Volunteers Gather To Say Goodbye To The Goldenrod........

On Thursday, volunteers will be heading to the Illinois River near Kampsville, Illinois to say their final farewells to the Goldenrod Showboat.

Last summer, the Goldenrod suffered irreparable damage during efforts to save it from the flooding Illinois River.  Since that time, volunteers have been working to remove artifacts such as chandeliers, gilded mirrors, photographs, and furnishings.

The volunteers are planning a "celebration of life" as a way to say goodbye to the Goldenrod.  Jacob Medford, vice president of the Historic Riverboat Preservation Association says that the last time he walks off the vessel, he will probably tear up........

River History....

March 31, 1973 in Boating History

Flood of 1973
The Mississippi River, at St. Louis, reached it's peak flood level during the record breaking 77 day flood.

The extended flood caused more than $1 billion in damages and 33 deaths.

The cause of the 1973 flood is attributed to above average rain fall that started in October 1972 in the river basins that feed river. More than normal amounts of water flowed down the river throughout the winter, setting the stage for major flooding when the March rains started.

Most of the Midwest was already saturated, the Mighty Mississippi began rising and inundating communities along the river. The worst came in early April when many levees failed south of St. Louis and the river claimed 6 million acres of ground......

Miami International Boat Show

Judge Rules Key Biscayne Lawsuit Can Proceed........

On Tuesday, a Miami-Dade judge ruled that the Village of Key Biscayne's lawsuit against the City of Miami over the Miami International Boat Show can proceed.

The lawsuit challenges the city's creation and use of the Miami Marine Stadium Park and Basin for the boat show.  A motion to dismiss the lawsuit was denied.

The City of Miami contends that the lawsuit should be dismissed based on the grounds that Key Biscayne lacks standing, and the village's claims in the suit were insufficient grounds for a lawsuit.  The judge disagreed........

Generator's Elevated Location Kept Sewage Running........

Many years ago, the City of Ottawa, Illinois was in the process of having a new multi-million dollar sewage plant constructed, and Ottawa Building Official Mike Sutfin took exception to the backup generator being installed at ground level.

Sutfin insisted on the generator being installed three feet above base flood elevation.  So, it was installed on a pedestal six feet in the air.  During the 2013 flooding, water crept about four feet up the side of the pedestal.

If the generator had remained at ground level, it would have been submerged, causing to sewage treatment facility to be lost, resulting in raw sewage being released into the Illinois River........

River History....

March 30, 1822 in Boating History

The United States Congress passed an Act that vested land in the state of Illinois for construction of a man made navigable canal (CSSC) to connect Lake Michigan and the Chicago River with the Illinois and Mississippi River.

In 1887 the Illinois General Assembly decided to reverse the flow of the Chicago River through civil engineering by taking water from Lake Michigan and discharging it into the Mississippi River watershed through the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.

The hydrologic connection was made in 1900 giving commercial navigation access to the Mississippi watershed, but along with that  came Chicago's sewage.

Mississippi River Near Davenport, Iowa

The Mississippi River Was Expected To Crest Monday........

On Monday, the Mississippi River in the Quad Cities was at 15.6 feet, and is expected to crest at that level.  It is forecast that the river will fall below the 15 foot flood stage by Thursday.

Rock Island and Davenport had prepared for flooding as the river was on the way up.  Davenport does not intend to remove their flooding countermeasures until early April.

There were several roads closed in the Quad Cities region, even though the crest was not as high as anticipated.  South Concord between River Drive and Utah will remain closed until the Mississippi River falls below 13.5 feet........

Easter Marks End Of One Season, Start Of Another........

On Sunday, The Loading Dock in Grafton, Illinois hosted the Easter Eggstravaganza, which wraps up the ice skating rink season, and marks the beginning of the Grafton Riverside Flea Market.

The long-time family owned venue had the Easter Bunny handing out decorative eggs to the youngsters.  The kids could also get their faces painted and balloon animals, all while enjoying the last bit of ice skating until next year.

The Loading Dock had been a seasonally operated business for the past 25 years, closing over the winter.  Last year, all that changed with the opening of the indoor ice skating rink........

River History....

March 29, 1969 in Boating History

On March 29, 1969 a replica of Christopher Columbus' sailing ship, the Santa Maria was moored along side the Admiral Riverboat on the downtown St. Louis riverfront. Alfonso J. Cervantes, former mayor of St. Louis Mayor, acquired the ship in a bidding war with the Rockefellers. He wanted to use it to recall the Spanish history of St. Louis.

The Santa Maria did not fit in very well with the rest of the Riverfront at that time and quickly became the punch-line of many jokes.

On July 28, 1969, a storm caused the Santa Maria and the Becky Thatcher to break loose from their moorings. They floated downstream and hit an Illinois dock. The Santa Maria was damaged on her starboard side and sank. The ship was raised and repaired.

In March of 1973 the Sana Maria She found a new home in Titusville, Florida. In 1974 she was gutted by a fire.

Santa Maria is Latin for Saint Mary

The remaining work will include changing the 40 lights on the flood wall to LED bulbs, finishing concrete work, adding the pedestrian bridge over Sloan Creek, and completing the trail on the southern end.

During the duration of the construction work, contractor Nip Kelley Equipment Company will have barricades set up to protect the visitors to the riverfront.  The majority of the riverfront will remain accessible during construction........

The River Will Crest Tuesday, Flooding Will Remain Minor........

The National Weather Service says that the Mississippi River will keep rising at Muscatine, Iowa, however, it will remain at a minor flood stage throughout the week.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the National Weather Service determined that flood stage at Muscatine is 16 feet.  By Sunday morning, the river exceeded 16 feet.  By Tuesday evening, it should crest at 16.8 feet, and remain over 16 feet until Friday morning.

Tim Gross, meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Quad Cities office says that the Mississippi River is a slowly responding river, adding that rainfall upstream affects the Quad Cities days later.  Gross said that Sunday's rainfall could prolong the time the river is up, but won't increase it's level........

Levee Repairs Limited Problems From High Water In 2016........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has reported that the $450 million spent on repairing levees along the Lower Mississippi River following the 2011 flooding has allowed the 2016 winter floods to come and go with little damage expected.

Mark Wingate, deputy district engineer for project management with the Corps' New Orleans district says that approximately half of the estimated $250 million of repairs needed in the New Orleans District following the current high water will most likely go toward dredging sediment from the river channels.

At this time, five dredges are working in the Mississippi River's Southwest Pass, which is the primary navigation channel, in order to keep pace with the greater amount of sediment being deposited........

The mobile piece of equipment was not secured to the barge and tipped over into the water taking the employee in the boom with it. His body was found attached to the lift. Miniature Railroad Getting Back On Track After Floods........

The severe flooding of late last year threatened to derail the historic Wabash, Frisco, and Pacific Railroad Association in western St. Louis County.

For the past several months, crews have been working hard to get the operation back on track.  The floodwaters from the Meramec River inundated all seven of the association's buildings.

The water also swamped the small 12 inch gauge steam and diesel engines.  Luckily, the passenger cars, which carry visitors for a ride along the rails, were spared........

Wastewater Treatment Should Resume In April........

Three months ago, heavy flooding in late December hit the St. Louis region, causing the Metropolitan Sewer District's Fenton treatment plant to shut down.

MSD spokesman Sean Hadley says that this was the first time that MSD has lost a waste treatment plant.  He adds that repairs are complete on the clarifying tank, which is their secondary treatment process........

Barge Strikes Form Work For New Bridge........

Early Friday morning, a tow vessel struck and damaged some of the form work installed as part of the construction of the new US 68/KY 80 Lake Barkley Bridge.

Reportedly, wind blew the tow into the concrete forms for Pier 8 of the new bridge.  The tow's captain reports minimal damage to the starboard lead barge.  The barges were empty.

Initial reports were not certain whether the existing Lake Barkley Bridge, or the new construction was struck, so the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet sent out bridge inspectors out to the scene........

More Than $1 Million Allotted For Riverfront Improvements........

Over a year ago, major renovations were proposed for the riverfront at Hannibal, Missouri, and the project was expected to cost millions of dollars.

During the recent meeting of Hannibal's Planning and Zoning Commission, the Parks and Recreation Department turned in a five-year capital improvement plan that estimate that $1.125 million will be spent on the project during fiscal year 2017 - 2018, and 2020-2021.

Hannibal City Manager Jeff LaGarce says that the five year capital improvement plan is not a sure thing, and that it is a bit early to make a project cost estimate........

The "New" Shark Boat is on the near side and the original is on the far side.   Captain Tim took a cast off of the original to make this new boat. As you can see, the new boat has the same look as the original but it's just a little bigger.

Underneath all the "Shark" fiberglass is a 22 foot Tahoe deck boat that provides a lot of room for site seeing passengers.

The new boat is scheduled to leave for California this morning, where it will get a new interior and then put into use.

Lake Of The Ozarks

10.11 Lb. Largemouth Bass Caught On The Lake........

Recently, a father and son fishing team from Texas had a fishing trip that they will be talking about for years to come.  On Tuesday, March 15, 53 year old Val Grikis and his 12 year old son Ryan were fishing with local guide Jack Uxa near the 8 Mile Marker of the Grand Glaize Arm of the Lake.

The group had been fishing for several hours, catching and releasing about 15 keeper-sized bass.  Around noon, while fishing in three feet of water near the shore, Val felt his line go taut.  Uxa said Val believed he had snagged a carp, as the fish was so big, and fighting so hard.

After landing the fish, they found that they had caught a 10.11 pound largemouth bass.  Uxa said that he knew there were some big bass in the Lake, but he had no idea that there was a bass that large swimming down there.  The group released the bass, and reports that it swam off immediately........

Eads Bridge Has Not Been Inspected Since 2010........

Each year, the Illinois Auditor General's Office releases their annual reports, which includes a compilation of audits primarily of state agencies from the previous year.

One of the audits revealed that there are bridges that the Department of Transportation has not inspected in more than a decade, including the Eads Bridge.

In the Metro East, the bridges with the longest time since inspection included three spanning the Mississippi River, the Eads Bridge, last inspected in 2010, the Interstate 255 Bridge, last inspected in 2011, and the Highway 51 Bridge near Chester, also last inspected in 2011........

River History....

24 March 2010 in River History

The "Original Sharkys" Restaurant opened on the river at North Shore Marina on a Wednesday night under the direction of Tim Tighe, John Biondo and Dutch Hauhe.

The river had some minor flooding going at the time that caused the road across the harbor, going to the restaurant, to be under water. The restaurant then provided a Shuttle Suburban to ferry customers back and forth all night long through the flood water….

The restaurant had to close it's doors a few days later because the water on the road got to deep, only to re-open a few days later after they purchased a pontoon boat to shuttle patrons back and forth.

Donations Sought By Amphitheater Commission........

The Alton Amphitheater Commission may not be ready to announce any concerts for the 2016 season, however, on Monday, they set a tentative budget, and decided to send out mailers to solicit donations.

The mailers will be sent to businesses in Alton, requesting funds for the annual July 3 fireworks display, which is held at Riverfront Park, near the Alton Marina.

So far, the Commission is planning three concerts, the annual Senior Services Plus benefit in July, the July 3 fireworks show, and the Food Truck Festival on August 27.  Other groups and individuals hold events at the Amphitheater as well........

Take Me Fishing, Disney Teamed Up To Promote Boating, Fishing........

Back in 2013, the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation has been working with Walt Disney World Resort and Disney Media to boost participation in boating and fishing via digital properties and on-resort branding.

RBFF commissioned a study through Research Now that revealed that exposure to the Take Me Fishing-Disney advertising increases the likelihood that target audiences will participate in boating and fishing.

Additionally, the target audiences that saw the Take Me Fishing messages via the Disney alliance have more awareness and believe that Take Me Fishing is dedicated to assisting families in living healthy, active lives........

New Year's Flooding Still Affecting The River........

Months after the New Year's Flood, areas such as the Current River are still affected, as the floodwaters left behind debris and altered the course of portions of the river.

Lendal Gregory with the National Parks Service said that the New Year's Flood caused erosion, and a lot of changes in the Current River.  He adds that the New Year's Flood caused more damage than the last five floods combined.

During the summer of 2015, the Current River was closed 21 days due to flooding.  Business owners in Van Buren are hoping to start a smooth floating season, with no more flooding........

Gateway Arch Tram Rides Have Resumed........

On Wednesday, officials at the Gateway Arch announced that even though work is continuing on the expanded underground museum and visitors center, tram rides to the top of the Arch have resumed, albeit on a limited basis.

According to Rhonda Schier, spokeswoman for the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, the tram rides were halted shortly after the first of the year.  On Tuesday, the tram rides resumed with a "soft opening".

Visitors that purchase tickets for the tram may enter the Arch.  The tickets are sold in advance for specific times, and may be obtained from the Old Courthouse, by phone, or on line........

Westbound Boone Bridge Lane Closing........

The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced that one westbound lane of Interstate 64 (Highway 40) will be closed over the Daniel Boone Bridge for two weeks.

The right hand lane of I-64 will be closed between Chesterfield Airport Road to Highway 94 to allow crews to perform pavement work.  The land will close at 6 am Monday, and remain closed through April 11.

Starting in January of 2013, MoDOT began construction on a new eastbound span, and rehabilitated the 1980s era bridge to carry westbound traffic........

During the high water inspection, the Corps has scheduled four public meetings that will be held aboard the Motor Vessel Mississippi in selected towns, including Cairo, Illinois, Memphis, Tennessee, Lake Providence, Louisiana, and New Orleans, Louisiana.

Project To Improve Barge Traffic Worries Residents........

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials believe that a proposed project that would alter the Mississippi River's flow near Grand Tower may save taxpayers millions of dollars, and improve barge traffic in the region.

The Corps spends millions of dollars on dredging in the area, and would like to install dike-like structures to narrow the river flow, reducing the need for dredging.

Residents, however, have raised concerns that the project could jeopardize their communities.  They believe that the installation of the man-made structures will cause the river level to rise........

Missouri Flooding Aftermath

EPA Removed 3,000 Tons Of Debris Following Flooding........

On Tuesday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released figures showing that they, and their contractors collected nearly 3,000 tons of residential debris and hazardous materials following the late December flooding.

The final figures reveal that crews collected 2,982 tons (5,964,000 pounds) of residential debris from St. Louis, St. Charles, Franklin, and Jefferson counties in Missouri.

In addition to the typical construction, demolition, and plant debris, crews collected propane and compressed gas tanks, stoves, refrigerators, small engines, batteries, electronics, and sandbags........

Three Ways To Set Two Anchors........

The though is that if one anchor is good, two must be better.  The setting of multiple anchors really depends upon your particular situation, as well as several variables, including sea conditions, wind, water depth, and other vessels in the area.

Boating Magazine recently penned an article offering three ways to anchor your boat with two anchors........

The Mississippi River Will Rise This Week........

Water means jobs
Water is the essential building block of life. But it is more than just essential to quench thirst or protect health; water is vital for creating jobs and supporting economic, social, and human development.

Today, half of the world's workers - 1.5 billion people - work in water-related sectors. Moreover, nearly all jobs, regardless of the sector, depend directly on water. Yet, despite the indelible link between jobs and water, millions of people whose livelihoods depend on water are often not recognized or protected by basic labour rights.

2016 Theme: Better Water, Better Jobs
This year's World Water Day theme focuses on the central role that water plays in creating and supporting good quality jobs. Learn more about this year's theme in this video.... click here

Why Did Landscapers Plant Radishes On The Arch Grounds?

Last fall, crews planted approximately 400,000 radishes all over the Gateway Arch Grounds.  By the end of October, bright green tufts had sprouted around the park.  Now, they are rotting away, but, they are doing what they were intended to do.

These radishes grew thick tap roots, nearly two feet deep.  As they decompose, they are leaving behind hundreds of thousands of long, skinny holes in the soil, softening it, and releasing nutrients into the ground.

The Arch Grounds soil is not particularly fertile, as in is primarily low-quality clay fill, which was dumped atop of the remnants of demolished buildings.  Officials have said that the old beetle-threatened ash trees were not going to last much longer, as the ground was not fertile enough to support big trees for many years........

Illinois Flooding Aftermath

Roads May Not Be Repaired After FEMA Aid Denial........

Officials in Alexander County, Illinois are hoping that the appeal of a decision by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to deny aid will help get their roads repaired following the New Years Flood.

Alexander County Highway Engineer Jeff Denny says that they have many roads that are damaged and still closed, and those  roads might have to remain closed.

Currently, Denny and others are looking for damage that wasn't included in the initial aid request, in the hopes of overcoming the threshold to become a federal disaster........

River History....

March 22, 2010  in River History

The Robert E. Lee, a once popular riverboat rstaurant on the St. Louis riverfront, burned down to it's hull while moored just north of downtown. Firefighters arrived in the early morning hours and fought the fierce flames from both the land and from the water, but were unable to save the vessel.
The boat had bought by a new owner in an auction in 2008 and was being rehabbed to get it ready for a move to St. Charles.

The fire was called "Suspicious."

Rising River Prompts Phase II Flood Fight Plans........

On Tuesday, the Mississippi River is forecast to reach 15 1/2 feet in New Orleans, so the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has called for increased inspections and more restrictions on work on and around levees and floodwalls.

Officials are saying that the level of the Mississippi River will not require the opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway, but water is still leaking through the wooden slats in the spillway weir, meaning that the water level between the river and Lake Pontchartrain is higher than normal.

The Phase II Flood Fight Plans means that inspections and restrictions are put in place along the Mississippi River, downstream from Baton Rouge when the river rises over 15 feet on the Carrolton Gauge at New Orleans........

A Body Recovered ........

At around 3 pm Sunday, officials were called out to the Illinois River after a resident aboard a boat discovered a body floating in the river about three quarters of a mile downstream of the old LaGrange Locks.

Greig had been staying with family and friends at a home near the Old LaGrange Locks.  When responders searched the area, footprints leading to the river were discovered......
