Mississippi River Flooding Aftermath

Clean-Up Efforts Slowed By Chilly Temperatures........

While the historic New Year's flooding has gone, the work has just begun for the property owners affected by the floodwaters.

The roads around Cape Girardeau have reopened, and the floodgates were slated to be removed on Monday.  Across the river in Alexander County, Illinois, the roads have reopened, however, the water is still present in many yards.

Some residents are slow to work on cleaning up their properties, as they are waiting to see if there is an opportunity to relocate.  Another reason for waiting to work on the properties is the extremely cold temperatures........

Use Caution Around Water........

Right now, the Missouri State Highway Patrol is calling for people to be extra vigilant around the waterways around the region.

The Highway Patrol is recommending that people be more mindful of hypothermia and ice safety, as the human body loses heat up to 25 times faster in water than in air.

Caution is also encouraged when removing ice and snow from docks during inclement weather, as accidently ending up in the water is fairly easy.........

The Loading Dock's Ice Rink Has Reopened........

Recently, there was up to five feet of the Mississippi River inside The Loading Dock's Ice Rink, but on Saturday, they were ready to reopen for business.

Mississippi River Management

The Pros And Cons Of River Management........

The recent flooding has renewed criticism from people claiming that walling off the rivers with levees, and paving over the flood plains have caused the severity of floods to increase, and it will get worse as more development pops up along the waterways.

Bob Criss, a geology professor at Washington University says that the frequency and severity of major flooding events are primarily caused by bad river management practices.  He adds that the flood levels are several feet higher than ever seen before.

Officials in Cape Girardeau say that the levee system has protected property, and the previous buyouts of properties within the flood-prone areas has further reduced the likelihood of damage........

Coast Guard Starts Icebreaking Efforts In The Western Great Lakes........

On Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste Marie started Operation Taconite in response to the increased ice growth in the commercial ports of Lake Superior, the Lower St. Marys River, and Green Bay.

The Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw was recently dispatched to assist a pair of vessels in the Port of Green Bay, and the Coast Guard Cutter Alder was sent to handle ice breaking duties in Western Lake Superior, primarily the twin ports of Duluth, Minnesota, and Superior, Wisconsin.

As ice continues to form over the Great Lakes, more ice breakers will be assigned to Operation Taconite, which is the Coast Guard's largest domestic icebreaking operation.  It includes Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, the St. Marys River, the Straits of Mackinac, and Georgian Bay........

About a year ago, there were several plans in the works to deal with the huge Asian carp problem in the Illinois River.

Fast forward to today, and all of those proposals have changed, died, or faded away.  Kevin Irons, the aquaculture and aquatic nuisance species program manager for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources says that there are still discussions about how best to deal with the carp problem........

North Riverfront Development To Proceed, Minus The Stadium........

Since the St. Louis Rams are heading back to Los Angeles, St. Louis officials are saying that plans are in the works to develop the north riverfront without the stadium.

Headed up by the Great Rivers Greenway and three county parks and trails districts, an effort is underway to redevelop several blocks of the riverfront, north of the soon-to-be renovated Gateway Arch Grounds to the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge.

Design work has begun, and will start off with parks and public space, that will hopefully draw private funding to bring life to the northern riverfront all year long, not just during the home games of a football season........

Corps Open More Bonnet Carre Spillway Bays.......

On Thursday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers worked to control the level of the Mississippi River by opening 10 more bays in the Bonnet Carre Spillway as the river continued to rise.

At this time, 90 of the 350 bays in the Bonnet Carre Spillway structure have been opened, allowing 91,800 cubic feet of water per second to flow form the Mississippi River into Lake Pontchartrain.

The idea is to keep the flow of the Mississippi River at New Orleans no higher than 1.25 million cubic feet per second, which is roughly 17 feet.  Thursday morning, the river was at 16.6 feet, and expected to reach 17 feet by Friday........
