News Release From BoatUS

New TowBoatUS Service Opens in Joliet, Illinois

JOLIET, Ill., April 8, 2016 – Captain Gareth Stamm has been boating and fishing since he was a boy and knows it's in his blood. After two years of working on Lake Michigan as a captain for TowBoatUS Chicago, a 24-hour on water towing and assistance service for recreational boaters, Stamm, who hails from Joliet, decided to bring the same service to his home waters and has opened TowBoatUS Joliet.

“After I saw how simple, inexpensive and incredibly valuable the towing service is to BoatUS members, it was a natural progression for me to make that service available to Joliet and Illinois River boaters," said Stamm.

Much like a reliable auto club for boaters, TowBoatUS offers on water Unlimited Freshwater towing membership plans for boaters and anglers for just $72 a year that includes BoatUS membership. Without a towing plan, boaters who need assistance because they’ve run out of fuel, had a mechanical breakdown or run aground face costs that average over $700 per incident nationally.

Stamm, a wintertime snowplow operator and land surveyor, boated on the rivers and lakes with his parents as a child but traded that in as a young man for racing all-terrain vehicles in the woods and motocross, and was a member of Joliet Mud Turtles. But, when he married into a family of watersports enthusiasts, he rediscovered his “aqua gene,” a natural love of the water, and he sold off his dirt vehicles and bought a boat. Since then, “It’s been all boats, all the time,” said Stamm, who holds a U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license. “I love this work and I feel that I’m really good at it. Last year I did nearly 150 towing, salvage and wreck recovery operations on and around Lake Michigan.”

TowBoatUS Joliet will have two boats in service this year, a 25-foot welded aluminum Sea Ark workboat, with a 300-horsepower inboard that will be stationed in downtown Joliet near Brandon Road Lock and Dam, and a 22-foot StarCraft outboard-powered center console that he will keep on a trailer so it can be quickly deployed anywhere it’s needed. “My service area is not a body of water, it is a ribbon of water” that extends about 60 miles and includes parts of the Des Plaines, Kankakee and Illinois Rivers, Stamm said.

Both boats are painted bright red with the TowBoatUS name and logo emblazoned in white on the hulls. They are fully rigged for towing and salvage, with powerful pumps, battery jump packs, dive gear and extra fuel. Stamm and other licensed captains will run the vessels, always with an emphasis on safety. “We have an outstanding relationship with the local US Coast Guard station and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. They have us on speed dial and when anything bad happens on the water, they call us,” Stamm said.

BoatUS Unlimited towing memberships have no deductibles and they are good for any boat you own, rent or borrow and include a range of discounts with BoatUS membership and a subscription to BoatUS Magazine.

TowBoatUS Joliet can be hailed on VHF channel 16, reached by calling the local office directly at 708-890-9979 or by calling the BoatUS toll-free 24/7 Dispatch Center at 800-391-4869, or via smartphone with the free BoatUS Towing App.

Reeds Spring fisherman takes state-record freshwater drum

REEDS SPRING, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reports that Joshua Cole of Reeds Spring became the most recent record-breaking fisherman in Missouri when he shot a freshwater drum on Table Rock Lake using a bow and arrow. The new “alternative method” record drum taken by Cole on March 31 weighed 30-pounds, 15-ounces. It was 33 inches long and had a girth of 30 inches. He shot the fish around 10 p.m. about one mile from Point 10 on Table Rock Lake.

“I can’t believe I shot a state-record drum,” Cole said. “I knew I was shooting at a big drum, but I didn’t realize how big it was until we got it in the boat.”

Cole added that it took two arrows to get it in the boat.

“It really didn’t put up much of a fight with two arrows in it,” he said. “I’m just glad we got it in the boat with no problems.”

The new freshwater drum broke the previous alternative-method state record of 26-pounds, 8-ounces taken on the Lake of the Ozarks in 2008...

Hi Bill,

Charles Hopkins, aka "Hoppie," helps tie up a barge which was coming in to
change shifts. Hoppie's Marina on the Mississippi River in Kimmswick, Mo.,
has been a popular stop for boaters for several decades. Hoppie and his wife
Fern are great hosts for many travelers. People from around the world have
traveled the Mississippi River by boat and often visit historic Kimmswick
for lunch, dinner, shopping and touring. The marina is a short walk from the
shopping district.

See you on the river!

New Dike  ~ 2nd Chute

Warning...

Second Chute Dike (posted 4-05-16)

Hey Bill…..

Yesterday while in Grafton a guy putted up to the gas dock. He had just hit a rock dike apparently in the middle of the second chute. A guy there said they just put it in last fall and with the water a little high now you cannot see it until it is too late.

Last year I traveled through there some with no trouble. He really damaged his boat and it was taking on water but the pumps were keeping up. Do you know anything about this? Maybe a posting on your website would help people keep away from that area. Just thought I would like you know.

Thanks…..
Mark Muckensturm

Hey Bill,

Pretty sure this is the obstruction that was struck Sunday afternoon by the folks who stopped in Grafton taking on water. It protrudes way out from the island all the way to the channel marker. It was built late last year and only rides a couple feet above water at normal pool. With the water up and wind whipping its nearly impossible to see.

Fish Plant Business Booming........

Several hundreds of thousands of pounds of Asian carp have been harvested from the waterways around the Riverbend, and have been sent to China, all in the name of commerce.

Grafton's former fish processing plant, which closed down in 2014 due to a persistent odor issue, has been refitted to flash freeze the carp for their journey to China.  Grafton Mayor Tom Thompson said that the Chinese process the fish over there.

Thompson adds that recent shipments of 98,000 to 100,000 pounds of Asian carp indicate just how popular these fish are in Asia........

Warning...

Second Chute.....

River History....

April 05, 1998 in River History

Three barges crashed into the Admiral casino docked on the Mississippi River in downtown St. Louis on Saturday night, setting it adrift with about 2,500 people on board for more than two hours.

The accident happened after a towboat that was pushing 12 barges crashed into a bridge near the Gateway Arch, causing four of the barges to break loose.

No one was seriously injured, but five or six people required medical treatment.

The Admiral, had no engines and it floated downstream for about 500 feet before the towboat caught up with it and held it in place against the river bank. Other towboats secured the four loose as well as the eight barges that the towboat had to release to assist the Admiral. One barge sank.

People on the Admiral were transferred 200 at a time to two excursion boats and taken to shore. The last of the passengers were taken to shore at about 10:30 P.M.

News Release From BoatUS

BoatUS Foundation Awarded $150,000+ to Address Marine Debris Challenges
Matching funds, In-kind Services Add to Grant funding from the NOAA Marine Debris Program and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation

ANNAPOLIS, MD, April 4, 2016 – Boaters know the dangers that marine debris can pose, both to their own vessel and the environment. Long known for its successful national fishing line recycling program, the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water will be tackling the challenging problem of waterborne junk in three projects this spring that will help remove large debris, a sunken fishing boat, and will explore the issue of boats running afoul of commercial fishing gear.

A $51,000 grant to remove large debris comes from the NOAA Marine Debris Program to partner with the local on water towing and assistance fleets of TowBoatUS South Shore, OH, and TowBoatUS Ocean City, MD, as well as local monitoring agencies – all whom will be matching funds through in-kind services. With these service donations as well as a BoatUS Foundation contribution, the donated in-kind services will surpass $52,000, doubling the original NOAA grant amount.

Reno Beach, Ohio:
Offshore of Reno Beach, OH, in Western Lake Erie, TowBoatUS South Shore will remove a sunken 35-foot steel commercial fishing boat with a net attached. The wreck is located near sensitive habitat, a state park, and two National Wildlife Refuges.

Ocean City, Maryland:
In the Atlantic, three to seven miles offshore of Ocean City, MD, TowBoatUS Ocean City will remove two commercial fishing nets that are entangled on an artificial reef.

In both locations the nets are still actively fishing and trapping aquatic life.

“Our TowBoatUS towing captains identified these problem areas and brought them to our attention,” said BoatUS Foundation Vice President Susan Shingledecker. “They are experts in salvage and are eager to lend their expertise.” Shingledecker added that a local monitoring agency will study the environmental impacts of the removal.

Preventing Entanglements:
With a $103,000 grant from the Fishing for Energy program, the BoatUS Foundation will study and develop educational tools to reduce interactions between recreational boats and fixed commercial fishing gear. Administered by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) and funded by the NOAA Marine Debris Program, the Fishing for Energy grant aims to prevent and reduce the impacts of derelict fishing gear in the marine environment.

Since 2008, Fishing for Energy has been a public-private partnership between NOAA Marine Debris Program, energy-from-waste facility operator Covanta, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), and metals recycler Schnitzer Steel Industries. This grant is being matched by a $140,000 donation of services by the BoatUS Foundation.

“Anyone who spends a lot of time boating in areas with a lot of crab or lobster trap floats knows it can be a challenge navigating without accidentally catching a pot line on your propeller,” said Shingledecker. “We’ll be conducting focus groups in multiple regions to learn more about this interaction and look for ways to message about preventing entanglements and what to do if you catch a pot when boating. Most boaters don’t realize that cut pots sink to the bottom and continue actively fishing for up to ten years. This is seafood that never makes it to your dinner plate or supports a fisherman’s income. We want to learn more about this challenge and see how we can make a difference.”

U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers

A Look At   "The Greatest Model Ever Built"........

While the achievements of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers aren't always visible or appreciated, they do get quite a bit of attention when things go wrong.

The Corps do have some instances of creating something truly beautiful, and the Mississippi River Basin Model in Jackson, Mississippi is one of those occasions.

Construction on the model began in 1943, but it wasn't completed until 1966.  Over it's life span of six years, the model ran 79 simulations.  Now, the model sits abandoned in a Jackson, Mississippi park........

Biologists:  More Water In The River May Hurt Native Species........

Plans have been proposed to renovate the Zink Dam on the Arkansas River at Tulsa, Oklahoma, as well construct another dam further downstream in order to create pools for recreation, and spur economic growth.

Biologists are concerned that the proposal may be at the expense of some of Oklahoma's more rare species.  Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Fisheries Biologist Josh Johnson says that another dam may hurt, or even eradicate several native fish.

Johnson said that they need to consider the species that were in the water before man came along, including the shovelnose sturgeon, American eel, white bass, sauger and paddlefish........

Rounds says that the Corps is responsible for managing the Missouri River in order to meet the needs of not only the Corps, but the surrounding communities as well........

Meramec River Near Kirkwood, Missouri

Flooding Forces AmVets To Relocate........

While the American Veterans Post 1, located along the Meramec River near Kirkwood, has fought floodwaters before, the historic late December flooding has destroyed their post.

According to former AmVets Rivers National President, Rob Quick, the floodwater engulfed their property, submerging all with the exception of a few feet of the building.

Quick added that their pavilion was destroyed, and pretty much everything was swept away.  They believe that the building itself has been irreparably damaged........

Consumers Ignore Ethanol Levels In Fuel........

A recent survey reveals that many consumers don't pay attention to ethanol levels in gasoline, warning labels, and are mostly influenced by fuel costs.

The national poll commissioned by the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute found that awareness and knowledge of how to use high-ethanol fuel blends remains largely unchanged among consumers over the past several years.

The most recent poll shows that 64% of Americans 18 and older that own outdoor power equipment say that either they are not sure (42%) or do not pay attention (22%) to the type of fuel they are using........

Scientists:  Invasive Species Impact Greater Than Previously Believed.........

Scientists with the University of Wisconsin-Madison reports that the impact of invasive species in the Great Lakes has been grossly underestimated.

Researchers have found that a single non-native species in a single inland lake has caused between $80 million and $163 million in damages.

According to Jake Walsh, a Ph.D. candidate at the UW Center for Limnology, the study shows that prior efforts at placing a price tag on the effect of invasive species has not come close to the true costs........

Clarksville, Mo On Top 10 Prettiest Small Towns List........

Recently, Clarksville was listed amongst the top 10 prettiest small towns in the state of Missouri. Missouri Life noted that Clarksville is a picturesque, arts-loving community located on the Mississippi River along the bluffs.

This top 10 list was published in the April-May issue of Missouri Life Magazine, with the tag line that the magazine was recognizing towns boasting less than 1,000 residents that are among the most beautiful.

The magazine also discussed the town of "Perry's" history and architecture, as well as it's position as the "southern gateway to Mark Twain Lake.

New Beginning For Eureka Following Floods........

Two and a half months ago, record floodwaters devastated the heart of Eureka, Old Town, forcing businesses to shut down.  Residents were in no mood to ring in the New Year.

Saturday evening, the City of Eureka celebrated a new beginning by hosting New Year's Eve 2.0.  Central Avenue was blocked off for a big block party, a parade, and live music, featuring two local bands.

Several of the businesses have reopened following extensive renovations which include new plumbing and updated electrical systems.  The celebration is intended to thank the businesses for staying in town, as well as the volunteers who helped with getting the town back on it's feet again........

City Celebrates 1st Phase of Katy Bridge Work........

On Saturday, state and local officials were on hand to celebrate the completion of the first phase of the Katy Bridge spanning the Missouri River at Booneville.

The Bridge was constructed in the 1930s, and efforts in the area to preserve the span have been underway for several years.  Saturday's ribbon cutting commemorates the efforts allowing visitors to walk 250 feet over the Missouri River from the Booneville bank.

There is more work needed before the full bridge is accessible, and before it is linked to the Katy Trail.  The next phase of work will be focusing on the lift section, with the intention of making it functional........

Water Quality Testing Buoy Set Up On The River........

People strolling along the Cape Girardeau riverfront may notice a yellow buoy floating near the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge spanning the Mississippi River.

The Missouri Department of Conservation reports that the buoy is part of a water quality monitoring project.  It allows scientists to monitor the water for clarity, oxygen, nutrients, and temperature.  The buoy also collects data on wind and sunlight.

According to Molly Sobotka, a resource scientist with the MDC, the information collected helps them to understand the water quality of the river, regional differences, and how nitrogen and sediments flow through the river system.

Lewis and Clark Statue Returning to Riverfront

According to Fox2 News, "the Lewis and Clark statue that was located at the foot of Washington avenue on the St. Louis riverfront next to Eads Bridge is scheduled to be reinstalled today."

The 23 foot tall, 9,000-pound bronze statue, officially “The Captains’ Return,” was removed last April to make way for the construction on the Gateway Arch grounds and the raising of Lenore K. Sullivan Boulevard.

The new location for the statue is supposed to be about 200 yards to the south of the original location and about 17 feet higher.  This should make the the statue less susceptible to flooding.

Public Knowledge Lacking On Ethanol Blends........

According to a recent online poll conducted on behalf of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute, consumer awareness and knowledge of how to use high ethanol blend fuels has remained unchanged over the past several years.

The poll results reveal that price is what drives decisions at the pumps, and consumers pay little attention to warning labels on the pumps.

The majority of engine manufacturers say that gasoline that contains more than 10% ethanol (E10) may damage or destroy the engines on outboard power equipment........
