As the temperature drops there is a lot of ice is forming in Dardenne Slough of the Mississippi River today.  The pieces small than 9.8 feet in diameter are called "pancake ice."  Some of the Pancake Ice is starting to form together into lager pieces.

Did you know....  Because ice is less dense than water, it floats on the surface.

Flooding News

Flood Risk May Be Higher With Levees Than Without........

According to the results of a study performed by the University of California, Davis, people that live behind levees in floodplains might not be as safe from flooding as they believe.

While levees typically prevent loss of life and flood damage, if the levees fail, or are overtopped and water pours into the floodplain, the long-term damage could be much worse than if the levees were not present.

The study estimated the long-term flood risks, the probabilities of levee failures, as well as the resulting economic osses in the Sny Island levee district along the Mississippi River in Illinois and Missouri........

RiverBill says.... Stop building Levees and stop repairing them when the break. Let the Flood Plains be Flood Plains and a lot of our flooding problems will go away !

Mississippi River Management

The Effect Of Recent Flooding On Dredging........

The Mississippi River links together 31 states, and two Canadian Provinces, and includes more than 250 tributaries.  It embodies the rich history of our country, and is a critical liquid superhighway for commodities to make their way to market.

Unfortunately, the infrastructure along the river, namely the locks and dams, are deteriorating, and the dredging that is necessary for maintaining navigable channels is not being completed.

Many may assume that during times of flooding, there is no need for dredges to recover the channel, but one place this is not true is the critical Southwest Pass........

Sangamon River Near Beardstown, Illinois

Logjam Changes Course Of The Sangamon River........

A logjam has occurred along the Sangamon River, approximately 2 miles from it's confluence with the Illinois River near Beardstown, Illinois.

The jam consists of about a half mile of logs and debris, spanning the Sangamon River.  It began to develop a few years ago, and has been growing ever since.

A logjam in that area of the Sangamon River is nothing new, as a 7 mile long one occurred in the 1940s.  To combat it, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dug a new channel for the river, taking it west toward Beardstown.  Ironically, the current logjam is forcing water closer to the old river channel near Browning, Illinois........

Boat Sales

Beware Of Boat Selling Scams........

For as long as mankind has been engaging in commerce, there has been unscrupulous people trying to separate unsuspecting folks from their their money.

Recently, BoatUS Consumer Protection received a report from a BoatUS member who was trying to sell his sailboat online, but had a feeling that all was not as it seemed.

BoatUS listed some red flags to watch for, including:

○  Offers to send a cashier's check for more than the purchase price.

○  The buyer not being interested in inspecting the vessel.

○  Buyers/banks/shippers located in different locations.

○  Communications through an odd-sounding email address.

○  Demands for fast payment.

Tige Boats Reports 50% Sales Increase Last Month........

During the month of January, the Tige Dealer Network set a new record for retail boat sales, by delivering an increase of 50% in sales.  Charlie Pigeon, CEO and founder of Tige Boats says that 2016 has begun with Tige in a strong, competitive position.

Pigeon adds that the demand for the vessels Tige builds is satisfying the market's needs, and continuing to bring customerrs to Tige.

Tige believes that two strong factors driving the record setting sales are the recently released RZX and the TAPS 3 Surf System, with the Surf Link Remote........

NMMA:  Engine Shipments Increase........

U.S. outboard engine wholesale shipments increased 3.1% year over year through January, on a rolling 12 month basis.  The increases were led by higher powered outboards, and four strokes.

This figure is from the National Marine Manufactures Association's control group of manufacturers, representing 95% of the market.

The NMMA says that based on warranty card registrations, total sales for the same period increased by 7.7 percent........

 Hey Bill,

Happy to see they let you back into the country. Is there any Red Stripe or Appleton left in Jamaica? Ha mon! Hope to see ya soon.

Wanted to say congratulations to Andy, Donna and "MRHYC" crew! Can't wait to see what they do. I'm sure they'll bring the old PYC back to a place that everyone can enjoy and be proud of.

We found a couple of pictures from 2010 at PYC of us wearing our River Bill's shirts and drinkin' Corona's on the dock under a River Bill's banner (wonder where that came from?)

On the river. Life doesn't get any better!  Ha mon.

The Ohio River Is The Gateway To The West........

The swiftly moving, rocky bottomed Ohio River takes mountain waters from the eastern Appalachian uplands travels on a 981 mile trip southwest through six states until it's confluence with the Mississippi River at Cairo, Illinois.

The Ohio River originates at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  It was here that Meriwether Lewis had his boat built prior to attempting to find the Pacific Ocean, via the Ohio, Mississippi, and Missouri Rivers.

Nowadays, pleasure craft, fishing boats, and modern barges navigate the Ohio River, but in 1803, Meriwether Lewis took to the Ohio River to begin his efforts to map the Northwest Passage, and in 1842, Charles Dickens took a trip along the Ohio River, which he described in the travelogue, American Notes........

Corps' Decision Disappoints Congresswoman.........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has defied the Port of Cleveland's calls to stop dumping sediment dredged from the Cuyahoga River into Lake Erie, gravely disappointing Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge.

Fudge states that the dumping of potentially harmful sediment into Lake Erie is unacceptable, and has to be stopped, as the lake supports thousands of jobs, contributed more than a $1 billion to the local economy, and provides millions of people with drinking water.

In November 2015, Fudge and several other members of Congress sent a letter to the U.S. Army  Corps of Engineers supporting the Port of Cleveland's plan modifications that would permanently halt the dumping of dredge spoils into Lake Erie........

On March 13, another free lecture, "Who Were Cahokia's Immigrants" will be presented by Kristin Hedman, from the Illinois State Archaeology Survey.  Hedman's research suggests that approximately a third of Cahokia's residents were not native to the region........

Divers Inspect The Wastewater Plant........

On Saturday, two divers were sent into the Fenton Wastewater Treatment plant clarifying tank in order to look for debris and evidence of any damage.

Reportedly, draining the tanks for inspection was not a viable option, so sending divers into the tanks was the best way to perform the inspection.

The wastewater treatment plant has been off-line since December, so crews have been working around the clock to make repairs.  Officials intend to have the plant up and running by March........

A Logjam Has Restricted The River........

For this week's edition of KSDK's Our Beautiful City series, Heidi Glaus and photojournalist Randy Schwentker set out to answer the question, "What are those castles in the Mississippi River?".

In the middle of the Mississippi River, just downstream of the Chain of Rocks Bridge, stands two stone structures resembling castles.  Curt Skouby, director of public utilities says that the structures are water intake towers.

Intake water tower No.1 is located closer to the Missouri shoreline, and was constructed in the early 1890's.  Intake water tower No.2 was built between 1913 and 1915.  While they look different on the outside, their layout is similar on the inside........

Proposed Riverfront Project Features Lighthouse........

The St. Louis Planning Commission recently voted to change the city's Land Use Plan in order to allow a new riverfront project near the Chain of Rocks Bridge to proceed.  The proposal is called Lighthouse St. Louis, and construction may begin as soon as the summer.

The proposed development would be constructed on a half mile of open land along the Mississippi River, just north of the Chain of Rocks bridge.  A lighthouse will be the development's distinctive feature.

Adam Hartig, a retail developer hired by the property owners says that the lighthouse is still in the design stages.  Hartig added that he envisions an operating lighthouse, perhaps 60 feet tall, with some type of lighting feature at the top to draw some attention to it........

BoatUS is Celebrating 50th Anniversary

ALEXANDRIA, Va., February 3, 2016 – In 1966, boaters could buy a new mid-sized cruiser for about $7,000, outboard engines had just surpassed 100 horsepower, and recreational boating was growing on a large scale across America. It was also in ’66 that the nation’s largest recreational boating group, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS), got its start thanks to Founder Richard Schwartz who saw a need to make recreational boaters’ lives better.

His vision of offering representation, improving safety, providing quality services at competitive prices and saving boaters money was all rolled up into the “service, savings and representation” motto that remains at the core of the more than half million member organization today.

“BoatUS has always been there for boaters and always will be,” said BoatUS President Margaret Podlich. “Whether it’s helping boaters have a safe day on the water, ensuring that boating taxes go to boating programs, offering competitive boat insurance coverage, or having the largest on water towing fleet in the nation, BoatUS is proudly the single source of exceptional service and savings. We’re steadfast in our commitment to protect boaters and their rights, making boating safer, more affordable and accessible.”

BoatUS will be celebrating its golden anniversary in 2016 with a series of special member events and coverage in its flagship publication, BoatUS Magazine, and other programs.
