Barge Traffic On The Missouri River Set For A Comeback........

There is new life along the Missouri River this spring, and it isn't just the fish in the water.  It looks like barge traffic on the Missouri River is poised for a renaissance.

Last year, the Port of Kansas City reopened the Woodswether terminal.  The facility is the only public port in operation on the Missouri River, and is receiving barges for the first time since 2007.

This may be a promising development for the barge operators, however, utilizing the Missouri River for transportation has not always been feasible, usually due to droughts and flooding........

Wabash River Near Mount Carmel, Illinois

Fuel Sheen Spotted On  River........

On Sunday, a fuel sheen was spotted on the Wabash River, near Mount Carmel.  The sheen quickly spread to the Ohio River.  An official with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that the sheen has not affected wildlife.

The Wabash River is near flood stage, and the sheer volume of water is helping the sheen to dissipate.  Kevin Turner, on-scene coordinator for the EPA says that the sheen should be undetectable by the time it reaches the Mississippi River.

Turner says that the speed of the water kept the sheen from settling in backwaters, where it could have harmed wildlife.  Marathon Pipe Line LLC has shut down their Two Rivers pipeline system while the investigate whether the fuel is from their network........

Missouri State Highway Patrol

News Release

Courtesy Boat Inspections To Be Conducted On Mark Twain Lake And Mississippi River

Captain James E. Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, announces that Troop B marine operations troopers will conduct courtesy boat inspections on Mark Twain Lake and the Mississippi River as a part of National Safe Boating Week. National Safe Boating Week will take place from May 21, 2016 through May 27, 2016, to promote safe boat operation during the kick-off to the upcoming boating season.

On Saturday, May 21, 2016, officers will conduct courtesy boat inspections at the Ray Behrens Boat Ramp from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. On the same day, officers will conduct inspections at the Hannibal Marina Boat Ramp on the Mississippi River from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The goal of the boat inspection stations is to verify boaters have the required equipment on board their boat, provide a Patrol boat inspection sticker if the boater is in compliance, and to answer boating questions. There is no cost for those participating.

“The boating season is upon us and the Patrol is dedicated to promoting safety on our waterways,” stated Captain Wilt. “The upcoming boat inspections are a great way to insure you will be safe while enjoying the many lakes and rivers in our area.”

Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are NOT at the time of the traffic crash. The Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Join us in supporting the Drive To Zero Highway Deaths. Watercraft operators should ensure that everyone in the vessel is wearing an approved life jacket. Click It 4 Life And Wear It!!

News Release From BoatUS

Boat Fire Extinguishers: Four Myths From the BoatUS Foundation

ANNAPOLIS, MD, April 19, 2016 – Every spring, the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water receives questions from boaters about fire extinguishers. To help set the record straight here are four fire extinguisher myths debunked:

Myth #1: Tapping or striking the extinguisher keeps the contents “fresh”.
Reality: Leave the mallet at home. Unlike days of old, today’s modern fire extinguishers don’t use chemicals that cake, get hard, or need to be broken up. Whacking it with a mallet or hammer could compromise the extinguisher’s ability to put out a fire.

Myth #2: All extinguishers must be mounted with a bracket.
Reality: Mounting a fire extinguisher on a bracket keeps the unit in a handy place and may protect it from being banged around the boat, but it is not a legal requirement. You do, however, need to ensure the extinguisher is readily accessible, so leaving it at the bottom of locker or compartment is a big no-no.

Myth #3: Fire extinguishers get old and go “bad” every year.
Reality: Unlike flares, fire extinguishers have no expiration date. To meet US Coast Guard carriage requirements however, the extinguisher must be Coast Guard approved and in “good and serviceable” condition. The charge indicator needs to be in the green zone, the nozzle free of obstruction and the cylinder not rusted.

Myth #4: The law says you only need to carry one extinguisher.
Reality: US Coast Guard minimum equipment requirements dictate that larger vessels require more than one fire extinguisher. While a full list of all minimum safety gear requirements for all boat sizes can be found at BoatUS.org/equipment, don’t let that stop you from adding additional extinguishers. Having back-ups may help save your boat and won’t break your budget.

For more on fire extinguishers, go to BoatUS.org/fire-extinguisher

MarineMax Purchases Russo Marine........

Recently, MarineMax acquired Boston-based Russo Marine, who was New England's biggest privately owned dealer.  Russo Marine operated out of four service and sales facilities in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Larry Russo Sr. said that after 75 years, and three generations, they realized that it would be difficult for them to take their business to the next level on their own.  He added that MarineMax offers the resources to keep the business growing.

Russo family members will stay aboard to run the operations.  Russo says that they are fully committed to bringing more opportunities to the New England region with MarineMax........

The Queen Has Yet To Be Repaired........

A year after being towed from downtown Chattanooga, and anchored in Houma, Louisiana, there have been no repair work completed on the historic Delta Queen steamboat.

Southwest Pass at Mouth of Mississippi River

Shippers:  Sediment Costing Them Millions........

This year, the high levels along the lower Mississippi River have deposited enough sediment in the Southwest Pass to cause issues with shipping, costing operators millions of dollars.

The navigable depth of the Southwest Pass has fallen to 42 feet.  The channel is authorized to be 45 feet deep, but is usually at least 47 feet deep.

Officials report that vessels entering or leaving the Southwest Pass must carry less cargo to make it through the shallower areas.  Back in January, a shoaling issue caused a similar problem........

Renaissance May Be Coming For Missouri River Shipping........

Last year, the Port KC reopened the Woodswether terminal in the West Bottoms, which is currently the only public port on the operating along the Missouri River.  The barges it received were the first to arrive at Port KC since 2007.

Richard Grenville, the port operations manager for Port KC says that their main mission is to make sure that people don't forget about using the Missouri River for shipping.

Grenville added that with the depth issues the Missouri River had during the late 1990s and early 2000s, many people thought that shipping along the Missouri River was completely finished........

Outboard Engines

Pure Electric Outboard Introduced

Pure Watercraft announced that it's electric outboard motor can now be pre-ordered. The electric outboard engine has been built from the ground up over the past four years without borrowing pieces from gas-powered outboards and it is designed for more than 20,000 hours of life.

The company put a lot of effort into making the engine quite. Everything from the gear set to the pumps was reviewed.  They also wanted to ensure a level of efficiency and long life, as well as offering a zero-maintenance product.

The motor can replace up to a 40 hp gas motor and can also be used as a trolling motor.

Life Jackets

3,400 people drown every year in the United States. Drowning is the second highest cause of accidental deaths for people in the 1-14 year old bracket. It is the sixth leading cause for people of all ages.

One of the simplest things people can do to be more prepared in the event of an accident is to wear your life jacket —don’t just carry one on board.

According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers 84 percent of all public water-related fatalities involved people that are  not wearing life jackets.

News Release From BoatUS

BoatUS Staff Speak Up So You Don't Make the Same Blunders

The dinghy goof-up: “Sailors need to remember to check their dinghy – it’s often overlooked and winter might have been hard on it with missing pieces, critters inside, etc. Don’t forget to service the dinghy’s motor too. If you don’t, you’re going to be sorry just like I was when it sputtered just as I left the boat.” – Charles in BoatUS Consumer Affairs and Seaworthy Magazine

The transom drain plug goof-up: “If you have a trailerable boat with a transom drain plug, take the plug now and attach it to the boat’s throttle control or steering wheel so it will be impossible for you not to notice to install it before launching. Yes, this does happen. I know. Nothing gets your attention more than a little water around your ankles.” – Chris in BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water

The bottom paint goof-up: “When putting on my bottom paint I used a cheap paint roller and soon found out why it was so cheap – it was shedding a fuzz in every pass I made. I also made the mistake of not saving a little extra paint to finish under the jackstands or trailer rollers just before launching.“ – Ted in BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water

The rushing to get it done goof-up: “Every spring, boat sinking claims start to come in. Nearly always you can chalk it up to rushing to get it done. I take my time inspecting engine hoses and hoses clamps, the bilge pump, stern-drive boot, clean out scuppers and double check the through-hulls and sea strainer. I once found a plastic through-hull for a sink drain at the waterline that initially looked fine, but it was only until I took the time for a closer inspection that I found it was cracked nearly in half on the inside.” – Scott in BoatUS Public Affairs

And here are two “bonus” goof-ups:

The battery goof-up #2: “While this did not happen to me personally, it’s something we see in the claims department every spring: hooking up the battery backwards, causing reverse polarity and a massive electrical short or fire.” – Kerry in BoatUS Marine Insurance

The be prepared goof-up: “My neighbor went out for the first trip of the season and his engine died and needed help to get back in. He suspected fuel issues. Having spare filters aboard or keeping an eye on the fuel-water separator helps, but when all else failed him, he didn’t have an on water towing plan as a backup. Our towing fleet sees this issue frequently each spring.” – Dennis in the BoatUS Membership Department

BoatUS has a no cost Spring Fitting Out Safety Checklist ready to print at www.BoatUS.com/springchecklist and comes with the BoatUS towing app that includes tips for a range of boat types.

Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District

MSD Letter to Customers...Sewer Overflows

Throughout the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District’s (MSD) service area, there are hundreds of points where a combination of stormwater and wastewater may discharge into local waterways from the sewer system during moderate to heavy storms. These sewer overflow points act as relief valves when too much stormwater enters the sewer system, and without them, our community could experience thousands of basement backups and/or extensive street flooding. Depending on where sewer overflows are located within MSD’s system, they are classified as constructed separate sewer overflows --or-- combined sewer overflows. If an overflow discharges or not is dependent upon a number of factors, including how much rain falls over a given period of time. The result is that not all overflows discharge every time it rains – in fact, some overflows will go months or years without discharging.

Pursuant to an Order issued by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), MSD must post notification signs at constructed separate sewer overflows points. A copy of the sign for these overflows is enclosed. (Per EPA requirements, signs for combined sewer overflows are also posted.)
The signs and this mailing are being done to notify the public of the existence and location of constructed separate sewer overflows. It is requested that owners of multiple residential dwellings or multiple commercial properties provide this information to their tenants by either posting this notice in a common area or sending a copy directly to tenants.

The issue of overflows has been a significant focus of MSD’s work for many years. From 1992 to 2011, MSD spent approximately $2.5 billion to eliminate over 350 overflows. Today, our work to address sewer overflows and improve water quality continues in the form of a multi-decade, multi-billion dollar capital construction program that was begun in 2003. Different from past capital programs, our current effort is addressing our community’s wastewater collection and treatment capabilities on a system wide basis, rather than carrying out system improvements one section at a time. This program is a mammoth undertaking that will benefit St. Louisians – and our environment – for generations to come.

For more information on sewer overflows and their locations, please visit www.stlmsd.com or call (314) 768-6260.

Sincerely,
The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD)

12 April 2008 in River History

The Captain of the Port at Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River closed the Upper Mississippi River to all recreational boaters between the Chain of Rocks and the J. B. Bridge in St. Louis.

This closure was a result of extreme high water, strong currents and the difficulty of navigating towing vessels through the St. Louis area during these conditions.

Cape Fair angler catches state-record white bass

STONE COUNTY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reports James Wright of Cape Fair became the most recent record-setting angler in Missouri when he hooked a white bass on Table Rock Lake on a trotline. The new “alternative method” record white bass caught by Wright on April 6 weighed 3-pounds, 4-ounces with a length of 18 3/4 inches. Wright was using shad for bait to try to catch catfish, but instead he caught a state-record white bass.

“I was in my new boat baiting hooks on a trotline, and out of nowhere something hit the line hard,” Wright said. “I grabbed the line and yanked it, and then the fight was on. I finally got it in the boat after about three minutes and was totally shocked to see that it was a white bass.”

Wright added that he wasn’t sure if it was state record so he contacted MDC immediately.

“Once MDC confirmed that the fish was a state record I was so excited,” he said. “This was my dad’s and my dream. I just can’t believe it came true! This is by far the biggest white bass I have ever caught on a trotline. I plan on having it mounted so I’ll never forget catching a fish like that.”

MDC staff verified the record-weight fish using a certified scale in the town of Galena.

“2016 is shaping up to be a year for state-record fish,” said MDC Fisheries Programs Specialist Andrew Branson. “We have already had six new records so far, which is more than an entire year sometimes. The mild weather we have had so far this year means more anglers are fishing, and catching big fish.”

Wright’s recent catch set the state record for white bass in the alternative methods category.

Missouri state-record fish are recognized in two categories: pole-and-line and alternative methods. Alternative methods include: throwlines, trotlines, limb lines, bank lines, jug lines, spearfishing, snagging, snaring, gigging, grabbing, archery, and atlatl.

Conservation makes Missouri a great place to fish. For more information on state-record fish, visit the MDC website at http://mdc.mo.gov/fishing/state-record-fish.

11 April 2011 in River History

In the wee hours of Monday morning, the Alton Fire Department was called out to the Alton Marina to battle a boat fire at the end of I dock. It seems that the fire was started when lightning struck the 30 foot tall sailboat mast. The vessel was burned nearly to the water line. Luckily, the 34 foot Seafarer was in the second to last slip on I dock, which kept the potential damages to a minimum. There were no injuries reported........
