Heya Bill,

Dozens of eagles and thousands of seagulls are feasting on the fish that were frozen in the ice here in Portage DS. Suppose to be really warm this weekend, should be perfect for people to come up to watch the eagles

.
Spring is just around the corner. You still owe me a boat ride.

The River Spree

The Spree (German pronunciation: [ˈʃpʁeː]; Sorbian: Sprjewja, Czech: Spréva) is a river that flows through the Saxony, Brandenburg and Berlin states of Germany, and in the Ústí nad Labem region of the Czech Republic. Approximately 400 kilometres (250 mi) in length, it is a left bank tributary of the River Havel, which itself flows into the Elbe and then the North Sea. It is the river on which the original centre of Berlin was built.

Large Port Proposed For Lincoln County........

Back in September, plans for a port project along the Mississippi River near Winfield, Missouri, were released.

The project, called the Port of Lincoln, would encompass 6,500 acres adjacent to the river, and would include a barge facility, highway and rail connections, as well as an airport.

Reportedly, several industry observers say that they have not heard much about the proposal.  The director of the Mississippi River Cities and Towns Initiative, Colin Wellenkamp said that he was not aware of the Port of Lincoln proposal, but added that there were many proposals for barge facilities in the works........

Mississippi River Near Alexander County, Illinois

Budget Woes Mean More Flood Damage Prior To Buyouts........

There are dozens of southern Illinois residents still waiting for new housing after agreeing to federal buyouts after the flooding of 2011.  These residents have been hit with another round of flooding and damage while a political battle brews over Illinois' budget.

Officials in Alexander County believe that several dozen homes that were approved for buyouts during the spring sustained more damage during the recent winter flooding.  Approximately a dozen of these homes were occupied at that time.

Back in June, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources put a buyout program in which the state would provide a 9% match to $9 million in funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency on hold.........

Officials:  Stay Out Of The Meramec River Downstream Of Fenton........

Officials with the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District issued a warning for people to stay out of the Meramec River, downstream of Fenton.

The MSD's Fenton sewage treatment plant remains out of service due to the recent record flooding.  It continues to release untreated sewage into the river, and will continue to do so until it has been repaired.

MSD is concerned that with warmer temperatures in the forecast, people may have the desire to hit the water.  The district is encouraging that those who come in contact with the Meramec River between Fenton and the Mississippi River wash with soap and water........

Eagle Watching Events Along The Mississippi River........

Tens of thousands of people head for the Mississippi River to participate in Bald Eagle Watches, hoping to catch a glimpse of our national symbol.

There are around 2,500 bald eagles that winter along the Mississippi River, close to the locks and dams, where the turbulence below these dams provides open water, and plenty of stunned fish for the to feast on.

There are plenty of eagle watching events planned throughout January and February, but eagles may be seen from the middle of December, through early March........

The Clark Bridge

at Sunset

Click pic to enlarge

RiverBills Pictures of the Day ....... was sent to us by Mary Tiemann who hails out of Camp Carl on Wilson Road Slough.

Mary sent us this picture back in late November.  It's a Clark Bridge at Sunset taken from aboard the HMS Destiny.

From Wikipedia Encyclopedia

The Clark Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge across the Mississippi River between West Alton, Missouri and Alton, Illinois. Named after explorer William Clark like the bridge it replaced, the cable-stayed bridge opened in 1994. It carries U.S. Route 67 across the river. It is the northernmost river crossing in the Saint Louis metropolitan area.

The new $85 million, 108-foot-wide bridge (33 m) replaced the old Clark Bridge, which was only 20 ft wide (6.1 m).[1] The truss bridge was built in 1928. The new bridge carries two lanes of divided traffic in each direction, as well as two bike lanes. The old bridge carried only two lanes (similar to the upstream Champ Clark Bridge).

The bridge is sometimes referred to as the Super Bridge. Its construction was featured in a NOVA documentary entitled Super Bridge, which highlighted the challenges of building the bridge, especially during the Great Flood of 1993. Designed by Hanson Engineers under contract to Illinois Department of Transportation (DOT), the Clark Bridge was the first in the United States in which "such a light steel-framed cable-stayed design was combined with a cable saddle type of pylon."[2] The bridge used 8,100 tons of structural steel; 44,100 cubic yards of concrete; and more than 160 miles of cable wrapped with four acres of yellow plastic piping.[3]

Missouri Flooding Aftermath

Public Tab For Missouri Flooding $56 Million....  And Counting....

Wednesday, director of the Missouri Department of Transportation, Patrick McKenna, advised that the House Budget Committee that public cost of the recent flooding is at $56 million and counting.

McKenna says that his staff is continuing to add up the costs, and the costs may go up.  The Missouri Department of Transportation intends to get disaster reimbursement from the Federal Highway Administration to help pay these expenses.

This request for funds is different from Governor Jay Nixon's recent appeal  for federal assistance.  McKenna's request will cover damage to major highways, while Nixon's funding request would be for local roads and streets........

Sewage Plant Back On-Line, Fenton's Still Down........

Wednesday, officials with the Metropolitan Sewer District announced that the Grand Glaize sewage treatment plant in Valley Park was back to operating at full capacity.

Unfortunately, sewage that would usually be treated at the MSD plant in Fenton will be flowing into the Meramec River untreated for the next several months.

According to MSD Executive Director, Brian Hoelscher, the Fenton Treatment Plant saw worse flooding and more damage than the Grand Glaize treatment plant........

Kansas Man Catches Missouri Record Gizzard Shad........

The Missouri Department of Conservation recently reported that Fort Scott, Kansas resident, Shane Doherty set the first Missouri state fishing record of 2016 by reeling in a 2 pound, 2 ounce gizzard shad.

Doherty caught the fish, measuring 19 and 13/16 inches with a line and pole on January 8 at a private strip pit in Vernon County, Missouri.  The previous record gizzard shad weighed 1 pound, 14 ounces, and was caught in 2015.

Gizzard shad are found in large, constantly moving schools close to the water's surface. They often jump clear of the water, skipping along the surface, which earned them the name skipjack........

Asbestos Slip-Up May Cost Arch Project Delays, $350K........

Work on the Gateway Arch's underground museum has resumed following the exposure of asbestos piping, however, officials with the National Park Service believe that the month-long work stoppage may add weeks to the schedule, and about $350,000 to the bottom line.

On November 3, workers with contractor, McCarthy Building Companies cut into asbestos insulation wrapped around an old steam pipe, causing a work stoppage and an evacuation of the work site.  Apparently, the same pipe had been cut a month prior as well.

According to Kathy Schneider, project manager for the park service, removing asbestos from a building is fairly routine.  Work is halted, the area is sealed, the asbestos is removed, and work resumes typically in a few days.  The first cut on this pipe was unknown, meaning that the whole work site had been contaminated........

Port Authority:  Luckily, Flooding Receded Quickly........

The Mississippi River flooding near Cape Girardeau interrupted barge work as well as rail traffic at the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority.  Thankfully, the recovery time was brief.

Several parts of the port were affected by the flooding.  Northbound railroads were stopped until the water receded, and debris could be removed from the tracks.  Barge traffic at the port was affected as well.  Several barge management companies had to stop shipping for at least a week.

After the floodwaters dissipated, barges were able to travel through to offload grain, fertilizer, and steel coils once again........

Look what I spotted on a satellite map from "maps.here.com."  It's the USS Inaugural resting on it's side just south of the Popular Street Bridge along the St, Louis downtown riverfront.

From Wikapedia...

"The Inaugural was launched on 1 October 1944, and was commissioned on 30 December, with Lieutenant John H. Pace USNR in command.

The ship was decommissioned in 1946 and set up as a museum ship in St. Louis, Missouri in 1968. In the flood of 1993, Inaugural was ripped from her mooring and grounded a mile downstream."

Coldwater Creek Near Florissant, Missouri

Feds To Study Link Between Creek And Cancer........

A new federal study is looking for a correlation between cancer cases in northern St. Louis County and radioactive contamination in Coldwater Creek, which is a tributary of the Missouri River.

Radioactive waste from the processing of uranium was dumped near the creek from the 1940s, through the 1960s.  A 2015 study found higher instances of cancer in the neighborhoods close to the creek.

The contamination from the creek is thought to have been spread by the flooding and redevelopment that has changed the path of the creek channel.  The water is not believed to contaminated any more, some soil samples have contaminations below the surface........

Musical Set On The Mississippi River Debuts........

The Repertory Theater of St. Louis has announced the world premiere of the musical, Georama, which is about the first three mile long painting celebrating the magnificence of the Mississippi River.

Artist John Banvard created the first georama in the mid 19th century.  The production documents Banvard's rise and fall, and the artist's struggle between the art he loved, and the life he always wanted.

A key part of the musical is an actual 660 foot long "georama", that will be scrolled through a series of hand-painted scenes. The musical will run through February 7 in the Emerson Studio Theater of the Loretto-Hilton Center for the Performing Arts........

Bill,

Photo taken Saturday, Jan 23, 2010 at My Lady of the Rivers next to Palisades. The forecast calls for rain this afternoon, but it was beautiful this morning. The river takes on a whole different feel in the calm of a cool winter fog. The ice was breaking apart and we watched it drift down river. The gulls were singing and feasting on a bounty of fish breaking over the dike. God willing, I will remember this day at Blessing of the Fleet later this year.

Man Drowns Flying Drones With His Son........

Saturday evening, 54 year old Mark A. Miller fell through the ice on a pond near the Low Water Dam on Chouteau Island.  His body was recovered early Sunday morning.

Miller had been flying drones with his son, when one of them malfunctioned and crashed onto the pond.  He sent his 11 year old son to wait in the car while he retrieved the drone.

The boy waited in the car for three hours, until the vehicle ran out of gas.  He then began walking along W. Chain of Rocks road for help.  A passing motorist picked up the boy and took him to the Madison Sheriff's Department substation........

Area Ferry Roads Named For Former Ferry Operations........

Lemay Ferry, Tesson Ferry and Dougherty Ferry are all names of roads in south St. Louis County, but their names come from working ferry operations starting in the 1830s.

According to Danny Gonzales, St. Louis County's official historian, not much is known about the Doughertys, but considerably more is known about Lemay Ferry.

The first ferry license for that area was granted to Louis Trudeau in 1833.  Then on May 5, 1834, Francois Lemay was granted a ferry license.  Lemay was a less than ideal ferry operator, often being late, or not showing up at all.

In 1848, Noah H. Whitmore petitioned the St. Louis County Courts, and was allowed to take over the Lemay Ferry license........

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon recently visited the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority to discuss why he wants an additional $5 million in the 2017 budget to expand ports in Missouri.

Nixon says that the ports are gateways to the world, and they are crucial to utilizing the rivers as an economical way to move what we produce to market, especially agricultural commodities.
