reach the Great Lakes, the carp could damage the ecology, and harm native fish.

Work will focus on three locks and dams, as well as the electronic barrier installed in the Chicago Ship and Sanitary Canal........

Hi Bill,

Here are some pictures of Shirley's birthday party, held at Woodland Harbor. A fun party for Shirley of "LoveBoo", given by her son Kevin and her dock buddies. Couldn't have asked for better weather.

Shirley and her family have boated on the Mississippi for many years, and wish her many more years to enjoy her favorite pastime.

New State Record River Redhorse Caught........

About two weeks ago, a man from Jefferson City set a new state record, and possibly set a world record, after he reeled in a river redhorse on Tavern Creek.

On April 15, Dan Schmitz caught the river redhorse on a rod and reel.  Schmitz says that it took about ten minutes to land the fish.  It weighed in at 9 pounds, 13 ounces.

This fish broke the prior state "pole and line" record of 9 pounds, 10 ounces, which was set in 2006 from the Osage River.  Schmitz's fish also eclipses the current world record of 9 pounds, 8 ounces, set in 2014 on Michigan's Muskegon River........

Kaskaskia River Near Evansville, Illinois

Man Catches 60 Pound Catfish........

On Friday night, Sam Grillo of Evansville was fishing in the Kaskaskia River, when he reeled in a 60 pound blue catfish.  He says that he caught the cat using a 6 inch live bluegill.

Grillo said that he was fishing for about a half hour, when he noticed that his rod was bent over, nearly to the water line.  He had to wade out into the river and fight for about ten minutes before landing the catfish.

While the Illinois record for blue catfish is over 124 pounds, Grillo says that he is interested in going for the flathead record, which is 78 pounds........

Lighthouse Park Cleanup

Bill

On Saturday about 20 people who are friends residents and frequent visitors to Grafton showed up with work tools, plants rakes and lots more to clean up our lighthouse park. It was a beautiful day of camaraderie and hope for the town to be ready for lots of visitors this spring and summer.

Thanks goes out to all who supported this effort and love our town! A little hard work is all it takes to make this kind of stuff happen!

A special thanks to Jamie Clayton and Grafton United and all those who donated plants and labor and those organizing this all.

Stay tuned for pictures when it all blooms and grows!

National Park Service

More National Parks Need To Be Open To Boating........

This year, the National Park Service is celebrating it's 100th birthday, and is inviting the public to join in on their centennial celebration.  President Obama has declared that this week is National Park Week, and admission fees will be waived.

Of the 409 parks in the park system, only 16%, or 66 parks, have any boating activity, and where there is boating, there are some issues, including lack of facilities, lack of access points, poor ramps and docks, and deteriorating restrooms and infrastructure.

A month ago, president of the National Marine Manufacturers Association, Thom Dammrich joined in on an American Recreation Coalition meeting to come up with ideas for modernizing federal lakes, and meeting public demand and expectations........

Boat Catches Fire After Refueling........

Sunday, an older model Ozark was destroyed after catching fire shortly after refueling in the Alton Marina.

Alton Fire Chief Bernie Sebold reports that the vessel began experiencing engine trouble after topping off the fuel.  The engine started to misfire, and after the pilot pulled the clutch, an explosion blew off the engine cover, engulfing the engine area in flames.

Sebold says that there were no injuries reported to him.  He added that the vessel was a total loss, however, his crew was able to keep fuel, oil, and other engine fluids contained to the immediate area........

Grafton Riverside Flea Market Was This Weekend........

Over the weekend, some 60 vendors had set up shop at The Loading Dock in Grafton for the Riverside Flea Market.  The event is held on the fourth weekend of every month from April through October.

Event organizer Trudi Allen says that the weather seemed to help bring in the crowd of shoppers.  She adds that the good weather helps, however, the event is busy even if it is rainy.

Allen also said that the Riverside Flea Market always has the same number of vendors, and there is even a waiting list.  Reportedly, business increases by about 20% around Grafton during the flea market weekends, so they are beneficial to the whole town........

Slow Down !

Imagine this is not a good time to post this.
We are having a problem with people speeding in the harbor, and coming in to the harbor at a high speed. You are washing the banks back into the water. Pretty soon the entrance will be closed off. We are assessing the rampers first. IF they continue to be a problem, they will have to look elsewhere for a boat ramp.
Of course everyone is a little crazy getting on the water for the first time, but slow down, or ship out.

Mississippi River At Louisiana, Missouri

May 11 Announcement Might Reveal Champ Clark Bridge Funding........

On May 11, residents of Louisiana, Missouri should find out if Missouri has the funding to replace the aging Champ Clark Bridge in the near future.

May 11 is the day that Missouri will be unveiling their updated five-year construction program, which will cover 2017 through 2021.  No one has said if the Champ Clark project is on the list, however, it remains a priority.

The Champ Clark project is already further along than just about any other project, as the initial pre-construction work has already been completed........

Metro East Levees

Local Tax Dollars Funding Costly Levee Projects........

Of the hundreds of millions of dollars being spent on making improvements to the Metro East levee system, the use of local labor and the aggressive timetable for the project has placed the majority of the project's cost on the shoulders of the local taxpayers.

The federal government declared that the levees protecting the American Bottom would be deaccredited if work bring the levee system up to a 100 year flood standard, and other deficiencies were not completed.

Over $18 million in federal funds were not used for the projects.  Instead, officials used funds generated by a one-quarter cent sales tax in Madison, St. Clair, and Monroe Counties, and the issuance of bonds to pay for the levee improvements.........

A Look At At America's First Steam Powered Amphibious Digger........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, North Atlantic Division recently released a picture of Oliver Evans' amphibious digger, which he built for the Philadelphia Board of Health in 1804.

The digger was likely the first wheeled vehicle that could move under it's own power in America, and was the first mechanically powered dredger operated along the Delaware River.

The amphibious digger was a flat-bottomed scow, equipped with bucket chains to bring up mud, and hooks to move stones, sticks, and other obstacles.  The vessel was powered by a high pressure Evans steam engine........

Engine Compartment Fire Damages Boat........

Recently, quick action by a boater on the Lake of the Ozarks likely made sure that a bad situation did not end up being much worse.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that on Saturday, April 16, the engine compartment caught fire of 52 year old James Hevel's 2002 Envision, which he was running eastbound on the Lake of the Ozarks near Mile Marker 13.

Hevel was able to extinguish the fire, and no injuries were reported.  The Envision sustained heavy damage, and was towed to shore........

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in 2008.......... was from Cheryl and Dan Rauschkolb, who hailed out of Grafton Harbor in the cruiser "Never Satisfied".

HI Bill,

A group of us from Grafton Harbor took advantage of Sunday's warm weather. We thought a dip in the hot tub would be a treat but with it still sitting in the parking lot we had to make do with what we had. We are supposed to have both the hot tub and pool installed by Memorial Day and were looking forward to it. All in all, Sunday was a real treat for us boat huggers.

Levee Repairs Halted As Aid Appeal Denied........

Recently, Alexander County in Illinois was denied federal funds after millions of dollars of property were damaged by the flooding Mississippi River earlier this year.

Residents have also learned that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has suspended work on the Len Small Levee, until October.  Alexander County EMA Coordinator Mike Turner says that the Corps believes that the work was not an emergency.

Many Alexander County residents are feeling hopeless after receiving two doses of bad news.  Resident Heather Miller says that the levee work being put off could cause more problems for the region........

FEMA Rejects Illinois' Appeal For Disaster Aid........

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has rejected Illinois' appeal for federal aid to assist local governments recover from heavy storms and flooding in December and January.

According to James Joseph with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, states with large populations concentrated in urban areas fight to meet thresholds set by the federal government.

Joseph added that the aid process is unfair, and causes the state's poorest areas to suffer.  Last month, Illinois' request for FEMA funds or residents and businesses was declined........

Fishy Tales From Los Angeles, California

Video:  Great White Takes Bite Out Of Kayaker's Catch........

Wednesday afternoon, Bill Morales was fishing in a kayak off the coast of Los Angeles, when he caught a video of a great white shark as it came up and took a bite out of his catch.

Morales had just reeled in a small leopard shark when he was suddenly jerked backwards.  He soon found himself in a tug-of-war with a great white shark, and yet managed to grab his camera to shoot some video.

He says that he had the camera in one hand, and a shark in the other.  Morales quipped that he had to move his arm like a piston so he wouldn't be pulled over........

Keith Wagner Drowns

Harbor Point Yacht Club

Bill,

I don't know if anybody has informed you of the tragic drowning death of Keith Wagner ..... divers recovered Kieth's body at a little after noon on Thursday. He apparently fell in the water while boarding his boat late Tuesday night.

Kieth was a liveaboard at Harbor Point Yacht Club. He was very well known on the river and was in the sign business .... he did several boat names on the river.

River History....

April 22, 2010 in River History

At Dam 25 near Winfield, a large steel dam gate some 100-feet long, failed when the chain mechanism that raises and lowers it broke at its connection point. The failure was attributed to a faulty mechanical-electric limit switch. It occurred while lock maintenance personnel were lubricating the dam’s gate chains.

Courtesy Boat Inspections ...Longview, Smithville, & Truman Lakes

Captain Scott A. Shipers, commanding officer of Troop A, Lee’s Summit, announces that Troop A marine operations troopers will conduct courtesy boat inspections on Longview, Smithville, and Truman Lakes as a part of National Safe Boating Week. National Safe Boating Week will take place from May 21, 2016 through May 27, 2016, to promote safe boat operation during the kick-off to the upcoming boating season.

On Saturday, May 21, 2016, officers will conduct courtesy boat inspections from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Longview Lake Boat Ramp, the Smithville Lake West Boat Ramp, and the Shawnee Bend Boat Ramp at Truman Lake. The goal of the boat inspection stations is to verify boaters have the required equipment on board their boat, provide a Patrol boat inspection sticker if the boater is in compliance, and to answer boating questions. There is no cost for those participating.

“A thorough inspection of your boat is recommended prior to taking it out on the water,” stated Captain Shipers. “Weather, time, and other elements may affect the readiness of your boat. These boat inspections are a great opportunity to insure you will be safe while enjoying the many lakes and rivers in our area.”

Alton also intends to hold their fireworks display along the riverfront on July 3rd.  Saint Anthony's Health Center has donated $5,000 to go towards the cost of the event.  The city will use Tourism Fund money to cover the remainder of the costs........

Nautical Oddities From Guilford, Connecticut

Sea Tow Recovers Last Hurricane Sandy Tossed Boat........

Last month, Sea Tow Central Connecticut removed an abandoned 34 foot Sea Ray from a sensitive spot in a land trust/preserve in Guilford, Connecticut.  The vessel had been stranded on land for 3 1/2 years by Hurricane Sandy.

Ever since the October 2012 storm hit, Sea Tow Central Connecticut, and other salvage operators had removed all of the vessels stranded by the storm, with the exception of the Sea Ray, because it was in an environmentally sensitive area.

The Sea Ray had been stored on land at Brown's Boatyard when Superstorm Sandy washed it away.  The vessel ended up about a mile from the boatyard, had no insurance, nor anyone to take responsibility for it........
