Bill:
Even though Little John is doing a great job restoring the old wood race boat don't you think one of us ought to tell him he has to wait for the river to thaw before he takes it out? Or at least ask the owner if he can drive it? It sure is looking good! He has a bunch of pictures of the restoration and will get them to you soon.

Crews Removing Boone Bridge From The River........

After the recent blast marking the start of the demolition of the old Boone Bridge, the first section ended up in the Missouri River, with the trusses sticking out of the water, mostly intact.

Crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation are working on cutting the trusses into 30 foot sections, allowing them to be plucked from the river with a crane.

So far, only the St. Louis County section of the old Boone Bridge was brought down.  Another blast will be scheduled in the weeks to come to bring down the remainder of the bridge........

Residents:  Flood Damage Caused By Power, Pump Shut-Offs........

Some Arnold residents believe that the flood damage their homes suffered was not caused by the December's historic rainfall, but rather the decision to shut off the power and sewage pumps.

Reportedly, the power was shut off, rendering sump pumps inoperative, resulting in sewage backing up into basements.  According to Arnold City Administrator, Bryan Richardson, the city does not have the authority to shut off power, or stop sewage pumping.

Recently, the City of Arnold sold the sewer system to Missouri American Water Co..  Richardson said that Amren's decision to shut off the electricity was discussed with officials with the city and fire department........

Boatsetter, Jason Taylor Teams Up With Make-A-Wish........

Blast Removed First Section Of The Old Boone Bridge........

At 10:09 am Thursday, the first of two blasts went off, bringing down a section of the former westbound span of the Boone Bridge.  Parts of the bridge landed in the Missouri River, where crews used cranes to collect the debris.

Construction work on the new span started in January 2013.  The eastbound span opened in June, and the 1980s-era bridge was rehabbed, and opened to westbound traffic........

Lower Mississippi River

Early Floods Leave Sediment Behind........

Early flooding along the Mississippi River carried huge amounts of sediment downstream, depositing it in critical navigational channels along the lower river.

The additional sediment load in the Mississippi River has reduced the recommended draft for vessels transiting the main navigational channel of the Southwest Pass.

As a result, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is calling for dredging operations to commence earlier than usual in order to keep the waterways open........

Alton Amphitheater Planning Concerts........

This summer, there will be plenty of concerts at the Liberty Bank Alton Amphitheater, however, the Alton Amphitheater Commission doesn't know what bands will be performing, or when they will go on.

Commissioner Robert Stephan said that the St. Louis event planner/concert booker, Evntiv, will need to determine what acts will be available, what acts would play an outdoor venue like the amphitheater, the cost, and the dates they would be available.

Stephan says that they still have to decide if there will be two or three city sponsored concerts.  For the second year, there will be a food truck festival at Riverfront Park, near the Amphitheater and Alton Marina, and the fireworks show will be held on July 3........

Missouri River Near Bismarck, North Dakota

The Level Of The Missouri River Is Falling........

Earlier in the week, the water level of the Missouri River near Bismarck, North Dakota had some people a bit concerned.  The river rose to 12.7 feet, well within the National Weather Service's action stage, which means people need to prepare for flooding.

Now, the level of the Missouri River is below 10 feet and falling.  The U.S. Geological Survey says that this is normal for this time of year.

Warmer temperatures has caused ice floes to melt, which forces the river to rise.  More moderate temperatures are in the forecast, so the USGS expects the trend to continue........

Repair Project Offers Look At Empty Lock........

This week, over 10 million gallons of water was pumped out of Lock and Dam No.13 at Fulton, Illinois, allowing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to inspect the aging infrastructure.

Approximately every 20 years, the locks are dewatered so that crews can inspect the gates, valves, concrete, and all other parts of the lock.

Matt Thurman, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says that the majority of the lock's inner workings are submerged 365 days per year, so an accurate assessment of the equipment is not possible until the water is removed........

Flooding Brought FEMA, EPA To Times Beach........

For several weeks, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency have been working on cleaning up flood debris at the former Times Beach site in West St. Louis County.

Wilt, commanding officer of Troop B, Macon, announces a boater safety certification course will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Saturday, March 12, 2016, at the Mark Twain Lake Visitor Center, 21629 Highway J, Perry, Missouri. There is no fee for this course; however, students are required to pre-register online as seating will be limited. Participants are encouraged to bring a snack or sack lunch to the training. For more information, to register for the course, or to obtain a complete listing of where other courses are being offered, you may visit the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s website, www.mshp.dps.mo.gov. A Boat Safety Education & Certification link can be found on the left side of the Patrol’s home page under training. On the day of the class, the “Boat Safety Education & Certification” link will provide the announcement if the course is canceled due to an insufficient number of participants.

Missouri law requires any person born after January 1, 1984, to carry a boater safety education certification card along with a picture ID anytime they operate a vessel, which includes personal watercraft, on Missouri lakes. Participants who successfully pass the course will be eligible to order a boater safety certification card for $15.

Boat Left By New Year's Flood Is A Bit Of A Mystery........

The Mississippi County Sherriff's Department is searching for the owner of a houseboat that is a bit of an mystery, as is ended up in a farm field close to Moore's Landing.

According to Mississippi County Sheriff Keith Moore, witnesses saw a man and a dog living on the vessel during the New Year's Flood.  When the water receded, the boat became grounded.  Officials headed to the vessel, only to find it empty.

The vessel may have been stolen, but there are no numbers on the hull.  The vessel has "Southern Cross" and "Portage Des Sioux, Mo" spelled out on the starboard side of the stern.  According to the news article, My River Home Boat Harbor in Portage Des Sioux is not familiar with the vessel, but they are looking to see who may own it........

Snow Melt, Ice Jam Force River Levels Up........

Monday morning, the Missouri River in Bismarck was at 12.72 feet, the highest it has been since July 1, 2011, when it reached 19.25 feet.

The difference is that in 2011, the high river levels were due to water releases from the Garrison Dam.  This year, there is some ice formation and a few days worth off snow melt.

The National Weather Service is reporting that snow melt, and an ice jam near the Memorial Bridge has caused the river level to rise to 2 - 3 feet below flood stage........

Pacific Won't Ask For FEMA Buyout........

Although the Coty of Pacific, Missouri saw extensive damage stemming from the December flooding, they do not intend to request FEMA buyout the affected properties.

Pacific Mayor Jef Palmore says that he is hopeful that residents and businesses will want to remain in the city.  He notes that if buyouts caused a decrease in the population, the ax base would shrink, and the city would be forced to maintain the properties.

Since a buyout isn't an option, the City of Pacific is looking to assist it's residents in other ways.  Residents may turn off their water at no charge, and turn it back on when the home is ready for moving back in........

River History....

16 February 1854 in River History

Competition between the boat lines brought about the beginning of racing by the captains. The first boat to come into port was given first chance to unload and to be the first to get away to pick up freight at the next stop. This made it necessary to build faster boats.

Houses were built with lookouts on top making it possible for the people to watch the racing steamers coming into dock. The boats were loaded with freight and crowded with passengers who felt lucky to be aboard during the race.

The townspeople came to the riverfront and cheered as the speeding boats entered the Alton port. The prize was a set of gold covered antlers, which were placed in the pilot house until some other boat defeated the champion.

The boat racing continued until a tragic accident happened. On February 16, 1854, the steamer "Kate Kearney" blew up as she was pulling away from the crowded wharf at St . Louis. Fifty people were killed and twenty-five were badly injured. Some of the passengers and crew were blown into the river and lost. Newspaper criticism of the races and government action brought an end to the reckless races on the Mississippi

Vicksburg Working To Save Eroding Bluff Top Park........

Officials in Vicksburg, Mississippi are hopeful that the removal of some dirt will arrest a landslide that is eating away at one of the city's most popular parks.

Vicksburg and Warren County officials made the call on Friday, following a report on Riverfront Park.  Last April, a portion of the park started to collapse, taking out a fence, a walking trail, and threatening a playground.

According to Eddie Templeton, an engineer, water from a leaky water line caused the landslide.  The water line has since been repaired, which seems to have stopped the landslide........

Levee District, Port Authority Agree On Dike........

Following several meetings over recent weeks, the board of the New Bourbon Regional Port Authority and the Levee District No.2 agreed to construct a temporary dike at a levee that broke during the New Year's Flooding near St. Mary, Missouri.

When the levee broke, water poured into an agricultural field, and headed toward St. Mary.  The Mississippi River crested at 45.99 feet in New Year's Day.

The dike is intended to prevent possible spring flooding.  If the levee is not in place the river might continue to flow toward Kaskaskia, and the old river channel close to St. Mary........

The snag that sunk the Arabia in 1856

Missouri River Near Kansas City, Kansas

Artifacts From The Steamboat Arabia........

While Trolling The Internet........  We reeled in some photos of the excavation of the Steamboat Arabia, and the artifacts found aboard.  The Arabia sank in the Missouri River in 1856, after striking a walnut tree which pierced the hull.  She was laden with 200 tons of supplies for 16 towns.

Over the years, the Missouri River shifted it's course about a half mile to the east. In 1988 the Arabia was discovered in 45 feet below the surface of a Kansas farm field.  The farm owner gave searchers permission to excavate, with the condition that it be wrapped up by the time that spring planting season came around.

Eventually, the entire Steamboat Arabia was dug up, along with her cargo.  Thanks to the river mud being an effective natural preserver, many of the buried artifacts were unearthed in remarkably goof condition........
