The Grafton Bird
A Symbol of Grafton

The Grafton Bird characterizes Grafton’s beauty, its courageous forefathers and the present community.

It took three magnificent birds to define the Grafton Bird, the cardinal, the bat and the dove.

The cardinal represents the beauty of the islands, bluffs, wildlife and rivers of our little community. The bright red crown stands high upon his head in pride. He has been well fed since God has blessed our little town with an abundance of riches.

The black bat wings represent the adventures found in the caves, rivers and hills. Within his wings there are five white strokes representing the enterprises of today and yester-years.

The white dove represents the peace and tranquility of our daily lives in our small community. There are 12 tail feathers all representing the history, stories and families, found in each of these locations or buildings: Dagget Hollow, Mason Hollow, Simm’s Hollow, Distillery Hollow, Jersey or Cork Hollow, School House Hollow, Graham Hollow, Baby Hollow, Bockholt Hollow, Babbs Hollow, Camden Hollow and the churches, the school and the paradise playground for all.

The separation between the dove’s feathers signify the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers.

The Grafton Bird will always be a symbol of Grafton’s history. From the Kickapoo Indians, to James Mason founder of Grafton, to the men, women and children of Grafton today, we will always be grateful for this resilient little river town. The Lord has blessed us and we will be forever grateful for the beautiful masterpiece that we call Grafton, Illinois.

Relish your little Grafton Bird and when you see him hanging from your Christmas Tree, remember that life is a melody of adventures just waiting for you to enjoy.

Purchase Your “Grafton Bird Christmas Tree Ornament” at Grafton Harbor for just $19.95.

Mississippi River Valley

USDA Announces Investment In The Mississippi River Valley........

National Geographic recently penned a piece on the poor condition of the Mississippi River Valley, citing fertilizer runoffs causing algae blooms in the waterways, and a dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico.

Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that they were investing $30 million in the Mississippi River Basin Healthy Watersheds Initiative, which will fund dozens of projects within the basin.

Given the value of the Mississippi River, $30 million seems a bit low, especially after America's Watershed Initiative gave the river a grade of D+.  That report found that dams and bridges are in poor condition........

The village of Eminence, IL was one of the first settlements in the area.  The village was founded in 1828 on the bluffs along the Mississippi River and rose to importance rapidly when the 1831 Congress debated whether to direct a road through it that it wished to build across the United States.

“Exactly where was Eminence, who lived there and why did they live there, and what happened to Eminence,” asks Tim Tomlinson, President of Historic Elsah Foundation and host for the Series. “How and why do such places disappear?”

Lake Superior

Forty Years Ago, Lake Superior Claimed The Edmund Fitzgerald........

On November 10, 1975, a violent storm on Lake Superior sank the freighter, Edmund Fitzgerald, killing all 29 souls aboard.  The next year, the wreck was made famous by a song by Gordon Lightfoot, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

The song places the blame for the sinking in part on the "Witch of November", which is the cause of memorable and fierce storms on the Great Lakes.

According to the Reverend William Fleming, the pastor of the Mariners' Church of Detroit, about 30,000 people have died in 10,000 shipwrecks over the past 300 years.  A memorial service was held there on Sunday to remember the victims of tragedies on the Great Lakes, including the loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald........

Boat Catches Fire on River, City Has No Fireboat........

On Saturday afternoon, a boat caught fire on the Ohio River near Pittsburgh, however, there wasn't much firefighters were able to do about it, as they no longer have a fire boat.

Reportedly, the owner of the vessel was taking the boat in for fuel line repairs, when it stalled, and the engine caught fire.  The owner was not able to extinguish the fire, so he donned a life jacket, and jumped off just before it exploded.

The owner of the vessel was treated for inhalation as well as exposure to toxic fumes from the burning boat.  Eventually, he was taken to the hospital........

Over 18,000 Gallons Of Ethanol Made It Into The River........

Saturday morning, a train derailed near Alma, Wisconsin, dumping approximately 18,500 gallons of ethanol into the Mississippi River.  Crews have placed containment booms on the river to curtail the spread of the alcohol.

This method of containment may not have done much to stop the spread of the ethanol, because unlike oil, ethanol is water soluble, and floats only briefly prior to dissolving.

It is not certain how much the spill will affect the environment, however, the biggest threat of an ethanol spill is fire, which luckily did not occur in this case........

Trooper Alleges Cover-Up In Ellingson Drowning........

Retired Missouri State Highway Patrol Sergeant Randy Henry says that believes that they killed Brandon Ellingson when discussing the handcuffed drowning of the 20 year old.

Henry is considered to be a whistleblower, citing instances when during the investigation, he said that the Highway Patrol withheld evidence, pressured him to lie, and tried to save themselves at the expense of the Ellingson family.

Henry believes that he is complicit in Ellingson's drowning death.  Henry signed off on Trooper Anthony Piercy's fitness for being on the water.  He adds that saying he didn't would be hypocritical........

Divers To Collect Sample From Sunken Barge........

On Monday, divers will be temporarily removing a plug they previously installed on a sunken barge near Kelley's Island in Lake Erie, so that a sample can be collected.

While the plug is removed for sampling, a small amount of the barge's contents will leak out, and rise to the surface.  This may cause an odor that could be smelled in areas several miles away, dependant upon wind conditions.

The Coast Guard is extending a safety zone around the sunken barge one nautical mile in all directions directly above the barge's location........

Corps Presents 2016 Missouri River Plan....  Fort Pierre Residents Remember 2011....

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently advised residents of Fort Pierre, South Dakota that it appears that it will be a typical year along the Missouri River in 2016.

The Corps says that it is more likely that there will be a drought in 2016 than flooding.  Some Fort Pierre residents are concerned however.

At this time, Fort Pierre is still struggling to recover from the 2011 flooding, and the residents are not certain another flood can be avoided as the Corps has not upgraded their monitoring equipment for runoff potential........

To repair the pier, the Park District will need to surround the pier with bags, and then pump concrete into the structure, filling the voids created by erosion........
