River History....

November 30, 1835 in River History

Author Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born on this day in Florida, Missouri. Better known by his pen name Mark Twain.

Born .....November 30, 1835 Died.....April 21, 1910

One of Missouri's favorite native son's
The man was born in Florida, Mo and lived in Hannibal, Mo and St. Louis Mo.
He was a riverboat captain, a journalist, a lecturer (comic) and an author.
He lived most f his boyhood years on the banks of the Mississippi River in Hannibal, Mo.

The town of Hannibal and its inhabitants became the subjects of Mark Twain's later famous writings........ especially The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
At the age of seventeen Samuel Clemens he went to work on the Mississippi River, became a steamboat pilot.

His pen name ....."Mark Twain" came from his years on the river. When two fathoms or 12 feet of water were measured on the sounding line the words "Mark Twain" were called out to the riverboat captain... meaning ..."Safe Water."

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

Corps Starting Renovations at Lock and Dam No.4 and No.5........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently announced that they have awarded a $740,000 contract to Tunheim Construction for making repairs to Mississippi River Locks and Dams No.4 and No.5 this spring.

At Lock and Dam No.4 near Alma, and No.5 near Winona, the project will involve making repairs, and adding approximately 200 feet of riprap along the embankments from the storage yard and spillway.

The current rock embankment protection is well past their design lives, so the will be reinforced to protect against shoreline erosion from wave action, and overtopping by high river levels........

Boat Maintenance

How To Help Prevent Boat Fires........

Between 2008 and 2012, fire was ranked number five on the list of causes of loss for BoatUS Marine Insurance.  The vast majority of these fires begin in a few specific places aboard the boat.

Many of the fires originate in the engine room, where fuel and an ignition source have a good chance of meeting.  Proper maintenance, specifically to the electrical and fuel systems, is the first step in protecting your boat from fire.

There are several other areas that lead to boat fires, including, the storage facility/marina where the vessel is kept catching fire, engine electrical, AC/DC electrical issues, and engine overheating........

Marina Operations A Balancing Act........

Operating a marina in modern times requires a balancing act between time and money spent on infrastructure and daily maintenance, with that spent on long - term investments and capital improvements.

It also requires that managers have to recruit, train and retain high caliber staff that will provide exceptional customer service, while maintaining emergency management plans, and keeping environmental compliance up to date.

Perhaps the most critical task a marina operator faces is coming up with profitable ways to fill slips and moorings, while keeping the marina clean, safe, and attractive........

Man On A Trip Of "A Million Strokes"........

If one were to ask Matthew "Mississippi" Burdine where he is, his answer will likely be "On the river", as he is 90 days into a paddling trip down the Mississippi River.

When Burdine started his journey, he dubbed it "A Million Strokes", because he believed that was about how many times he'd have to paddle the canoe.

"Proud Mary" runs through Burdine's head, especially the line "People on the river are happy to give".  He says that he has met some wonderful people along the river........

DID YOU KNOW ?

Reprinted from National Data Buoy Center

Did You Know....  That there are Dial-A-Buoys located on the Great Lakes and in the costal waters of the United States. Sort of interesting....

What is Dial-A-Buoy?

Dial-A-Buoy gives mariners an easy way to obtain weather reports when away from a computer/the Internet. Wind and wave measurements taken within the last hour at buoy and coastal weather stations operated by NDBC.

Large numbers of boaters use the observations, in combination with forecasts, to make decisions on whether it is safe to venture out. Some even claim that the reports have saved lives. Surfers use the reports to see if wave conditions are, or will soon be, promising. Many of these boaters and surfers live well inland, and knowing the conditions has saved them many wasted trips to the coast.

Buoy reports include wind direction, speed, gust, significant wave height, swell and wind-wave heights and periods, air temperature, water temperature, and sea level pressure. Some buoys report wave directions. Coastal weather stations report the winds, air temperature, and pressure; some also report wave information, water temperature, visibility, and dew point.  Click here for more information

Collection Of Salmon Eggs Falls Short Of Goals........

Wildlife officials in North Dakota have gathered less than half of the salmon eggs than they expected from the Upper Missouri River System this year.

The reason for this is a combination of factors, including there being fewer fish, warm late fall temperatures, and safety concerns at the Garrison Dam.

While Chinook salmon aren't native to the to North Dakota, and don't reproduce naturally within the state's waters, officials with the Game and Fish Department and the Garrison Dam National Fish Hatchery gather eggs to be raised........

Kayaking A Good Stress Reliever........

Southern Illinois is a great place for boating, at it is surrounded by rivers, and spotted with several lakes.  Kayaking is typically a warm weather sport, however, it is becoming more popular in the winter months as well.

Kathy Renfro, the Carbondale Park District's Executive Director, spends her free time paddling on the lakes in the area.  She says that the quiet and ease of the kayaks has made her an avid kayaker.

Renfro adds that the boats are easy to manage, and handle by yourself, giving her the chance to go at every opportunity, including at night and in the early morning........

The Grafton Bird
A Symbol of Grafton

The Grafton Bird characterizes Grafton’s beauty, its courageous forefathers and the present community.

It took three magnificent birds to define the Grafton Bird, the cardinal, the bat and the dove.

The cardinal represents the beauty of the islands, bluffs, wildlife and rivers of our little community. The bright red crown stands high upon his head in pride. He has been well fed since God has blessed our little town with an abundance of riches.

The black bat wings represent the adventures found in the caves, rivers and hills. Within his wings there are five white strokes representing the enterprises of today and yester-years.

The white dove represents the peace and tranquility of our daily lives in our small community. There are 12 tail feathers all representing the history, stories and families, found in each of these locations or buildings: Dagget Hollow, Mason Hollow, Simm’s Hollow, Distillery Hollow, Jersey or Cork Hollow, School House Hollow, Graham Hollow, Baby Hollow, Bockholt Hollow, Babbs Hollow, Camden Hollow and the churches, the school and the paradise playground for all.

The separation between the dove’s feathers signify the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers.

The Grafton Bird will always be a symbol of Grafton’s history. From the Kickapoo Indians, to James Mason founder of Grafton, to the men, women and children of Grafton today, we will always be grateful for this resilient little river town. The Lord has blessed us and we will be forever grateful for the beautiful masterpiece that we call Grafton, Illinois.

Relish your little Grafton Bird and when you see him hanging from your Christmas Tree, remember that life is a melody of adventures just waiting for you to enjoy.

Purchase Your “Grafton Bird Christmas Tree Ornament” at Grafton Harbor for just $19.95.

Levee Reconstruction Project Nearing Completion........

On Monday, officials gathered to tour a levee construction site where the Wood River Creek joins the Mississippi River.  The construction is part of a $72 million levee reconstruction project that is nearing completion.

The original levee system was designed and constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1940s.  Over time, engineering standards have evolved, and the levees became deficient.

The nine newly refurbished levees will be able to protect against two main faults, seepage under the levees during high flood levels, and the age of some of the facilities........

Hi Bill,

With the help of my St. Louis crew we moved Mardi Gras from Tarpon Springs, Fl to Fairhope Al. This picture was taken at the Eastern Shore Marina on the bbq deck.

Also in the picture are Larry and Theresa Valentine of Lauren Grace who have been cruising for over 10 years and are now in Gulf Shores AL. My crew is Paul Rea of Reas Navy out of Grafton Harbor, Norm Jones of Island Eyes in Beaufort NC and Tom Getchman, my friend from St. Louis who has a fishing boat which remains nameless. The other folks in the pic are cruisers, Bob and Pat from Maine.

Bluff City Tackle Is Closing Up Shop........

Mark McMurray, the proprietor of Bluff City Tackle recently announced that he would be shutting his business down, citing changes in how fishing equipment is sold as the reason for closing.

McMurray says that the majority of his sales comes from three types of fishermen, bass, catfish, and pan fish (bluegill and crappie), and over the past six years, the majority of his bass fishing sales has been lost to internet dealers.

Bluff City Tackle added some merchandise, such as trapping supplies, in an effort to regain business, but they have not been able to make up for the lost sales........
