RiverBills Pictures of the Day .....  were taken last Sunday afternoon.

Captain Henry invited some friends out on the HMS Destiny last Sunday for a December cruise.  It was a bit overcast and the air had a bit of a chill in it, but it was a fine day for a cruise.  The weather inside the HMS Destiny ideal.

As we headed up river from Alton Marina towards Grafton and the Loading Dock we discovered that we were not the only boat out on the river.

Later on both boats ended up tied up at the Loading Dock.  As most boaters know, the Loading Dock is open through the winter.  What a great winter destination by boat or by land yacht......

Meramec River At Pacific, Missouri

Fate Of Old Bridge Incites Hopes, Fears........

Franklin County is preparing to construct a $4.5 million bridge over the Meramec River to replace the single lane Withington Ford Bridge, or Bend Bridge.

The county no longer wants the bridge, and citing problems with the nearby abandoned Bruns Bridge such as jumpers, conflicts with property owners, and an exploding meth lab, wish to get rid of it.

In lieu of demolishing the span, a proposal would have Pacific annex the bridge, providing a crossing for the Ozark trail, which currently ends in Onondaga Cave State Park........

1963 Plans For Disney's Riverfront Park Up For Auction........

Back in 1963, plans were in the works for "Walt Disney's Riverfront Square" near the St. Louis Riverfront, and next week, 13 pages of blueprints for the park that never was are hitting the auction block.

Disney wanted to construct a fully enclosed indoor theme park close to the Mississippi River, mere blocks from the Gateway Arch, which was under construction at the time.

Funding ultimately doomed the project, as Disney would cover the price of rides and attractions, but the City of St. Louis would have to pick up the tab for construction.  The city refused, and in 1965, Disney shifted their attention to Florida........

Jake was planning to depart from Portage, Wisconsin, paddle down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico, eventually returning to Portage. He had to change his plans because of the very cold weather in the northern United Sates and showed up in St. Louis a few days later to start his journey.

Missouri River At Jefferson City, Missouri

Adrian's Island Planning Proceeding........

This past summer, Jefferson City resident B.J. DeLong donated $50,000 to revive the long-discussed Adrian's Island Project.  The funding would cover the expenses for the preliminary design work for a bridge to access the property.

Adrian's Island is really a peninsula located between the Missouri River and the state Capitol building.  It developed as a result of sand and sediment settling from rock dike diversions built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1960s.

Once the bridge is constructed, the property will only be developed passively, in that the land will primarily consist of trails, with a park-like setting........

A December 2012

 Sail From Palisades to Grafton

Yesteryear's Picture of the Day in 2012..... were sent to us by Capt'n Mike Costello

Saturday we put together 9 sailboats and sailed from Palisades to Grafton. We had Lunch at the Ruebel Restaurant. They have great food and a restored bar from the 1904 World's Fair, very impressive. Grafton is always fun and all the restaurants and stores always appreciate the business. After that we strolled down and got an ice cream before we headed back to our boats. Yes, eating ice cream in December on the streets of Grafton, sweet. It was 72 degrees. The breezes picked up considerably on the way back and we all rolled into our harbors about dusk. It was a great day.

Thanks Barry for putting it together for us. Sandy Costello snapped the photos of Matt Flerlage’s boat, Tuesdays Child with the colorful genoa. Denny Swandt is crewing for him.

Illinois River History

A Look Back At The Illinois And Michigan Canal........

While many people haven't even heard of the Illinois and Michigan Canal before, it played an integral role in Chicago becoming one of the greater cities in the world.

The canal linked the Mississippi River basin and the Great Lakes, using the Chicago River.  The majority of this old route is now the Stevenson Expressway.

In 1673, Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet were paddling upstream on the Mississippi River on a effort to get to Michigan for the winter.  The Native Americans sent them up the Illinois and Des Plaines Rivers, when they came to a muddy portage, connecting to the Chicago River........

A New Wastewater Plant Means Less Impact On River........

Crews have completed the first phase of a new wastewater treatment plant at Williston, North Dakota.  The new plant will greatly reduce the impact the city has on the Missouri River.

The Williston plant is equipped with new equipment that allows the city to significantly lower the amount of wastewater that is discharged into a marshy area where several fish kills were reported this year.

The city has also implemented new technology that reduces ammonia levels in wastewater to levels much lower than the city's maxed-out lagoon system........

Caribbean Sea Near Cartagena, Columbia

A Spanish Treasure Galleon Has Been Found........

Recently, Columbia has located the wreck of a Spanish Galleon off the coast of Cartagena.  It is believed to have been carrying emeralds, as well as gold and silver coins.

Thee San Jose sank in the Caribbean Sea in 1708, near the walled port city of Cartagena.  The vessel belonged to the fleet of King Philip V as he battled the English in the War of Spanish Succession.

The Columbian government's claim didn't mention the legal battle with Sea Search Armada, which is a U.S. salvage company that is battling Bogota for the ownership of the galleon........
