YCSL "Boat Club" get together

A few months back Andy Alexander at Yacht Club of St. Louis began emailing slipholders and having informal "Boat Club" meetings with a light lunch on the last Thursday of each month. I've been to a couple and it is mostly us old retired guys but they have been fun and interesting along with getting to meet some of our dock neighbors. This month it was the 3rd Thursday due to Thanksgiving. An added bonus was a great boat ride on Captain John Bloch Marine Service's boat "Audy B II", which some of you may recognize as the "Follow Me" boat in the Blessing of the Fleet STL for many years. If you haven't gotten an email give Andy a call at the office and have him add your email address to the list. Plans now are to continue thru the winter months, so when you want to go check your boat it would be the perfect day to do that.

The Grafton Bird
A Symbol of Grafton

The Grafton Bird characterizes Grafton’s beauty, its courageous forefathers and the present community.

It took three magnificent birds to define the Grafton Bird, the cardinal, the bat and the dove.

The cardinal represents the beauty of the islands, bluffs, wildlife and rivers of our little community. The bright red crown stands high upon his head in pride. He has been well fed since God has blessed our little town with an abundance of riches.

The black bat wings represent the adventures found in the caves, rivers and hills. Within his wings there are five white strokes representing the enterprises of today and yester-years.

The white dove represents the peace and tranquility of our daily lives in our small community. There are 12 tail feathers all representing the history, stories and families, found in each of these locations or buildings: Dagget Hollow, Mason Hollow, Simm’s Hollow, Distillery Hollow, Jersey or Cork Hollow, School House Hollow, Graham Hollow, Baby Hollow, Bockholt Hollow, Babbs Hollow, Camden Hollow and the churches, the school and the paradise playground for all.

The separation between the dove’s feathers signify the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers.

The Grafton Bird will always be a symbol of Grafton’s history. From the Kickapoo Indians, to James Mason founder of Grafton, to the men, women and children of Grafton today, we will always be grateful for this resilient little river town. The Lord has blessed us and we will be forever grateful for the beautiful masterpiece that we call Grafton, Illinois.

Relish your little Grafton Bird and when you see him hanging from your Christmas Tree, remember that life is a melody of adventures just waiting for you to enjoy.

Boat Gas News

Calls Made For Ethanol Mandate Revisions........

Last week, a bipartisan group of 184 members of the U.S. House of Representatives sent a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency calling for revisions to the nation's ethanol mandate.

The issue is that the Renewable Fuel Standard mandates that the amount of ethanol that is required to be mixed into the gasoline supply will continuously increase.

The EPA could potentially use their statutory authority to waive the ethanol volume increase.  If the EPA chooses to do this, negative economic impacts would be avoided........

High Winds Halt Barge Traffic .......

On Thursday, two barge tows spent the majority of the day tied up along the banks of the Mississippi River at Bettendorf, Iowa.  The tows were not able to clear the Crescent Bridge, which is a rail bridge below Lock and Dam No.15.

Ron Fournier, spokesman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says that the Government Bridge swing span is O.K., however, the Crescent Bridge is closed because it was too windy to open it.

The Crescent Bridge is located downstream from the Centennial Bridge in Davenport and Rick Island.  When the Crescent Bridge is closed, many tow vessels cannot clear the bridge........

For the next six months, the water levels in the Great Lakes is expected to remain above average for the most part, thanks to a powerful El Nino.

Rare Blue Crab Found In The Mississippi River........

Scientists with the Missouri Department of Conservation caught something unexpected in the Mississippi River near Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

While performing a fish sampling as part of a Missouri state paddlefish research project, researchers found a male blue crab in the net.

Adult crabs usually prefer salty to brackish water near the coast, however, they can live in fresh water.  The last time a blue crab was found this far inland was in 2004, when one was removed from a power-plant intake on the Ohio River near Metropolis, Illinois........

Quinsippi Island Bridge Plan Approved........

In late 2014, an underwater inspection revealed that the second pier of the Quinsippi Bridge, from the Quincy bank, was in poor condition, and the span could be shut down if not repaired.

Original estimates for repairing the pier came in at $695,000. Last month, the Park Board had another underwater assessment performed on the bridge.

Necessary repairs turned out to be much less involved than previously thought, meaning that the Park District could price out the repairs for considerably less........

On Tuesday, the Miami-Dade county commissioners deferred the decision on a permit for the Miami International Boat Show, which is necessary for the in-water portion of the show.  The vote has been pushed back to December 15.

The organizers of the Miami International Boat Show believe that the county will approve the permit for the show, which is scheduled for February 11 - 15 at the Miami Marine Stadium Park and Basin.

According to Ellen Hopkins, the spokeswoman for the National Marine Manufacturers Association, now being awarded the permit would be a worst-case scenario, affecting only the in-water portion of the show........

The City Of Cleveland Is Against Dumping In Lake Erie........

In order for large commercial ships to be able to transit the Cuyahoga River near Cleveland, Ohio, some 250,000 cubic yards of sediment has to be dredged each year from the harbor and riverbed.

Recently, the Port of Cleveland petitioned the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works to change the description of the Cleveland Harbor navigation project to prevent the Cuyahoga River sediment from being dumped in Lake Erie.

A bi-partisan group of six U.S. Representatives from Ohio is supporting the request.  This effort follows that U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans for dumping the potentially contaminated dredge spoils into Lake Erie........

The wind was so strong yesterday there were white caps in the Mississippi. Seth had to get the kayak out of the water, yet Chris pushed on! As the waves continued to grow we eventually had to stop for the day due to safety concerns. But it's safe to say Chris & team survived the storm. We will post a video soon! We also want to thanks the East Baton Rouge Sheriffs Department for their help on the river!
Today is a new day and we are excited for the event this evening at the USS KIDD Veterans Memorial & Museum in Baton Rouge tonight at 5:30pm CST! Check out our events page for details!
Start: Mile Marker 228
Finish: Mile Marker 211

Mississippi County:  Feds Liable For Flood Damaged Roads........

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers activated the Birds Point New Madrid Floodway by blowing the levee in May of 2011.  The move was made to alleviate heavy flooding along the Mississippi River.

After the floodwaters receded, residents rebuilt, resumed farming the land, and the main focus was on reconstructing the levee.  The Corps had promised to restore the levee, and they did just that.

During the levee reconstruction, heavy trucks were required to haul sand used in rebuilding the levees.  The heavy truck traffic caused significant damage to the roadways, and Mississippi County is expecting the Corps to restore the damaged roadways........

Dream Yacht A Disaster For St. Charles Couple........

Maureen Amen-Gay, and her husband Andy are stuck with a bit of a shipwreck at the dock behind their home along the Mississippi River in St. Charles County.

Andy purchased a 50 foot 1968 Hatteras motor yacht in 2000, and was burning through their savings making the payments.  His lawyer advised filing for bankruptcy, and he prepared to return the vessel to the bank.

In September 2014, he received a letter from the lien holder, stating that they have taken possession of the vessel, and intend to sell it.  Time passed, and the lien holder never picked up the vessel.  The Hatteras fell into disrepair and sank.

The lien holder sent a letter this past August saying that the company no longer has security interest in the vessel.  Now the couple is stuck with a sunken vessel in their backyard........

Lake Of The Ozarks

Lake Expected To Rise Six Inches........

As the rainfall tapered off Tuesday evening, the Bagnell Dam operators are forecasting that the level of the Lake of the Ozarks will rise a total of six inches.

Amren Engineer Alan Sullivan reports that the Bagnell Dam is operating at minimum generation in preparation for an expected lake elevation of 659.3 feet.  Full pool is 660 feet.

Amren is currently storing water in the Lake because of low electrical demand brought about by the unseasonably warm weather.  Bagnell Dam operators are responsible for maintaining the lake level between 652 and 660 feet........

Boat Fire at Duck Club Yacht Club

Alan Deutschmann's boat

Repost from Julie Spradling on facebook about the fire onboard Alan Deutschmann's boat at Duck Club Yacht Club.

"Sad news, Alan Deutschmann's yacht had an electrical fire early Saturday morning. Thank GOD his smoke detector worked and woke him. After going through all 6 fire extinguishers he managed to get the boat out of his slip, saving the surrounding boats from damage. After joining 6 hoses from the parking lot to the courtesy dock he managed to put out the fire. The inside of the boat is a complete loss with everything melted and smoke damaged.

Please say a prayer for Alan. This is not only his boat but his home. We will start the clean up process today.

Any help available is appreciated."

Mississippi River At Davenport, Iowa

Mayor Vows To Fight For Greenspace Along The Riverfront........

Bill Gluba, Davenport's outgoing Mayor, spoke on the recently cleared and seeded former Dock site overlooking Lock and Dam No.15, vowing to preserve the riverfront for public use.

There were no members of the Davenport City Council present at the press conference, even though Gluba invited them.  He said that he had been proven correct in a disagreement with the Council over a developer's failed plans for The Dock site.

Standing with Gluba were members of the Davenport Levee Improvement Commission and River Action's director Kathy Wine.  Gluba says that serious battles are coming if the City Council screws up the riverfront........

BoatU.S. Foundation

Giving Tuesday Coming Up........

December 1, 2015 is Giving Tuesday, a day when people celebrate their generosity.  When anglers, boaters and sailors want to give, they head to boatus.org, the website for the BoatU.s. Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water.

The boating not-for-profit's goal since 1981 has been to reduce boating accidents, fatalities, and increase stewardship of the nation's waterways.

The majority of the BoatU.S. Foundation's funding comes from boaters and waterways users, so when one gives to the Foundation, they are giving back to boating........

Purchase Your “Grafton Bird Christmas Tree Ornament” at Grafton Harbor for just $19.95.

Where the Rivers Run

Channel 9 Tonight !

Hey Bill,
I was up early this morning watching my Sunday morning travel shows on Ch.9. They had an ad for a documentary called Where the Rivers Run. It is on Monday night at 7:00 P.M.

From what I saw it looked liked it is about Missouri rivers and streams.

WHERE THE RIVERS RUN

From NineNet.Org

"Using many aerial views shot in high definition from a drone by independent videographer Tony Carosella, Where the Rivers Run presents beautifully compelling images of Missouri’s forests, bluffs, prairies and rivers that make evident how the landscape serves as an inspiration to artists, chefs, farmers, vintners, scientists, environmentalists and naturalists. It shows a land shaped by rivers and the people who depend on both."

Precautions Necessary To Avoid Carbon Monoxide Poisoning........

The Illinois Conservation Police are reminding the public to be aware of the dangers carbon monoxide, which is a colorless, odorless gas produced by portable heaters and generators.

As the temperatures fall, people typically rely on portable heating devices to stay warm when hunting or fishing.  The Illinois Department of Natural Resources recommends the installation of carbon monoxide detectors, and inspecting equipment prior to it's use.

Illinois Conservation Police Chief Rafael Gutierrez says that carbon monoxide detectors should be used aboard your boat, cabin, or in your camper, as carbon monoxide often isn't detected until it is too late........
