from Wikipedia encyclopedia

Oxbow Lake.....
An oxbow lake is a U-shaped body of water that forms when a wide meander from the main stem of a river is cut off, creating a free-standing body of water. This landform is so named for its distinctive curved shape, resembling the bow pin of an oxbow.

Grafton Working On Getting Back To Normal........

On Saturday, workers and volunteers were working to make repairs to several businesses, and clean up the mess left behind by the recent floodwaters.

Grafton's Police Chief, Marshall Lewis says that as of Saturday, all of Grafton's streets are open, and the majority of the businesses that operate at this time of the year, are open for business.

Lewis said that the situation in Grafton is good, all things considered.  He adds that there is some work yet to be done, including the removal of mud.  He adds that the mudslide near the marina will likely take a few months to completely clear........

Midwest Flooding Aftermath

Some Call For Re-Evaluation Of River Guidelines And Policies........

Heavy rainfall last month in the Midwest led to rapidly rising rivers, widespread flooding, causing roadway closures, the inundation of water treatment plants and setting new record crests.

In light of this, there are those who are questioning the policies and guidelines for managing the waterways, which were drawn up decades ago.  It is even being suggested that those regulations be re-written.

Over the years, development within the flood plain has caused the rivers to be reduced to a narrow channel, walled in by levees.  This causes the river level to rise, as opposed to spreading out over the flood plains........

The Delta Queen Riverboat Will Call Kimmswick Home........

The small Mississippi River town of Kimmswick, Missouri is known to "Loopers" and Inland River cruisers as home to Hoppie's Marine Service.  Soon, the town will also be known as the home port of the Delta Queen riverboat.

The Delta Queen has been out of service since 2008, thanks to a technicality involving the federal government, and has been used as a floating hotel in Chattanooga, Tennessee ever since.

This week, the re-formed Delta Queen Steamboat Company announced that their world headquarters will be located in Kimmswick, bringing more than 170 jobs to the area, as well as over $36.4 million annually........

Illegal Fill May Jeopardize County Flood Insurance........

On Thursday, the Madison County Zoning Board of Appeals was advised that the county's participation in a federal flood insurance program may be in jeopardy due to alleged illegal fill material at S&K Towing.

The business is located adjacent to Cahokia Creek, which is a tributary of the Mississippi River.  Both the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency have told the property owners that they are in violations of regulations.

Reportedly, the S&K Towing property, located just outside of Edwardsville, is filled with what looks to be asphalt and other road materials, which violates FEMA regulations.  Nearby resident Craig Cooper claims that the fill has contributed to local flooding, and threatens Cahokia Creek with tainted fill material........

Motives Of Grafton's Aldermen Questioned........

On Wednesday evening, over 150 Grafton residents attended a special meeting of the Grafton City Council.  The majority of the attendees showed support for Mayor Tom Thompson, despite demands by aldermen for an investigation into the Mayor's Office.

There were many attendees focusing their attention on the aldermen, questioning the motives behind their recent actions.  Several citizens called out Grafton aldermen Roger Crone, Jerry Bauersachs, and Flo Rowling for what they perceive as abuse of power, bullying, and looking for revenge for personal vendettas.

Residents and marina owner, Joe DeSherlia, and his daughter Laura Stemm spoke during the meeting, calling for the resignation of Bauersachs, Rowling, and Sara Carey, claiming that Bauersachs and Rowling called the Federal Emergency Management Agency to "Get Them".  Stemm says that she was told that Carey sent a representative from the city's zoning office to her property to search for violations, with the instructions to "go back until you find something"........

Illinois Flooding Aftermath

Tax Deadline Extended For Flood Victims........

On Thursday, Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner announced that the state will waive interest and penalties for taxpayers that are are unable to file or pay their taxes on time due to the recent flooding.

The interest and penalty waiver will apply to taxpayers living in the 23 disaster-declared counties for tax returns or payments due between December 23, 2015, and June 30, 2016.

Rauner said that the affected communities are dealing with severe damage caused by flooding, and now is the time for recuperating, not worrying about deadlines.........

For Immediate Release

Flooding is nothing for this 107-year-old showboat

Kampsville, IL – 01/06/2016 – While the Goldenrod’s days are numbered it has still managed to overcome a big obstacle that is giving others a lot of trouble. The 107-year-old showboat which now has a hole at the bottom of the hull is still floating through this flood. Caretakers checked on the showboat this morning and found the surprise. HRPA has been taking the historic artifacts from the showboat to be preserved in a museum in the St. Louis area. They were expecting the Goldenrod to not float and the rest of the showboat to be a complete loss to their efforts. HRPA has until April 1 to complete their preservation work on the showboat. Help is appreciated and needed.

The Historic Riverboat Preservation Association (HRPA) is a local nonprofit group working to preserve the Goldenrod Showboat into a museum in the St. Louis area.

"I can’t even explain this” says Jacob Medford, HRPA Vice President. "this showboat continues to amaze me everyday. I was expecting extensive damage since there is a break in the hull, but found it completely secure and safe from the flood waters.”

Corps Inspecting Damaged Wood River Levee.......

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is working on assessing the damage to the Metro East Levee System following the recent heavy rainfall.

The Corps found that a portion of the Wood River Levee was lost to the rain.  The section slid down 20 to 30 feet.  Residents were worried that the levee was breaking.  The Corps say that the levee did not break, and it actually held up fairly well.

Rachel Lopez, the Army Corps of Engineers levee safety program manager says that what happened was a stability failure.  The levee was built 50 years ago, and that section was made of soil that wasn't strong.  The Corps will need to rebuild the section that slid........

Beware Of Waste, Pollutants In Floodwaters........

Following several days of unrelenting rainfall, the Meramec River flooded in record fashion, knocking out two wastewater treatment plants.  This caused tens of millions of gallons of untreated wastewater to flow into the waterways.

In addition to untreated sewage, floodwater may have other things lurking in it, including fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, industrial waste, livestock waste, dead animals, spilled fuel, and toxins from railyards.

With each round of flooding, these pollutants threaten people that come in contact with the water.  Officials are advising those that must have direct contact with floodwaters make sure they are current on their tetanus shots........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers started releasing water from the Truman Dam, which has been held since the heavy rains fell in Late December.  In response, Amren Missouri opened up the spill gates at Bagnell Dam at noon on Tuesday.

As a result, Amren Missouri is encouraging Lake of the Ozark property owners, as well as those along the Osage River, to take precautionary measures, such as shutting off the electricity to docks and structures that may be affected by rising water.

Amren Missouri is also advising anglers and boaters be aware of debris and downed tree branches in the Lake that high water may be hiding........

Officials Worried About When Len Small Levee Repairs Can Begin........

After the winter flooding along the Mississippi River, the Len Small Levee in Alexander County, Illinois will need critical repairs, however, officials are worried about when work can commence.

According to David Willis, the president of the Levee District, the levee is in bad condition.  He adds that there is  a breach approximately a mile long, and it is still washing on the southern end.

The Len Small Levee begins in Fayville, and runs south along the Mississippi River for about 18 miles.  When it collapsed, towns like Olive Branch, and Miller City were exposed to rising waters........

Flooding Aftermath

Flood Victims Lacking Coverage Blame Feds........

A big question that property owners have in the wake of the recent historic flooding is "Would I be protected if my home was damaged by high water?".

Reportedly, some of the residents of Valley Park, Missouri have found out that the answer is no, and they believe the federal government is to blame.

A bit over a year ago, the Federal Emergency Management Agency had determined that several Valley Park properties were not in the flood plain, and didn't require flood insurance.........

Mississippi River Flooding Aftermath

Alton Mayor:  Preparation, Levee Key To Flood Fight........

Alton Mayor, Brant Walker was joined on a conference call with Danny Brown, Mayor of New Madrid, Missouri and Harry Rediger, Mayor of Cape Girardeau, Missouri to discuss the after effects of the recent flooding.

All three towns were able to dodge catastrophic devastation on account of preparing for this type of disaster.  Danny Brown said that being proactive in these situations is considerably better than just being reactive.

Mayor Brant Walker said that the majority of the Alton area was spared from the flash flood-like rise of the Mississippi River thanks to the recently renovated levee system.  Walker added that only the casino and the marina were closed, leaving the downtown businesses open........

Levees Could Be Causing More Flooding........

Richard Knaup, the emergency management director for Cape Girardeau County says that the Mississippi River is flooding more than it used to, and at higher levels.  Knaup believes that he knows why.

Knaup says that before levees were built, the river ran wild, spreading out between the river bluffs.  Now, man has tried to tame the river, and Old Man River, and Mother Nature will fight back.

Experts are pointing to development, in the form of pavement increasing the runoff into streams and rivers, and levees, which hem in the rivers in an attempt to protect homes and businesses........

Millions Of Gallons Of Sewage Still Flows Into The River........

Each day, approximately 20 million gallons of sewage is flowing into the Meramec River watershed as the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District tries to get tow flooded water treatment plants operating again.

The larger of the two plants, MSD's Grand Glaize plant, located in Valley Park, has begun pumping sewage through the system, and should be able to partially treat the water by week's end.

The outlook for MSD's Fenton plant is much worse, as there are no estimates for when the plant will become operational again.  The facility was completely submerged during the flooding, and equipment must be replaced prior to restarting the treatment process........

Wash U Geology Professor Saw This Flood Coming........

According to Washington University geology professor, Bob Criss, the statistical methods that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency use to determine flood risks are obsolete.

Criss says that discussions of 100-year or 500-year floods have no meaning, as are some of the flood plain maps.

He adds that the occurrence of major flooding events are increasing, and are for the most part caused by the improper management of the rivers........

Hi Bill,

River going down. Here's a lil fun. Dock side trash service. I had mail! Found a place to have lunch. Anchored to a Dutchman. And a boogie threw the woods.
