Ahoy Cap'n Bill,

Went to the riverside at Harbor Point last night for sunset and discovered a guy, a girl, a dog and a canoe by their tent on the beach!

They are paddling the length of the river to obtain donations that will support their organization which helps homeless youth.

Attach is a pic and a scan of their card. Perhaps you could post them on your pic of the day and add them to your blog column.??? Their work is a great cause to support.

Thanks Pal!!!
Keith Wagner

Take A Peek Inside The National Great Rivers Research & Education Center........

The Jerry F. Costello Confluence Field Station is a certified sustainable building in which researchers work to protect and sustain the threatened river system.

The station's roof consists of native plants in about a foot of soil, topping a strata of water collecting material that gathers rainwater for later use, as well as eliminating runoff.

The lights are high efficiency, and some are tube lights that reflect sunlight from the roof into the rooms.  The walls, floor, and insulation are made of recycled materials, such as fly ash and newspapers........

Photographer Shoots Deer Swimming Across The River........

Early Saturday morning, Cape Girardeau nature photographer Jennifer Davis had an opportunity to film a rarely seen event, approximately 12 deer swimming across the Mississippi River to Illinois.

Davis said that she had headed down to the river as she normally does, hoping for some landscape shots, with the thought that there would be some smoke on the water.

Instead, she stumbled across the deer heading into the river.  Davis says that it appears that the deer knew what they were doing, as they swam upstream a bit, and then let the river current take them to the Illinois shore, directly across from where they were........

Henry had criticized the patrol's investigation into the drowning death of 20 year old Brandon Ellingson, who had drowned at the Lake of the Ozarks in May of 2014, while in the custody of a State Trooper........

He chose to name the game Poker after he realized it was the first such reference to the game and it was not mentioned in the current American Hoyle

How To Deal With A Multiple Engine Boat Losing An Engine........

Engine failures can happen to even the most experienced boater, but if the boat is equipped with multiple engines, all is not lost.  Strike a submerged object, overheat, or throw a rod, and you can make it back to shore on the good engine.

This may sound simple enough, but there are several considerations that need to be taken into account, depending on if the vessel is equipped with inboards, outboards, or sterndrives........

Hi Bill

I took this picture this morning, Monday after deciding last night to spend the night on our boat. We are out of Yacht Club St. Louis, took this from our Mariah Z302. Nothing better than waking up, and going for a cruise. Especially when you have the whole Dardenne slough to yourself!

As I sit at my desk now working I have this picture to remind me of the beauty that is our river and only 20 min from my house!

Happy Monday!

Grafton Residents Voting On Port District........

A few months ago, the Quarry Township left America's Central Port District, and the city of Grafton could be next.  Grafton's City Council has approved a resolution to allow voters to decide if they want to remain in the port district during the March election.

The request will have to be approved by the Illinois General Assembly.  Grafton's Mayor, Tom Thompson says that he believes that the opponents of the district are spreading misinformation.

The executive director of the port district has stated that they have never levied taxes, nor do they expect that to change.  Thompson points out that that the March ballot question will not be binding........

The Gateway Arch Celebrated It's Birthday Wednesday........

The fans of the Gateway Arch were on hand to celebrate the monument's golden anniversary with $1 rides to the top, speeches, and an autograph session with some of the men that built it.

Wednesday marked the 50th anniversary of the final piece being installed on the Arch, and a few lucky fans got an opportunity to take a look out of the Arch's top hatch, some 630 feet above the riverfront.

St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay said that the Gateway Arch was finished on a day that those who were old enough won't ever forget.  Slay was 10 years old on that day, and said that everyone was focused on the Arch, wondering if the last piece would fit........

Arch Portal Opened Briefly....  Offered Top Of The City View....

Wednesday morning, a rare event occurred atop the Gateway Arch, the 18 inch wide hatch was opened, and a few members of the media, and some Arch staffers were allowed a peek out of the hole.

The hatch allows maintenance workers access to the top of the monument.  The lucky few that were granted the privilege of poking their heads out of the hole were blown away by the view.

Rhonda Schier, the new chief of museum services at the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial said that this was a heart pounding experience for new-on-the-job........

The Arch Grew Out Of St. Louis' Original Settlement........

The Gateway Arch is standing on the location of the original St. Louis colonial village, which was founded by French speaking settlers in 1764.

St. Louis prospered and grew during the golden age of the steamboats.  Railroads eventually shouldered out the steamboats, and commerce started spreading westward.  Around the turn of the century, the riverfront was  slipping into a slow decay.

As World War I was ramping up, the City of St. Louis developed the Plan Commission, whose tasks included dealing with the dilapidated riverfront........

Officials Working To Replace The "Other" Clark Bridge........

Missouri and Illinois transportation officials are considering a plan for replacing the Champ Clark Bridge over the Mississippi River.  The current 87 year old span carries Highway 54 over the river between Missouri and Illinois.

The project is expected to cost $60 million.  Illinois has already promised it's portion of the cost, $30 million.  The federal government has also allotted $10 million for the project.

During the last week, the span had been closed to allow for the replacement of some degraded rivets.  Detours around the bridge can take motorists 77 and 183 miles out of the way........

From Wikipedia Encyclopedia
The bridge is named after James Beauchamp Clark, a former Speaker of the House from Bowling Green, Missouri. Clark served as Speaker from 1911 to 1919.
