Hey Bill,

Watched this eagle eating a fish across cove from my place Thursday.

Also saw really big woodpecker, think it's just a pileated woodpecker, but would be cool if it turned out to be Ivory billed. Not really a bird watcher but when they're right in front of you it makes you wonder what they are.

Last pic is flock of Gray Herons.

Missouri State Highway Patrol

Bill Introduced To Undo State Patrol Merger........

Last month, Missouri State Representative Diane Franklin (R - Camdenton) introduced legislation that would reverse the 2011 merger of Missouri State's Highway Patrol and Water Patrol.

The merger is costing taxpayers approximately $900,000 more each year than when the patrols were separate.  Reportedly, arrests for intoxicated boating decreased by 61% after the merger as well.

Some officials approve if the proposal, as they are concerned with a decrease in troopers on Missouri waterways.  The measure is strongly opposed by Governor Jay Nixon........

Hannibal, Engineering Firm Nearly Ready To Present Riverfront Plans To The Public........

According to Andy Dorian, the Hannibal Parks and Recreation Department director, the city and Klingner and Associates will have several versions of draft designs for Hannibal's Riverfront ready to be revealed to the public in the next several months.

Dorian says that no matter what plan is eventually chosen, parking lot improvements, the marina, and a collapsed wall near the riverboat landing area are elements that will need attention.

About a year ago, the efforts to revitalize Hannibal's riverfront began with the formation of the Riverfront Task Force, who met to discuss ways to improve the public area along the riverfront........

Boat Maintenance

Preventing Outdrive Corrosion........

Corrosion is a fairly straightforward process, however, it's causes aboard a boat might be a bit confusing.  Corrosion, especially on aluminum, will cause coatings to no longer adhere to the material's surface.

Regular inspections of your vessel's metal components are the first step in preventing corrosion from crumbling an outdrive.  Besides bubbling paint, the first thing to check is the vessel's anodes, commonly referred to as zincs.

When two different types of metal are in contact with each other, such as an aluminum outdrive and a stainless steel prop, and then submerged in water, a weak current is generated between them. As the current flows between the components, small amounts of the aluminum are drawn to the stainless steel.  An anode attached to the aluminum outdrive "loses out" on the battery circuit, thus protecting the outdrive........

Illinois Flooding Aftermath

Officials Urge FEMA Consider Local Flooding Impact........

Congressmen from around the Riverbend have joined Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner in calling on the Federal Emergency Management Agency in considering the localized effects of the recent flooding.

Even though Illinois did not meet FEMA's population- based assistance threshold, U.S. Representatives Mike Bost, Rodney Davis, and John Shimkus are encouraging FEMA place greater weight to the localized effects of a disaster in a FEMA reform bill, which will be introduced to the House floor next week.

Davis says that the New Year's Floods have caused considerable damage to small communities across Central and Southwestern Illinois, and he is hopeful that FEMA will consider this while reviewing Governor Rauner's request........

Boat Sales

January Sees Boat Sales Decrease........

During January, the main powerboat segments saw a decrease in recreational boat sales across the U.S., following two months of double-digit growth.

Sales decreased by 6.1% to 3,292 units in the main segments, and by 6.5% to 4,542 boats industrywide, as compared to January 2014.

January is typically one of the slowest months in the industry, and Ryan Kloppe, Statistical Surveys sales director, says that it is difficult to nail down the reason sales were slower in January........

Asian Carp Update

1st Asian Carp Caught On The Minnesota River........

For the first time, an Asian bighead carp has been caught on the Minnesota River, however, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says that this does not mean that the carp have established a permanent presence in the river.

A commercial fisherman caught the 25 pound bighead carp last week near New Ulm, Minnesota.  Back in December, a grass carp was caught in the same area.

According to Nick Frohnauer, the DNR invasive fish coordinator, they have suspected that bighead carp have entered the Minnesota River occasionally from the Mississippi River, but this is the first time a bighead carp has been caught in the Minnesota River........

Volunteers Sought For Christmas Tree Recycling Program........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Carlyle Lake is calling for volunteers to assist with their annual Christmas Tree recycling/fish habitat improvement project, which will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2016.

The Corps has rounded up more than 1,000 discarded Christmas trees, which will be repurposed as fish reef structures and placed into Carlyle Lake.  These structures will offer breeding areas and protection for young fish.

The volunteers will be needed to help construct the tree reefs, assist with placing the tree reefs, or by supplying boats to place the trees into the lake........

The U.S. Coast Guard is supervising the cleanup of about 900 gallons of waste lube oil that spilled into the 17th Street Canal, which flows into Lake Pontchartrain.

Tuesday morning, at 10:22 am, the Coast Guard was alerted to the discharge of an unknown substance, later identified as waste lube oil, into the 17th Street Canal near Metairie, Louisiana.

The preliminary report is that the discharge was unintentional, and originated from Delta Petroleum, who has contacted an oil spill response organization to recover the spilled oil........

World Aquarium Opening At Laclede's Landing........

Leonard Sonnenschein's World Aquarium recently found a new home at Laclede's Landing after moving out of the City Museum back in September.

The new location is between the Morgan Street Brewery and Nelly's Extreme Institute.  In addition to the giant fish tanks, taxidermy, and ephemera, Sonnenschein intends to present shows on weekend evenings that include dancing girls, a Russian ballet dancer, a stand-up comedy routine, and a crocodile.

Sonnenschein also has plans in the works for a new, stand-alone aquarium.  Currently, he is finalizing land acquisition in Chouteau's Landing south of the Gateway Arch Grounds, where he intends to construct a $25 million, two story, 70,000 square foot aquarium by the summer of 2017........

Illinois & Michigan Canal Near La Salle, Illinois
Canal Aqueduct Springs A Leak, Waiting For Repair........

The 96 mile long Illinois & Michigan Canal was designed with four aqueducts, which carry the canal over streams linked to the nearby Illinois River.  The steel trough aqueduct over the Little Vermillion River near La Salle has sprung a leak.

The leak is significant, and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources is trying to determine how to plug it.  Dan Bell, site superintendant for the Illinois & Michigan Canal says that they don't know how big the leak is, nor how much repairs will cost.

The canal system was constructed between 1836 and 1848, and was intended to facilitate river shipping between Chicago and the navigable portion of the Illinois River.  The canal closed in 1933, and was replaced by locks on the Illinois River, and the Chicago Sanitary ad Ship Canal........

Mississippi River Near Alton, Illinois
Crews Are Working On Relief Wells........

Crews are using heavy equipment to dig near Illinois Route 143 in order to protect the integrity of the adjacent levee.  According to Rene Poche, chief of public affairs for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District, relief wells are being installed to replace damaged or deficient wells in order to maintain the Mel Price Interim Operations Plan.

Poche says that the new relief wells will replace older wells damaged during previous flooding events, and are no longer performing at the appropriate level.

Back in 2009, the Corps discovered sand boils in the levee, which allow water and sand form the Mississippi River to leak under the Wood River Levee.  The Corps says some seepage is normal, but not if it contains sand.  If the Corps did not act to ease the water pressure on the levee, it could fail........

Boat Propulsion
Gasoline Sterndrives Still Viable........

Over the past decade, the sales of sterndrive-propelled boats decreased, and the builders of these vessels have shifted their production with the market.

Around five years ago, some major marine manufacturers started shifting toward outboard power.  In 2010, Bayliner's offerings were 90% sterndrives, but by 2015, only about a third were powered by sterndrives.

Despite the shift, the major boat builders remain committed to sterndrives.  In fact, sales of sterndrive-powered vessels over 25 feet have increased........

Aldermen Discuss Riverfront, Riverboat Cruises........

On Tuesday, Davenport aldermen discussed ideas for the riverfront, after the Rhythm City Casino closes.  The city seems interested in tapping into tourism linked to the Mississippi River.

Early this summer, the casino will be leaving the riverfront, and the city needs to look into what will continue to draw tourists to the riverfront.  One option is to bring them in by boat.

Davenport Mayor Frank Klipsch says that he hopes that the city will have a beautiful riverfront, and people can head down to the riverfront and see three or four riverboats arriving and leaving Davenport........

Recovery From Flooding Continues At Soccer Park........

In late December, the Meramec River overflowed it's banks, causing historic flooding in the southern St. Louis County region.  The soccer park in Fenton was one of the casualties of the flooding.

The artificial turf from the soccer park's Field 5 ended up wadded up in the parking lot, despite weighing 400,000 pounds.  Grant Finley, the soccer park's communications manager says that the floodwaters rolled the turf up like a rug.

Removal of the sodden, ruined turf is part of the ongoing flood clean up.  Officials believe that the soccer park will be ready to be reopened in April 16, when the pro Saint Louis Football Club team starts their second season........
