After the game we went to Hooters for our free beer. Dave says nothing is free in Florida. I am sending you two photos one of the Cardinal fans: Denny & Reggie Heisler, Bob Hampel, Dave Ash, Judy, Myself and Kay Ward. Second photo of the Hooter Servers with the RiverBills Sticker.

O Yeah... Cardinals won 5 to 3.

Bill:

My brother DJ sent me some pictures of the low water at his place on the 35 mile marker of Lake of the Ozarks. Seems that during the normal winter drawdown AmerenUE dropped it a little more due to the rainfall forecast. Lake level is at or below the 653' mark in these pics. Low point for winter is normally about 654'.

He says it makes it easy to retrieve stuff they dropped during the summer!

The Goldenrod Showboat:  End Of An Era........

The Goldenrod Showboat has a proud history, going back to 1909.  Between 1909 and 1937, she plied the rivers, travelling from town to town, presenting shows and then moving on to the next stop.

In 1937, the Goldenrod was sent to St. Louis for repairs, and ended up spending the remainder of it's days in the region.  She remained on the St. Louis riverfront until 1983.

Over the past decade there has been high hopes for restoring the Goldenrod to her former glory, however, those hopes have been dashed, as she is slated to be scrapped in April........

Brad Hagen Hopes Grafton Oyster Bar Becomes Tourist Destination........

Last Friday, the Grafton Oyster Bar opened at the former location of the Big Kahuna, at 215 Water Street.  According to one of the owners, Brad Hagen, business has been "brisk" so far, and it appears that the restaurant will be a big hit.

For quite some time, Hagen has been interested in opening an affiliate of the Broadway Oyster Bar & Grill in St. Louis, and with John and Victoria Johnson, Broadway Oyster Bar & Grill owners, that interest has become reality.

Hagen is the head chef at the Broadway Oyster Bar & Grill, and he will continue in that role while taking on ownership duties at the Grafton Oyster Bar........

Can't Seem to Find the Time to Take a Boat Navigation Course? Now You Can - Online

Go at Your Own Pace with New Modern Marine Navigation Online Course by BoatUS Foundation and US Coast Guard Auxiliary

ANNAPOLIS, MD, March 9, 2016 – If you’re looking to improve your marine navigation but can’t seem to find the time for a classroom course, the new, go at your own pace, online “Modern Marine Navigation” course from the BoatUS Foundation and US Coast Guard Auxiliary could be the answer. The course can be taken anytime at home or on the road and allows course takers to stop and return to the course as their busy schedules permit.

Aimed at giving recreational boaters on any body of water the navigational skills for a safe afternoon of boating or navigating on longer journeys, it’s available for a $40 course fee at www.BoatUS.org/navigation. For a limited time, using the early bird discount using promotional code “Nav2016” will save you an additional 10%.

“Classroom courses are a great way to learn, but it can be a challenge to find the block of time,” said BoatUS Foundation Director of Education Amanda Suttles Pérez. “We’re offering a very comprehensive, in-depth course on navigation in a way that works with your schedule.”

The course uses a series of online voyages as practical learning tools that course takers complete using navigation skills. Quizzes check progress and allow you to review previous course material at any time with no penalty. Topics covered include:

• Both the pre-planning of and actual en route navigation.
• Reading and interpreting a nautical chart.
• Reading and using compass.
• Fixing your boat’s position using visual techniques and by way of electronics.
• Plotting fixes and dead reckoning positions on chart.
• Laying out courses, plot positions, and measuring distances on a nautical chart.
• Time-speed-distance calculations.
• Obtaining essential information not contained on a chart with navigation reference publications.
• Obtaining and using information on tides and tidal currents.

Missouri State Highway Patrol
NEWS RELEASE

Flash Flooding Is Extremely Dangerous To Motorists & Boaters

Colonel J. Bret Johnson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, urges the public to make smart decisions regarding flash flooding. The weather forecasts indicates heavy rains will cover much of Missouri which will affect safety on both the waterways and roadways. Flooding, especially flash flooding, has proven to be extremely dangerous and can be fatal. The Patrol has placed additional assets and manpower “on call” in areas expected to be most affected.
Never drive through fast-moving waters; even a small amount of fast-moving water can sweep a slow-moving vehicle off the roadway. If your vehicle becomes stuck in rising water, get out quickly and move to higher ground. Last December’s flooding took 16 lives when vehicles were swept away, disabled, or submerged by floodwaters. Troopers rescued more than 40 people during that same month after they were trapped by flood waters.

For their safety and that of their passengers, drivers are reminded to stay alert while driving in areas known to flood. Barricades closing a roadway are there to protect you. Drivers must respect barriers or barricades put in place by MoDOT — it is extremely dangerous and a violation of state law to drive around them. For information regarding road closures please visit Missouri Department of Transportation’s (MoDOT) road condition map at the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s website www.mshp.dps.mo.gov.
Drivers need to slow down and turn on their headlights in these types of conditions. Weather conditions requiring the use of windshield wipers are usually those that affect visibility. Motorists are reminded that state law requires them to turn on their vehicle’s headlights any time they are using the windshield wipers. It only takes a second to turn on your vehicle’s headlights. But, that second could make you more visible to other drivers and prevent a traffic crash.
The Patrol asks boaters across the state to take extra precautions when boating in flooded areas. Large amounts of rainfall cause rivers and lakes to become swollen. Many times the right decision is to stay off the water. In areas where lakes or rivers spill over the banks, erosion and damage can occur to flooded structures, docks, or water laden levees by boat wakes. Boaters should avoid operating in these areas. If operation in these areas is necessary, boaters should operate at idle speed so as to avoid causing a wake.

Flooded rivers and streams with moving currents present some of the most dangerous situations a boater can encounter. Fast moving water can easily capsize or flip a boat—or personal watercraft—especially when combined with fixed objects such as trees and buildings. Boaters should avoid any operations in these swift flowing waters.
Approximately 63 percent of Missouri fatal crash victims who are required to be restrained are NOT at the time of the traffic crash. The Patrol urges motorists to protect themselves and their passengers by making sure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained in a seat belt or child restraint. Join us in supporting the Drive To Zero Highway Deaths. Watercraft operators should ensure that everyone in the vessel is wearing an approved life jacket. Click It 4 Life And Wear It!!

Controlling The Wandering Mississippi River........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New Orleans District says that the Mississippi River and Tributaries project is the largest flood control endeavor in the world, and represents one of man's most successful civil works projects.

The MR&T project offers protection to the 36,000 square miles of the lower Mississippi River Valley.  It was authorized via the Flood Control Act of 1928, and is intended to control a "project flood", which is the largest flood expected to happen.

Over the recorded history of the Mississippi River, major floods have happened, with the worst in the lower Mississippi River valley occurring in 1927.  Some 26,000 square miles were affected, and a plan was developed to mitigate future flooding........

The National Weather Service has predicted that some portions of Missouri could see up to seven inches of rainfall this week, between Tuesday and Sunday.

The National Weather Service says that smaller creeks, streams and rivers will most likely flood.  In response to the predicted rainfall, Amren announced that they would be increasing the discharges from the Bagnell Dam from Monday through Friday.

On Monday, the elevation of the lake was about 654.5 feet.  By Wednesday, Amren expects the level to fall to 653.4 feet, prior to rising to 655 feet due to the rainfall........

Take A Peek Inside The Abandoned McBarge........

The $9 million "McBarge", is slated for a secret makeover.  The barge was a floating McDonald's restaurant built for Expo 86, a World's Fair event held in Vancouver in 1986.

The restaurant has been abandoned for 30 years.  It was originally intended to be moved to a different location once the fair ended, however, it lost it's novelty, and was abandoned.

The barge is going to receive a $3 million plus renovation, but the actual plans are secret.  Barge owner Howard Meakin says that the barge will be refitted and restored, but he is keeping the remainder of the plans to himself........

Remainder Of The Boone Bridge Was Been Demolished Yesterday........

Monday morning, the second and final blast took down the remainder of the old westbound span of the Daniel Boone Bridge.  All lanes of Interstate 64 (Highway 40) were shut down for about an hour.

The bridge consisted of three spans, the original 1930s era three lane westbound span, the 1980s era eastbound span, and a new eastbound bridge.  The existing eastbound span was rehabilitated and reopened for westbound traffic.

The first section of the old Boone Bridge was removed back in February.  The second blast was originally slated for last Wednesday, however, it was postponed due to thunderstorms in the forecast........

Homeowner In Waiting On FEMA After New Year's Flood........

Chandler Vonderahe of Fenton says that he is the owner of the sole remaining house standing on Opps Lane, following the New Year's Floods.  The home is adjacent to the flooded MSD waste treatment plant.

According to Vonderahe, he is waiting on the Federal Emergency Management Agency, as he believes that they are going to buy out the people in the flood plain.

Currently, Vonderahe is living with his mother while he tries to figure out what to do next.  One thing is certain, Vonderahe has no intentions of living near a flood plain.........

Heavy Storms Could Lead To Major Flooding........

A storm system that is hitting California with more rain and mountain snow through Monday could cause major flooding in and around the Lower Mississippi River Valley this week.

The storm's slow movement, coupled with moisture pulled from the Gulf of Mexico, will increase the risks of heavy rainfall from the southern and central Plains, to portions of the Lower Mississippi and Ohio River Valleys.

Between Tuesday and Friday, heavy rainfall will drench eastern Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and portions of Missouri.  Toward the end of the week, the storms should cross the Mississippi River, reaching from Mississippi to Southern portions of Indiana........

JOURNEY UP!

Jenny and I left for La Cross Wisconsin last Monday morning to see the Premier of Ashley's movie Journey Down. The trip up on the River Road in Wisconsin was beautiful. Eagles everywhere, people ice fishing, mountains on one side and the rails then river on the other. We arrived at her university to a packed theater with by show time people standing in the back. The movie is awesome. It shows every aspect of life on the river. If you spent any time with Ashley in the harbors or on the river, you and or your voice are probably in the movie. The movie lasted 1:15 minutes with a discussion afterwards. At the end of the discussion I made a presentation to Ashley as follows:

A grant well spent! The Experience and journey through the core of America. A place where respect is earned. But at the same time respect is given freely.

You said in the movie you where sad to leave us! Yet people came by looking for your boat for days missing you also.

There is a phrase on what I am presenting you.

"To us All!"

All is everyone you met along the way.

All is everyone touched by your Film

All is not me.

All is us

All is

"All for one, one for All"

So far, Hawley and his crew have pretty much identified the perimeter of the vessel, which was built in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1839.  She carried supplies from St. Louis to the Frontier via the Missouri River.  She hit a tree and sank in 1841........

Below Normal Runoff Expected This Year........

The Missouri River Basin is expected to see below normal runoff this year.  In February, runoff into the basin above Sioux City was 1.9 million acre feet, which is 170% of normal, but below normal snowpack in the mountains will mean lower amounts of runoff later this year.

Warm temperatures during February melted much of the snowpack across the plains, causing the high runoff totals.

Jody Farhat, chief of the Missouri River Basin Water Management Division says that the runoff that would normally occur in March and April happened early this year.  Also, warmer temperatures caused some of the river ice to melt, contributing to the higher runoff totals for February........

For Immediate Release

Curtains Closed for Good

ST. LOUIS, MO – 03/06/2016 – The Historic Riverboat Preservation Association is hosting a celebration of life for the Goldenrod Showboat at the site of the Showboat on March 31 starting at 11am. The days’ events will include a ceremony at 11am, lunch on the grounds, and then a few tours in the afternoon. This will be the very last day to see this piece of history before its destroyed. HRPA is asking for a small donation through their website to help cover the cost of food and storage for the artifacts preserved from the showboat. The Goldenrod was a St. Louis treasure for many years on the riverfront bringing many unique performances to the area. The celebration of life is open to the public. HRPA has preserved the interior of the Goldenrod to be placed in various museums in the St. Louis area until their planned Historic River Museum is complete.

The Historic Riverboat Preservation Association (HRPA) is a local nonprofit group working to preserve the Goldenrod Showboat into a museum in the St. Louis area.

"Truly heartbreaking” says Jacob Medford, HRPA Vice President. "I have been with this project for over 5 years and its coming down to this.”

Scientists Troubled By The Discovery Of Black Carp........

Recently, two juvenile black carp were discovered in a ditch linked to the Mississippi River near Cape Girardeau.  Scientists are concerned that the invasive species are reproducing in the wild, and becoming a threat the native species in the river.

Adult black carp have been occasionally found in the Mississippi River for some time, but November's discovery of juvenile fish amongst the hundreds caught illustrates that their population is higher than scientists previously believed.

Quinton Phelps, a resource scientist with the Missouri Department of Conservation says that scientists had believed that there weren't enough adult black carp in the river to find each other and reproduce, but they found that the carp are reproducing, and the young are surviving to a point where they are being caught........
